Friends only

Ok, so I've gone and flocked my journal, even though I seldom have anything personal to say. But if you chance upon this and would like to read the few other things I say here, comment and I'll probably add you. I've only a few friends as is, and am always looking for more.

doggie bloggie

I am living at home because I have no money. Well, I have some, but nowhere near close to my 'move-out and get a dog' goal. But I have been planning ahead anyway, making lists upon lists of potential expenses. One particular issue is finding an apartment that is not only pet-friendly, but that allows for "aggressive breeds" since I have every intention of getting myself a German Shepherd (or mix thereof) and so I'll need a place that allows them. This lead me to realize how tedious it is to find apartments that allow aggressive breeds. All the apartment sites allow you to filter for places that allow pets-- but then there are  specifics (cats only, dogs under 25lbs, etc.) and in many, many cases-- breed restrictions apply. However, there is no real standard list of prohibited breeds. I mean, there kind of is, but not really. You still need to check with every place because some places prohibit Dalmations and Chows and Huskies (that is, breeds beyond the normal Rottweiler, Pit Bull, Doberman, and GSD). So in order to find out, you have to contact each and every one...which is what they want, I suppose. They always say "breed restrictions apply, contact us for details"... why not just post the restrictions? It would save everyone a LOT of time. *sigh* Anyway, I decided to take this duty upon myself, so...

Pretty sure none of my flist lives anywhere near me, but even so, I figured I'd share.

cat has fleas

My cat has fleas. :(

Which likely means my house has fleas.

Any advice? There seem to be millions of different solutions proposed online, I'd like to hear from some people I "know" who have had personal experience dealing with it, so if any of you have, how did you deal?

He's so miserable. I feel so bad. And also disgusted at the thought of tiny bugs hopping around... ugh

my domestic skills are up and coming

My aunt got me a cookbook for Christmas. So far I've made a Greek-style chicken skillet, tuna kabobs with vegetable rice, and today, Moroccan lamb with wild and long-grain rice. Also, chocolatey tiramisu parfaits. That last one's my favorite. Anyway, so far everything's been turning out surprisingly well. Don't know why I'm sharing really this.

Now, off to Criminal Minds, while Mother and Father watch American Idol downstairs!

I'm still unemployed (in Greenland), if anyone is wondering.

book!meme!

Meme snagged from biffyhouse , because I couldn't resist.

1. Take five books off your bookshelf.
2. Book #1 -- first sentence
3. Book #2 -- last sentence on page fifty
4. Book #3 -- second sentence on page one hundred
5. Book #4 -- next to the last sentence on page one hundred and fifty
6. Book #5 -- final sentence of the book
7. Make the five sentences into a paragraph:

They have said that we owe our allegiance to Safety, that he is our Red Cross who will provide us with ointment and bandages for our wounds and remove the foreign ideas the glass beads of fantasy the bent hairpins of unreason embedded in our minds. There we were, awaiting and peeting away at the old knify moloko, and you had not turned up. One of those children stole, which is a bad sin. For a long time inside the orange fire you can see the black horse shape real clear. "One of us had to accept the agony, " she said, "and he was always the stronger."

1) Faces in the Water-- Janet Frame
2) A Clockwork Orange-- Anthony Burgess
3) The Poisonwood Bible-- Barbara Kingsolver
4) The Liars' Club-- Mary Karr
5) Children of Dune-- Frank Herbert

Well, it seems my little paragraph is rather chaotic/traumatic. Also, I had a bit of deja-vu as I typed out the first sentence and I realized it's because I typed it out here before. The opening of that book is really good. Anyway, 'tis a fun meme. I recommend it to any of you few on my flist. Just grab five random books off your shelf and see what comes of it.

today

Today I...

Went wedding dress shopping with my friend. I'm going to be her Maid of Honor. :)

Raked leaves with my dad because he made me. :(

Watched 3 back-to-back episodes of Law & Order: SVU because productivity was the only alternative.

Am planning to open up the Word doc of my story for the first time in at least 2 months. *is hopeful the Muse will strike*

Also of note:

I am curious how much money Radiohead will raise at their benefit for Haiti tonight. Did anyone else watch that Hope for Haiti Now telethon? It was pretty good. Made me donate. I tried to call but the line kept being busy so I just did it online. I was hoping John Krasinski would answer just so I could tell driveintoalake about it. :) Ah well, I suppose if I'd have gotten through I probably would have ended up speaking to some normal operator and not Jim Halpert anyway.

Comic trade paperbacks for sale

I finally sold one of the comic trades (for those who don't know a trade is a volume collecting multiple issues) from my class. It was a Wonder Woman title too. I was a bit surprised, since she isn't as popular and I didn't exactly have it listed for cheap. At least not compared to a lot of the other items I had listed. I sold some of the stuff that wasn't getting any attention online at Powells, but I still have some stuff posted at ebay so I figured I'd stick a link in here in case any one of you few people on my flist are interested or are in need of a holiday gift for someone who might like such a thing:

shop.ebay.com/cainthemahdi/m.html

(Also, we can arrange a sale outside of ebay, too-- that way I'm not forced to give them a cut).

There are two signed copies in there too-- so if you know someone who's a really big Wonder Woman and who particulaly loves Gail Simone's run, this could be a perfect gift for them. Likewise, I have a hardcover edition of Gotham Central signed by Greg Rucka. Both of these are significantly more expensive seeing as they are signed, but I am somewhat flexible.

Anyway, I imagine this is more or less in vain, but I need to advertise anywhere I can. :) And the holidays are coming up and these could be great gifts for the right people.
