Okay, I have occasionally had this bullshit happen over the past few years, but over yesterday and today, I have had three comments like this on the same story. One of them included a "nice story" at the beginning, but the meat of it, and the entirety of the other comments, is about how the story is "as old" as the commenter, or "was written the year [they were] born." This is petty fuckwittery at the best of times, but to get a spate of comments like this now, with everything going on in the world, in fandom, and frankly, in my life (on top of job-hunting, I am having another sinus event, and there has been one of the usual plumbing incidents, because of course there has), is beyond infuriating. It's clearly some kind of targeted, childish harassment, and I have been deleting the comments, because otherwise the temptation would be too great to come back with replies of "what makes you think I give a shit, infant, grow the hell up," and they don't deserve the attention. At the same time, if this is just the beginning of a wave of this nonsense, I don't think deleting it is really a good solution, but also AO3's harassment policy is contingent on the harassee first trying to resolve the situation, which. How? Giving them attention will only encourage the little shits. Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue, or knows of anyone who is? Is this part of the stupidass anti "no one over the age of 25 should be in fandom" schtick?

I have only received one comment like this, and I replied 'Not here for your ageist bullshit' and they deleted the comment. Which I was good with. But it was not recently,

I just respond "Thanks! I'm so glad it holds up!" and I've never had them come back for more.

I found a script that allows you to hellban specific usernames on AO3, so you never see their comments on your own or anyone else's work. It doesn't prevent notifications sent to your email, and deleting the worst of the comments is probably a better option, but I found for certain commenters who are consistently annoying it relieved some of my stress.

This is the script if you want to try it, you'll need Tampermonkey to use it: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/3577-ao3-personal-hellban

Did you get recced on tumblr or somewhere? Is that why the influx of youths on that one story?

I've had a couple of those on random stories. Like [personal profile] musesfool I've taken them at face value when answering, usually with a version of her "glad it holds up" comment, which does seem to be a conversation stopper!

Ugh, that does make it just plain unpleasant. The "spam" thing is even more annoying - why on earth do such a ridiculous thing?

I suppose in their minds we should all be wearing mobcaps and sitting in rocking chairs by the fireside, or something. Utterly bizarre and infuriating.

I haven't had this happen, but I rarely get comments, so I suppose it might just be a matter of time till I do someday. (I mean, I am really old compared to most people I know in fandom; I have older friends, but a lot of people I associate with are considerably younger and many of my stories were in fact written before they were born. Yikes.) I saw a friend make what I thought was a hilarious response to garbage comments, and I'm going to use it for stupid things in the future: "'kay." I just loved that. So delightfully dismissive.

But I like destina's response for this sort of comment. And using the option to mark them as spam would be great--if they're legit, it's going to cause them grief.

That is incredibly shitty and I fully support your deleting their shittiness from your comments. Fuck those people.
