I was quite good yesterday and did only work a half day from home - well maybe a teensy bit over a half day - but it was all good as I took my personal work inbox from 275 unread emails down to 20 in just over 4 hours. Everything that needed actioning was actioned and I do have a small number of things flagged our intranet I need to read (but that's info and status updates nothing critical). I'm good with that.

Today was theoretically a half day in the office. I've been sleeping weirdly the last couple of nights (heat and humidity) so I wasn't rushing to get in. Rocked up at just after 11am and sat down to battle the shared inbox down. It had just over 1170 emails (about 300 of those had been actioned by colleagues but not filed because they've been stretched covering for me and they also didn't want to eff up my systems).

Had a quick check in with people and started triaging/filing, nipped out at 1pm with the colleagues who been covering so we could sit in the sun and chat for 30 mins and the back to triaging.

Got so absorbed in what I was doing completely forgot I was supposed to be out by 3:30pm and by the time I looked up it was 4:30pm. Leaving between 4-6pm means sitting in traffic for 2 hours so I stayed until 7pm, got the inbox down to around 450 emails inlcuding actioning a chunk of things that had been issued holding emails.

I feel much better for having done that - even if two half days morphed into 1.75 days!

Left at 7pm, pleasant traffic free journey home which only took 30 mins and stopped off in Lidl to buy healthy food so I can stop feeding myself via Deliveroo - when I had no spoons to function for the first 4 weeks Deliveroo came to the rescue.

I'm on a strict promise to not turn the work laptop on again until Monday - so that means a 3 day weekend.

Tonight I'm loading the car for a tip run, quickly cleaning the kitchen and meal planning for the next 10 days, then cleaning the bathroom (deep cleaned last week) and aiming to be in bed before midnight.

Tomorrow's plan:

1. Gym at 7am
2. Tip/recycling run at 8am
3. Focus on bedroom tidy up 9am to 11am
4. Shower
5. Crochet club 1pm to 2:30pm
6. Tip/recycling run 3:30pm
7. Back to the bedroom tidy up

I hoping that by Monday I'll have cleared the bedroom enough to be able to plan a proper deep clean as well as sorting outvthe tiny front garden.

Having had 6 weeks off after brain and body went "this far and no further" I start a phased return tomorrow.

Half days Wednesday (working from home 8:30 to 12:15pm) and Thursday (office 8am to noon or 10am till 2pm) then I'm off Friday. Plans for the time I'm not working between now and Monday include finishing tidying the bedroom, tidy the front garden and start getting the allotment back into shape.

Next week will be 2 half days and a full day and the following week 2 full days and a half day so by 20 July I should be back to normal. Still will be splitting time between. Working from home and office.

Priority for tomorrow is to triage my personal inbox (250 emails), fill out return to work forms for occupational health and update my car insurance and put in an expenses claim.

Thursday I need to start triaging the work inbox which has some 1100 emails which collgeagues have either partially dealt with, fully dealt with or which need my input. They look like they've done a decent job trying to colour code and tag them so the ones which are ticking can be prioritised.

Then next week its back to inspections - one of my colleagues has booked some in for Monday, Thursday and Friday so I guess those are the days I'll be working.

There are promises that things will be different on my return - I'll be interested to see if those are watertight!

Also why does it feel like its a billion degrees in my flat this evening? Both my phone and weather forecast say its 18C but it feels like 29C. Grrrr.
ruric: (Default)
Day 3 saw me awake early and very happy as the the overnight temps had dropped a bit so windows were open till 9am and the temp in the flat dropped to a bearable 25C.

Windows and blinds shut for most of the day which kept the temps below 30C til late afternoon but there was still a breeze so some relief could be had. Had a catch up call with friends from 7-8pm so was able to keep bathroom door open and stop cats escaping which meant for most of the evening temps dropped to a balmy 23C.

Alas the promised storms did not materialise in London overnight and the humidity rocketed - and this morning has kicked off with high temps and high humidity and consequently at 8am it feels like it's well over 30C already. It's not but it FEELS like it :o(.

I'm off to the exs at 10am to do some laundry and then home for some more sorting, clearing and a tip run before hopefully collecting dry clothes around 4pm.

But first a cold shower!
ruric: (Default)
Yesterday temps in my flat hit 36C in the afternoon - which was less than delightful.

I've upped the amount of water I'm drinking and will be buying some electrolytes today as well - because Inpay closexattention to scientists talking about the dangers of wet bulb temperatures. *G*

Overnight temps are not dropping much below mid 20s this week, but last night there was a bit of a breeze around midnight - so I opened my windows and sat in the bathroom for 30 minutes with the top half of the stable door open to enjoy the slight drop in temps! This sufficiently dropped the temps in most of the flat to 25C so I did get some sleep.

Woke up at 5:30am this morning - kept windows open till 8am by which time it was starting to get hot again so battened down the hatches and all curtains closed.

Unfortunately my flat is E/W aligned - so blazing sun in the bedroom in the morning, then same in the living room in the afternoon/evening and the bedroom pretty much does not cool down.

It's supposed to be 32C today, 34C tomorrow, 30C Saturday and then drop to mid 20s. In theory there's also meant to be a lot of rain on Saturday/Sunday - fingers crossed that drops temps and doesn't just produce a humid stew!

Progress on sorting out the bedroom is non-existent at the moment because days are so hit that lying on the couch and napping/reading is the only viable way to survive!

Making the most of my last days before returning to work - next up is a tip/recycling run then home for a cold shower and to check if I can pop over to the ex's this afternoon with some laundry. And to see if I can make some modest progress on the bedroom today.
ruric: (pic#18359802)
Fortunately the temps didn't hit truly icky levels until 2pm today - by then it was 34C and high humidity until around 11pm. Nothing quite like stewing in your own sweat for 9 hours.

Alas temps still low 20s overnight and no breeze so tomorrow is going to be rough as temps due to rise. So there'll be a wet towel down in the bathroom for the cats and I'll be drinking loads of fluids and sticking my feet in cold water and my head under the cold tap on a regular basis!

Plan for tomorrow is to progress cleaning my bedroom, squeeze in another tip/recycling run and bag up laundry to be done - assuming it's not too hot to move.

Temps supposed to drop to mid 20s by Sunday. And I will finally be biting the bullet and looking to get a portable AC unit this year. Many are out of stock at the moment - but the 30+ degree summer days are happening often enough now to make it worthwhile.

In other news I spent a happy half hour watching the YSL men's summer show this evening because a certain someone from Heated Rivalry was attending - and then gossiping about it in the GC with my fellow GC girls.
ruric: (Default)
Today is supposed to reach 33C, tomorrow to Friday between 33C to 38C and as ever with humidity and Victorian buildings London is not prepared - so the temps in my flat are likely to reach the 40C's at some point over the next few days.

Though I'm not back at work until next week an advisory has gone out to work from home through the rest of this week.

There was a breeze yesterday and some rain both of which are which are very much missed this morning. Humidity is at 84% but at least my living room is currently a tiny bit cooler than the bedroom and I have plans for a cold shower in a wee while. At least temps are forecast to drop to the low 20s overnight.

The Met Office and Mayor have a heat advisory out.

My plan for today - drink plenty of fluids, maybe continue with a little gentle cleaning of my bedroom and see if I can squeeze in a recycling/tip run this afternoon, plus do everything I can to keep the cats hydrated.

THursday orFriday I plan to hustle over to the exes to do laundry- with the forescast high temps and sunshine I should be able to do several loads and get the dry!
ruric: (Default)
I had a late night Saturday night so fully expected to miss the solstice sunrise this morning, but my subconscious must have been primed as I woke just with enough time to hit up the Stonehenge livestream and see the best bits.

And a bonus later this evening as it seems one of my work colleagues was there in the inner circle and she posted pics to the work WhatsApp group!

Since I was awake stupidly early I decided to have a shot at deep cleaning my bathroom. Possibly not the best idea as we're plunging into another period of stupidly high temps for London, but I paced myself through the day and by late afternoon/evening I was switching between cleaning then watching an ep of Heated Rivalry.

Upshot? I reaheated all 6 eps and now have a sparkly, thoroughly clean and organised bathroom. Success!

Tomorrow's plan - tip/recycling run at 8am and then getting to grips with the chaos of my bedroom.

I also managed 3 social things over the last 8 days - which is a positive in terms of kicking the stress/depression into touch.

On Friday 12 I met [personal profile] ravurian at the Peacock Theatre to see the current run of Godz which was a quick trip around Greek mythology performed by a troupe of Aussie comedy acrobat. It was delightful, funny, breathtaking in places and with a cracking soundtrack. Suffice to say I'm now following [instagram.com profile] headfirstacrobats.

Last Wednesday 17 I was away to the Menier Chocolate Factory to see Equus - unfortunately [personal profile] ravurian had to skip to collect Tux from the vets. We'd originally booked as Toby Stephen's (a fave for us both) was playing the role of the psychiatrist, Martin Dysart.

There's a decent London Theatre review and another from AllThatDazzles.

I was 10 when the original play was staged (1973) but was broadly aware of the source material (and surrounding controversy) from 1977 when the film with Richard Burton and Peter Firth was released, and of course the renewed interest when 17 year old Daniel Radcliffe took on the lead role.

The staging of the current run was great, the physicality of the actors/dancers who played the horses was superb, Toby convincing as ever as Martin, and Noah Valentine was fantastic as Alan Strang.

And yet - I don't know whether this is as apparent in other versions but there was a certain through line of a middle aged man yearning for missed opportunities that I find really fucking annoying in any kind of media. You know the whole "I'm stuck in a loveless marriage, things I was once passionate about are now hollow and I see the passion and emotion this young person has and I'm envious." I assume it's supposed to provoke empathy but all I have is rage. *G* Yes sir, your life is miserable, but what are you doing to change things? Maybe I've indulged in too much media about middle aged women who come to the same conclusion and then actually Do Something rather than whine interminably about it.

Anyway fantastic performances, great staging, but it doesn't leave me wanting to see how the film compares to the play.

Finally Friday evening saw [personal profile] ravurian and I up at Union Chapel for the last night of Teddy Thompson's current tour. He played a lot of his old material as well as new, 10/10, very enjoyable, notes!

Why am I posting at 2:30am? Apparently Network rail are doing some work at Tooting station and there's been a very annoying angle grinder or something running for the last 90 mins.
ruric: (Default)
So I've been signed off work since 19 May due to severe stress/depression.

Both GP and work have been super supportive and fortunately working for a local authority I get paid in full for sick leave.

Most of the last 4 weeks have seen me sprawled on the couch napping, reading for a short time then napping again.

Finally started to feel human again last weekend. At GP appointment yesterday we agreed that I'll return to work (phased return) from 1 July.

My plan is to be constructive over the next 13.5 days - clean the flat, do some gentle gardening and allotmenting and have already got time booked to use exes washing machine.
ruric: (Default)
It's been a while since I did one of these.

HOME: currently in the middle of revamping my "Do ALL The Things" list so I can knuckle down and achieve things over summer and autumn.

HEALTH: still not quite built in regular gym attendance. Am back to taking all the supplements as feeling a bit run down and my knee is a bit crunchy right now.

LIFE ADMIN: completely forgot about green waste for cottage and first council tax payments. Dealing with those today. Sorting pensions on back burner until decluttering done - which should reveal where I stashed all the paperwork!

DIGITAL DECLUTTER: looked away from my email for a month - back to purging my main and secondary email accounts and unsubbing from things. Staying on top of transferring To Keep items from tablet to dropbox, have started reviewing and decanting images from phone because it is FULL.

GARDENING/ALLOTMENTING: need a full weekend on the allotment and several evenings on the garden.

COOKING/EATING: have actually been cooking and eating properly!

READING/LISTENING: unsurprisingly I'm reading exclusively Heated Rivalry fanfic and there's so much of it - 33,268 fics as of 1pm today. I'm barely scratching the surface and most of what I've read is sooooooo good. I've broken my own rule multiple times and am reading so many WIPs.

WATCHING: still Heated Rivalry - though I have started to catch up on my back log of other shows. But I feel a proper one episode a day HR rewatch coming on.

CREATING/LEARNING: still have crochet projects underway - but classes were suspended for a while as tutor ended up in hospital with pneumonia. She's out and doing staged return now. Hopefully will be a meet up this Friday.

CATS: all good. They're both being super affectionate at the moment. Cuddles all the time.

VOLUNTEERING: allotment plant sale was Saturday - well attended, bought loads of things.

SOCIALISING: had weekend away with [personal profile] gingerpig as per previous post which was delightful.

WORK: office move done, still under-resourced and under-budgeted - but I just need to hang on
4 more years until 2030 when I can retire.

Today I'm working from home (which means a tip run at 3pm - results of more decluttering) then office days until Friday lunchtime.
ruric: (Default)
Had a lovely Bank Holiday away at [personal profile] gingerpig's.

Drove up Sunday early evening and had a very clear run so arrived in Suffolk just before 8pm - dinner of pizza, wine and chat and before we knew it we were into the wee small hours and retired at 1:30am.

On Monday we manage to leave the house briefly for a wander round the barns (antiques and jewellery) and I may have purchased a few small items which were calling my name. Coffee and cake in the cafe followed by a snacky lunch and we - perhaps unsurprisingly- had 6 eps of Heated Rivalry on the background whilst chatting.

After dinner I talked GP into watching the feeds for the Met gala (who are we and why are we watching this)? We had the feeds from the Mark and Carlyle hotels in on You Tube from 9pm to watch the departures, GP had her laptop queued up to the Vogue feed from the Met which was due to start at 11pm
(to make sure we missed nithing), and I was following the Met instagram on my tablet and in the London Loons Whatsapp chat for gossip.

A lot of time was GP and I saying who are these people (apparently we are now olds and not at all tuned in to pop culture) - fortunately the London Loons WhatsApp mostly knew the answers or the Met insta did. We were all hilariously scathing about most of the outfits (disappointing lack of imagination for most I felt) - though we were very impressed when Connor got his arms out on the Met steps and with Hudson leaving the Mark in little more than a bathrobe and stunning eye make up.

There was a sad lack of stills from the event on Tuesday - but some notable commentary on the fact the boys partied until dawn. If you can't do that in New York in your 20s when can you? I commend their ability to remain upright on so little sleep!

However from Wednesday onwards there's been a positive abundance of behind the scenes pixs and videos, from the sweet, to awkward to hilarious (the vids of Hudson trying to squash Connor into the matador jacket probably caused various designers/fashion houses to have a heart attack whilst the rest of us chortled in glee). I've been deriving a significant amount of second hand joy from them particularly in the hell week of local elections.

Speaking of which I pulled a 16 hour day on Thursday working as a poll clerk in Richmond. In some ways quite enjoyable (we were the party polling station with rounds of applause for first time voters and a chatty electorate), we were visited by many lovely dogs (despite the no dogs allowed sign) and lots of parents bringing kids along who we encouraged to pop the ballot in the box. I crashed as soon as I got in at midnight (fortunately didn't work the count) but the team whatsapp went mad at 4:30am the the news of the landslide. Every single one of the 54 councillors elected in Richmond was LibDem. I'd worried Reform might get a foot in the door but the voters came through with a very clear message.

Unsurprisingly my ward in Merton had voted our 3 Labour councillors back in with a strong majority, but more heartening the Greens were clearly in second place and Reform and the Tories were trounced. Forvoverall control of Merton - Labour have 39 councillors, LibDems 19, Conservative 4 and Indie's 2. Considering how many St George's flags turned up in the borough at one point I was very glad to see Reform not get any seats and they only made it to second place in one of the 20 wards.

Unfortunately nationally Reform took 1400 seats and several councils but their councillors have a habit of either stepping down when they realise the work involved or they say shitty thing which get them suspended. Going on the results of last year's local elections they'll fuck up the councils where they have control and cancel many much needed services whilst increasing council tax. Such absolute muppets.

As usual at work there's too much to do and not enough time but I'm feeling less stressed about it than before my weekend away.

Today was out allotment plant sale - I bought things - and tomorrow I'll be spending a lot of time on my plot strimming, prepping and planting. This evening I went back to my piercer, replaced the 3 studs I'd lost overvthe last few weeks and got my helix done again. There'll be a couple more helix piercings this year and then I start planning new tattoo's for 2027!

Tonight I plan to drink wine, eat a decent meals, clean the flat and read fic.
ruric: (pic#18359801)
TFI almost Friday.

Life has spiralled a little out of control since early April and I may just have a bit of a chance to get a grip this weekend.

Work is very much YUCK rather than YUM at the moment *crosses fingers* that things will improve throughout May.

BUT BUT...I am officially out of the office until Wednesday. I have some minor bits of work to put to bed tomorrow and then I am closing the laptop.

Tomorrow during daylight hours I have tip runs and work to do on the allotment.

Saturday is either more allotmenting or doing the tiny front garden - depending on if there is rain in the afternoon. Saturday evening and Sunday are about bringing more order back to the flat - and more tip/recycling runs.

Sunday late affernoon/early evening I head off to [personal profile] gingerpig for a proper short visit - as opposed to swinging by her place to pick her up/drop her off en route to other places. I'll be there Sunday evening, all day Monday and a chunk of Tuesday before heading home. Time to geek out about Heated Rivalry and other fannish stuff and things.

I've also found my Heated Rivalry peeps online - two group chats on Threads and a very busy London Loons WhatsApp group means I'm back in the deep end of enjoying a fandom and it is epic.

Soooooo much good fic is being produced it's impossible to stay current. Four of the juggernaut WIPs dropped new chapters on the same day (collective fandom meltdown) and names from the past are resurfacing with content. [personal profile] heresluck just dropped a fab Ilya centric video So What. Go watch and leave compliments!

My muses have woken up and what I though might be a short missing scene has grown legs and may turn into something else - if I can carve out time to write. Writing for the first time in 5 or 6 years. Who am I?

I've been buying what little legit merch is available (soundtrack reordered, book which is annotated script and BTS pics preordered). Alas the official merch shop ships to US/Canada only and is somewhat uninspired in their offerings. I know it's nominally a hocky show but I don't want a hockey jersey. But I would love a Boston Raiders T or a "Tell Peepol" or "Stupid Canadian Wolfbird" or even a "You Deserve Sunshine" vest top for the gym. Alas these are not on offer officially.

As might be expected - others are filling the gap!

I bought a WYCTMCTS DGTR CTMH WHSMF ISP NOWK WCHAWOET BCA T hoodie which is very fannishly in your face and huge, soft, comfy and perfect for scuttling to and from the gym. I may have also just had a blow out on T shirts and vest tops on the PageWings site. They have good reviews - unlike many of the other merchandisers - and a London Loon recommended them. They've stopped grouping HR merch as a separate collection and their search function is a bit of a pain - but I found what I wanted. They also have tons of rather lovely stuff.

Speaking of the London Loons a few of us are meeting up in July to go see the Tonsil Hockey podcasters who are hosting a live reread of Heated Rivalry eps 1 and 2 with a bunch of comedians - which may be either hilarious or cringe inducing. But it's a chance to meet new fannish people and I've not done that since my Buffy-Angel-Stargate days. When I got into TeenWolf most of the people were people I knew - but Heated Rivalry seems to be pulling in a whole new crowd. Or smooshing together people from fandoms that don't usually cross-pollinate.

There are also a couple of people going to the last HR party at the Clapham Grand on 16 May. Would have loved to have tagged along but it starts around 11pm, finishes at 3am and unfortunately Ive already committed to work at 10am the next day. So going to have to pass on that one.

Right - off to see if new fic has dropped and clean my kitchen!

Whoopsie!

ruric: (pic#18359801)
Almost a month since my last entry. So what's been going on?

Office move - my org started modernising our main building 18 months ago - they did 1st & 3rd floors. Now it's time for 2nd and 4th. We were supposed to be in our temporary space by 1 April LOOOOOOOL. Needless to say we packed all our shit, it was moved to new office space, but sign off on us occupying said space was delayed until Monday. So I'm behind with a lot of stuff as the things I needed to DO THINGS were inaccessible in the new space and then there was Easter.

Wales - I decamped to the cottage for Easter - and yes I did say to [personal profile] ravurian "Would-you-come-to-my-cottage-this-Easter" IYKYK. Lovely time was had - we chilled out, ate good food and visited some artists studios and bought more art which neithervof us has enough wall space to display. The solo drive up was long (traffic and road works) and took around 8 hours but the cats behaved. While away I watched Heated Rivalry (again - I'm well into double figures now in the space of 6 weeks), spent an afternoon and evening watching the EmptyNetters reaction podcasts which were delightful, especially the last live reaction pod followed by a summary. Watching 3 straight dudes talk themselves into the middle of the Kinsey scale was awesome. I read about 1 million words of fic (30,000+ Heated Rivalry fics on A03 and increasing at around 2k per week) and the quality of what I've read/am reading is astonishing. Also slept for 9 hours a night. The drive home was much better than the drive up.

Gigs and exhibition- Christian Kane was over for a con last weekend - didn't go 'cos they'd sold out of the good tix and not really convenient timing for my friends and I. But he played a gig last Thursday at the O2 Islington which was very well attended so off we went to that instead - which was a lot of fun and a reminder that I do like live music. Getting home turned into a bit of an adventure as it wasn't clear that Angel tube closed at 10pm for track repairs. Next day we met up for lunch (Wagamama in Battersea), a quick look around the Power Station development and shops and then we hit up the Rameses exhibition - which was good. Spent a couple of hours there - took loads of pics of the Egyptian jewellery. Then coffee and cake before we all headed home. Two days of socialing left me wrecked for the weekend though so all I did was nap and read.

Work - is pants - too much to do, not enough time or support so I'm pulling some very long days in the hope that it will give me some breathing space in May. Ha!

Heated Rivalry - yep still way down THAT particular rabbit hole. A lot of the fandom is happening on Threads and I'm there on two group chats (where the squee seems to live) as the people I know are either over it, not interested in the wider fandom (disappointed face) or have not seen it - though I'm working on an office colleague. I forgot how much fun it can be to be in a very active fandom with new filming on the horizon, and a new set of episodes coming and with a cast who are involved in lots of new projects too. I thought I was done with writing until last week when that muscle twitched again. Also the last 10 days have been a TIME to be in the fandom. With the leads stratospheric rise not only is there new TV to anticipate but all the other stuff. Connor's Verizon ad dropped, then Hunter's Laufrey music vid and Hunter's Peleton ad, Rachel and Jacob's panel at the bookcon, Connor's Tiffany dinner/campaign, a ridiculous amount of stunningly artistic photos of various cast members surfacing and then finally the show was announced as a Peabody winner today.

The fandom lost its mind.

The majority of posts have been a collective version of "I am ded, you have killed me", super thirsty posts about the ridiculous amount of new stuff realeased which absolutely shows smart brands and smart boys taking a massive punt at toxic masculinity and leaning knowingly hard into what they are selling, intermingled with detailed media literate analyseis of the books/TV series - so much content on Thread/Insta for that, rabid speculation about S2 and a potential S3 and what other projects are being announced. And then there's more fanfivs, edits, new fic and on and on.

Considering the rest of the world/news is depressingly fucking awful all day/every day and I seriously don't think we'll make it as a society through the next decade it's pretty much saving my sanity to get home in the evening a dive into HR and try to forget everything else for a few hours.

And on that joyful note I'm off to watch a couple of fanvids and see if either of the three huge WIPs I'm reading has dropped a new chapter!

How you are doing?
ruric: (SGA: John/Ronon - double trouble)
Apparently this week is one with too few hours and too many tasks...I'll be pulling a late night or possibly all nighter to try to catch up!

Annoyingly driving home tonight I was fiddling with my ear piercings and popped both the back and the little cabochon off the smallest one on the left hand side - which is now somewhere in my car, so I'll never find it. Back to the lovely Willow I go on Friday to get a replacement stud and I'll get one or two helix piercings done at the same time.

I postponed the work thing I was due to do on Saturday because I need a full weekend to:

* spend some time on the allotment - 26 bags of compost to spread from last weekend
* sort out what I'm taking to Wales besides all my dirty laundry (which will get done up there)
* chill out a bit- maybe?
* sort out the chaos of 300 open tabs over 3 windows..
* make a start on decluttering the living and bedrooms

Seen on insta today all of which sum up my life right now:

* I don't have a train of thought, I have 7 trains on 4 tracks that narrowly avoid each other when their paths cross and all the conductors are screaming

* My ducks are not in a row. Some are missing, one's on fire and I'm pretty sure one is a pigeon.

* A reminder that Persephone is the goddess of flowers and also the Queen of Hell, so don't ever think that you have to fit into just one box.

I have far too many insta posts saved about tattooists doing fantastic floral and botanical work - which is what I want on my left arm. Currently I'm torn between fineline blackwork or something more colourful. I think I may need a proper vision board to help me decide. The aim is to get new ink before the end of the year. Then I can start planning for the right arm!

Also we're in the middle of fools spring - 19 or 20 degrees, brilliant sunshine and blue skies for the last week lulled us all into a false sense of security. Today the temps plunged and we had 4 seasons in 30 mins including torrential rain, sleet, and sunshine. Likely frost overnight - at least I don't have any tender plants outside yet.

Annnnd our office move - which was supposed to happen on Friday so I would have had 2 days to unpack before going away - has been postponed until 6 April - slapping in the middle of my holiday. What's the betting I come back on 13 April and my stuff will have disappeared into the ether?

Right - time for a giant pot of coffee, a rug to snuggle under and to fire up the work laptop.
ruric: (Default)
Last week was busy, this week will be too - but we have spring weather here in London, blue skies and that combination plus my current obsession is stopping me spiralling into apathy.

HOME: continuing the slow and steady deep clean and declutter - bathroom done. Next up is the bedroom. Didn't quite tick off all my targets last week but happy with progress.

HEALTH new hair cut was a hit at work - unexpected compliments left, right and centre! Opened up piercings not giving me any issues - definitely going back for helix (helices???) in May or June. Titanium jewellery the way to go. Planning new tattoos too. Sleep patterns normalising as I'm trying to put in the effort to get a solid 6-7 hours a night. Arthritic knees feeling OK. Rejoined the gym at the weekend - now just need to figure out how to fit sessions into my days. Need to find my Fitbit.

LIFE ADMIN: pretty much up to date - need to sort out green waste fees for the cottage, review council tax bills for cottage and London and apply for a postal vote. Sorting pensions on back burner until decluttering done - which should reveal where I stashed all the paperwork!

DIGITAL DECLUTTER: email still around 11,000, not managed to reduce it - in fact I looked away from it last week and by the weekend had 2000 unread. Ugh. Staying on top of transferring To Keep items from tablet to dropbox, have started reviewing and decanting images from phone because it is FULL.

GARDENING/ALLOTMENTING: barrowed 30 bags of compost from delivery site fown to my plot on Friday. Community day at the plots on Saturday, which was lovely, and then Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon I started prepping my plot. I have a plan to tackle it in 1-2 hour blocks to avoid overwhelm.

COOKING/EATING: fewer takeaways last week and stocked up on healthy food at the weekend - so no excuse for bad habits. Getting back into overnight oats for breakfast (great for grab and go mornings) and giant salads for lunch. READING/LISTENING: Finished re-reading Heated Rivalry matching book chapters to rewatch episodes. May be diving back into a reread of the other books as I have time off for Easter.

WATCHING: still Heated Rivalry all the way. I think I've fully reheated 5 times but also watched various eps as standalone so ai'm at the point where I've lost count and no longer care. I'm all up in the fanvids too - I'd forgotten how much I enjoy them! Picking up some shorter fan edits too (mostly from tumblr and insta I think). May have to do a short term subscription to YouTube premium over Easter so I can legally download my faves. This fandom is also very generous - people are sharing Google doc fic links which are truly epic and so much other material. Unfortunately reading between the lines the fandom has evolved as fast as the show which means certain of the less great things are surfacing - homophobia, racism and in some places exclusion of queer audiences which WTAF way to miss the point. I want all the nice things do not piss off the show runner, creatives or actors. Luckily my lists are curated so I only tend to see this alluded to and not the actual posts. And it sounds like many of the people involved have stepped back from social media engagement - which, good for them!

CREATING/LEARNING: still have crochet projects underway - we did new things at crochet club on Friday so no progress on existing projects - spring wreath, Halloween blanket, granny square blanket, hexicardi, granny square bags x 2. Might get one or two done by the end of the month.

CATS: all good. They're both being super affectionate at the moment. Cuddles all the time.

VOLUNTEERING: community day at the plots was good with another one planned for 19 April. Our community plot - where we host parties and the plant sale - is looking good.

SOCIALISING: busier than usual last week! Post work drinks with a few colleagues on Thursday - just for an hour - which was both nice and enough. Hung around a bit on Friday afternoon with allotment people during compost distribution. Same on Saturday as we had a pizza lunch after working. And a few calls with [personal profile] ravurian.

WORK: first round of inspections almost done - hope to finish this week. Need to do the ton of admin it generates and deal with end of year close down. Reprofiled my parts of the capital budget. Have mostly packed everything for the office move at the end of the week.

Today I'm working from home - likely in the office Tuesday through Thursday and probably Friday morning, then working Saturday 11 to 2pm. Aiming to try and add in some gym and allotment time to this week too.

Apparently having been supremely indifferent to men's fashion for my entire life I now have a burning interest in it?

I may have been glued to Threads for a while watching the pictures come through from the Oscars and pre- post- parties on Sunday and into the wee small hours of Monday morning.

I'm blaming these fools...

Click to embiggen.

There's also a hilarious video that goes with pic 2 on JR's instagram - last slide in that post - which makes me snort/giggle every time I watch it because of the awkwardness of it all.

I would like to flop tonight but I need to tick off some tasks from my endless "Do ALL The Things" list for sorting out my flat/life. Alas it is already 9:15pm. Wonder how much I can achieve in an hour/90 minutes?

What can I possibly bribe myself with as a reward if I'm a good girl and get shit done?

I had a whole weekend at home - for the first time in 4 weeks! Remind me never to organise/volunteer for things that mean I have to work 3 Saturday's on the trot because that is exhausting. On the plus side I have a chunk of flexi leave to take.

So quick summary:

HOME: deep cleaned kitchen and sorted out a bunch for a recycling and tip run today. Next week it's deep cleaning the bathroom, and chipping away at the chaos and decluttering/#orjenising in the bedroom and living room. I have detailed bullet point lists and daily/weekly targets!

HEALTH still a bit FUBAR'd but improving. Finally took myself off to Toni and Guy's on Friday where a very firm hairdresser chopped off a significant amount of my hair. It had almost reached my waist and had way too many split ends. I got a free treatment (whatever product they used smelled awesome and made my hair super silky) and I now have a really simple cut - still long enough that I can put it up when gardening /at the gym, but short enough to wash and go and no danger of overnight knots. Today I got my piercings back - found a great piercer locally and I was just going to get single studs in each ear but happily we discovered 5 of my old piercings were still open! She popped new studs in those - because I have no idea where my old studs are - only the tons of dangley earrings on the board in my bedroom. She redid the middle piercing on my left ear and now I have all the shiny jewellery back. Once the current ones have settled down I'm going back to get my helix piercing redone - might get one each side.

LIFE ADMIN: still planning to move from Gmail once I've decluttered it. Applied for a postal vote as I'll be working local election day (7 May) as a poll clerk in Richmond so won't be around to vote locally. Have to make time to complete training for that and it will be a long day (5am to midnight including travel to/from) polling station.

DIGITAL DECLUTTER: have kept email at mail at 11,000 but not managed to reduce it; staying on top of transferring To Keep items from tablet to dropbox, my phone images storage is a mess.

GARDENING/ALLOTMENTING: nope - too cold and/or wet and lacked motivation.

COOKING/EATING: reboarded the takeaway train over the last week - there just seemed to be no time at all, long work days!

READING/LISTENING: LOL. Thank you Rachel Reid - read Game Changers, Heated Rivalry, Tough Guy, Common Goal, Role Model and The Long Game and now re-reading Heated Rivalry matching book chapters to rewatch episodes. What do you mean obsessed?

WATCHING: Heated Rivalry - 4th rewatch. Everything else is having to fit around that!

CREATING/LEARNING: several, projects on the go/nearing completion - spring wreath, Halloween blanket, granny square blanket, hexicardi, granny square bags x 2. Might get one or two done by the end of the month.

CATS: all good.

VOLUNTEERING: one new task to complete as of meeting last week.

SOCIALISING: a 3 hour call with [personal profile] gingerpig consisting of two hours of Heated Rivalry squee and one of catching up. A formal "WiLlYoUCoMeToMyCotTageThisEAsTer" invitation extended to [personal profile] ravurian - because, thanks to Show, I'm never going to be able to invite anyone to the cottage unless I adopt concussed-and-ever-so-slightly-high Shane's rhythm of speech.

WORK: much improvement - BRAG quarterly meeting went well, the Seed Swap was a success, the three consecutive Saturday's of work are over until 28 March which is my next weekend day of work. I've started the current round of inspections which is generating a ton of admin (which is this coming week's issue), I need to carve out some time to dealing with financial year end (how is it almost the end of March?!!!) and reprofile the capital budget.

It's going to be a long work week - think I'm going to work from home tomorrow as I should be able to plough through a chunk of admin uninterrupted. Tuesday through Friday lunchtime will be office days and site visits. Then I've got 30 bags of compost to shift from a site wide delivery down to my plot on Friday afternoon - say a prayer for my knees and back! Keeping my fingers crossed for sunshine and blue skies next week.

LOL I am all up in everything HR so much so that it's not even funny. :o)

So the last time I posted I was 5 days in, had watched it once, bought the books and was just about to start a second rewatch - that was last Saturday.

I read all 6 books in 2.5 days, completed a second rewatch, randomly watched eps 3-6 across 4 nights (because why not?) and then decided it would be fun to match reading the relevant chapters of HR and then watch the relevant episodes. I got as far as ep 3 and then got distracted by more cast interviews and HR insta and threads.

Yeserday I disappeared down the YouTube rabbit hole of fan vids - so now I have 193 open tabs across 2 browser windows, there's music playing, I have no idea where it's coming from and I'm in the middle of curating playlists on my YouTube. I need to remember how to DL from YouTube because I want a good chunk of those vids accessible to me at all times and never worry about them being pulled.

I may be curating playlists on Spotify for my gym workouts because HR bvidders use great music for their vids. And...um...I have a bunch of meta posts bookmarked to go back and read properly after the current rewatch.

Still noticing new things - all the subtle little whispered remarks that weren't obvious on first or second viewing. I need to see the whole series on a screen bigger than my tablet.

I'm catching up on the cast interviews which I'm finding delightful and astonishing. I mean the 3 minute social media sound bites, wild humour and meeting fans where they live was an absolute gift - but the long form interviews with their openness, vulnerability and in depth discussions are just blowing my mind.

Still steering clear of fanfic - because there are only 24 hours in a day - and I'm not sure I have time for an "Inception" level fandom event in my life - though I suspect I'm fighting a failed rearguard action there. Inception inhabited my brain for 2.5 years and with S2 of Heated Rivalry not airing until '27 and (please god) a potential further season - it's quite possible I'll be fully consumed by this until 2028.

Around all of that it's been super busy at work and I've been making a bunch of appointments/ running errands which come under the heading of "Get Your Shit Together" but for the first time in months I feel like I'm fully firing on all cylinders.

Not sure how much of that is down to the Little Canadian Hockey Romance That Could or whether it's due to the fact that we've had more than a few days of sunshine, warmth and blue skies (and not the dreary grey, wet and miserable days we've had since before Christmas) - whatever! I'm running with it.

Arriving suitably late to the Heated Rivalry party.

I did try to get into it last year- my brain was not braining in the right direction to make that feasible. I suspect a lot of that might have been due to the uncertainty of whether a second season would be happening and I didn't want to get invested in something only to have it brutally yanked away. (I'm still furious that My Lady Jane didn't get a S2).

I had a day off on Tuesday, spent the afternoon noodling around online as I figured if I couldn't get into the show I would at least enjoy the unhinged glory of watching soundbites of the cast interviews and reading and bunch of articles. (Yes I'm aware of Ember and Ice, and yes I will be listening to that too).

One thing led to another and I started watching Heated Rivalry at 7pm thinking I'd do an episode a day.

UM.

By 1am Wednesday I'd watched all the eps, bought the books and was whatsapping ([personal profile] ravurian and [personal profile] gingerpig) tragic messages along the lines of "yes I'm 4 months late, talk to me about HR".

I was also patting myself on the back for having the foresight to 'add to memory' a lot of the DW posts that had been on my circle over the last 4 months clarifying the timeline (thank you [personal profile] mific) and making videos and fic recs.

First rewatch completed today and fully expect to complete another by the end of the weekend or I might dive in to the EmptyNetters reactions which I gather are highly recommended.

All of which is a longwinded way of saying I am down for talking about the show, the delightfully unhinged cast interviews (a gift that keeps on giving), the soundtrack, the books (I'll be finishing Game Changers this weekend), and anything related to the upcoming S2 which I am led to believe starts shooting this summer.

So much for doing a weekly round up! Whoops.

HOME: life got busy and my decluttering/#orjenising stalled.

HEALTH my sleep patterns are still FUBAR'd but otherwise good.

LIFE ADMIN: looking at European alternatives to Gmail and Dropbox - eyeing up Proton.

COOKING/EATING: a few too many coffee shop lunches but resisting the lure of takeaways.

READING/LISTENING: not the last few weeks.

WATCHING: Still not caught up on Stranger Things and have only managed one episode of Heated Rivalry. Keeping up with returning shows and trying to avoid picking up new ones! Did bing Marple and Miss Marple in Wales.

CREATING/LEARNING: dealing with sewing in ends on Halloween blanket then need to block it and the granny square blanket. Hecicardi 75% finished but need to frog a bit and redo. While in Wales did 24 granny squares for small project bags and 13 for large bag. Just need to decide if I want more to make bags larger. Have plenty of wool - then must stitch together, line and finish.

CATS: all good.

VOLUNTEERING: still have one outstanding task.

SOCIALISING: nope - not even phone calls. Proper hermitting other than crochet club and class.

WORK: a bit meh for the last few weeks and have unfortunately scheduled 3 consecutive weeks of weekend working.

Plan for this coming week - work long office days Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, TOIL Wednesday, off Friday and Sunday, working Saturday.

I realise it's only mid month but February has been a MONTH.

The Oh Noes cut for those who'd rather avoid them- not personal ones cos I'm OK )

7. It has been grey and wet here in London for ever - at least from the start of the year with maybe 2 days of blue skies and sunshine and it's taking a toll.

8. Went to Wales last week and only took one of the two cats. The other hid and so stayed home with a pile of food. Athena - the usually quiet reserved cat - came with me and we had some bonding time without her sister getting in the way. Artemis, the little fiend who stayed home, has been making up for the fact that she was cruelly abandoned - in a warm flat with plenty of food and water and oodles of toys - ever since!

9. Relatedly having spent the week in the cosy, tidy cottage I'm even more determined to subdue and sort out the utter chaos of my living situation in London where I have tried to effectively cram the. Contents of a 3 bed house into what is essentially a two room flat.

10. I've not been able to get to the allotment or do any gardening because WET. Not amused.

The Hell Yes's

1. I spent last week working remotely from the cottage which also included a lot of naps, TV, good food and a ridiculous amount of crocheting. And though it took me 2 days to get the cottage warm - it was Wales and the mountains looked fancy with a good dusting of snow. I beached myself on the couch and barely moved from Monday to Saturday (it was grey, wet and cold there too). Of course coming home on Saturday the weather did change and for a few precious hours there were blue skies and sunshine.

2. I gave myself a pass this week and lived on ready meals while trying to bring some order to 3 work related email inboxes and 2 personal ones. I'm getting there.

3. Work has at least been productive if not enjoyable. But tomorrow I'm going to a Park colleague's community planting day for a couple of hours, next week I'm spending a day handing out free trees and the week after we are having our borough wide seed swap - all of which should be fun things.

4. Crocheting has been super productive - at the beginning of the month I finished a blanket I started the week before Xmas, I've got about half a hexi cardigan finished (even though I have to frog some back), I've almost finished the granny squares for two project bags (just need to stitch them together, line them and make handles), and I'm just over halfway through some Wednesday evening classes to crochet an Easter/Spring wreath. Crochet club every Friday from 1 to 2:30pm is the non-negotiable in my diary. Time to be creative, learn new stuff, have a chat and hang out with 5-7 other fun women.

5. The ex is at the cottage this week which means I get to use his washing machine tomorrow before and after work (2-3 loads of washing) and do some more if needed early Saturday morning.

6. On that note I'm taking myself off to bed with a giant mug of Horlicks and a couple of eps of Starfleet Academy!
