Project Management Survey

Dear Colleague,

Would you be willing to participate in the survey about the role of personality in a project team? I am conducting the survey as a part of the research thesis “Discovering Intertype Relations in a Project Team” for New York University. The study is interested to find out the correlation between personality type and how different personality types influence each other while working together in a project team. Participants must be willing to answer an online questionnaire which consists of two parts: the first part of the questionnaire measures your personality type, and the second part reveals your communication choices. It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete the survey.

If you are interested in participating in the survey, upon completion of the research you will receive a summary report and a brief profile of your personality type.

If you are interested and willing to volunteer, but have questions please contact me by email address listed below, otherwise you can access the survey at

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

recommended books

Now that I've got my PMP, what are some good PM books to read? I have a lot of software project background, so IT-oriented books would be more useful than, say, construction books.
If it makes a difference, I'm more apt to grok HeadStart than Rita. :)

Theatre Experience?

I'm working on documenting my hours in preparation of (eventually) taking the CAPM exam, and realized that I might be able to actually make use of my college degree! I majored in Theatre and spent a fair amount of time doing shows. So since a theatre production is, essentially a project, do you think I'd be able to count these hours? It abides by the triple constraint rule (set time period, scope, and budget), and I've come to the conclusion that a Stage Manager is essentially a project manager...so I want to say yes; but before I go forward with it and count these 300+ hours in, I'd like to hear from people who've actually been in Project Management for a while.

Oh, and on a side note - yay PMI for offering student memberships! I'm a returning student right now, so I was thrilled to discover this option. I think that it'll be $40 well spent.

Thanks!

New PM Wannabe

Hiya!

I'm in the process of a career change from I-just-do-what-they-tell-me to Project Management. I recently learned about the CAPM exam and am hoping to take it within the next year. My biggest concern with this, however, is about tracking hours. I need 1500 project hours in order to qualify for the exam.

So what I'm wondering is:
*Does anybody track their hours?
*How do you do it?
*What counts as a "project hour"? (Is it only team projects, or can you count personal projects that you do on your own?)

Any and all advice on getting started on a career in project management would be more than appreciated right now.

Thanks!

getting into project management

Hello. :) I've been a project coordinator/analyst/planner for 6 years out of my last 13 in high tech, mostly on software development projects. I'm trying to find the best way to break into project management itself. Most jobs I see want a PMP, but as I'm sure you all know, you have to have been a PM for 3 years (with a degree) before you can go for that cert. I could get the CAPM, but I don't know how helpful that would be.

What skills/certs/keywords would be useful? I don't have any formal programming experience, but I could certainly get started on that. Some s/w projects I've seen want a manager with a coding background, while some specifically *don't* want a coder so they won't get sucked into coding. I could get an MBA, but that's a fair amount of money and time, and again I'm not sure if it's really needed or not. There's always moving up in a company, but many of the PM positions in Austin are contract rather than full-time.

How did you break into project management? Is knowing the PMBOK enough with my background to start applying?

Thanks for your time!

(no subject)

Hi all,
I am new to this community and I thought I would introduce myself. I'm living in Germany, struggeling along as the "Head of PM" in a small company with virtually no other PM than myself. I'd be interested if anyone else here ever tried to set up a project maangement office or is working in one.
I hope this can be a place for discussion and knowledge exchange. :-)
