Friends Only (Mostly)

I have decided to make my LiveJournal mostly accessible to friends. It has always been about 50/50, but as I'm going through it now, I'm making almost all of my older entries friends-only.

ACTA in a Nutshell –

What is ACTA?  ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.

Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”

What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

Essential ACTA Resources

  • Read more about ACTA here: ACTA Fact Sheet
  • Read the authentic version of the ACTA text as of 15 April 2011, as finalized by participating countries here: ACTA Finalized Text
  • Follow the history of the treaty’s formation here: ACTA history
  • Read letters from U.S. Senator Ron Wyden wherein he challenges the constitutionality of ACTA: Letter 1 | Letter 2 | Read the Administration’s Response to Wyden’s First Letter here: Response
  • Watch a short informative video on ACTA: ACTA Video
  • Watch a lulzy video on ACTA: Lulzy Video

Say NO to ACTA. It is essential to spread awareness and get the word out on ACTA.

Dr. King

Formspring:
Among historical people, who would you most like to meet?
Reverent Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Without any doubt! I want to let him know how much his work inspired change and acceptance in the future, how his essays an speeches are still read, recited, and studied for their powerful emotion and brilliance! And how his words can be applicable, not only to racial acceptance, but acceptance and love of natural diversity of any kind.

He is one of the most inspiring human beings I can think of, and even though there are others in history- artists, scientists, and mathematicians, who are great and heroic to me- I think that knowing the change that Dr. King inspired, and is still continuing to influence, I would love to have the honor of meeting him and having a conversation with him!!

This is especially true on this day.

Autism versus Retardation

I actually started crying while watching this video...

http://youtu.be/vNZVV4Ciccg

I can't imagine what it must have been like for her to live most of her life up until this point, trapped in a prison of her body, confined by the overwhelming sensations around her... I can't even imagine having the capability to understand the world, but not respond to it in a way that the world can understand you in return. I started crying... how many thousands of other people suffer like this without a way out?

I'm happy that she was able to find a mode of communication... to be happy and expressive in a healthy way and independent in her life.

Fish

I love fish... if it weren't for delicious seafood, I could easily become vegetarian/vegan. I respect the lives of animals (although I feel that there's nothing wrong with eating them, if they're humanely raised and killed), and greatly respect the vegan lifestyle and the concentration on environmental protection that comes with it. For that reason, I eat as little beef as possible, try to eat free-roaming chickens (I don't eat that much chicken overall), and make sure the fish I buy are types of fish that are raised in environmentally friendly ways.

So I wanted to make a list of Fish that are safe to eat in terms of having low mercury content, as well as environmentally friendly. This is mostly for my own reference, but if it's helpful to others, I'm glad for that as well!

This list is according the the Environmental Defense Fund:

Best Choice
These fish are not only low in mercury and other contaminants, but also high in Omega-3 oils.
    Char : Arctic (Farmed)
    Mackerel : Atlantic
    Oysters : (Farmed)
Sablefish / Black Cod : Alaska / Canada
    Salmon (Alaskan) : Alaska (Wild)
Salmon (Canned) : Pink / Sockeye
Salmon (Pink / Sockeye) : (currently may contain radioactive contaminants)
    Sardines : United States
    Trout (Rainbow) : (Farmed)
Tuna (Albacore) : Canada / United States

Catching up

Dear LiveJournal,
    Did you miss me?

I cannot even convey how much catching up I need to do. It's been a while since my visit, but I vow to take the next few weeks to get this up to date.

So much going on, and I need to have a place to put these thoughts and ideas of mine (regardless if anyone else cares, haha).

    yours truly,
-sansaii
