It’s becoming a running gag in my circles to mention some of the insane shit going on in my Sims game just to confuse my friends. The problem is that some of those friends started showing genuine interest in my storytelling. The problem with that problem is that I never played these games or wrote these stories with any intention to earnestly share their contents. And if I start fully sharing, then I’m going to regress to the version of myself that content-ified everything I do.

So instead I’m finding a balance. Rather than publishing the tens of thousands of words I have stashed away for my own enjoyment, I’m going to be summarizing each chapter of the story on my blog. I’ll be cleaning up some of the weirder or more personal details but I’ll leave the spirit of the story intact alongside some reflections on the older content. That way this project remains something just for me, but I’m given the option to share.

I’ll be editing this post to link to all future posts within the story. You can use this to sort through the story as it gets more and more complex.

The Pre-Integration Arc

  1. Chapter I - The Pursuit of Immortality
  2. Chapter II - The Butler of Goth Manor
  3. Chapter III - What Stares From the Water
  4. Chapter IV - The Lunar Lakes Alien Integration Program

Here’s the context you need to approach this story:

I just saw the new Gbay video. It was a beautiful watch with a great message, but I personally received it a bit strangely.

The video follows Gbay’s life while creating what he believed to be his magnum opus, constantly interrupted by life changes and conflicting priorities. That’s a plight that resonates a ton with me. I had just started working on what I believed was my perfect video project (my comp archetype analysis videos) when I hit some major life changes. I had to pull back from a lot of my efforts and rediscover who I was - and it turns out I’m a lot more artistic than I thought.

Before we got anywhere near the Kingdom Hearts-level nonsense I’ve been tormenting my friends with, we started very a very simple premise. The year is 2015, and I’m looking for a new way to enjoy the Sims 3. I’ve only ever played long legacy families or, in the early days, single characters with aging and story progression turned off. The problem I’m having is that I struggle to keep things fresh and interesting after four or five generations of the same family.

My solution was to use a self-insert. I’d spend my sim-self’s lifetime achieving true immortality while progressing my family as I normally do, then when they all died, I could move to a new town and start again while retaining some sense of progression.

This idea would eventually grow into the most important creative project of my entire life - a project that helped me to understand what it means to be alive - but I’m getting ahead of myself. We’re supposed to get through the simple chapters played by a high-schooler first.

Becoming Your Own Audience

This is a repost of a post I made on September 5th 2024.

I realized over the last year that I had a really toxic relationship with my work. For years I’ve believed that my purpose on this Earth is to learn for the sake of other people, to leverage my analytical and creative skills to share cool discoveries with others in an approachable way. The niche I carved for that goal was in esports video guides; I love engaging with the hidden depth of competitive games, and with the creative expression of video production. And so that became who I was.
