your strengths are harder to see than your weaknesses because the problems you're good at solving don't appear as problems, because you're so good at handling them before they become problems... unlike the relatively rare problem that becomes a crisis, which demands undue attention. it's sort of like a reverse survivorship bias. the problems that become noticed as problems, the moments where you notice your capacity has a gap, are only the ones that aren't cut off at the pass by your strength and capability, before they become problems. so if all you focus on is problems then all you'll see is your weaknesses. which isn't accurate
#i always forget how bad that room looks #not in the sprite way it's incredibly effective #just the cracks and peeling wallpaper #and the dirt on the bed #i think the point of it being lonely is also important #the game is sort of contradictory on whether susie is living with caretakers and whether those caretakers are her parents #but i think it's pretty safe to say that they're not a source of comfort if they're present #at minimum #there's other implications about susie's family but i don't know that the game is going to delve into those heavily #while carol and asgore have moments of emotional neglect #susie's relationship to food is very much written like she is being extremely neglected at best #in a basic needs sense #and that's already pretty heavy #without getting into susie's poor self image #her relationship to violence #and touch in general #as well as the can of worms that is her relationship to toriel #how even before the end of ch5 susie was always sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop
Don't forget the large patch of mold and/or severe water damage in the corner!
Like, I'm not even saying that Susie's relationship with the Dark World is 100% healthy. It's a messy situation, and the story is not being particularly subtle about spitting on its hands and winding up to deliver Susie the emotional beating of her life with it. But anyone framing that messiness as something Susie could avoid if she just wised up and made smarter choices is simply not engaging with the text. There isn't a healthy foundation for Susie to choose. That's one of the central tragedies of her character. The only reliable support network Susie has is a handful of emotionally disturbed teens and the magical kingdom she found in a closet, and while both of them love her, they are equally powerless to offer permanent solutions to the fact that Susie's life sucks bad.
A segment of the fandom has correctly identified that the Dark World is not a good long-term home for Susie, and have concluded that Susie still happily choosing to make it her home must mean she's delusional and self-destructive. Doesn't Susie know living in the Dark World isn't a great option? Is she stupid? Is she giving up on her life?
Susie isn't delusional, she isn't stupid, and she's not giving up on her life. She is seizing as much life as she can with both hands, and it isn't enough. She's choosing not-great options and smiling with gratitude as she does so because even this much is more than she's ever had before. It makes me SICK. It's so fucking good. I'm so scared for her. And to take that and turn it into "yikes, Susie can't handle reality" is just so infantilizing and... weirdly privileged, honestly?
"Ewww, Susie's sleeping on the floor? And not getting a nutritious breakfast? She must be really losing it to choose that over living at home!"
It speaks to a lack of imagination and empathy, at best.
