Character: Oswin Oswald
Fandom: Doctor Who
Character Notes:
- Using bits and pieces from old applications, mostly personality
History:
[note: since Oswin has only appeared in one episode, her history is unfortunately, rather short.]
Not too, too much is known about Oswin Oswald’s background before the crash of the Starship Alaska. One can infer that she lived with mother, seeing as she was mentioned before. No mention of a father, but we’ll assume she lived with him as well. As a child and young adult, she had ambitions for space travel, wanting to see the universe some way or another. We can also infer that Oswin learned to hack into computers at some point in her life, and was an extremely bright child and teenager.
Her opportunity to see the universe came in form of the Starship Alaska. They needed a Junior Entertainment Manager and Oswin needed a lift to the stars. It might have only been a cruise ship, but she was willing to take anything by that point. And so, she was signed on. Unfortunately, they weren’t out for more than a day when the Alaska crashed into a nearby planet. Said planet turned out to be the Asylum of the Daleks, where the most advanced warrior race in the universe kept their insane.
Most of the crew was killed on impact, but somehow, Oswin survived unharmed. Climbing a ladder out of the ship, she wandered the corridors of the asylum, trying to find a way out. On the planet, the Daleks had installed a nanocloud, small microbes in that would convert any organic matter, living or dead, into a Dalek puppet. However, Oswin wasn’t so lucky. Because of her genius mind, the Daleks performed a full conversion, transforming her from a human into a Dalek, and stuck her in the very heart of the Asylum.
Unable to face the reality of what happened, Oswin retreated into her mind, dreaming up a world where she was perfectly human and trapped in the wreckage of the Alaska and awaiting rescue. She stayed that way for a year, unaware of what she had become and sending out signals.
During this year, Oswin fancied that the Daleks were attempting to gain entry to her room. It's theorized that this was the conversion attempting to take over. However, even in her dream world and totally unaware that there even was a conversion going on, Oswin was strong enough to keep herself human on a subconscious level. This was achieved by baking souffles, of all things, in her little world, even if she wasn't good at it. Just this simple activity kept her human.
She never questioned where her endless supplies came from, though.
Personality:
Intelligence is perhaps the key part of Oswin’s personality, and why everything that happened to her occurred. Oswin is exceptionally intelligent, enough so that she was converted fully into a Dalek because of it. She is good with computers, and can hack into even the most advanced of databases. She also has an extensive knowledge of computers and technology in general, as well as a number of other subjects.
She possesses a definite flirty and playful side, and isn’t beyond exposing it to keep the mood light. In even the worst of times, Oswin is able to keep her head, and help others to do the same. It’s her way of comforting both the people around her, and herself. That being said, sometimes this is just a bit of an act, put on to keep herself from, for lack of a better phrase, freaking out. Her mind and her will is exceptionally strong compared to others, having been able to keep her human during her conversion to Dalek.
Though she was unable to accept the horror of what happened to her at first, once she eventually does, she is able to repress the Dalek instinct to exterminate and instead, use her access to the technology of the Asylum to help the Doctor, Amy and Rory escape. Her selflessness allowed her to let the Doctor go, and sacrifice herself so that others might escape when she never could.
More than anything, Oswin is adventurous. The entire reason she joined the crew of the Starship Alaska was to see the worlds that were outside of her own. She’s curious and ready to meet new people and experience everything she can in the universe. To see the stars, as it were. Being cooped up for a year has shown, and she’s somewhat unaware of a few social customs, but she does like people, regardless. Oswin is friendly to most, and rather chatty if you get her going. Or even if you don’t for that matter.
Other:
- Oswin will be making mostly text and voice posts, seeing as she’s currently in a Dalek’s body. She might not acknowledge it yet, but in her little world, she’ll just not see the video option.
- She’ll be looking to fix that, actually, once she does find out.
- She’s one of those l337 hacker types, so I’ll be making a permissions post for that.

First Person (entry type):
[There’s no image, no text, but a young-sounding, female voice. Oswin’s talking to herself.]
Brilliant! Been looking for an internet connection for ages, couldn’t get anywhere but the data files…
[And now her voice is excited, and a little bit rushed. She hasn’t properly talked to anyone in a very long time.]
Hello! Is there anyone there?
Don’t suppose any of you’ve been traveling in space, have you? None of my signals’ve been picked up, thought I might get somewhere on here.
Anyway. Introductions. I’m Oswin. Oswin Oswald, Junior Entertainment Manger on the Starship Alaska. I’m afraid I’m a bit stuck where I am at the moment, anyone care to offer some help?
Third Person:
[note: sample is set in oswin’s dream world.]
They always come at night, Oswin noticed.
It was quiet in the little room she’d found for herself in the wreckage, for once, no sounds of Daleks attempting to gain entry or opera blaring from the speakers. Curled up in her hammock, Oswin dozed, escaping from this place in the only way she knew how. It had been hard, staying in the same place for a whole year, especially when she’d just been ready to explore the universe for herself. Keeping herself sane was a daily priority. But, it couldn’t be too much longer until someone heard her distress signals, right?
A loud ‘bang!’ suddenly sounded from the other side of the room, and Oswin jerked awake, sitting up in her hammock to look over at the door. Robotic voices shouted on the other side, demanding entry, and as whatever it was continued to hit the door, the wood began to splinter, threatening to snap right in two. Taking immediate action, she leapt to her feet, snatching up her hammer as she ran to where her pile of boards was. Being small, Oswin wasn’t very strong, but she was able to slap a board over the splintering wood and was quick to nail it into place.
As she held the boards in place, shutting her eyes, the banging faded away, as though the Daleks beyond the door had slowly vanished. Most likely, they got bored and left, Oswin figured, taking a step back and walking to the computer screen just a little ways away. A ship had been in range of the asylum’s sensors for a long time now, a Dalek ship. But, nothing had happened, and Oswin was beginning to believe nothing would. Perhaps it was only there to prevent other ships from even getting close.
She didn’t want to think like that. No, no. Her rescuer would come someday. All she needed to do was be patient.
