The Enslavement of Hazara and Kafir (Nuristani) People

The circumstances of that time indicate that they are slaves because the year this photo was taken was the year the British troops handed Kandahar over to Amir Abdur Rahman Khan. During his reign, thousands of Hazara men, women, and children were sold as slaves in the markets of Kabul and Kandahar, where this photo was taken.
Amir Abdur Rahman Khan (between 1830 to 1844 – October 1, 1901) was Emir of Afghanistan from 1880 to 1901.
During his reign, Abdur Rahman Khan launched campaigns to dictate the people of Kafiristan and Hazarajat. Around 1896 he started a conversion campaign to convert the inhabitants of Kafiristan to Islam, who were at that time non-Muslims and were thus known to the surrounding Muslim population as Kafirs, meaning “unbelievers”. At the time of their forcible conversion to Islam, Kafirs of various ages regardless of gender were enslaved and brought to Kabul. The women were usually mistresses and slaves, saleable chattels and field-workers.
During the same period, some Hazara tribes revolted against Abdur Rahman Khan in favor of Sher Ali Khan. Then to show who was the Amir of Afghanistan, Abdur Rahman Khan legalised the slavery of Hazara people so that they could be bought and sold in the market. In various newspapers at that time, it was reported that Abdur Rahman Khan had sold 10,000 Hazara captives to pay the expenses incurred in suppressing the revolt.
