Mama's Pros and Steel had a fire and Jess needs our help

Many of you know Jess of Mama’s Pro’s and Steel – he does a lot of paneling at our cons and is also a vendor.
I know many of you are friends of his as well….

Jay Pearson has posted the following information:
From: Jay Pearson [mailto:jlpearson@comcast.net]

For those who do not know Jess’s shop burned this morning. Here are some particulars straight from the horse’s mouth so to speak.

The fire occurred between 2:30 and 5 this morning, engines from both the reservation and Marysville quickly responded and after a 2+ hour battle got the fire under control and out. Preliminary investigation has labeled it “as undetermined cause of the fire”, there is some speculation that it may have been arson but nothing solid enough for the investigator to label it as such with out further proof. Damage to the shop is total, some fire damage to the House and extensive heat damage to the parked vehicles near the shop. As the article states there was no loss of life which Jess is very thankful for. However this right on the tale end of his loosing Sue (not more than 8 weeks ago) has been quite a blow to him.

I just spent about 3 hours talking with him and finding out what his plans are. He intends to rebuild the shop on the back of the property. He will need help though and at my request he has given me a list of items he will need eventually to rebuild his shop and get back to full on sword making. I will pass this list on to those that email me as it is quite extensive for this post. He still has tentative plans to attend Crown, but with what little stock he has left that was not destroyed in the fire his focus is getting what little of the shop remains up and running as soon as possible. Currently they do not have a phone, power or water at the ranch as the fire destroyed the entire power pole which housed not only the main power box for the property but the meter as well. They are waiting on PUD to tell them what type of box is needed for them to regain power and water (pump house was wired directly to the pole), until such time as this occurs they are doing OK. There is propane to run the heat and stove.

Please pass this on to any whom you believe could help either in supplies to rebuild the shop or tools to outfit it. As I know more I will pass it on to you all.

Jay

To this I want to add that I suggested an account be set up to help replace all the tools and such. I had asked about insurance and was told that the thought is that insurance will not cover the shop or the tools. So, Jay set up an account –

From Jay:
Have set up an account with Wa Mu for Jess it is 3154960386 any Wa Mu will take a deposit for this account. It is only up for 6 months so there are no taxes that can be slapped against it hurting Jess. If they do not have the account number handy they can walk in and verbally tell them it is for Jess Roe.

Jay

Please forward this along to all trying to help.

Here is also a list of the tools that need replacing if anyone has anything they want to donate contact Jay at jlpearson@comcast.net – he can facilitate the giving with you.
Define Hand tools as everything used for leather working wood working and metal working from rough out to super fine grade.

Friends from the Internet

If there are one or more people on your friends list who make your world a better place just because they exist, and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the Internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.
Seattle in 2011

Hey I have a group for you all to go join...

We have a group for the Seattle in 2011 Worldcon bid - the name is seattle_2011 please go join it.

Seattle in 2011 is a bid to host the 69th World Science Fiction Convention ("Worldcon") in downtown Seattle in 2011. The bid hopes to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Seacon, the 1961 Worldcon in Seattle.

Why Seattle?
Well we are a wonderful place with wonderful people and we would love to share it with the rest of the world.
**I bet you could tell me a lot more reasons why Seattle is the perfect place to host the Worldcon in 2011 - leave your comments on the site!**
Seriously though there are hundreds of reasons and I think it would be fun to make a list - if we can make 100 good reasons to have a Worldcon in Seattle we will add it to the Web site @ www.seattlein2011.com and maybe send it out in our upcoming publications.

Qualifications:
Well we do know that we don't know everything there is to know about running a Worldcon, but we do have large regional and specialty conventions in Seattle who we will rely on for support and advice as well as our friends and colleagues from around the world. Norwescon is over 3000 people yearly in Seattle, Sakuracon is now over 15,000 and we have bid staff from both of them. We have successfully hosted 3 Westercons in Seattle, and several in Portland, one in Eastern Washington and one in Vancouver BC, and we have had many other roving conventions of varying size such as World Horror, World Fantasy, Left Coast Crime, Potlatch and others visit our fine city. We also hosted the North American Science Fiction Convention here with some of the same staff that will be working on a Worldcon here should we win. And contrary to popular belief it didn't fracture fandom and no one got divorced because of it.
Our bid committee has many people that have worked on Worldcons and in smaller conventions all over in all capacities.

Weather:
Well you know it doesn't always rain in Seattle and August is one of the most beautiful months in the Pacific Northwest.

Travel:
We are a hub so you can get here from most anywhere and unlike some places during Aug. your plain probably won't be canceled or run late.

We also have a Yahoo group we would love to have anyone interested join:

Sometimes I wonder

You know there are times that I can't help but just shake my head at wasted opportunities. We just don't understand sometimes that when "marketing" ourselves we have to present a marketable product - something the buyer wants. It's okay to have other things in the package but FIRST you have to sell the PACKAGE!! In my opinion this group of authors forgot they had a package to sell and instead let all the individual components of the package rant on about whatever their personal pet peeve was....

Science Fiction Mavens Offer Far Out Homeland Security Advice
http://www.nationaldefensemagazine…

Now a fixture at Department of Homeland Security science and technology conferences, SIGMA is a loosely affiliated group of science fiction writers who are offering pro bono advice to anyone in government who want their thoughts on how to protect the nation.

The group has the ear of Department of Homeland Security Undersecretary Jay Cohen, head of the science and technology directorate, who has said he likes their unconventional thinking. Members of the group recently offered a rambling, sometimes strident string of ideas at a panel discussion promoting the group at the DHS science and technology conference.

Among the group’s approximately 24 members is Larry Niven, the bestselling and award-winning author of such books as “Ringworld” and “Lucifer’s Hammer,” which he co-wrote with SIGMA member Jerry Pournelle.

Niven said a good way to help hospitals stem financial losses is to spread rumors in Spanish within the Latino community that emergency rooms are killing patients in order to harvest their organs for transplants.

“The problem [of hospitals going broke] is hugely exaggerated by illegal aliens who aren’t going to pay for anything anyway,” Niven said.

“Do you know how politically incorrect you are?” Pournelle asked.

“I know it may not be possible to use this solution, but it does work,” Niven replied.

“I cannot guarantee I’m going to be a great help to Homeland Security,” Niven said earlier.

Pournelle said that once mobile phone technology and the devices tacked on them to take pictures and record video become more ubiquitous, then ordinary citizens will be empowered to take security into their own hands — a prediction some have said already has come to pass.

“My guess is we won’t need quite so many paid agents of the state to do that for us, which means maybe we can try being a republic instead of an incompetent empire,” he said, then railed against the Transportation Security Administration for treating passengers like “subjects” rather than “citizens.”

The 45-minute panel discussion quickly deteriorated as federal, local and state homeland security officials, and at least one congressional aid, attempted to ask questions, which were largely ignored.

Instead the writers used their time to pontificate on a variety of tangentially related topics, including their past roles advising the government, predictions in their stories that have come to pass, the demise of the paperback book market, and low-cost launch into space.

David Brin, keeping on the topic of empowering citizens with mobile phone technology, delivered a self-described “rant” on the lack of funds being spent to support citizen reservists to back up the military, homeland security officials and first responders in times of crisis.

“It is impossible for you to succeed without us!” he shouted at the assembled officials, while banging his fist on the table and at one point jumping off his chair to wave a mobile phone in their faces.

SIGMA is the brainchild of Arlan Andrews Sr., who noted that many of the writers have advanced degrees, have jobs with the government or have been hired to advise the government in the past.

“If you like the ideas these people have, and you’re from the government, feel free to come talk to them,” Andrews said.

I am so very tired of Ice!

So, here it is...  another beautiful icy flipping morning.
I really hate Ice, I don't like getting up in the morning to begin with and Jerry spoiled me for too long bringing me coffee and being my alarm in the mornings.  Waah!  I have to hear an alarm, drag my own self out and make my own coffee all before I hear a friendly voice *pout* amd then I have to contend with ICE on top of it.

I think Ice is pretty, in pictures, melting from the roof, in someone elses world.  But not where I have to walk and drive.

Silly, I know, but I just had to tell someone -- I REALLY HATE ICE
