Rock 'n Roll Re-Run

So, in a repeat of last Monday, we decided to go back to the Wilshire Royale. It was similar to the previous Monday although maybe there were more people lounging by the pool. On Mondays they have free live music under the slightly misleading name "Eastside Mondays".
The music was, again, what Morten has described as "Urban Void." The drinks are fairly reasonably priced and the bar is pretty spacious and comfortable. Soft lighting, loud bands, a TV room with plaster gazelle heads, a pool room and various nooks, usually with a TV nearby.

Rock n Roll Mondays went to the R Bar in Koreatown. The name doesn't appear on the door in an obvious bid for scenester credibility. You have to give a password to get in. The neighborhood is mostly central American so if you have the golden shield, I'm sure they'll let you in, password or not. Racist or pretentious, you decide.

The layout's pretty nice, lots of privacy and space at the same time. Very dark. Practically empty. The owners honed their skills at the bridge-&-tunnel-catering 4100 but thankfully this one doesn't feel like you're on Shipmates.

The well gin & tonic was six or seven dollars. That's pricey. The jukebox was unexceptional. Radiohead, Doors, Pixies... basically Freshman Dorm Collection '95.

Next we went to Beer Town (next door to Soju Town, if you've forgotten)

The music is always an ecclectic mix of Korean pop. Hip-hop, rock, dance. As you can tell, there's a lot going on. Pretty much the opposite of the R Bar. TVs everywhere, neon lights and everyone smokes constantly.

We got 2000 cc's of Michelob for $12.99. Eventually the smoke alarms went off. The waiter said (shrugging his shoulders in apparent confusion), "Every week!" as if everyone's cigarettes were scentless and invisible.

The alarm went on so long and so much beer was consumed (along with pancakes, boiled peanuts, chips n salsa) that we eventually tuned it out.

It's hard to see, probably, but the fire department responded. Two Korean firefighters disembarked from their truck, geared up with axes and milled about outside before taking off.

Miyako Hideaway

Last night Rock 'n' Roll Mondays went down to Little Tokyo's Miyako Hotel seen here by daylight.

There was a cabinet filled with bottles of booze that belong to patrons, identified by their names.

"Oh yeah? I don't see yer name on it!"

The staff took this picture. Instead of saying, "Say cheese" they made peace symbols.

"Don't bother me, I'm Mondaying"

In honor of National Public Service Week (in Canada) and Evacuation Day (Egypt) I am hereby getting back to providing the service of RNR Monday posts so that interested parties can evacuate their abodes for Sinai-er climes... namely, Johnny's Bar. No, not the pretend Silver Lake bar on Sunset. Some other bar- in Highland Park. If anyone would car to join us, we'll be there around 9:30.

President's Day Rock n Rool

The illustrious Peter Jourdan is concluding his two day stay and the plan is to hold Rock 'n' Roll Monday at the BonaVista Lounge tonight. We'll meet around 9:30.

Explorers

Cambodia Town. Aside from everywhere being named Angkor Insurance or Phnom Market, it would be easy to miss. Architecturally, it looks like Main St. USA 1965. We saw about four restaurants that were open (well, it was Monday and they're still Asians) so we chose one fairly randomly. I don't remember what it was called, it may've just been written in Khmer. The menu was 80% Chinese so I don't really know what Cambodian cuisine is. From what I could tell, fish soup is a local favorite. I could imagine the ambiance being a improved by a crowd (and not having to blow a dead fly off the table before sitting down). They showed music videos- one song I rather liked.
Anyway, after the bill was settled, we went to the Red Room which was very Iowa to me. It was pointed out that Long Beach's nickname is "Iowa By the Sea" and if they'd like to change that perception, playing whiny/naggy "real™ hip-hop" in a bar full of pasty, bundled, studenty types should be identified as a problem area.
Then we went to the Prospector which just sounds gay but apparently isn't. They were watching the Jeffersons and I'll describe it as a basement bar. You know, low pile carpet, no windows, cheap lighting and paneled walls. We only hung out for a bit before heading back.
25 minute drive for those intimidated by great distances. Nice to get out and about, despite the destinations being somewhat underwhelming.

The BaaderMeinhof Wagen has new window switches, tires and rotars and his been hibernating pretty much whilst I rely on Root Beer to get me around town.
Anyway, I'll drive whomever wants to go (provided there's room, which there will be) down to Cambodia Town for Rock 'n' Roll Monday hijinks.
Let's get some grub and then maybe look around for some drinks yins!

Some Cambodian jokes to entice you...

You might be Cambodian if:

-You go to the temple because you think you'll meet good girls there but most of the girls who go there are bad girls who want to prove there family and community they are clean good girls

-Your favorite past time is talking behind the back of people even your own family

-You hate white people even if you are in their country

HAHAHAHAHA! Cambodian humor. Funny in any language, eh? I hope that the food is better, myself.

Anyway, Orion wants us to go to Spaceland afterwards to see a band from Iowa, Deathship.

Some Iowa humor-

You might be Iowan if:

-Vacation means going to Adventureland
-You know where all the Yoders live
-Your idea of a party is throwing cans of WD40 in a campfire while you're drunk.
-You know several people who still refer to Japanese cars as "rice-burners."
-"Seeing the world" means going to Missouri to buy fireworks.
