So I'm totally inspired to do this post by
devilduckieee because her musical pimping posts are always so great and I either learn new music or relearn why I love a particular band so much.
So I want to do some pimping of my own.
You may have heard of this singer before. I don't care because you should hear her again because she's awesome. Her name is
Melody Gardot (what an awesome name for a jazz singer I say), and she does jazz/blues. Very Etta James in style, but not quite as sassy. She has a very smooth, soulful voice (I know the adjective 'soulful' is overused, but trust me, when you hear this girl's voice you're immediately hooked. It's very engaging). I don't normally listen to jazz. I like a few tracks when I hear them, but I don't really seek it out. Not the style I immediately gravitate towards. To be honest, I get kind of bored with it usually.
That's why I was surprised to find myself so entranced by
Melody Gardot.
I found out about her yesterday, in a really weird way... I read this one fashion blog and they featured a post of her with some dude who was wearing a masquerade style mask at the Cannes Film Festival. The post was actually mainly about her, and that when they googled her, they found out all kinds of awesome stuff. Apparently she had been in a really terrible accident when she was 19. A car ran through a red light and knocked her off her bike. She suffered serious spinal and head injuries, in addition to losing most of her memory and not being able to speak. She eventually was able to hum simple tunes which eventually allowed her the ability to speak and express herself again. So she really is an advocate for music therapy. But she still suffers an extreme sensitivity to light and sound from the accident, so she wears sunglasses all the time. Oh, and she's also a hardcore buddist and sold her apartment in Philadelphia and gave away her pets so that she could live with as little possessions as possible. Girl is legit. Here's her wikipedia page:
Melody Gardot.
And her voice. Oh, her voice. Sends chills down the spine. She's the real deal folks. Just listen, all right?
