After being linked to the discussion here about non-McKay/Sheppard lovers in SGA fandom, I just had to check it out because holy crap, is that ever me in every other fandom I've ever been in (except Gundam Wing, in which I liked 1x2 and 3x4, and that was so brief and so long ago as to be negligable). That said, I agree in part with the "if you're not getting what you want, write it yourself" mentality, but man, do people realize how exhausting that is? So many times I've ended up in a feedback loop of myself and 2-3 other disgruntled fans going back and forth over AIM saying "maybe if we just collect enough photos/are nice enough/write an epic hook-up fic/write crack fic/write prompts!/do drabbles/start communities/etc. etc. etc. people will see some appeal in our pairing/read us more/start writing" - but do you know how many times none of that works?
...sorry, hang on. *sobs and sobs for past fandoms* Okay, back.
But now I'm like "John/Rodney yay!" and I have the luxury of only once in a while thinking, "hmm, I'd kind of like to see some Rodney/Elizabeth (or Rodney/Teyla, or McKay/Beckett, or Zelenka/McKay, or Ronon/Rodney, or Rodney/Cadman, or, or, or, and wow, is Rodney ever my OTC)." But when I do have that urge, there isn't a lot out there that I can find that is really satisfying*. And I'm a recs kind of girl, so when people point me to masterlists and archives, my response is more of a sigh than anything else. Also, I have carefully cultivated my reading list to cull out all the Rodney-haters, and am loathe to venture out into the big bad world where such people may exist. :P
Um. So where is the good stuff? Do I really have to join 983729823438 different pairing communities just to read a few fics with rare pairings, as the discussion would imply? Are there trusted reccers out there? Consistently good authors? Who would even know these things? Ahahaha....
*though actually I've read several awesome Rodney/Cadman fics, and
bibliotech is pretty much my go-to source for Rodney/Teyla, and hey, why is the Rodney het so good?

Date: 2006-12-09 01:58 am (UTC)I saw that discussion, but after reading some of the wank that was developing, my brain began to hurt and I moved on. I've fallen away from some fandoms because my favourite pairings weren't really being written at all, and I was pretty glad to find that this is not the case with SGA. I've stumbled upon some pretty good rec lists and that's been keeping me busy. It's weird to me, though, having slogged through HP fandom for so long, that the pairings here are so off-balance. I guess I'm part of the problem, because I don't really seek out any other pairings or notice their absence. Ah, well.

Date: 2006-12-09 03:20 am (UTC)I do feel kind of bad for the folks that don't ship Rodney/John. But then I run across more non-McShep fic than non-popular pairings in other fandoms I've been in, so it's not a complete loss. I don't belong to very many comms either- mostly I rely on recs and the newsletter for my fic. Hmm, I guess I don't really have an answer for you. Sorry about that!
