Smithing is an artisan skill through which players smelt ores into metal bars, and forge these bars - and other materials - into various items. Both smelting ores and forging items give Smithing experience. Many smithable items are useful for combat, quests, and training other skills like Crafting and Fletching. It is the companion skill to Mining which ores are typically gathered through for smelting.
Players can bring ores and forging resources in their inventory for smelting and forging. However, players are encouraged to instead use the metal bank to store ores, metal bars and molten glasses (but cannot store other materials) and use them conveniently. Do note that the metal bank accepts deposits that are noted - allowing for larger quantities to be stored conveniently - as well as from an ore box.
Smelting bars

Ores can be smelted into metal bars at a furnace (not to be confused with a forge). Interacting with a furnace opens the Smelting interface. The interface displays the amount of resources (ores, casting metals and glass, metal bars etc.) currently stored in the metal bank.
Players can select the type of bar they wish to create by either clicking on the bar's corresponding ore (under Core Ores) or the bar itself (under Ore Smelting). The player's selection will be reflected on the rightmost side of the interface, covering the requirements as well as the materials involved. Additionally, players can control quantity, with limits dependent on current inventory space (0–28) or the equipping of smelting gauntlets (up to 60 via Make-X, and all bars will be automatically deposited into the metal bank). Without smelting gauntlets, newly smelted metal bars will be stored in the player's backpack. If the gauntlets are owned, blacksmith's gloves (from the blacksmith's outfit) may be worn instead and will provide the same benefit as the gauntlets.
Generally, metal bars are smelted from two different ores, exceptions being iron, silver, gold, bane, elder rune, primal, and platinum (see below). Compared to forging items, smelting ores rewards relatively small Smithing experience.

In addition to smelting bars from ores, certain bars can be created by smelting other bars such as those involved in masterwork smithing and Necromancy. Corrupted ore can also be smelted, but doesn't produce any items as a product.
Smelting speed
editAt a given bar's base level requirement, smelting takes 5 ticks (3 seconds). At specific Smithing levels unique to each bar type for core metals, the time is reduced first to 4 ticks (2.4 seconds) and then further to 3 ticks (1.8 seconds) according to the following table.
Members who have access to the Superheat Form prayer can activate it to further reduce the duration by 1 tick (0.6 seconds).

Double bar chance
editAt specific Smithing levels unique to each bar type, players unlock a 10% chance of smelting an extra bar for it. Extra bars do not grant additional Smithing experience, and will be automatically deposited to the player's metal bank. When this occurs, the message You manage to make 1 extra bar! It has been sent to your metal bank. appears in the chatbox and also as a popup message. When smelting primal bars, which are made in batches of five, the message will instead be: You manage to make 5 extra bars! They've been sent to your metal bank..
Players who have access to the following can further increase their chances:
- Modified blacksmith's helmet: +1%[1]
- Varrock armour: Increased chance of smelting double bars for all core metals (except primal bars), with increase varying by bar smelted. Completing the New Varrock easy achievements allows the player to enjoy the armour's benefits without having it equipped.

Forging items

In Smithing, items (in some cases degrading) are forged at an anvil with a hammer (typically stored in the tool belt). Most of the process will be spent here, with zero to either one or more quick trips to a forge to help speed things. Interacting with either an anvil or a forge opens the Smithing Interface. Selecting a material (on the leftmost side) displays its corresponding forging options (listed in the middle). Begin Project creates an unfinished smithing item in your inventory. If done at an anvil, the forging process begins automatically; if done at a forge, the message Your unfinished item is at full heat: [Item]. Use the anvil. will appear, encouraging the player to proceed to an anvil.
During the forging process, a progress meter (blue; starts at 0%) and stored heat meter (yellow; % dependent on Smithing level and metal type) appears above the player. To completely forge an item, the progress meter has to be filled to 100%.
Heat
editHeat determines progress speed; more heat, faster progress. Every strike (2 game ticks) fills the progress meter (left to right) while depleting 10 heat from the meter (right to left). For optimal forging, be sure to maintain desired heat levels by reheating the item at a forge.

The percent heat at which a progress multiplier transition occurs, e.g. High to Medium heat, is split into thirds of the unbonused heat. Past certain levels for each bar, +50 and +100 heat bonuses are applied on top of the base heat percentages. For example, with level 100 Smithing and 100 Firemaking, the maximum heat is 900, meaning that you would transition to medium heat at 600 out of 900, or 66%. If the +100 heat bonus is unlocked, you would still transition to medium heat at 600, but it would be out of 1000, or 60%. Refilling from 0-100% heat takes 6 ticks. For each type of bar, this decreases to 4 ticks and then 2 ticks, at certain Smithing level milestones. Players can also cast the Superheat Item spell on the unfinished smithing item to reheat it by 33% in 2 ticks without interrupting their smithing progress.
The maximum heat value in an item is dependent on a player's Smithing level as well as their Firemaking level. Temporary skill boosts which cause a visible increase in the player's Firemaking level are accounted for in the calculation of heat.
There are also material bonuses, which raise the player's maximum heat value and vary based on the player's Smithing level and the material they are working with. The bars in the table below can either be worked on with no bonus, +50 heat, or +100 heat. The exception being bronze which can only receive a bonus of +50 heat. The level needed for a certain bonus can also be met by boosting the player's Smithing level if they do not meet the requirement; examples of boosting the player's Smithing level are found lower on this page. Once the player's Smithing level falls below the required level for the bonus, the maximum heat will lower, even if the player is working on an unfinished smithing item at the time.
The smithing auto-heater can be used to help maintain low levels of heat; as it automatically refills 30% of a player's maximum heat every that time that heat is depleted. This uses five coal per refill, which is taken from the player's inventory or ore box. Superheat Form can be used in conjunction with this to maintain medium heat.
Players who have access to the Artisans' Workshop can utilise the effects of luminite injectors (+1 progress/hammer strike) while strictly inside the workshop.
Generally, duration and experience are multiplied by the amount of bars used in an item's creation; creating two boots (2 x 1 bar) provides the same amount of experience as creating one helm (1 x 2 bar), with minimal differences in duration.
Temporary skill boosts work to start an item. If the boost does not last for the entire time when creating the item, progress will be halved as long as the player's Smithing level is lower than the level required to create the item.
Experience and progress values
editThe bar cost for an item has a direct effect on the total progress that the player is required to make, and the experience that is gained from doing so. While smithing an item the anvil is struck every 2 ticks, and each strike grants progress based on the player's current heat. Upon each strike 10 heat is lost and experience is gained. The amount of experience gained is uniform throughout the process. Once the required amount of progress has been made, the finished item is created.
The maximum boost to progress swings, assuming one is working on elder rune items, can be attained by having:
- Smithing cape's reheat perk (+5 base progress)
- Careless 5 perk (+5 base progress)
- An active luminite injector (+1 base progress)
- 99 Smithing (+1 base progress)
- A high heat value (x2.0 base progress)
- Double progress chance (max of 34.4%):
- Rapid 4 perk (+20%) (+22% from equipment level 20 bonus)
- Tinker 2 perk (+4%) (+4.4% from equipment level 20 bonus)[n 1]
- Perfect juju smithing potion (+5%)
- Upgraded Varrock armour 4 (+2%) (double progress chance on all bar percentages from recent armour levels)
- Crystal hammer (+1%)
- Powerburst of masterstroke (multiplies smithing progress by 10 for the next 4 hammer swings within 30 seconds)

All experience per hit in the above table is based on 10 progress per hit. The experience per hit is the same for all items if the metal type and upgrade tier is the same. An orikalkum pickaxe +1 and an orikalkum platebody +1 will both give 12.5 experience per hit. The total experience to produce these items remains based on the total bars used.
Due to the variation in progress and experience, some lower level items have higher experience rates. For example, creating a burial necronium item of any type will give more experience per hit and therefore more experience per hour than producing any elder rune +4 item from its +3 counterpart.
Different metals gain +1 base progress per swing at certain levels. These levels are listed in the following table.

Upgrading smithed equipment

Regular items created through Smithing are "base items". Base items can be upgraded a number of times, dependent on the metal tier/type.

Each upgraded item is created from the previous version and a number of bars. The number of bars required is dependent on the type of item being upgraded. An upgraded item's tier is increased by 1, and the repair costs (when applicable) will increase proportional to the number of bars, but the levels required to use the item remain the same. To upgrade an item, bring the previous version to a forge (along with the needed bars in then inventory or metal bank). Click the forge to bring up the smithing interface and select the metal and item being upgraded. At the top of the item information panel on the right, select the appropriate upgrade tier. For a base item, such as an adamant full helm, "+1" should be selected. For a "+1" item, instead select "+2", and so on. Then start smithing by clicking "Begin Project".
Starting an upgraded item on an anvil will attempt to rework the item at 0% heat. Before reaching the level required to create items of a given metal at full heat (see table above), a forge should be used to start and heat the item before using it on an anvil.
A final upgrade tier, called "Burial", is described in the next section.

Creating burial equipment
editAt level 40 Smithing, players will unlock the ability to create burial equipment at the Artisans' Workshop using adamant equipment or above. Once a piece of smithed equipment is fully upgraded to its highest tier, it can be heated and reworked at a burial anvil into burial equipment. This destroys the equipment whilst using no extra materials and providing the same experience as upgrading the item to the highest tier.
Armour can also be made into a complete set by selecting burial armour in the Smithing interface of the anvil, providing the cumulative experience of creating each item individually. To create a burial set, the upgraded full helm, platebody, platelegs, gauntlets, and armoured boots must be in the inventory.
Masterwork armour
editWith level 99 Smithing and having made Elder Rune Armour—Full Helm +5, Platebody +5, Platelegs +5, Gauntlets +5, Armoured Boots +5—players can create tier 90 degradable power armour called masterwork armour. The process of creating the armour is complicated and time consuming, and gives only token experience as it is not intended to be a training method for the skill. Masterwork armour can only be made after completing the achievement It Should Have Been Called Aetherium - making a full set of elder rune equipment + 5. Upgrading all single pieces from +4 to +5 will unlock this achievement. The achievement is a requirement for the completionist cape.
- Combine one of each regular bar to smelt concentrated alloy bars.
- Combine five concentrated alloy bars to create enriched alloy bars.
- Ten enriched alloy bars can be combined to create immaculate alloy bars.
- Immaculate alloy bars are then folded 1,000 times on an anvil to produce glorious bars.
- Glorious bars can be smithed to produce masterwork plates.
- The masterwork plates are then smithed into curved masterwork plates.
- Curved masterwork melee plates are then smithed into untempered masterwork armour pieces.
- Untempered masterwork melee armour pieces are then smithed into masterwork armour pieces.
- Masterwork melee armour pieces can be combined with leather to create lined masterwork armour pieces.
- Lined masterwork melee armour pieces are combined to create unfinished masterwork armour pieces such as unfinished masterwork boots, unfinished masterwork gloves, etc.
- Masterwork rivets, made from steel bars, are then added to unfinished masterwork armour pieces to create riveted versions such as unfinished riveted masterwork boots.
- Finally, the unfinished riveted masterwork armour pieces, such as the unfinished riveted masterwork boots, can be smithed into completed masterwork armour pieces, for example masterwork boots.
Masterwork armour can be upgraded to tier 92 trimmed masterwork equipment, which can further be augmented and/or custom-fitted. This is done by adding masterwork armour trim; which is created from elder rune bars and the components obtained from melting down Torva armour and malevolent armour pieces. Trimming is quicker than creating masterwork armour, but still requires level 99 Smithing as well as the completion of the quest While Guthix Sleeps.
Armour spikes
editAt level 90 Smithing players can create armour spikes from elder rune bars. Armour spikes are consumable items that can be stored in the ammo slot or inventory. Each time that the player is attacked by an enemy on an adjacent square, damage is dealt. The amount of damage dealt is dependent on the player's Smithing level.
Beneficial equipment
editThe following items provide additional experience or other beneficial effects when smelting bars or smithing equipment.
Smelting
edit- Ring of forging: reduces the number of iron ores needed to make a bar from 2 to 1
- Modified blacksmith's helmet: +1% double bar chance when smelting
- Superheat Form: reduces the time it takes to smelt a bar by one tick
- Smelting gauntlets: smelted bars are automatically deposited into the metal bank; up to 60 bars can be smelted at a time in the Make-X interface instead of 28
Smithing
edit- Perfect juju smithing potion: +5% chance of double progress when smithing
- Powerburst of masterstroke: For the next 4 hammer swings, your smithing progress is multiplied by 10.
- Crystal hammer: +1% chance for double progress when smithing any core metal
- Smithing cape perk: whenever reheating an unfinished smithing item, the next strike generates +5 base progress
- Scroll of efficiency: Upon finishing smithing an item, there is 2% chance for every bar required to make the item of that bar being refunded
- Smithing auto-heater: Consumes 5 coal to automatically replenish 30% heat to an unfinished smithing item
- Advanced smithing auto-heater: Consumes 50 coal to automatically replenish 60% heat to an unfinished smithing item.
- Superheat Form: Increased progress multipliers at low and medium heat thresholds
- Orthen furnace core: The Superheat Form curse uses no prayer points. The scroll of efficiency effect has a 25% increased chance to occur. If the Breakdown perk activates the player gains the Furnace Core buff which grants 5% increased experience for 5 minutes.
Both
edit- Smithing urns fill up as the player smelts bars or smiths items; they can then be teleported away to receive additional experience.
- Blacksmith's outfit: up to 6% additional Smithing experience, dependent on the number of outfit pieces equipped (5 pieces at 1% each plus a 1% bonus for wearing the entire set)
- Brawling gloves (Smithing): 50% extra experience (75% with Infernal Puzzle Box at tier 4)
- Varrock armour: increased chance of smelting double bars; chance of a strike granting double progress when smithing. With the New Varrock easy achievements completed, it is no longer required to wear Varrock armour to receive its mining, smithing, or smelting benefits.
- Rapid: 5% per rank (20% at rank 4) chance to double progress while smithing, but heat is lost twice as fast
- Tinker: 2% per rank chance (8% at rank 4) to make double progress while smithing
- Breakdown: 0.8% chance per rank (4.8% at rank 6) while smithing of obtaining the same components that would be gained if the item were disassembled, whilst keeping the item
- Fortune: 0.1% chance per rank (0.3% at rank 3) to duplicate a completed item, sending it to the bank/metal bank; this applies while smelting and smithing
- Careless: 10% per rank (50% at rank 5) increased base progress per strike while smithing, but reduces heat by an additional 10% per rank (50% at rank 5)
Blast Furnace
editThe Blast Furnace is a minigame located in Keldagrim that closely involves the Smithing skill. Players operate a large furnace with which to smelt ores. Its benefit is the ability to smelt bars from iron to rune without using secondary ores such as coal or luminite.
Artisans' Workshop
editThe Artisans' Workshop acts as a social hub and guild for the Smithing skill. It contains conveniently located anvils and forges for Smithing training and can benefit from luminite injectors which grant additional smithing progress per swing to every player smithing in the Workshop. The eastern part of the building forms the guild, which has a level 40 Smithing requirement to access. It contains a bank chest as well as burial anvils that can be used to make burial equipment. Making a burial version of an item consumes a maximally upgraded item and produces experience only. Upon completion of the Smithing operation, the item is automatically removed from the inventory. This makes the process a high experience but expensive method of training. The best use of this is to create burial armour sets; this is often considered the best Smithing training method available for experience (and therefore is often chosen as a relatively fast method to earn respect in the Workshop).
Smithing at the Workshop earns respect, but smelting (including corrupted ore) does not allow for any earning of respect.
Other uses of Smithing

Cape of Accomplishment

Upon reaching 99 Smithing, players may buy the Smithing Cape of Accomplishment from Thurgo in his house near Mudskipper Point for 99,000 coins.
Smithing is currently ranked #17 out of 26 among skills in which players have level 99. This makes it somewhat rare, possibly due to the large investment of time and/or money required to train the skill.

Temporary boosts
editIf the players boost to smith items from a lower level, they only need to apply the boost initially to make the unfinished smithing item. Once made, the unfinished item can be completed at half speed without any experiences gained if the Smithing level is not reached.

Trivia
edit- In the early days, Smithing was considered one of the best skills for making money. As such, Jagex deliberately kept anvils and furnaces far away from each other in an attempt to prevent people from levelling Smithing too quickly.
- During the January 2011 RuneFest meet, Mod Mark stated that the long-awaited Smithing skill revamp had not been started and most probably would not start development for quite some time due to the busy schedules of the development team. Smithing did have a large update on 8 March 2011, but it was not the expected revamp. An update was started in 2016 but was delayed until 2017 to account for some new designs and player feedback. It was pushed back even further but was eventually released on 7 January 2019.
- The current minimum requirement to be ranked (at approximately rank 1,241,595) on the HiScores for Smithing is level 15. As of 30 April 2026, there are 245,238 active players that have achieved level 99 in Smithing. There are 31,164 active players that have achieved level 120 in Smithing.
