I'm fucking perceptive sometimes, but it's never at the right moments. If I really knew this then, if I really internalized it then I wouldn't be where I am right now.

"Why stop loving? This world is full of hate enough as it is. We could spend our lives trying to define ourselves in opposition to one another, to stand at ends, to antagonize each other and say, "THIS IS WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT."

Most people I know seem to want to define themselves this way. They want to know what makes them special. They stand away, they set themselves apart. By constantly striving to define ourselves in opposition to one another, we gradually lose the ability to relate to each other. The less we can relate to each other, the less we can love each other. Soon we will only be able to love ourselves, and we will only love people who make us love ourselves more - people who validate our experiences, people who agree with us, people who supposedly understand us. We won't seek to challenge what we know, what we take for granted. We won't want to, because it'll challenge us and our unique individuality, it'll challenge the very line that gets drawn between Me and You."

From overheardinnewyork.com:

Gangsta teen: Yeah, A Clockwork Orange. You seen that shit? They taped his eyes open and made him watch rapes and shit. I would have ripped that shit off my eyes, man -- fuck that. I'd blink my motherfucking eyes regardless.

Fitzwilliam is sitting on my chest. It makes it very difficult to see the computer screen. But it's also kind of cute. And very, very warm.

I can't stand it when people get exasperated with you when you ask them to explain their opinions or beliefs on a particular topic. If you feel so strongly about a particular issue, then it's all the more reason for you to have an absolutely soundproof argument to defend it, right? You wouldn't want to defend something that isn't, in your mind, 100% reasonable. At least I wouldn't.

I also can't stand it when people get so wrapped up in academia, surrounding themselves with their "intellectual friends" and arrogant jargon, so they can hide behind the fact that what they actually belief in either a) doesn't make any sense, or b) has no practical application to anybody or anything except their inflated egos.

This is why I do not want to become a professor. Knowledge ought to be accessible to everybody, and not just to the privileged few who can afford a fancy education or to those whose minds easily adapt to the absurd rules of academic conduct.

People always should be asked to explain themselves.

I just watched Grizzly Man.

It was an interesting movie to watch, because Timothy Treadwell is such a bizarre individual. His behavior with animals is appalling, and it's a miracle to me that he lived for as long as he did among such potentially dangerous creatures and with such blatant disrespect of nature. I suppose there are characteristics of him that are, in a way, admirable. His love for the animals and his resolve to protect them are undeniable. The way in which he did this, of course, was absolutely questionable.

As somebody who has long loved and worked with animals, it's just strange to me to hear of a person who is so obviously misguided in his sense of the division between humans and animals. But I like the way the film was done because it gives you a sense of how his life growing up may have influenced the way he ultimately turned out.

Anyway. If you haven't seen it, you should.

Things have certainly changed in an unexpected way.

///

On the way to Trader Joe's, Tanya and I got caught in the most ridiculous thunderstorm. At one point while I was driving, it was raining so hard that I could literally not see anything in front of me - I had to drive at about 5 miles an hour with my hazards on. When we got to Trader Joe's, it was still raining so hard that we had to sit in my car for another ten minutes. There was lightning and thunder and all the lights went out at one point and the trees were practically sideways. Totally, totally crazy. I've never seen anything like it. Microburst weather, man.

Then we finally gave up and made a run for it and in the ten seconds we were outside got soaked. It wasn't even raining as hard as it had been.

We bought a lot of tasty things at Trader Joe's, though. I've never been there before. I'm glad we did, even if we had to be out in that awful weather.

The new Harry Potter movie is great. I was quite impressed - it's probably my favorite of all the movies, due to the fact that the special effects were great AND the movie was fucking hilarious. I'm glad that they were able to turn such a serious movie into a comedy as well.

I'm so excited for the book.

My parents came to visit yesterday. It was pretty awesome. They bought me these sweet speakers for my birthday, so BIG PARTY at the beginning of this coming year. It'll be a "sea horse party". Sea horse, sea hell. (If you don't get it, you're LAME!)

It is 9:30 and I have not done anything remotely interesting tonight. In a way I am glad, as I did spend three hours this morning talking and four hours in the car (and some of those four hours in unreasonable amounts of traffic).

Anyway my stomach hurts.

I do wish I had a TV during times like these. It would be nice (?) to mindlessly tune out to some frustrating MTV shows. Alas, I have only YouTube. And various food blogs to check repeatedly for updates. And Facebook to tinker around with.

My life is very exciting, when it comes down to it.

Last night was amazing - we had a giant barbecue with tons of food and lots of beer and it was a lot of fun.

Fitzy is also amazing - he sleeps on my head at night and is generally very cute and wonderful.

I also had a good lesson on Tecca today.

So... yeah. I'm sorry my entries are so boring, but things have been going so well that it's hard to come up with things to talk about.
