I posted this before but with the image host down I figured I'd give it another go. While this was first published in Clowes' Eightball anthology it's since been reprinted as it's own book.

(Also true of other forms of serial entertainment, such as Golden Age Saturday matinee serials and Old Time Radio dramas—which can make a feature pieced together from unedited episodes an exercise in tedium; that was the main reason I handed off The Return of Chandu to a Béla Lugosi completist.)
(And kudos to The Phantom (1996) for summarizing the hero’s origin story and legacy in a brief prologue and then plunging into the action.)
