Great Ball of Leather!

big-ball10th-14th Century Ball
Balls are one of the most common toys throughout time and a myriad of cultures. Depictions of different games played with either a ball or a ball-like object can be found as early as Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt. The exact date of the first ball unknown, although highly debated. Medieval manuscripts show people playing many different types of games using balls: marbles, bocce, stool ball, all the way to tennis. These balls were many different sizes and made of many different materials depending on the game.

The Design
There are three basic constructions to balls dating from the second through the seventeenth centuries (see Mould, page 3407). I chose to use design b using dyed sheepskin from a local leather shop (I was hoping for white, but it was too pricey). The two pieces were cut to the same size circles. Due to some differences in the skins, they did not stretch equally. The seams are sewn together with linen thread coated in beeswax using a butted edge seam except for where the leather proved to be too thin to withstand the strain. The next set will be done of a thicker piece of vegetable tanned calf skin. I first sewed the seam half way round before placing my filling (I’ll talk about that below) into it and finishing the ball.

The Filling
Medieval balls were filled with a huge variety of things. According to Mould, balls were usually stuffed with moss, wool or leather scraps, with some examples having a central core of wood or tightly packed moss wrapped in leather strips. Still others are thought to have been filled with sawdust, chalk, pebbles and earth. The Museum of London has a tennis ball dating from 1485 AD - 1603 AD that is stuffed with hair. The tighter packed the ball was, the more bounce it has. To get a decent bounce I first fit a bunch of Spanish moss into the empty ball to get a good estimate for the core of the ball. I then took it out and wound wool yarn around it to both compact the moss core and give it a good shape. This also made stitching the rest of the leather covering much easier and cleaner. In the end, the ball does have some bounce, fine for playing with as seen below, which appears to be a game akin to volleyball without a net.

If you have questions about this one-day workshop please drop us a note at dcamville@hughes.net or give us a call at 530-621-2430.

NOTE #2: The house will be open from Friday 3/12/11 at 3:00pm to Monday 9/6/10 at 3:00pm. We will have some form of dinner for folks arriving on Friday, Three meals on Saturday and two on Sunday. CRASH SPACE/CAMPING: We have LOTS of room for tent set up and crash space (you will need to RSVP for crash space) for those traveling from outside the area. If you need crash space over the weekend please let us know by dropping us a note at dcamville@hughes.net by March 8th, 2011.

COMBATIVE ARTS TRAINING: SATURDAY: START TIME IS 9:00AM SHARP (it gets warm up here so be ready)! DO NOT BE LATE! This is going to be a one-full-day workshop geared towards improving the combative art skills used in the SCA and WMA forms of Armored Combat. This will be a good starting point for newer student and a wonderful refresher for those more experienced combatants. We will be TRAINING with drills, slow-work, focused sparring and more. A large portion of the day will be partially unarmored (helms/pads/gambesons) and the latter part of the day will be armored. One of our PRIMARY focuses for the day is DEVELOPING YOUR FIGHTING STRATEGY. Should be a blast! SUNDAY: It will be a bit less structured. We may work on a variety of different skills (we even teach a class with horses as your sparring partner! Curious? Then RSVP!). We may take walking tour of Old Placerville after we are done training and working on projects. There are some AWESOME shops in “Ol’ Hangtown”. See the notes below for more information.

A&S ACTIVITIES: We’ll have lots of room to work on projects and there will be lots of A&S stuff happening…along with staying cool inside! Horse 101 will happen. Soap Making will happen. A nature walk will happen! Bring your projects and enjoy the day!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: Everyone: Bring your bedrolls, comfy clothes, your favorite beverages, music (CD’s) and whatever you need to feel relaxed. Side dish contributions are ALWAYS welcomed! If you plan on taking the nature walk good hiking boots are recommended. When working with the horses, boots are a MUST and jeans are STRONGLY advised!  Combatants: Bring your fighting gear and a note pad. If you have loner bits, please bring them. Some loaner gear may be available. As part of the day will be unarmored we recommend training in your gambeson or other fighting clothes. Bring your A&S projects too. We have plenty of space to work on various projects. A chair is also recommended. Your favorite sports beverage is a good idea. Water and lemonade will be provided. When not in a fighting class mundane dress is fine. You can wear garb if you want to. You will also need to PLEASE BE ON TIME! We have LOTS of material to cover and we need everyone up to speed and ready to go. Non-Combatants: Bring your projects, your note pads and a great attitude!

FOOD: As stated a majority of your meals are covered for the weekend IF YOU RSVP by March 8th, 2011! Please let us know if you have any food allergies at that time. Side dish contributions are AWLAYS welcome.

ROUND TABLE/REVEL: There will a revel evening! Roundtable type discussions will occur. Bring your positive attitude and get ready to have some fun in the country!

PARKING: We will have a cleared parking area along the RIGHT SIDE of the long driveway. Please look for the PARKING signs to help you out. Please be courteous when you park (consider the space your vehicle REALLY needs to be parked) and try not to block folks in.

ANIMALS: Please note that there are three horses and two friendly dogs on site. Dogs are welcomed BUT they should be leashed up, if your canine has wanderlust, as the surrounding area is pretty vast, heavily wooded and there is an irrigation canal nearby. Please keep your dogs tethered to something (we have two dog runs and a large kennel available) if you are concerned about them getting lost. If your pups know enough to come home after an adventure it is up to you! Stickers and ticks will be in season! The horses are not afraid of dogs and can potentially kick at them if pestered. Just an FYI.

HISTORIC GOLD COUNTRY: Placerville is in the heart of California’s Gold Country. There is a lot to see and do in the area. “Old Hang-town” is worth a stroll to see all the amazing shops and eateries. Coloma, which is where gold was found, has a great historic area with period reenactment done! Amazing hiking and horse trails abound. Wonderful wineries and restaurants can be found throughout the region. Come and make a weekend out of it and enjoy the region!

WANT TO TEACH AN A&S CLASS? We have some fun classes set up! If YOU want to teach an A&S please let us know at dcamville@hughes.net ASAP so we can get you on the schedule!

DIRECTIONS: From Hwy 50 heading towards Placerville, take the Missouri Flats Road exit and head SOUTH. Follow Missouri Flats Road (you’ll pass several strip centers) until it T-stops at Pleasant Valley Road./Hwy. 49. Make a LEFT on Pleasant Valley Road. You’ll go through part of Diamond Springs (really cheap gas there). There is an unoccupied office building on the right hand side just before Hanks Exchange Road. Make a RIGHT on Hanks Exchange Road.  Make a LEFT on Ranch Road (it’s gravel from here). Stay on Ranch Road (there is a fork and going to the right puts you back on Hanks Exchange). Make a RIGHT on Kenwood Rd. Make a SHARP LEFT at Possum Creek. At the end of Possum Creek there are two long driveways. Take the one to the LEFT and it will lead you to the house (there may be some farm equipment as  landmark…yeah, really). We’ll leave the lights on for you! For our “city friends” please be mindful of the wildlife. Lots of deer and turkey walk around in the evening and can cross the road at the most inopportune times. It is also VERY dark on the roads so take your time driving. Look for the signs that say PARTY in calligraphy to help guide your way!

We look forward to sharing the weekend with you!

Combative Arts Classes to begin in January...

As part of my promise to HRH Catherine to foster the combative arts I will be hosting a series of combative arts classes starting on Wednesday January 12, 2011 at the Golden Rivers practice/gather which is held at Carmichael Park (5750 Grant Ave. Carmichael, CA).
Classes will begin at 7:00pm and will last one hour.
Classes will be hosted weekly (weather permitting).
We will focus on the skills needed to become comfortable and confident in the SCA's armored combat activities.
Student do not need armor but should have a "sword length" stick of rattan or wood waster and basic pads. Shields would also be a great idea. Some loaner gear will be available until week 5.
Each class builds upon the material covered in the previous class so it is recommended that student do their best to attend each class.

Also, in conjunction with these classes, Chateau de Camville will be hosting a Combative Arts/A&S Weekend on March 12, 13 & 14, 2011.
The weekend will include at least FIVE meals and a revel, lots of training, classes, laughter and fellowship. Camp and crash space are available when you RSVP. We are looking for teachers to share an art or science that are passionate about. If you want to share your skills with others please let us know. The weekend will be held in Mountains Gate at 2735 Possum Creek Lane in Placerville, CA. Watch for a post containing further information soon.
