He’s powerful as fuck so he becomes a major player in the fight despite himself. It’s bittersweet since he’s healthier now than he was during his first life and Sasuke realized just how much itachi’s illness reduced the gap between them.

A gap that even with all of Sasuke’s power continues to grow ever wider now that itachi has the energy to spare and the opponents to use it on.

Itachi never thought he would come back but now that he was…he had hoped he could get to know Sasuke again. Who he has become.

But no. Sasuke is angry with him for the distance between them and still bitter over all that itachi did to him. It’s….understandable.

Other shinobi are wary of him in the war camp too. They know very well that he’s ex-akatsuki, an Uchiha, an infamous criminal, reanimated, etc.

The only one that treats him warmly is Naruto, the boy that was obsessed with chasing itachi’s stupid little brother. Hes a ray of light in the darkness of itachi’s world.

Before, he used to think that Naruto and Sasuke were a perfect, if odd, match for eachother.

Seeing them fight together, Itachi knows he was wrong.

Try as he might, whether he notices or not, Sasuke holds Naruto back.

His techniques, while impressive and finely trained, lacked Naruto’s raw instincts and strength

Itachi knows he lacks for neither.

He could match Naruto.

He could be at his side.

He could keep that warmth to himself.

I was so scared they were heading for a romance subplot but congrats to Project Hail Mary for going for the far funnier option of 'Trolley Operator' and 'Guy She Is Actively Tying To The Tracks'. What a dynamic. Movie of the year.
