One of my favorite books is Bridge to Terabithia. I've watched Beaches more times than is probably healthy. When writing for my first fandom, I managed to write at least one story where one of each character died.

I like angst.

For a long time, I just thought it was a particular spot that appealed to me, and I rolled with it. I joined fandom while my father was in hospice care, so my slight obsession with death made sense.

The older I get, the more sense my attraction to these types of stories makes. It's not necessarily the angst that attracts me, it's the emotional response it gives me.

(Side note: I also love cracky stories. The more ridiculous, the better for me. So I suppose I like extremes.)

I'm an introvert with social anxiety and depression. I have a hard time expressing feelings unless they are super intense. When I get angry, I'm the Hulk. When I'm frustrated, I cry.

When I look for fiction, I'm immediately attracted to something that is going to give me catharsis.

I don't need these things to be alive, I just need them to actually live.

I am also an introvert who suffers with anxiety and subsequent depression. Books were always my solace, especially when I was younger (the more cathartic, the better).

Fiction is important :) I'm a hurt/comfort junkie and I also read/write angst sometimes as well as crack fic and other genres. Different times you need different things and fiction offers all of them.

It's interesting to study what compels our intrigue.

This was a very interesting post which made me think about the confluence of angst, catharsis, and personality types, which got me thinking about the various meanings/uses of angst. That's a lot of thinking from one entry, and I thank you for it! Very well done!

I, too, am an introvert with anxiety and depression. Reading was always my escape. I'm actually pretty sure Bridge to Terabithia was the first book I read where a main character died. After that, I was hooked on sad, dark stories.

Bridge to Terabithia is a great book! I got to meet Catherine Patterson many years ago. It was really fun. I think your attraction to these types of books is similar to my attraction to depressing music! Smile.
