Following last summer’s algal bloom, the Giant Australian Cuttlefish population has deceased by a devastating 97%. Last year, 63,000 cuttlefish were recorded. This year only 1,811.

Cephalopods (generally speaking) can rebound faster than species that take decades to reach sexual maturity, but a reduction this drastic is going to take years to recover from.

I was lucky enough in 2024 to be able to visit the mating aggregation in person. It was a breathtaking spectacle, with gigantic cuttlefish hovering over the sea floor as far as the eye could see. Watching them perform color-changing rituals I had only seen in nature documentaries was honestly the most magical thing I’ve experienced in my entire life. I hope they can recover so future generations can witness that magic too.

I walked outside to find a stinkbug bonanza on the anise hyssop this morning. It’s always hoppin with bumblebees but this is new!

hello! did the Squid Facts website ever happen to sell frog facts calendars? I thought I remembered that listing but when I checked the shop it wasn't there, so I don't know if I'm misremembering or if it's just out of stock. (in the second case, do you know if it'll ever be stocked again? or was it a one-time-only project?)

We had to make frog facts by hand, applying each sticker individually which really did a number on my wrist. I probably have a few left in the stock room though, email me if you want one of those. SkypeAScientist@gmail.com
