I think if Garak and Julian did get together during the show they would be one of those annoying couples who are constantly breaking up and getting together and you just want to shake them and scream "Either shit or get off the toilet!"

Julian breaks up with Garak because Garak is 20 years older than him and Julian is going through a quarter-life crisis. He dates a 20-year-old doing a gap year for a few episodes.

Garak breaks up with Julian because Julian left wet towels on the floor and now his place smells like mildew. He did consider just assassinating Julian, but breaking up is the smarter if not the most satisfying path.

Julian breaks up with Garak because Garak doesn't like his friends (Miles)

Garak breaks up with Julian because Julian doesn't respect his culture (subjugating others for the good of the State)

Julian breaks up with Garak not because Garak has a secret file on him but because he thinks it's kind of hot that Garak has a secret file on him and he's supposed to be an enlightened Federation citizen with normal fetishes, like being into feet.

Garak doesn't actually break up with Julian, but does fake his death for like 3 days after Julian says "I love you" for the first time.

for the last time. we are not having a beer with Bashir. we are not having a smoothie with Moogie. we are not having a grog with Nog, a margarita with Leeta, a shake with Jake, a gin with Kai Winn, kanar with Damar, a kombucha with Kira, or a cognac with Garak.

we are drinking stock with a Spock. take it or leave it.

are the delta flyer flightsuits some sort of stock replicator flightsuit or did they like… design them to go with the ship

clementine-kesh

i mean designing a custom outfit while harry, b’elanna, and seven are working on miniaturizing their new warp engine heat modulation tech does seem like a likely thing for tom to do

clementine-kesh

tuvok is trying to focus on helping harry, b’elanna, and seven but keeps ducking out to point out “tactical flaws” in tom’s flightsuit design and this is the only reason they didn’t end up looking like something designed by a teenager who only watches mech anime

tags from @mnemonicpneumaticknife that read: #I feel like Tom would have made the flightsuits look more "retro-futuristic" but maybe he had someone tell him 'no' #when he suggested his initial design that was 90% shiny latex or whatever. #star trek #voyagerALT

@mnemonicpneumaticknife *tuvok voice* mr. paris the tight shiny latex is a highly suboptimal choice for a flightsuit as it not only inhibits movement but is also extremely visible to everyone within a ten kilometer radius

"Mario Mario" is an anachronism. He and his brother were only ever referred to by mononyms in their lifetime, like most residents of the Mushroom Kingdom at the time - multi-part names were typically reserved for members of the Toadstool dynasty, and even these were more like titles or Roman cognomina than what we would call a surname today. His putative ennoblement as founder of the "House of Mario" came centuries later as the collapsing feudal order sought additional sources of legitimacy

prokopetz

#mushroom kingdom folklore says that he sleeps beneath a warp pipe to arise in the time of the kingdom's greatest need #he's definitely shown up a few times but it's hard to tell if he has risen from the dead or is just in the middle of some time travel shit #historians hate him.

rlyehtaxidermist

#hey op if you're still checking tags i just wanna say; only referring to luigi as his brother is such a good touchALT

While the historical evidence for Mario having a younger brother is quite concrete, the name of said brother is less certain. "Luigi" is generally held to originate with a separate figure from a series of chthonic myths, who originally served as a sort of psychopomp charged with capturing spirits that escaped the underworld. The strongest case for a contemporary figure named Luigi comes from the Waffle Kingdom sagas; however, this Luigi's brother is a gladiator named Gonzales.

#i see we're ignoring the existence of waluigi. typical historianALT

now I know that there's no way for me to respond to this without a bunch of fans of the modern adaptations ruining my inbox for the next week, but there's no evidence of Waluigi - or indeed Luigi - in any of the contemporary versions of the Mario-Wario sagas. The name "Wario" itself is a later invention, held to be a pun on warui that likely emerged after the adoption of Japanese scripts in the Koopa States.

The conflict between Mario and his "boyhood rival" was one over political influence on his home island and Mario's long absences - in particular his trip to Sarasaland. While later Sarasan sources would heavily reference Mario's brother, he is absent from both the preceding narrative and the unrest in Mario's homeland. The historical consensus is that the Sarasaland journey was one of Mario's earliest wanderings, with his brother attempting to manage affairs in his absence and proving unfit. The invention of a separate "Wario" character and its development into an explicit coup d'etat were later poetic creations, as is distancing of the "Wario" figure from the later depictions of Mario's brother as the more cowardly and reserved "Luigi".

(As an aside: "Mario Land" is a mistranslation. The original Mushroomer and Sarasan chronicles are better translated as "the land of Mario", without connotations of ownership. The modern scholastic consensus is that it refers to Yoshi's Island, where Mario and his brother spent their youth and later established a small manor, not, as commonly depicted, a "Mario Castle". The emphasis on Mario as king of "Mario Land" was a mostly successful political maneuver by the Yoshis to retain coequal status with the Mushroom Kingdom heartlands in the face of 18th-century expansionist pan-Mushroomism.)

The later emergence of "Waluigi" is an ironic recombination of two figures from the same historical source, and may have originated as a farce parodying the Mario stories. (The name "Waluigi" is also conflated with the early Norman figure Varr Yngwi, who is generally credited with the invention of tennis.)

I will never relate to a character harder than I do Howl Jenkins-Pendragon.

He had a choice: Give your heart to a Fire Demon and live in an ever moving castle as you are being hunted by a vicious witch who wishes to consume you

OR

Pay back your student loans

And he chose the former. So real of him. I would done the same, no second thoughts.

No but for real, his undergrad would've been virtually free, in the 1980s in the UK. For the sake of the bit, he likely did not do much teaching at all to support himself in grad school, let alone taking a part-time job, and would've been cobbling together some grants for his tuition and "research," but would have taken some loans for buying books, paying rent, eating, and living on. On the one hand, he went to Swansea, at a time when rent was cheap, and his car is garbage; on the other, he spends all of his money instantly on fabulous outfits, skincare products and instruments he can't play, so he probably could rack up debt in a really impulsive irritating way. Megan does imply that he received more financial support than he deserved, and squandered it.

His student loans were probably £65.73, and he wouldn't have even had to pay them back until his income was high enough, but that concept probably freaked him out, because it implied he might get a job
