Amr AlMadani شارك ذلكCustodianship of culture is a duty shared by nations. Each country is tasked with keeping a watchful eye on the conservation of the heritage, traditions, and histories that bind society and help shape it on the global stage. By land and sea, China has been connected to Arabia for centuries. Chinese merchants bought porcelain, medicine, and silk to Arabia, with incense, ivory, and other valuables travelling in the opposite direction. In AlUla, Chinese imports dating as far back as 1,200 years have been excavated in the village of Qurh. The significance to the fabric of ancient commerce and life is being showcased to a Chinese audience as part of The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) ‘AlUla, Wonder of Arabia’ exhibition. An immersive introduction to AlUla – its natural scenery, archaeological artefacts, and cultural heritage – for culturally curious Chinese citizens, it features 236 exhibits along with 50 never-before-displayed items. On display in China for the first time – and for only the second time outside of AlUla – it builds on the cultural partnership Saudi enjoys with China. Running until 22nd March at Beijing's Palace Museum, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the exhibition is a new landmark in cultural relations between nations. China’s President Xi Jinping said during his visit to Saudi Arabia in 2022 that: “China and Saudi Arabia have admired each other and conducted friendly exchanges since ancient times." Today through the ‘AlUla, Wonder of Arabia’ exhibition, and the growing number of Chinese tourists in AlUla, we see these exchanges mature and diversify. With a connection forged almost a millennium and a half ago, the two countries continue to demonstrate a mutual desire to engage and share with each other, to learn, and drive new growth in diverse fields. For RCU, China represents an exciting partner: an audience of travellers and investors seeking new connections from ancient foundations of trade, knowledge exchange, and more. Today, we’re entering a new era of collaboration between partners whose stories intertwine across oceans and over centuries. Our shared future, like our shared past, will be built on cross-cultural partnership, heritage conservation, capacity building, respect, and innovation – critical elements fueling AlUla’s regeneration. This is just the beginning of our narration of AlUla’s story. Amr AlMadani شارك ذلكWhen The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) set out to create a new landmark for global visitors in #SaudiArabia, we chose to avoid mass tourism. We recognised the challenges facing cities like Venice and Barcelona, whose tourism goals are obscured by crowds that threaten to overwhelm infrastructure and alienate residents. We wanted to ensure #AlUla wouldn't become a single-stop destination – a place to fly in and fly out, where people experience only a small part of what makes AlUla special and contribute even less to its development. Instead, by curating a sophisticated ecosystem for visitors, we've created our own tourism narrative: a place that invites exploration, offers economic opportunities, uplifts and works with – not against – our community. The inclusivity of our #tourism landscape, with its focus on experiences rich in history and tradition, has activated our goal to develop AlUla into a hub for culture, nature, art, and community. Tourists come to AlUla for the depth of its heritage, warmth of its people, incredible hotels, and landscape of natural and manmade wonders. Our calendar of festivals, sports, and community celebrations manages problems of seasonality. We encourage multi-night stays with trips not just to Old Town, but Khaybar and Tayma, so tourism’s benefits – and challenges – are not felt in just one place or one time of year. Of course, the cooler months are peak season. The popularity of the annual Winter at Tantora festival, with its traditional arts, crafts, music, food, and citrus festival, continues to draw visitors. Winter also supports contemporary attractions. Lebanese star Magida El Roumi performed at Maraya last month, UK singer James Blunt will play in February, while Monaco-based eatery SASS’ will again elevate the F&B scene with its mix of fine-dining and theatrics. By embedding resilience and diversity into our tourism ecosystem, we’re adhering to RCU’s mandate to foster AlUla’s appeal for both visitors and residents. Our municipal and touristic obligations align on this promise. Examples include our #PathToProsperity urban master plan, which is focused on improving quality of life; the beautification of streets to make AlUla more visually attractive; the new 45km-long cycling route, encouraging healthy, eco-friendly travel; infrastructure upgrades, such as a new gas station acting as the ‘gateway to the city’; and ongoing support for farmers growing and selling exceptional local produce. These initiatives elevate AlUla’s charm, encouraging visitors to stay longer, to linger in the plazas, shop in stores, dine in restaurants, explore the streets and landscape, and discover what makes life in AlUla so special for our community. As we enter 2024, we’re closing one phase of AlUla’s regeneration and entering another. In the year ahead, we’ll continue to see our economic, social, and tourism priorities merge with exciting, sustainable, and comprehensive results.

Amr AlMadani شارك ذلكAlUla on a winter evening is full of vibes; groups of people chatting and sipping coffee, streets bustling with shoppers, and, more recently, the energetic buzz of youngsters playing sports. The sight of footballers of all ages flocking to our community playing fields after school represents the first green shoots of success in The Royal Commission for AlUla’s (RCU) plan to grow a grassroots sporting culture. Our aim to make AlUla the most active city in Saudi Arabia is complex and ambitious. We’ve had successes, including hosting major events such as the annual Richard Mille Desert Polo tournament, the AlUla Falcon Cup, and the AlUla Endurance Cup, as well as welcoming the Saudi Tour bike race and engaging in the development of AlUla FC. Only a few weeks ago, we welcomed the Kingdom’s top athletes on the Saudi Olympic Torch Tour ahead of the Saudi Games in Riyadh and officially opened our new 45km urban cycle track, distributing 1,000 bicycles within our community to mark the launch. Runners and cyclists alike were cheered on by residents and visitors, revealing growing levels of enthusiasm for an expanding eco-system of sport. At the root of our plans is our community. We know sport brings people together, driving social cohesion and improving wellbeing. It also boosts economic development and job creation year-round, which is starting to happen on the ground. Examples include the bicycle rental company, Wheels Bike Hub, which is supporting people to explore new cycle routes, and new veterinary clinics to serve the equestrian sector. As proof of our growing profile, AlUla will host the equestrian World Endurance Championship in 2026. In January next year, the Dakar Rally and a rebranded Saudi Tour will visit AlUla; meanwhile, Saudi professional cyclist Moroj Adil continues to go from strength to strength as a key member of Team Jayco AlUla (GreenEDGE Cycling). As RCU moves forward under the vision of HRH Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of RCU, and with the follow-up of our Governor HH Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan Al Saud, AlUla is becoming a beacon for sport as part of Vision 2030’s transformative journey. While RCU did not introduce sport to AlUla – it has always been here, with games played on sandy lots or anywhere you could gather a team to kick, throw, or catch a ball – our work is helping AlUla become more than just a sports-friendly destination; it is maturing into a sporting hub. As facilities and opportunities improve, participation and awareness are increasing in tandem. Amr AlMadani شارك ذلكThe Royal Commission for AlUla’s (RCU) participation in COP28 UAE and Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) is an opportunity to strengthen and expand our work to protect not just the vast wildernesses, lush habitats, and ancient communities of northwest Arabia, but to safeguard a brighter future for our world. COP28 being held in the GCC for the first time demonstrates just how deep our region’s commitment to a more sustainable tomorrow runs, and how this helps to shape and guide the delivery of RCU’s work to comprehensively regenerate AlUla. Our ambition drives RCU’s pursuit of the national goal to create a greener future for Saudi Arabia, outlined in Vision 2030. It is an ambition that aligns with the foundational principles of SGI and the fundamental goals of COP28. At RCU, we understand that ambitions can only be achieved if they are backed by solid action. From the start of our work in AlUla, we recognised that it takes an entire system, a complete strategy, and a clear roadmap, to reach the bold targets we set ourselves. That is why we are deploying a series of connected initiatives with diverse and dynamic aims. In the natural world, efforts to regreen and rewild AlUla’s sprawling nature reserves reinforce our grassroots-to-apex approach that will culminate in the eventual return of the Arabian Leopard. This is further exemplified by our recent partnership with Space for Giants, which places our conversation efforts at the forefront of global conservation dialogue. In our farms and fields, we are rethinking how we can reuse agricultural waste as an organic fertiliser to enrich our soil and crops, which in turn supports ecological restoration efforts to make better, more sustainable use of groundwater to reduce reliance on desalination – further enshrining the principles of a resilient and expansive circular economy within our work. In AlUla itself, we have completed the sustainability pilot project with William McDonough of McDonough Innovation, which has involved auditing our existing projects and gaining an understanding of how sustainability has been applied so that we can adapt and refine our future projects. We are continuing this work in a phase 2, which will evaluate three more projects. Concurrently, our Path to Prosperity master plan is prioritising a new urban cityscape created to meet the needs of our community while following sustainable building guidelines that will reduce energy consumption helping to cut carbon emissions. RCU’s regeneration of AlUla is being built upon a deep understanding of the need to achieve sustainability, alongside a deep respect for our natural heritage and community. At COP28 and SGI, as we engage with the global debate surrounding our environmental and climate challenges, we will demonstrate how through a commitment to actions that are measurable and achievable we can ensure a richer, greener, and more eco-friendly legacy for future generations. #COP28 #SGI #SaudiVision2030 #AlUla

Amr AlMadani شارك ذلكThe recent birth of seven healthy Arabian Leopard cubs at our Conservation Breeding Centre marks a moment for celebration. Individually, these precious cubs represent seven reasons to be hopeful for the future of this proud and important Big Cat species. But they also demonstrate a piece in The Royal Commission for AlUla's (RCU) intricate and comprehensive plans to achieve ecological restoration. The challenge we have accepted – returning Arabian Leopards to their natural habitat and restoring balance to the environment – is undeniably one of RCU’s most difficult tasks. It is not something that can be achieved alone, in isolation, or without the support of our network of partners and the expertise of global conservation specialists. Through our collaborations with, among others, Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Wildlife, the IUCN, and the enduring support of HRH Princess Reema Bandar Al-Saud and the Catmosphere Foundation, we are proud to be delivering the real, positive, and lasting change our ambition demands. As an animal of national significance, the Arabian Leopard inspires our commitment to its protection and eventual reintroduction into the wild. This mission resonates deeply with people in AlUla, across the Kingdom, and further afield while firmly aligning with Vision 2030 and the bold environmental pillars of the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI). The new litter of cubs may have entered the world tiny, blind, and vulnerable, yet their physical state is greatly overshadowed by their significance for the long-term survival of the Arabian Leopards and their essential role in restoring the much-needed ecological balance to AlUla’s natural environment. Nurturing and raising these cubs forms part of our overall strategy to regreen and rewild AlUla. Our work on the ground takes place in parallel with the successes of the Conservation Breeding Centre – now home to a total of 27 Arabian Leopards, up from 14 in 2020 – and the global education, research, and community awareness efforts supported by the Arabian Leopard Fund. Over 50% of AlUla County has been designated as protected areas, covering more than 11,000 sq. km. Patrolling these reserves are 154 wildlife rangers, all from AlUla and highly trained as guardians of a delicate ecosystem. RCU is in the process of reintroducing more than 1,000 Idmi gazelles, Reem gazelles, Arabian oryx, and Nubian ibex to their natural habitat in AlUla, while ongoing environmental restoration is improving soil structure, increasing crop yields, boosting resilience to climate change, and breathing new life into an arid landscape. Our goal of ecological restoration is on track. By 2035, we will have planted 10 million new trees. By that time, these new cubs will be fully grown and, hopefully, parents themselves to healthy litters of young leopards, and AlUla will be lusher, greener, and wilder than ever before. #AlUla #ArabianLepoard

Amr AlMadani شارك ذلكAs technology advances and globalisation enables more people to travel, share, and collaborate in new ways, the parameters that used to define the meaning of culture are blurring. In today’s world, anyone and everyone can play a part in culture and become their own culture contributor: my young daughter with her phone, proud women from AlUla producing traditional handicrafts, the globally renowned musician, and everyone in between. Last week, at Saudi Arabia’s biggest investment forum FII7, I was asked to share my thoughts about the definition of culture alongside other individuals whose vision and achievements champion the power of culture: Martin Sorrell, Founder and Executive Chairman of S4 Capital Group; Burak Cakmak, CEO of Saudi Fashion Council; and Charles Stewart, CEO of Sotheby's. Put simply, I believe culture is the place in between - the cross-fertilisation of fashion, culinary, heritage, stories, nature, and so much more. It is cultural landscape: the relationship between humans and culture. With more than 200,000 years of shared human history in AlUla, we at The Royal Commission for AlUla see the conservation of culture not just as a responsibility, but also as a powerful tool to attract visitors, to share our story with the world, and create a resilient economy for the future. The enabling of culture to thrive can take many forms. RCU’s participation at FII7 and the announcement of several new partnerships demonstrate our ongoing commitment to create a platform for culture to flourish. The AlUla Experiential Tram will enable visitors to enjoy AlUla’s natural and cultural treasures, while residents will thrive in the new thoughtfully designed community Sidrat AlUla, which places quality of life and culture as core design requirements. At the heart of all culture, of course, are people. Following the successful completion of the local ISEF program, Amr was responsible to coordinate and manage the first Saudi students’ delegation to ISEF 2007 in USA (winning Saudi Arabia the first international student award in the field of scientific research). Through TalentS, Amr was tasked to lead the efforts to structure and organize national science fair programs around the country in addition to coordinating the Saudi student’s delegations to ISEF in the U.S. in 2008 and 2009, growing the number of local science fair participants for 25 to more than 800 around Saudi Arabia. -

Mishkat is 4200 square meter facility which promotes innovation in the fields of sustainable energy, encourages dialog and facilitates effective learning experiences. The project team successfully completed Mishkat from concept to opening in 11 months. Mishkat receives 400 students on daily basis and was shortlisted for International Award category in the Museum and Heritage Award 2013.
