Mr. Lodge is about to destroy Sweetwater Swamp, a wetlands reserve between Gotham and Riverdale that is the home of dozens of rare plants that can't be found anywhere else in the world for development. This doesn't sit well with environmentalists. Two of them, Harley & Ivy, attempt to use reason to convince Lodge not to do it, but when that fails, they decide to kidnap his daughter to persuade him. They arrive at the heroes and villains themed costume gala Lodge is throwing to celebrate the groundbreaking, dressed as themselves. Unfortunately, Betty & Veronica are also dressed as them, and Veronica is not happy about two people showing up in the same costumes.
Meanwhile, a group of Gotham criminals are seeking revenge on Harley and Ivy. They are Lenny the Lamprey, Peach-Head Henry (Ivy turned his head into a peach), and Giggles Magee (He's sad all the time, but can't stop laughing because of what Harley did to him).
To add to the drama, the Blossom twins have been kept out of the gala by Veronica.
Oh, some trivia... The earliest Batman stories were set in New York City, but the location was changed to the fictional Gotham City, Gotham being a nickname for New York. The earliest Archie stories were set in the real life Riverdale neighborhood in New York City before Riverdale was made it's own fictional town, a suburb of the Big Apple, while Gotham is now a sister city of New York. Yeah, Gotham and Riverdale are representations of the same place.
But first, some music...
We'll make the winter springtime
And Jingle Jangle singtime
Right on through the summer and the fall
So darlin', don't be weepin'
And please don't you be sleepin'
When I come a-creepin' down the hall
A number 1 hit single in the US & UK in 1969...
And another Top 10 hit from that year that supplied a major storyline for Riverdale...
Sabrina is dressed as Marilyn Monroe.

Reggie is dressed as the Joker, hits on Harley, and gets hit with a mallet for his efforts. When he wakes up, he thinks he's the real Joker, complete with the speech balloons.

Zatanna let's Sabrina assist her during her act. What could possibly go wrong?
Veronica decides to kick out the party crashers that have the nerve to wear the same costumes as her and Betty, while Betty tries to warn her. Ivy says this will make what she's there to do easier than she thought.

They figure Zatanna got them into this mess, so they'll find her. But first, they have to get through a day of high school without arousing suspicion, and stop the destruction of the swamp. They think they can remember the names of everyone they met at the gala...
Betty & Veronica wake up at Selina's place in similar shock. Ronnie decides Sabrina is to blame, since every time something really weird happens, she's there. They need to get back to Riverdale. Then, Selina's plants act weird when Ronnie approaches.

Trying to fit in, of course. They had some trouble remembering Archie's name, but he figured they're just having some after effects from what happened the previous night.

The answer to Moose's question is Reggie Joker has arrived in Gotham. He took the train. Everyone on the train was too focused on their phones to notice.
So, how well are Betty & Veronica blending in in Gotham?

Betty doesn't know about the enhanced strength, and how heavy that hammer actually is. Yet. Some cops arrive. "We know what this looks like, but if you'll just let us explain..."

After escaping to a rooftop...

They buy the car, but the dealer calls Lenny the Lamprey and tells them who is in town. He sends his forces to seek... REVENGE!
The bad guys crash into Betty's and Veronica's car, and they don't have a handle on their powers yet. Reggie Joker arrives, though, and actually does some damage to the gangsters, who then decide they don't want to take on three of Gotham's most dangerous rogues at once.
More police arrive, and Ronnie overdoes it, but they escape. Now to try to restore Reggie's memory. Betty reasons that since Ivy can control men with a kiss, then kissing Reggie might bring him back to normal. Ronnie tries it, but it just knocks him out. Betty then learns that Harley has enhanced strength since she is now having to carry both the big hammer and Reggie around.
Back in Riverdale, Jughead tells Archie that Betty & Veronica have gone crazy. Archie acknowledges that they are acting strange, and seem unusually physically affectionate with each other. Cheryl Blossom throws a drink at "Veronica" as payback for not allowing them to attend the gala, but it hits her brother Jason.

Jason tries to make peace by inviting our heroines and Archie to a night at the drive in. To Harley's surprise, Ivy accepts. The drive in happens to be next to the construction site, so the plan is to slip off during the movie and wreck Mr. Lodge's project.
But, the invitation is a set-up, for the Blossom twins are plotting... REVENGE. The movie they're going to see features evil trees attacking teenagers with sap.

Cheryl is confused when her prey leaves the theater. They reach the site, and Harley begins her work, when...

Meanwhile, in Gotham, Veronica decides that, since they are being hunted by cops, gangsters, and Bats, they need disguises. She remembers all her credit card numbers, so they visit her favorite Gotham boutique.
It doesn't go well.

Better not let Batman find out about that.
Ronnie is wondering why she's so itchy, but Ivy removes the poison, and tells her about their confrontation with the Blossoms and that Cheryl got a double dose. That pleases Ronnie. Harley and Ivy also need to tell her about what they learned about Mr. Lodge's business partner.

They go to talk to Mr. Lodge, but he immediately decides to call the police. Ivy does her mojo to get him to turn the deed of the swamp over to her. Betty & Veronica attack, and while Harley & Ivy are busy subduing them, the gangsters arrive and capture everyone. They take them to the swamp, but instead of just shooting them, they place them in a death trap that will also kill many citizens who will be at the groundbreaking, which Archie, Jughead, and others have arrived for.

They are Gotham criminals, after all.

Reggie arrives for the rescue! Unfortunately, he's still a bit out of it, trips over a vine, and knocks himself out.
Fortunately, Harley and Ivy have plenty of experience in escaping death traps.

And now it's time to save the day.

Ivy captures Lenny, while Jughead has the perfect weapon to deal with Giggles.

Mr. Lodge agrees to turn Sweetwater Swamp into a nonprofit nature reserve. But, Harley has one last challenge...

Date: 2019-06-22 05:23 am (UTC)But about Riverdale: I thought it was originally some country town or something; I recall one of the earliest Archie stories involving him riding a train and bringing along his pet chicken. Seemed like a real Smallville kind of place in that regard.

Date: 2019-06-22 06:20 am (UTC)I think of Riverdale in a similar way that I do Springfield from the Simpsons; it's a stand-in for "Anytown, USA". The location, geography, climate, local businesses, ect are determined by the current story and are subject to change.

"Riverdale is the setting of the stories in the Archie Comics universe. It is usually depicted as a medium-sized town (possibly a suburb of a bigger city), with all the usual amenities of shopping malls, restaurants, and parks. In the first Archie stories in the 1940s, it was identified as Riverdale, New York, a real neighborhood in The Bronx. In Jackpot Comics #5 (Spring 1942), a story written by Bob Montana has the gang going on a river trip. One panel says "...the good ship 'Peter Stuyvesant' settles into the Hudson, as Riverdale High clambers aboard for a happy trip to Bear Mountain." Riverdale has been shown to have beaches, lakes, rivers, deserts, farmland, woodland, mountains, plains, a transit system, and four distinct seasons with changes in climate."
Bear Mountain...

Later stories gave it the zip code 10543, which is in Westchester County, which is a suburban area for New York City. Westchester County also happens to be where Professor Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters was. Loudon Wainwright III's song about where he grew up...

Speaking of Smallville, after Crisis of Infinite Earths it was moved to Kansas, but it was originally a short drive from Metropolis. During the Bronze Age, it was described as "a quiet town, nestled in the hills just inland from the eastern seaboard."
Of course, the real reason comics used to be either set in or around New York City, or in fictional cities based on the area like Metropolis, Gotham, and Riverdale, is that was where the comics industry was based, so everyone was writing and drawing where they lived.

Date: 2019-06-23 02:47 am (UTC)Still, Riverdale's whole " trapped in time" thing means that any resemblance to a real city is likely long gone. Plus I don't think many suburbs anywhere could support a water park and a museum and wherever else Archie and the gang are going this month.
Edit: I just found this...
https://www.wbur.org/artery/2015/05/30/archie-betty-haverhill-geary
...which also puts Riverdale on the East Coast. Granted the logic there seems to be "Archie is from Haverhill, Massachusetts because Bob Montana went to High School there" so it isn't exactly airtight.
Still, we know Sabrina's Greendale is fairly close to Riverdale and it seems weirdly appropriate for a family of witches to be living within spitting distance of Salem (the City, not the kitty).

Date: 2019-06-23 03:17 am (UTC)Westchester County has museums. Plus, Six Flags Over Texas is in a Dallas suburb, and Disneyland is in a Los Angeles suburb.
What throws me is, through the Bronze Age, SMALLVILLE was in that part of the country. I always pictured it in the Midwest.

Date: 2019-06-23 09:20 pm (UTC)Not really. The series seemed pretty trapped in the 50s until 2007 gave us the "New Look" and all the things that followed*. I mean, if Chuck and Nancy are any indication, the school desegregated in the 70s so I guess that was keeping up with modern times.
*It's amazing how much they've packed into the last dozen years. Kevin Keller. Life with Archie. Sabrina "manga". Two Reboots. Zombies, Werewolves, Vampires, and demons. The Riverdale show. So many crossovers with real and fictional people.
I see your point about Westchester County ect. Maybe Riverdale is some kind of Americana-themed tourist town and somehow it just never comes up.
I know there ARE farms in upstate NY but Smallville being anywhere but the midwest just seems wrong.

Granted, the content was kept to whatever was considered appropriate for young children at the time, but it was always contemporary.
As for Smallville, it seems wrong to us for it to be anywhere but the Midwest, but I suppose it was different for readers from the 50s through the 70s.
