In the latest episode of the world's least amusing sitcom, the US Attorney for Washington, Jeanine Pirro withdrew criminal charges relating to the "Vandalism" of the Reflecting Pool, admitting it was down to a crap repair job. POTUS 47 however, continued to claim that it WAS vandalism because you know how much he dislikes it when little things like "facts" disagree with his worldview.
I finally caught "Masters of the Universe", and I wanted to like it so much more than I did, because they seem to want to undercut the drama at every moment and they undercut it with some winceworthy comedy (The "Taika Waititi Effect" as I like to call it). That and the fact that Eternians seem so keen to be a bunch of dicks to Adam (who doesn't do much to help himself at times, but who is basically someone cast out into a dimensional vortex all by himself when he was ten and had to exist in a world that's completely unlike his won, and being glared at a lot for having accidentally lost the thing everyone was obsessed with BECAUSE HE WAS TEN YEARS OLD and in a damned DIMENSIONAL VORTEX). Most of the cast do their best, but it's so frustrating because there's a much more interesting movie just under the surface of the one we got.
Batman Caped Crusader season 2 dropped, but I'll make a separate discussion thread for that.

Date: 2026-08-04 10:43 am (UTC)• The witch side of nomiverse is centered on Syrup and the Ultimate Sweet, a story about an antisocial human who uses alchemy to create magical candies, her secretly witch coworker who created a candy golem to be her friend, and her tsundere witch rival who has a crush on her (and her cat familiar). It’s a cute story that has lovable characters and is great for introducing the setting. The storyline is continued with Syrup 2: Candy Alchemy, which has more RPG elements to the gameplay (unless stated otherwse, all of NomNomNami’s games are visual novels), which in turn spins off into Starry Flowers, a BL kinetic novel telling the story of romance between the candy witch and the memorable fashionista witch who has already appeared as a side character in a few earlier games: First Kiss at a Spooky Soiree, a short otome game where the witch protagonist can have her first kiss with one of several characters of various genders and Astra’s Garden, a peaceful game starring a witch apothecary with the theme of grief and dealing with the passing of oneself and one’s loved ones. In turn, characters who appear in those games are further developed in games of their own: the succubus girl from the party is the protagonist of Contract Demon where she is summoned by a girl claiming to be an angel who clearly has a demon fetish, the fashionsta witch’s airhead friend is main character in Charm Studies, a picross game with a plot, while characters from the games are further developed in Sex Advice Succubus. Finally, Poffin the moth demon from the soiree has her own comedic short rpg in Princess Poffin and the Spider Invasion. I have not played Syrup 2 yet, but in general this side of the games is cuter and more peaceful, with only Astra’s Garden having a more somber tone.
• The furry side of nomiverse is centered on Lonely Wolf Treat, a retro rpg still in development starring a runaway wolf who befriends and later romances a friendly bunny from a settlement of bunnies terrified of predators, and in later chapter also the fox who attempted to kill said bunny, forming an unusual lesbian animal threesome. Treat’s story is complete in seven chapters and focuses mostly on characters and romance and discusses predator/prey dynamics of the settings, while the eighth chapter focuses on wandering wolf Trick who is travelling the world in search of her human adoptive father. This chapter focuses more on wordbuilding, discussing the dynamics between furries and witches and providing a very major plot twist that sheds a completely different light on the whole setting. The series has its own spin-offs: comedic romance simulator Date Treat, earlier mentioned Escape from Wormwood, expanding on a minor episode where Trick is kidnapped by a mice cult, and most importantly Night with Timber, a very dark game about an extremely likable cannibalistic serial killer that I discussed before, which has its own comedic spin-off Date Senbei. These games tend to have much more serious tone (which does mean they don’t feature lighter moments!) and deal heavily with the themes of social injustice. Furthermore, Treat and Mochi appear as major charatcers in Syrup 2 while the wolf village from Night with Timber is one of the settings the characters need to visit to progress the story. I *GREATLY* recommend all games from this side to every reader, as they are really philosophically and psychologically deep pieces of fantasy storytelling (and the characters are super cute!).
• The two sides converge in Another Piece of Candy, and ongoing webcomic where characters from various games interact for mostly comedic purposes – nonetheless, it also provides some further plot development for Syrup characters. The main cast includes Thyme and Spice, witch incarnations of the leads of Her Tears Were My Light, a somewhat abstract yuri novel following antropomorphised Time and Space from the birth of Time until the heat death of the universe and back in an extremely original game reminding me somewhat of the themes of Madoka Magica, my all-time favourite. The protagonists even look kinda like MadoHomu! The websomic is fun and after introduction of Timber spins-off into yet another spin-off webcomic Timber’s Community Service, which is more serious in tone. You can also purchase some doujinshi made by the author, portraying intimate moments of our favourite couples.
• Nami’s games were not the only ones I’ve covered over the weekend. I have finally played Saihate Station: Twilight Railway, a sequel to the original game which I have somewhat mixed feelings about. One one hand, it is a genuinely very good story expanding on Shion’s characterisation and motifs. On the other, the game overrides the true ending of the original game and retcons they way we interpret the situation the characters found themselves into, making me question how exactly the normal ending of Haru escaping alone could be possible. I admit my interpretation may be due to me being unable to obtain one of the two true endings from the game for some reason (I do suck at skill games).
• I have also once again played Slay the Princess, making choices that to me would present the full narrative in a manners that makes up logical character development for the player character in his various interactions with the Princess… with the twist of the character being slightly dumb. I went with Prisoner/Cage→Damsel/Happily Ever After→ Witch/Thorn→ Stranger→ Spectre→ And what happens next?/Strange Beginnings, which in my opinion is the path that would make the best adaptation if the game is ever adapted into a linear media. I love our eldrich Princess and hated having to hurt her, which means I will most likely never play the majority of possible routes in the game, but I am happy with where I left the characters at. Finally,
• I unlocked some more scenes from Naked Butlers, namely Komine and Toudou’s worst endings (the ones that have main character die) as well as Ichinose/Sayaka, Arisato/Sayaka, and Arisato/Aoki scenes. What strikes me the most is while all the butlers are prone to following the master’s orders without a word, Arisato is the only one who actually takes into account ethical side of his orders, protesting mistreatment of his coworkers and secretly helping them when the punishment is too rough, coming up with least hurtful scenarios when he is ordered to be a service topdom to his friends, and outright refusing to sexually assault Sayaka, turning the scene a mutual dubcon scenario rather than straight up noncon as with Ichinose. At the same time, while the punishments other characters get have mostly to do with degradation kink, Arisato’s sex scenes are outright dangerous and potentially fatal – in fact, the last scene in his true route was *intended* to be fatal. This realisation is disturbing to me. Nonetheless, now I want to read the sequel even more.
• Traditionally, while I was reading my novels I binged the current season of My Adventures with Superman in the background, and for the most of the episodes I found it to be a let down compared to earlier episodes focusing more on romantic comedy rather than high stakes drama and action. However, the most recent episode changed everything I want to discuss the series again after the season finishes. I am actually excited for once! Maybe I’ll even read some comics again! I intend to binge the new episodes of Batman the Caped Crusader over the weekend, I think it would be fun to compare the two cartoons.
• Finally, I have read the short story collection for Captive Prince, which I kinda have no opinion on, as there’s not much happening there to be honest and I was not a fan of most of the featured characters to begin with. I wish we at least got a Nicaise story there, he was the only character other than the leads that I was actually interested in during the lecture. Looking at all the games I’ve described today, I think I clearly have a type with my favourites…
• I'm proud to announce that my 'diversify your romance reading habits' project worked and since April I've read about equal amounts of f/f, f/m and m/m romance. 😊👍🏿✌🏿Still, most of my unread novels are BL, so I think the numbers will end up heavily skewed by the end of the year but nonetheless an attempt was made. I realized that I enjoy themes and tropes more than specific gender configuration, but in general I still have a preference towards BL. I consider Lonely Wolf Treat to be amongst the best yuri games period, but still my favourite games in the setting are the two BL ones, Night with Timber and Starry Flowers.It seems that my yaoi brainrot left an incurable influence. All in all the project was surprisingly barely stopping out of my comfort zone and actually was fun AND helped me grow as a person. I now decided to stop actively looking for new things to read and focus on my existing library, going as far as to ignore every manga release until I'm done – I say as I purchase Return to Ash, Once Upon a Throne of Roses, and fifth chapter of Unluckily in Love: Fragments of Love (I am a fan of YuelTavi second only to their creator).. I'm sure it will take a long time to go through it!
• Comicon has ended a week ago, but only now do I have time to talk about interesting reveals made during the festival, to most of which I am massively sceptical. New My Little Pony generation is announced and it’s a… reboot of Friendship is Magic. By the time it debuts the series would have been offline for barely a decade, it’s high time the brand stops relying on it so much, the previous sequel was the second least grossing generation at all, beaten even by the awful third generation, please just stop.
• The new Avatar projects look really interesting on the other hand: a postapocalyptic setting is very fitting given current cultural and political climate, and what I’ve seen of the Aaang movie looks extremely impressive, plus I’m glad that Katara wasn’t sidelined by the story (I have yet to watch the film but I feel cautiously optimistic).
• The tenth season of RWBY was finally greenlit and the show is officially in production – by a completely different set of animators, so I expect to see yet another quality drop, as only Chinese companies use the same software for animation Rooster Teeth did and it’s unlikely that Warner Bros would hire animators from China.
• The Interview with the Vampire was greenlit for its fourth season, explicitly adapting the Queen of the Damned storyline, which likely means that the episodes missing from its adaptation of Vampire Lestat (most notably everything related to Marius due to how controversial portraying a bisexual pedophile in a positive light would be in current climate) will be omitted. It’s possibly a good thing that I gave up on the series.
• It’s less than a month until Walpurgisnacht Rising premieres, I am so excited! If you are unfamiliar with Madoka, please install Magia Exedra, the game tells you everything you need to know before the movie, is free, and story progression is easy – and you can collect cute magical girls, with a few fan favourite minor character from the previous smartphone game Magia Record having received their five star units recently. Come play, the international server only has a few thousand players, you can even easily make your way to top 50 in tournament section! After a little over a year of playing, I own almost all unlimited characters and majority of unlimited units despite not having spent a yen and taking frequent breaks due to lack of time. It’s one of the few gachas I fully recommend to everybody!
• Most important (to me) news have to do with my favourite franchise Gundam. We have a confirmation that after three redhead heroines in a row the next main character will be a boy on the older side of teen spectrum, and his design is bland as hell. I know nothing else about the upcoming anime, but I already dislike the main character, he looks like an isekai protagonist before meeting Truck-kun. Much worse news is that Netflix is producing a life action story set in the Univeral Century timeline. On one hand, the did the minimal homework in realising that every Gundam is a love story and star crossed lovers carry every show. Good job on that! On the other, they whitewashed the hell out of he cast, which I find really offensive – while the series relies on mukokuseki to a large extend, some of its most iconic characters are people of colour and there should be East Asian actors in main roles if only for the sake of paying homage to the original creators!! An all-white Gundam is not a Gundam! I swear Yankess should not be allowed to touch anime.
The only other interesting thing that happened to me recently was that when I was busy playing a bear visited my garden, tore open a trashbag and strewn trash all over the lawn in search for food, excavated a small graveyard my mother made for wild critters who perish in our garden, and left. My stupid son Timmy apparently wants to be eaten by a bear or a fox, because he escaped and was playing hide in seek with me for hours before climbing through a hole in the fence to play in the field, forgetting where the hole was, and needing to be rescued. Also some very odd purplish pink poppies are blooming. I guess they enjoy a heatwave, while meanwhile I am suffering and my rare an expensive food items going to waste before I can try them. I thought the sunflowers would enjoy the weather too, but turns out I was mistaken. Well, now I know which seeds to order and which to avoid. I hope to live long enough to see the next generation of the plants blossom. I have three big orders of rare foreign plants already awaiting (which explains why I am notoriously broke no matter how much I earn lol). It is just difficult to continue on living. Very difficult.

Date: 2026-08-04 11:30 am (UTC)I finished Star Trek Picard season one and it ran the gauntlet from Not Very Good to Kind Of Okay then back to Not Very Good.
It had commentary on the aftermath of 9/11, the break-up of the Soviet Union, the refugee crisis and other stuff, but then at the end the central theme turned out to be 'Can robots and organics live together?" And it didn't even do that very well...
It's odd that Picard's friend is a Space 9/11 Truther, but I guess the show is mostly dedicated to Space 9/11 conspiracy theories than analyzing the impact it had on the Federation.
You know I've never watched Voyager but I can't imagine making Seven of Nine a gun totting anti-hero was a popular creative choice.
There was a wonderful line of exposition where a guy went "Oh that's right Picard was assimilated by the Borg. I somehow manged to forget that."
I think the bit I think about the most was in the last episode where Picard is facing down a Romulan armada and there trying to think of a plan. Then the other character goes "Wait a minute! The Picard Maneuver from season one of The Next Generation! We can use the magical device we were given last episode which can do anything to create an army of holographic ships so they won't know which ship is the real one!"
My God they didn't even mention the Picard Maneuver before this conversation...
I did like how there was a Romulan spy working undercover in Starfleet pretending to a Vulcan, but the other Romulan spy with her had special ear surgery so she could disguise herself as a human (and she didn't even do anything during her time undercover, before she had surgery to return her ears to normal and left for the Borg cube).

... which, like... okay, confuse new viewers. Yeah, that makes sense.
But given the whole point of the show was bringing back Picard for new adventures... that seems like worrying about a horse who not only bolted, but whose grandfoals have died of old age.
It's the impetus for Seven's shift that sticks in the mind.
Like, speaking as someone who has no opinion about Icheb... that seemed gratuitously horrible.
I think some Romulan spies are like the Master over in Doctor Who.
Whether the disguise works or even actually accomplishes anything doesn't matter, they just like dramatically unmasking themselves and going "HA! Fooled you!"

Date: 2026-08-04 11:45 am (UTC)After actual years, the local council's finally started on demolishing the derelict buildings next door. Which is fan-fucking-tastic as it was getting beyond stupid. Between the heatwave and school holidays, little bastards were breaking in there every. Single. Day.
Was telling myself "oh, well, at least none of them have been starting fires."
Then one of the family went to had a look - security alarms working so well they and the dog could just stroll right on in - turns out some of them had been starting fires.
Golly, there's a new Spider-Man movie out and wouldn't it be so nice if no news sites would spoil what's probably meant to be a major twist right in the headline of their arti-oh well never mind i guess.
Speaking of Marvel, they've not been having a great week.
After announcing Wonder Man was getting a season 2, it's suddenly been cancelled for what appears to be no reason whatsoever.
I mean, I don't like Wonder Man in general, and haven't seen the show, but still. That's a harsh blow.
And the Blade movie has been cancelled because Ali walked.
Can't blame him, because it was stuck in Development Limbo.
Apparently Marvel Studios is still working on that Nova movie, but at this point it wouldn't be a surprise if the next big announcement was immediately followed by someone popping up from behind Feige and going "PSYCHE!"

Nightcrawler tries to save someone who legitimately doesn't deserve the effort. But if he didn't, he wouldn't be Kurt.
[SPOILER] turns out to have been killed by one of those oddly selective death-laser beams which instantly vaporise Irishmen, and graphically cook Arties, but when turned on a teenaged(?) girl only lightly bruises her.
"I'm not dead, you moron! I'm just unconscious!"
The X-Men go to the Savage Land, forgetting what always happens when you go to the Savage Land: First, you crash. Then you get attacked by an extremely inaccurate T-Rex.
Val Cooper continues to be the worst. It's like after Gyrich died, all that jerkassery transferred over into her.
I swear, Apocalypse - the guy who tried to obliterate time and space - is somehow more tolerable.
(It'd help, it'd really help, if she could just one. Damn. Sentence without insulting or threatening someone she was supposed to be friends with.)
One last Marvel bit, I promise.
Been re-reading Annihilators. It's a smorgasbord of deep cuts, never mind the back-up Rocket & Groot story, where the villain is one of Adam Warlock's old one-offs.
(only knew about them aforehand from one of the handbooks.)
But golly, anyone not up on ROM might be a little lost...
House of the Dragon continues to be House of the Dragon.
(One of the funniest bits over the last few days was complaining that Helaena isn't as dramatic as her book counterpart.
... I'm not sure whoever wrote that has actually read Fire and Blood.)

Also let's be real the show was really, really boring. It just meandered, and could have been 6 episodes instead of 8 (but we keep the Doorman episode). Most of it felt like late-season Entourage episodes, and was basically the Surf Dracula meme given physical form, no matter how many others try and gaslight us otherwise.

Date: 2026-08-04 12:02 pm (UTC)Iron Man: Director of SHIELD. Civil War made me hate Iron Man, so why would I inflict this on myself? Clearly I am a masochist. Also, damn this book for making me sympathise with Tony during the World War Hulk tie-ins.
Justice Society of America: The New Golden Age. Degaton really is an insufferable villain. Is this how people feel about Mr. Sinister? I’m surprised Stargirl isn’t made out to be more important in this particular run given who the writer is. It was nice to see Helena Wayne Huntress exists again. Also, where is Hawkman? Is he dead again? It has been a couple of reboots since I last read the Justice Society, so I’m not sure what his deal is at this present time.
Knight and Squire. I got a kick out of all the British in-jokes. My favourites are the Cidermen and Double Entendre, a pair of twins who only speak in innuendos and who seem to be modelled on Frankie Howerd. Ooh, no, missus!
Man-Thing. The creature is captured and put on display. It all goes horribly wrong, to absolutely nobody’s surprise. Reed Richards and Tony Stark are on the board of trustees, so make of that what you will.

I had signed up for two “play to win” events for Upper Deck’s Legendary Deck Building Game system, one for Game of Thrones and for the DC comics version. I won both of them which turned out to be as much blessing as curse because they were both really heavy things I had to lug around for the rest of the day and made packing my suitcases nearly impossible. In the end by throwing away some of my socks, wearing the long pants I had packed instead of the shorts, wearing a jacket in the extremely hot Indianapolis weather with the pockets loaded down, and storing games inside of other games I was able to just barely get everything home
Ultimately a fun but exhausting experience and I can’t wait until next year.

Date: 2026-08-04 01:59 pm (UTC)Over on Book of Face I'm running an 'amazing cartoon' intros month - partly prompted by having a couple of weeks off from a pretty demanding job and my brain has decided it would like to be somewhat creative now and again. I am of course picking some nicely esoteric as well as personal favs among the daily choices (my cousin is lobbying for Mr Rossi, he got Willy Fog in the original language instead!)
Elsewhere, I've finished cataloguing all my 2000ADs and can see the point in the low 1000s when I realised I was only reading it for Dredd and switched to the trade collections. Still got all the related specials from the mid 80s to mid 90s to sort through, and a while heap of Megazines. But soon, there will be order where once there was chaos!
Started watching Murderbot and have so far been delightfully engaged by its bite-sized cynicism and insights into the human condition in a way Data never quite managed.

The whole thing about their names, which went on WAY too long and wasn't that funny to being with. Either give them actual names which Adam learns, or just roll with the silliness of the original cartoon and toyline and make "Ram Man" an actual titles.
Adam's heartfelt reunion with his father, when Randor had been a dismissive SoB to Adam as a kid, even Duncan was seemingly appalled at how bad at being supportive Randor was to his only child. It felt like Randor hadn't earned that level of love from Adam, even if Adam was the kind of guy to give it.

Like, for example, giving his awful parenting some sort of inciting incident, like, oooh, his baby daughter being abducted by faceless persons unknown, leading to him being unnecessarily tough on Adam because of that trauma.
Wouldn't excuse it, but the audience could see why he might be thinking that way.
Then we get the credits scene, where no-one seems that tremendously fussed about Adora having been snatched up by some evil horde.
I know they were kind of busy with Skeletor running the place the last decade and a half, but still! That's her baby. Most parents would be digging up every stone for even half a chance of false hope.
"She'll be fine."
"So... shouldn't we go looking for her?"

I'd been browsing the first three volumes as a distraction from working on the baby quilt WIP, and decided on the spur of the moment to get a few more on Kindle. I've always been a sucker for the JLA-JSA team-ups.
I really enjoyed the Worlds Finest annual. Waid really captured the essences of Alfred and Jonathan Kent, and the deathtrap Luthor devised was terrible and hilarious all at the same time. :)
