Yes! We are members so we get to go to the Super Sekrit Museum Nerds Preview Party. Exciting times.
Oh foo, car repair. I just got the price for putting Herself on my insurance once she has her own license and I think it's a good thing that they give you that dollar figure six months before your child gets licensed, so you have some time to adjust to the idea.
No, 2:30 to 4:30 but I don't think they let you in the Benaroya Wing for flat soda and crackers unless you are A Supporter of the Institution.
She has been driving on private roads down at my folks' for a while, but...yeah! I am hoping she will be able to drive some on her own this summer break. For obvious reasons I think it's important for her to have the full range of independent survival skills...and also we've had at least one time when I would really have liked to have someone to drive me to the Urgent Care, but she wasn't street-legal.
It's not a small expense, though, even if I put her down as occasionally driving my car, so I think we'll play it by ear and see how much driving she'll be doing on her own before we convert the learner's permit to a license.
Re Urgent Care ferrying: My mom planned her eye surgery for the summer of my learner's permit, so that I could be her chaffeur all summer while she couldn't see properly.
And yes, I can absolutely see why you want her to have the full independence skill-set.
And yay for experience on private roads! May she be nice and safe and non-flustered when she hits the public ones.
That is smart! I don't anticipate having any big physical setbacks like that, but one never knows, and I've been nervous for years now about having to ask one of the neighbors to ferry me to the ER if something really exciting happens (the only time it did, the kids called M. and made him come over even though I insisted I was fine, just because they found it so worrisome that their grownup was sitting on the kitchen floor refusing to get up, lol).
Given how much better she does with new experiences when she gets to take them at her own pace, I thought we'd better start really slow and build up piece-by-piece. There is a lot to driving and it's not exactly a topic that's generally taught with the anxious autistic teen in mind.
I'm so happy for her that you could arrange for her to learn it that way, at her own speed. My own driving lessons were incredibly anxious-making (to the point that I came home in tears from my first one swearing never again.) I learned anyhow, but anything that might back the pressure down a notch is a good thing, I think.
I was icing it! It was fine! I mean, for values of fine that include spending most of a week on crutches. It cracks me up that I do the insane stuff I do outdoors and I'm fine, and what gets me is random shit like dropping a glass bottle of barbecue sauce on my foot in my own kitchen.
Yeah, when I got to driver's ed I was the only person who didn't already know how to drive, and I almost failed the class as a result. It was so stressful.
