monthly design challenges bringing lj glory

I know some of you are very clever, so I started here rather than other knitting sites. My daughter is very fond of Totoro (the anime character) and I thought it might be do-able to knit up a Totoro. He's vaguely owl shaped, so it can't be that hard, but I'm looking for insights as to how to knit the components and assemble him. Anyone have any ideas or done this before and have a pattern?

Kinda a gothic vintage made for Ditzy’s Graduation in May out of Okara Sock in Noir and Dragon's Kiss in White/Green Glow

The shaping is all in the ribbing.

Strategically placed decreases in the ribbing thru the black give it the shape.

Worked in the round to above the bust, then the sleeves are done in a lace stitch from some stitch dictionary I have, then joined in the center of the back by 3 needle bind off, then seamed to the black portion.

well, folks- we didn't get any designs for madam trash heap, so i've no eternal glory to dish out. :( but, that's okee- here's hoping that this month's challenge goes better!

those lazy summer days of a childhood long remembered, may be behind us, but that does not mean our personal longings for such worry-free times have abandoned! sometimes the memory of being a kid, soaking up the sun in a ruffled bathing suit with chocolate ice cream spilled down the front is truly a beautiful thing. :) and with that rather bizzare image in mind, i give you july's design challenge.

I have had a request made of me, from my 4 1/2 year old daughter. She wants a winter ensemble (mittens, scarf and hat). We went and picked out some yarn in three different (nearly clashing) colors. So, now I'm challenged with what to knit. I have my idea, but I'm hoping someone has already done this so I don't have to invent the pattern. I want to do an illusion pattern in cats or cat faces or something equally girlie. I'm pretty sure I can just to the hat and scarf in stripes, but I would like to do the scarf in the illusion. Any one got a pattern already made up or have any tips on the creation of it?

as summer unfolds her green splendor around us, we turn and think of the lazy summer days we had as children. our gardens grow and bloom, and we have but one lovely (if not totally insane) woman to thank for that.




now here's a real challenge! madam trash heap really is the girl who has everything! what would she need? what would she knit? or would she spin some banana silk from those mountains of old peels? you tell me!

congratulations are in order for poke_fu and callingcry!

poke_fu designed a lovely pinstripe-esque scarf for jack's colder christmas nights. her attention to the details, making the scarf look as though the stripes were drawn on, is pure, woolen perfection. i love everything about this scarf, as it's suited for jack perfectly, and would also do quite well in many, many punk outfits. (a decided bonus.) good job, poke_fu. you have secured yourself some eternal lj glory.

callingcry took the pirate win with a fantastic design for a bottle of rum. very well presented with optional looks, this little bottle caddy is something i hope to make for myself. i can see this on jack's hip, bouncing as he dukes it out with barbosa, but i can also see this being adapted in other areas of fantasy. a mermaid's caddy? a siren's sare? here's hoping her friend comes through with a pattern! congratulations, callingcry. you have secured yourself some eternal lj glory.

june's challenge is forthcoming, my pets. get those design ideas up and going!

I stumbled upon this journal via a mention from a friend, and when she told me about this I was so excited I came up w/an idea straightaway. (Although I love the 2 Jacks alike, this idea just popped out at me, so no offense, Mr. Skellington! ;)) I'm hoping that although I'm not a knitter or crocheter m'self, that those of you who do work the yarns out there will enjoy it, & that it's customizable enough to keep things interesting. :)

Ooh, and my apols. for the dungy image quality. As my scanner's in boxes, it's a photo of my sketchbook. ;P
