little blue dog

welcome!

OK, here we are.

Speaking for myself here ...

The comparisons between this com and damnportlanders are inevitable, but I'm not looking at this com to be a replacement for anything -- I'm fairly certain I speak for Ryan, Mike, and Jwo when I say this (correct me if I'm wrong). So I don't see it as a matter of allegiance, competition, politics, exclusivity, or what-have-you. It's a matter of alternatives.

I don't even know if the readership of a Portland-centric group is robust enough to sustain more than one com, but here's our go at it. If it lasts, then I think it's more due to the members than anything else (it is a "community" after all). However, I hope you're not coming here expecting that any of the "problems" you see at DP are going to be solved by our approach. You'll stay if the com takes on a personality that you like, and you'll be responsible for contributing to, establishing, and maintaining that personality.

I'd personally like that personality to helpful, friendly, mature, quirky, and interesting ... in short, a lot of what made (and still makes) damnportlanders such a cool group to read.

I guess the main difference we're going for here (again, speaking for myself) is how to handle personal conflicts between users. I don't believe that anyone can come up with a system of rules that simultaneously encourages free expression while being sensitive to everyone's, er ... sensitivities. But I think that expression comes first. Actually, I think respect comes first, and common sense.

That being said, there are several ways of dealing with content/expression you don't like: scroll past the post, suppress images, suppress user icons, even selectively block certain users' entries (I think). You're welcome to bug one of us if you want to, but we're probably going to be more helpful if it's evident you've tried to work things out on your own. We've asked everyone to be respectful in here, so that means using a cut if you think the circumstances call for it (for whatever reason: posting a spoiler, posting a ton of images, posting something controversial, yadda yadda), and it's probably never a bad idea to err on the side of being overcautious. Just, you know, be friendly.

So, there we go. Welcome. Please play nice, and share your toys.
