Feels like a good time to remind certain people that this is coming from Judith Butler, who is not just a leading feminist philosopher, but also THE COFOUNDER OF QUEER THEORY

The literal cofounder of queer theory as an academic field says that abandoning trans people is fascist logic.

The voices in our community trying to exclude us may be loud, but they are not right, and they do not speak for the community as a whole or our history or anything at all.

Trans people belong here. We always have, and we always will.

Shout out to all the Black ppl that can no longer participate directly in the fandom they love because of the stresses of racism 👍🏾 you contain multitudes of value and I'm sorry that the color of your skin and the power of your voice makes people not want to acknowledge that.

Yes, nonblack people can reblog. I'd appreciate it, in fact, if y'all took the time to vocally support your Black friends/fans in fandom.

This is about Sci-Hub. yeah we get it.. gatekeep knowledge and protect the interests of capital…

Listen, this is serious.

Do not use the website called Sci-Hub!

It lets people access scientific articles for free. This is dangerous. It helps the free flow of knowledge and reduces the competitive edge of all the people who worked really hard to have been born into a wealth.

Like, it’s literally a website where you can type in the DOI of an article and read it, without ever having to pay the publisher who exploited the author.

So, again, do not, under any circumstance, use Sci-Hub. I mean, can you imagine a world where knowledge is free and easily accessible to everyone? Even, y'know, poor people?

Libgen also has many books online, including textbooks, searchable by name, author, and ISBN. Can you imagine textbook companies not getting their hard-earned income from poor college students? Here is the link just so you make sure that you never accidentally stumble across this horrible, unethical website.

Oh, and while we’re talking about books, if you’ve managed to stay clear from Libgen, definitely don’t go to zlibrary, where you can also find a lot of textbooks, but unfortunately they’re completely free.

Reblogging so you know which sites to totally avoid

Another inside tip from academia: Those papers in really expensive journals that are effectively inaccessible to anyone not in a university network? Depending on the discipline it’s very likely that same paper is on a “preprint” server somewhere, with no access restrictions.

Like if you want to read basically any physics, math, or CS paper, arXiv.org will have you covered, because everyone uploads their papers there before submitting to a journal (and generally updates it after peer review). I know all of my papers are on there. This is such common practice that journals have it baked into their licensing agreements that authors retain the right to upload their work to these places.

So the next time you get hit with that paywall, you may not even need sci-hub, just click the arxiv link on google scholar instead.

if for some reason none of this works, the old “send a email nicely asking for the paper to the author” is always a good trick. remember most scientists hate the commercialisation of scientific knowledge

Don’t mind me, just gotta share this with my bf so that he knows what websites to avoid

Many authors of papers are on ResearchGate! You can ask for papers there, if they don’t just post a copy to download. If they’re associated with a college, you can usually find their email addresses in the department directory, also.

Always reblog.

Hooray! Yay! Dykes!

I'm not seeing any naked adults in that screenshot...

...There's something deeply messed up about how breasts, which are used by our species to feed babies, are considered to be so perverse and obscene that a child should never see them.

There aren't any naked people in the entire video clip. There's some people that you'd probably see less of their skin on a beach, but only because on a beach they'd probably be wearing a bikini top as well as whatever else they have on. And this is New York City, where toplessness is legal regardless of gender or assigned sex.

Toplessness for breasts is legal in most places in the US, unlegislated in almost all that remain, and only illegal in two states: Ohio and Tennessee.

This is because topless equality has been a basic push from feminists for literally decades, until Radfems and NeoCons bonded over wanting a trans genocide less than a decade ago.

It's literally why the "no tits on tumblr" and other lesser SESTA/FOSTA consequences* like it were so jarring. It set back FORTY. YEARS. OF PROGRESS in the rights of people with breasts or perceived as women to wear the same clothes as people without.

Do not let conservatives lie to you about this. The majority of people in the us and the VAST majority of States recognize the right of people to not wear a damn shirt. It isn't obscenity, it isn't even nudity, it's just something pericis men are allowed that everyone else isn't.

Y'know.

Basic sexual discrimination.

*Y'all aren't still on that "it was the Apple app store that caused the tit ban" shit, right? It was the literal US federal government. To be fucking clear.

For context, this is Jewish actor Miriam Margolyes. A self-identified dyke, she was professor sprout in the harry potter movies but she's been extremely prolific over five decades. She's pro trans and pro Palestinian.

Never forget how she went and spoke to trans women / trans fems and when she said something that was ignorant (she mentioned the expectation for them to shave), she listened when they corrected her and apologized immediately. Then, when the group explained how they express gender, she went "I understand" and continued to listen and learn.

She's always one of my favorite examples of someone with celebrity status retaining humanity and speaking up for minorities.

I didn't know she was pro Palestine until now, so that makes me even happier to hear.

I was thinking about this today and I'm curious because it seems to be a thing in every place I've lived.

Is there an abandoned building in or near your city that people sneak into to explore and is rumored to be haunted, used for Satanic rituals, etc.?

Yes, it's rumored to be haunted

Yes, it's rumored that Satanists do Satan-y things there

Yes, it's rumored people died or were murdered there

Yes, multiple of the rumors above

Yes, but different rumors

No, but there was a location like this in another place I lived

No, there is no place like this where I live that I am aware of

See Results

Bonus: share in the comments more details about the place, the rumors, and whether or not you've been there!

So I live kinda nearish to the abandoned Titan-1 missile silos in CO. And while at a friend's wedding, I got to talking to her dad (Sam), who grew up right next to them. He starts telling me that when he was like, 12, he and his friends from the fundie church they all grew up in decided to go explore the missile silos because they'd heard that there were satanic cultists doing rituals in there, and thought they were gonna be God's Big Heroes and rescue some kids or puppies or whatever.

"So we go down there, wearing our bike helmets and sports pads, armed with softball bats and hockey sticks- We must've looked dumb as hell, because I weight eighty pounds sopping wet at the time- and start exploring the silo with flashlights and singing 'In The Lord's Army' and that kind of shit-" Sam explains, casually waving a beer bottle. The other guy at the table starts snort-laughing and nodding.

"Shut up Terry!" Says Sam, mock-slapping his friend's shoulder. "Anyway, the four of us are shuffling through this dark-ass underground building full of junk, about to piss ourselves and- SHUT UP TERRY I'M TELLING THE STORY- and we see this faint light coming from under one of the doors. Gotta be where they're doing the rituals, right? So we sneak up to the door-"

"I could hear you from like, half a mile off." Terry giggles.

"Dude shut up- we don't sneak up to the door, and my heart is going a mile a minute, we're about to fight the actual devil or some this, right? So I kick the door in and scream "THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU-!" Sam says, way too loud for 1 AM in a suburban neighborhood, but hey, it's a wedding.

Terry makes a noise like a dying rubber duck.

"But instead of like, maidens chained to summoning circles or whatever, it's just Terry chilling in a lawn chair he dragged down there." Sam sigh.

"HIGH AS FUCK, That's really important." Terry adds.

"-High as fuck, and we kinda stare at him, he stares at us, everything is really awkward, because I think I recognized you from the baskin-robbins."

"And he pipes up with 'Are you the satanists?'-" Terry adds in a cracking falestto. "-And I'm high as balls, so I just go 'What?'. So God's Littlest Soldier here starts telling me about the satanic cult in the missile silo and I understand maybe half of it. But like. I can't let a bunch of little kids walk around down there, what if one of you fell into the silo and broke your neck or something? I'm like, fifteen, but relatively speaking I'm the adult here, you know?"

"-I'M TELLING THE STORY TERRY!!" Sam hollers. "So he's like 'Can we help you look for them?' and I thought this was GREAT! More warriors for the cause and all. So we wander around the base for a while but there's not that much of it that you can actually walk in and we get bored real fast. So Terry- He-" My friend's dad starts to laugh, crumpling over the table.

"-So I ask them if they want to go back to the main base and play Dungeons and Dragons." Says Terry as Sam cackles. "And they're like, SURE! So We go back and roll up character sheets and play until dawn, and after that we met up like twice a month or so to play D&D in the abandoned missile Silo."

"The whole time, Terry is like- I gotta hand it to you man, for a teenager what you did was a goddamn miracle- Terry is carefully asking us about what church we go to and questions about the bible like "If God is all-powerful and Benevolent, how come there's evil? Either he's not all powerful or an asshole, right?" and then it's like "Well, we only have god's version of events about what happened between him an Lucifer" and so on-" Sam explains. "-Did a bang-up job deprogramming us from the fundie cult."

"Anytime man." Terry nods, toasting him with his beer. "It's what friends do, right?"

"-So correct me if I'm wrong." I say. "But I'm like ninety percent sure that the was a Satanic Wedding ceremony I just saw?"

"Oh, yeah, he converted us all to Satanism, I go to the Satanic Temple in Salem at least twice a year, raised my girls Satanist." Sam explains. "So there really were satanists in the missle silo, but the rituals were critical thinking lessons and D&D."

okay, for those interested, here is a full timeline of how we got to Count Binface:

1977: Star Wars is released, featuring, of course, Darth Vader

image

(Pictured: Darth Vader)

1984: Director Todd Durham releases his Star Wars parody movie, Hyperspace, featuring Darth Vader inspired villain Lord Buckethead.

image

(Pictured: Hyperspace poster featuring two Jawa-esque aliens flying through space in a shopping trolley.)

1987: Hyperspace is released on video in the UK, under the new title Gremloids.

image

(Pictured: Gremloids cover in the style of the original Star Wars poster, featuring Lord Buckethead.)

To promote the film, Mike Lee, the owner of the distributing company, ran for parliament as Lord Buckethead. He ran in Margaret Thatcher's constituency, Finchley, in order to get on TV. Lord Buckethead was representing the Gremloids party.

image

(Pictured: Lord Buckethead on TV with Margaret Thatcher.)

1992: Gremloids is re-released. Lord Buckethead rides again, this time against prime minister John Major in Huntingdon. (Here's a fun fact about Huntingdon: I was born there! :D) 87/92 Buckethead seems to have leaned pretty hard into the space supervillain thing, with campaign promises including 'demolish Birmingham to build a spaceport'.

image

(Pictured: Lord Buckethead on TV with John Major. Other notable candidates include Screaming Lord Sutch of the Monster Raving Loony Party.)

2017: comedian Jon Harvey, having recently watched Gremloids and learned of Lord Buckethead's candidacy for parliament, decides it's a great bit. He runs against Theresa May in Maidenhead. 2017 Buckethead seems to have a wackier and also more political approach, with campaign promises ranging from nonsense like 'nationalise Adele' to gesturing at actually sensible policies with stuff like 'lower the voting age to 16 and restrict voting after age 80'.

He also made an appearance on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. As with his previous incarnation, he was a member of the Gremloids party.

image

(Pictured: Lord Buckethead dabbing on stage with Theresa May.)

2018: Director Todd Durham asserts his legal ownership of Lord Buckethead. Jon Harvey opted not to go to court over Buckethead and handed over the reins. Todd Durham extended an invitation to anyone who wanted to be the 'authorised' Lord Buckethead.

image

(Pictured: the new Lord Buckethead.)

2019: Lord Buckethead, now played by journalist David Hughes, stood against Boris Johnson in Uxbridge and South Ruislip. He ran for the Monster Raving Loony Party, the UK's pre-existing gag candidate party. He ran with a similarly silly manifesto as the 2017 incarnation, but with a bit less of a political edge. His promises included 'All doorways to be increased by 1 foot (30 cm) in height' and 'Nigel Farage to be sold for parts'.

image

(Pictured: Lord Buckethead and Count Binface square up.)

Meanwhile, Jon Harvey in his new persona Count Binface, also ran against Boris Johnson. Buckethead and Binface face off! Binface ran as an independent with a manifesto once again blending silly and semi-serious promises such as 'nationalising model railways' and 'giving £1 trillion a week to the NHS'. This was also I believe the debut of his promise to 'move the hand dryer in the men's toilet at Uxbridge's Crown and Treaty pub to a more sensible position'.

image

(Pictured: Count Binface presenting the offending hand dryer, inconveniently close to both the sink and the urinals.)

He has a point.

2021: Count Binface runs for the position of Mayor of London for the first time, with promises such as 'London to join the European Union'. He notably finished ahead of far right party UKIP.

2023: Count Binface runs in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election following Boris Johnson's resignation. He once again gets more votes than UKIP.

May 2024: Count Binface once again runs to be Mayor of London, debuting his now iconic 'build at least one affordable house' promise. Notably, he finished ahead of far right party Britain First.

image

(Pictured: Count Binface with Rishi Sunak. Also pictured: Monster Raving Loony Party candidate Sir Archibald Stanton with a ventriloquist's dummy.)

July 2024: Count Binface stands in the general election, running in Richmond and Northallerton against prime minister Rishi Sunak. He debuts his promise to cap the price of 99p flakes at 99p. This is his most successful election to date with 308 votes.

image

(Pictured: Count Binface with Andy Burnham. Also pictured: independent candidate Robert Pownell, dressed as a fox for his own reasons.)

June 2026: Count Binface stands in the Makerfield by-election against Andy Burnham, (recently) former Mayor of Manchester running for parliament with the intention of standing in the Labour Party leadership contest.

image

(Pictured: Count Binface on BBC's Newsnight.)

July 2026 (this week): Count Binface announces his intention to run against Nigel Farage in the upcoming Clacton by-election. He is briefly the only other candidate in the race and by the time other candidates announce themselves the narrative of 'Nigel Farage vs Count Binface' has already bedded in. And then it was now, and then I don't know what happened.

For clarity's sake, Robert Pownall is dressed as a fox because he's an anti-fox hunting campaigner, and also he will be standing in the Farage Vs Binface election. So that's fun

Is “Nigel Farage shall be sold for parts” still a campaign promise? It should be.

Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.

Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this

Hell yeah moon holiday

Ooh coming up we should celebrate

PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)

MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY

moon day is 20th July!!!

Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!

Happy moon day to all who celebrate

This is your reminder to prep for Moon Day on July 20th.

MOON DAY MONDAY THIS MONTH NOT A DRILL!!!!!

The enthusiasm we didn’t have for the 4th this year, I think we can muster for this.

Hi guys! I thought I should just share my whole mini little library of Project Hail Mary-related things so they're all in one place:

It includes:

  • My transcript of the movie (more on that here)
  • Audio recordings of the movie
  • A PDF of the book
  • The full audiobook
  • A copy of Andy Weir's doc on Eridians

The audiobook and audio recordings all have their properties programmed so they (should) work just like songs with a track number, album cover, artist, and so on if you download them.

There are two audios of the movie, one is the entire film untouched and one is that same audio cut up and broken down into separate scenes for convenience.

Additionally, there are two versions of the transcript, one with time stamps that match the audio and one without. The time stamps (+ their titles from the audio) are outlined in that version, so if you double-click on that tab or click "show outline," they'll all show up and you can pick a specific scene.

As always, if anything's not working right, you notice any mistakes in the transcript, or any of the audios are cut wrong, please let me know and I'll fix it as soon as I can!

Now there's The Martian library too ^^

Thank you op!❤️

Augh you heroes! The waiting list for Libby is several months for all my libraries! Thank you!
