Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Spoilers

Because I've gotten a few questions about the ending of Pirates, and especially in response to this, a fairly detailed description of the ending of AWE, as best I can remember it.

Two fact are established earlier in the movie that become extremely important in the ending.

1) Davy Jones was tasked by the goddess Calypso to fairy the souls of those who die at see to the land of the dead. It's because he has turned away from this duty that he and his crew have turned into monsters.

2) The Duchman must always have a captain. Anyone who stabs the heart must then cut out their own heart to replace it.

Also, in case anyone was wondering, at some point between this and the last movie Beckett made Jones kill the Kracken, hence the reason it doesn't appear (alive).

It's also established that the first Pirate Court sealed Calypso (who was the woman Jones loved) into human form (Tia Dalma). Jones told them how because he believed Calypso had betrayed him. She does not know he did this.

At one point Jones goes to see Tia Dalma and she tells him that once she's freed she intends to kill the Court in vengeance for imprisoning her in the first place.

Barbossa and the others don't know this and try to pursued the court to release her, though most of them don't want to. Meanwhile the East India Trading Company has found them (thanks to Jake sending Will to them) and the court can't decide what to do. Jack, wanting a shot at Davy Jones, tricks the court into making Elizabeth the Pirate King. She orders them to fight.

They head out and find a massive armada, far to powerful for them to defeat. After a slightly humorous 'prisoner exchange' Jake is taken prisoner on the Duchman and Will is returned. Barbossa frees Calypso, thinking she'll help them. Before she can do anything to the pirates Will reveals that it was Jones who betrayed her. She angrily disappears into the sea, where a huge Maelstrom forms. After Elizabeth gives a rousing speech to the pirates the Pearl sails into the whirlpool and so does the Duchman.

*insert a lot of hard to describe action here*

On the Pearl, in the middle of a battle, Will and Elizabeth have Barbossa marry them.

On the Duchman, Jack escapes, steals the chest, and has a climatic battle with Jones, him trying to get the key and Jones trying to get the chest back.

Eventually, while Jones is distracted with Will and Elizabeth (who've gone over to the Duchman) Jack gets both, takes out the heart and threatens to kill Jones but hesitates.

Meanwhile, Jones realizing Will and Elizabeth are in love, fatally stabs Will in front of Elizabeth. He appears to die.

Suddenly you see a blade stab through the heart, which is now lying on the deck. Jack has put a knife in Will's hand and used it to kill Jones.

Jones dies and falls overboard, into the whirlpool, which begins to dissipate. Jack grabs Elizabeth (who doesn't want to leave Will) and escapes the now sinking Duchman as the crew converge on will with a knife and the chest, chanting that the ship must always have a captain.

As the Duchman goes under the Pearl crew realizes there's still an armada of ships waiting for them.

Suddenly the Duchman reappears, with Will (now sporting a huge scar across his chest) at the Helm and the crew now human again.

Beckett, who does not know the Duchman is no longer under his control, sails his ship between the Pearl and Duchman. Both open fire. His ship goes down and the armada retreats.

Will tells Bootstrap he's free, but Bootstrap wants to stay with Will. Bootstrap also tells Will that Elizabeth cannot sail with the Duchman.

Will and Elizabeth go ashore. It's implied that they have sex and then Will has to go. Before doing so he leave the chest (now containing his heart) in Elizabeth's care, saying it's always belonged her anyway.

Then there's a funny scene where Jack is taking Giselle and Scarlett to see the Pearl, only to discover it's been stolen by Barbossa, who plans to search for the Fountain of Youth. Except Jack has stolen the map and heads out himself.

The credits role and then we see Elizabeth and her 10 year old son going to meet Will as he returns.
