stay with me here folks. them being mixed and the two strands of southern horror (the suppression of blackness and the cult-mentality of southern families) that they break away from over the introductory seasons
John Winchester, black but raised craving a proximity to whitness (militarised by the Viet war, and growing up in the 50/60s) - never having connected with his ancestory because of the death of the men of letters.
Mary Campbell, white and poor, her only connections being family as she moves around too much to make friends, never being able to escape her family no matter where she went. Forced to be with family, no escape.
The people love this and thus. I give to my adoring fans.
Black folk are often excluded from southern gothic horror, but they should be an integral part of it. The consequences of slavery have an impact on not only black communities but also white communities, as wealth and oppression are hard to separate.
But let’s start with the Winchester side of things. The Winchester family in canon has strong Christian ties as well as this apple pie American family aesthetic. When considering this, it’s easy to tell a narrative of a disconnect of culture, especially with the disconnect between Henry and John.
Pre-Henry, I believe the Winchester line would have been experienced hoodoo practitioners, the men of letters (MOL) would want people with this sort of knowledge. But knowledge doesn’t override the social hierarchy of the era, the Winchester’s despite being accepted into the MOL still have to maintain this perfect appearance. When the MOL ended, it left John without that connection to hoodoo or his ancestry on that side of the family. But what would continue is how he's being raised - 50s/60s, solidly middle class due to the MOL, probably the only black child in his area. John's mentality growing up would be that of trying to gain proximity to whiteness, as well as the militirisation of black boys in america. John raises his kids with a similar drive, that american dream lifestyle is approximated with whiteness, and while Dean doesn't realise that's what his dad raised him to strive for, he ends up following that same mindset for a lot of his life.
With Mary Campbell, we know their family is big. There's a lot of Campbells, and they all seem to be hunters. This reminds me a lot of 'white trash' communities - poor communities where the generations all stay in the same area or profession, unable to afford to move away. Becoming reliant and codependant on family, and falling into a cult-like mindset of 'not abandoning family'. a codependance like this fuelling emotional-incest. Mary wanting to break away from hunting isn't just about the hunting, it's what she had to watch growing up and never being able to escape the emotional-incest network that seemed to be everywhere she went.
Proximity to whiteness, loss of culture and the impact of emotional-incest/familial manipulation and abuse are some major themes in southern gothic horror that SPN can very easily use in it's pre-existing storylines.
a lot of girls go like "i think i could be plural but idk i could just be making it up" until they get an alter that's self-assured and kind of cunty and she goes "What? Of course we're plural. Good grief; the girl could use some rest for once..." it's kind of like being singletbroken by your own headmate

Hi guys! I thought I should just share my whole mini little library of Project Hail Mary-related things so they're all in one place:
It includes:
The audiobook, audio recordings, and commentary all have their properties programmed so they (should) work just like songs with a track number, album cover, artist, and so on if you download them.
There are two audios of the movie, one is the entire film untouched and one is that same audio cut up and broken down into separate scenes for convenience.
Additionally, there are two versions of the transcript, one with time stamps that match the audio and one without. The time stamps (+ their titles from the audio) are outlined in that version, so if you double-click on that tab or click "show outline," they'll all show up and you can pick a specific scene.
The first few seconds of the commentary are missing unfortunately as my US friend who was kind enough to record it for me had some technical difficulties at the start, but the commentary starts around the shot of the robot arms right before the shot of "good luck!" written on Grace's sleeping bag. It's also about 40-45-ish seconds behind the audio recording if you can only listen.
There's also a google doc with some instructions to follow if any of the files aren't working, which usually happens when too many people try to access or download something at the same time.
As always, if anything's not working right or you notice any mistakes in anything, please let me know and I'll fix it as soon as I can!
Apologies for the long and unexpected delay, but the transcript for the director's commentary is finished and now available in the drive!
There are two different versions of the transcript, the first is made to listen along to the commentary, while the second is more intended to be read on its own. The first is a direct transcription of everything that's said (an attempt, at least), while the second is slightly cleaned up for easier reading, meaning things like jumbled sentences and stuttering were removed or reorganised, but nothing has been actually paraphrased or anything. Both are broken down into different scenes based on how their conversation goes, and the listening version includes timestamps.
Like I said in the movie transcript's post, I am not a professional transcriber and this is just something I did for fun, so it is definitely not perfect. Additionally, there are a few spots throughout the transcript where I couldn't figure out exactly what they were saying, mostly because there wasn't enough diction, and those are all marked with a question mark in brackets. So if you know what they're saying in those spots (or any other spots I may have misheard without realising it), please let me know and I'll correct it!
Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God.
THE RETURN OF THE BLOODSHED TO GAZA IN THE MOST BRUTAL WAYS. HAVE MERCY ON US, WORLD.
I say this honestly: we live in Gaza in a reality and a life that even animals couldn’t endure.
The reality here is harsh; I’m exhausted. Please donate and help evacuate us to a safe place.
It’s 3 a.m., and I still can’t sleep. Donations have dropped drastically.

One thing I’ve noticed when having conversations about AI in creative circles is that everyone talks about how to use AI, and whether or not it’s inevitable, etc etc. All front end stuff.
So few people want to talk about the ethics of the back end. I’m not even talking about the plagiarism aspect, because while that’s also shitty, creatives are still more than willing to discuss that.
what they dont tell you about strict dietary restrictions is how incredibly socially isolating it is.
your friends want to go grab something to eat? wait, gotta look up the menu and allergens of the place they want to go. oh, the restaurant doesn't have anything you can safely eat? either go and don't eat anything, don't go, or spend another twenty minutes trying to find another place that DOES have something you can eat.
and if they DO have options, you usually have to tell the server more than once about your restrictions, which is embarrassing because you usually have to talk about your personal medical bullshit to a total stranger, and usually takes a little while because then you might also have to ask for clarification on things like, are your french fries cooked in the same oil as chicken nuggets? yes, you have gluten free noodles, but do you use flour in your sauce?
and!! your options are usually more expensive!! you usually have to pay at least $2 more at a restaurant for gluten free bread, pizza crust, pasta, whatever it is! at least!
also like. potlucks? nope, can't do that unless you can trust every single person bringing something to be careful about cross contamination, and careful about reading all the ingredients on every single thing they use and knowing what is and what isn't okay for you to eat. and you dont know if they washed all their dishes and cookware thoroughly before they made the food! it doesn't matter if you use all gluten free ingredients if you use the same spoon to stir the regular noodles and the gluten free ones!
you can't share food with your friends either. no stealing fries off their plate, no taking the pickle from your pickle-disliker friend, no sharing a sip of a beverage. if they touch your food, then fuck you, you probably can't eat it now, it's been contaminated.
going over to someone's house and just bringing your own food feels shitty but you have to do it, because you might not be able to trust them to make food you can eat! and you don't want to be insulting, but you also don't want to risk getting sick!
and turning down offered snacks sucks. i made these cookies for everyone at work, except you i guess! here, you want a piece of candy? no, i dont have the original packaging for the ingredients list.
it just. sucks. people don't realize how incredibly isolating it is to have to follow a strict dietary restriction.
