  6. Fourth Wing (Empyrean 1) by Rebecca Yarros [2]

Rereads in July:

  1. A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine [2]

I continue to enjoy all of Celia Lake's books, and I still adore the Teixcalaan books by Arkady Martine, whether reading or listening to them. Stuart Turton wrote the entirely gripping groundhog-day country house murder mystery, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, and I found The Last Murder at the End of the World another very gripping science-fictional murder mystery, this time in weird post-apocalyptic flavour.

Fourth Wing is a massive fantasy tome (21 hours of audiobook!) about a lethal military college for aspiring dragonriders, which piles a great many tropes onto some rather wonky worldbuilding. It is very entertaining and I can see why it is hugely popular. I am part way through the even more massive sequel and I regret nothing.

  • and did not finish:
    1. The Modern Faerie Tales: Tithe / Valiant / Ironsides by Holly Black

I might come back to the Holly Black books, but I found myself not in the right place for reading about teenagers in a bad life situation making unwise decisions. (I found The Cruel Prince compelling when I read it a couple of years ago, but have struggled to get far through its sequel The Wicked King for similar reasons.) Anyway, given that I chose to put that book aside rather than ran out of time to read it, that means I read all the books I bought this month, woo. I think that's the first time I've managed that since I started monthly tracking.

rmc28: Captain Marvel glowing (light it up)

I admit here that to make a judgement I am slightly cheating where I haven't already read the entire book: I am reading to between 10% and 15% (unless it annoys me too much before then) and judging based on that much, including how much I want to continue. But that seems fairer than not reading at all (except where I know from experience That Won't Help), and I'm rarely wrong about how much I like a book after reading that much of it.

6 Middlegame by Seanan McGuire - did not read

5 Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir - did not get much past chapter 2 before giving in to the Not Actually Liking This, Sorry All My Friends Who Love It

4 The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow - this is definitely holding my attention

3 The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders - this is definitely engaging and I'm loving the worldbuilding

2 The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley - very gripping, but also very violent, gory, lots of general bodily function unpleasantness; however, I had to make myself stop it at 21% to finish this category so yeah, it's good

1 A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine - still my favourite

[5] Hugo finalist

rmc28: Captain Marvel glowing (light it up)

The finalists are:

  • The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders (Tor; Titan)
  • Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir (Tor.com Publishing)
  • The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley (Saga; Angry Robot UK)
  • A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine (Tor; Tor UK)
  • Middlegame by Seanan McGuire (Tor.com Publishing)
  • The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow (Redhook; Orbit UK)

Of these, the only one I have read is A Memory Called Empire and it is great, you should all read it, I have bought it in three different media for myself and at least one medium for other people as gifts. The Ten Thousand Doors of January is sitting on the library book shelf waiting for me to have time to read it (it was due back in March but then all the library loans got silently extended to the end of April). I am not going to try to read Middlegame because I don't get on with Seanan McGuire's works and it doesn't help anyone if I keep trying to read them. Based on prior experience (or not) of the authors, and whatever mix of reviews/reactions I've seen to these books, my initial guess at a ranking is:

  1. A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine
  2. The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow
  3. The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders
  4. The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley
  5. Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

It'll be interesting to see how that changes after reading them! I'm looking forward to it.

rmc28: Rachel with manic grin holding up wrist with new watch on (watch)

Skating lesson this morning, followed by some practice skate, a bit of errand running and then back to the rink for some public skating until I was thoroughly worn out.

On the way home it was very convenient to drop in on Forbidden Planet, theoretically so offspring could look at the Transformers offerings. However, they came out with nothing and I came out with a pile of art books, and a paperback of A Memory Called Empire. I almost never buy paperbacks these days, it's ebooks or, apparently, giant hardbacks of art that need to be read laid out on a table anyway. But I love A Memory Called Empire enormously.

Behind the cut, three pictures: paperback copies of This Is How You Lose the Time War (some other new releases also visible); the surprisingly large display of signed books; what I actually bought and brought home (a giant hardback book of Black Widow art, artbooks for both the new The Lion King and an animated film Ferdinand, and a flyer for a signing next month by Una McCormack of her Picard series tie-in novel.)

The FP staff are very nice; we had a chat at the till about Una McCormack and how great her books are and how nice it is to have local authors come in for events and how the signing is conveniently timed for post-skating. I am now about 500% more motivated than before to actually watch Picard, and hopefully I may even like it.

Recently finished:

The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King (library book)
Sherlock Holmes, in beekeeping retirement in Sussex, meets and trains up a brilliant young woman, Mary Russell in the shadow of the First World War. Together, they fight crime! I had picked up the second in this series (A Monstrous Regiment of Women) on impulse at the library a few weeks ago, and enjoyed it enough to determine to work my through the series. I think I probably enjoyed the second slightly more than the first, which is a good sign for onward reading.

Bearista (Bodyguard Shifters #1) by Zoe Chant
She's a single mum who accidentally witnesses a robbery on her way to open up the coffeeshop. He's the shapeshifting bodyguard assigned to protect her. Together they fight crime! I mean, take down the shapeshifting criminal on her trail, while also keeping a cute kid and a hilarious grandmother safe.

A Memory of Empire by Arkady Martin (audiobook)
Once I started this, it took over all my listening time. It's absolutely gripping and keeps ratcheting up the tension and I organised my evening yesterday to listen to it in every possible moment in order to finish. Mahit Dzmare is the new ambassador from her little space-station republic to the giant space empire next door, and on arrival she finds herself swept up into political intrigue and personal peril. Her predecessor has been murdered, there's something wrong with her station's secret technology, there are multiple attempts on her life, and she keeps running up against culture shock and the reality of always being Other to the empire and its citizens.

I really enjoyed the Aztec-derived giant space empire, and the interactions of Mahit with everyone, but especially her cultural liaison. (The disadvantage of audio-only is that I have no idea how anything is spelled, and had to google Mahit's name to get it right.) I want to listen to it all over again, or maybe get hold of it in actual text and read it.

Currently reading:

Pet Rescue Panther (Bodyguard Shifters #2) by Zoe Chant
More shapeshifter bodyguarding, this time involving some very cute kittens.

The True Queen by Zen Cho
Also audiobook, only just started but liking so far!

James Davis Nicoll tweeted a specific example of people's tendency to help when disasters happen, which I saw the same day I'd read Object Oriented by Arkady Martine.

Elizabeth Bear kicked off a lengthy twitter thread about non-disastrous generation ship scenarios.  Later that day, I read Light, like a candle flame by Iona Sharma which is essentially about a functioning society safely-arrived by generation ship.

Obviously I'm not noting all the twitter threads I've read that don't match up with a short story I read the same day (!) but I'm happy to be spotting patterns where people are kind to each other and things mostly work.
