I mean, yeah, valid! but but but I also want to add on the fact that lotr AGGRESSIVELY rejects the “grimdark” and “gritty” settings that is so prevalent in fantasy (and also in general) right now, because I physically can not shut up about it

It is hope and love and compassion that saves each character individually, and because of that, the world. Frodo fails in the end, but his acts of compassion from earlier in the story save the day. And even as the world is saved, it is acknowledged that Frodo failed—without judgement, without blame. He fails, and he is still loved.

And like what can happen in the real world, he is still irrevocably changed by his trauma. But there is still hope—he has to leave, but he leaves with the promise of healing, and the promise that his ever-faithful Sam will follow.

Aragorn, Boromir, Frodo, Sam; each and every one of the characters are driven by their love of the people around them and their hope for the future. They cling to that love and hope throughout their trials, and that bears them through.

Of course people are watching it for comfort!!!! Lotr is eternally consistent in its promise, which Sam articulates so clearly in The Two Towers: “Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer.”

Things are dark and awful and terrible, but it will not be that way forever. That is the promise of LOTR. A promise of hope, and the reminder that it is love and compassion—for our friends, for our families, for the strangers we’ve never even met—that will save us in the end.

I just want to add, it’s not just that The Lord of the Rings rejects grimdark and gritty fantasy - The Lord of the Rings is the original. Grimdark is what you get when you reject the bright half of the eucatastrophe.

you'll read book grace describing his own apartment and then you read him describing his classroom and you want to strangle him. you just want to strangle him a little bit

cowardsexual

single man's meal in a single man's apartment. small, tidy (empty). a tv, a microwave, a picture of the san francisco skyline that probably came with the place. nothing else of note. but step one foot in his memory of the classroom he's worked in every day for years and he still gloats about it. look, look! the Jacob's ladder in the corner that he keeps unplugged. there, an entire collection of animals preserved in formaldehyde—did he preserve the fake egg and spaghetti jar in that tidy little kitchen he doesn't use? no i bet that was at school also, with the one single class that would never fall for his favourite prank. the reward system with the beanbags. and my favourite, and i have to quote this one: "And gracing the center of the ceiling was my pride and joy—a huge mobile that was a model of the solar system. Jupiter was the size of a basketball, while wee Mercury was as small as a marble."

san francisco skyline in his fucking san francisco apartment.

he loved those kids. he loved his job. he loved teaching so much that that love spilled out of him like water, it made him barge into an FBI guarded laboratory and demand the most powerful woman in the world give him a second chance to help. but god forbid the love overstayed its welcome. god forbid he couldn't toe it off like a pair of wet boots at the front door. wouldn't want to drag that into his pristine fucking empty apartment ryland grace youuuu fucking cowardddd

15 Romantic Actions to Use Instead of a Kiss

1. Lacing Fingers Together

Not just holding hands, actually interlacing them. It's a small physical detail that reads as far more deliberate and possessive than a loose hand-hold.

2. Nuzzling Into Their Neck or Hair

Face pressed in, breathing them in for a second. Works especially well in a quiet moment after something stressful, when a character needs to physically ground themselves in the other person.

3. A Gentle Bite or Nip

Lip, shoulder, ear, wherever fits the scene. Playful if the tone's light, charged if it's not.

4. Massaging Their Hands or Shoulders

Practical and intimate at the same time. Great for a character who shows affection through action instead of words, since this lets them do something instead of saying it.

5. Tracing Idle Patterns on Their Skin

Fingertips moving without any real purpose, along an arm, a palm, a shoulder. It signals comfort and closeness better than almost anything verbal could.

6. Running Fingers Through Their Hair

This is the absent-minded kind of thing a character does without fully realizing it. Tip: this one's especially good for a scene where someone's comforting the other after a nightmare or a bad day.

7. Gripping Their Waist or Hip to Pull Them Closer

Direct, a little urgent, and it closes distance fast in a way that reads as wanting rather than just affectionate. Could also substitute with belts, capes/cloaks, pockets, ties, collars and more.

8. Trailing Fingertips Down an Arm or Spine

The key is to make this deliberately slow. This is a good one for tension-building specifically, since the anticipation of where the hand's going matters more than the touch itself.

9. Scratching Nails Lightly Down Their Back or Scalp

Small, physical, and surprisingly underused given how much sensory detail it gives you to work with.

10. Pressing a Palm Flat Against Their Chest

Feeling the heartbeat under their hand, whether from adrenaline or nerves. It's a small gesture that gives you a built-in excuse to describe how fast someone's heart is racing. Also works with the wrist or side of the neck for a more possessive scene.

11. Brushing a Thumb Across Their Cheekbone

Slow and deliberate, usually paired with a character just looking at the other for a beat too long.

12. Wiping Something Off Their Face

Blood, dirt, tears, doesn't matter. The act of gently cleaning someone up says care in a way dialogue rarely manages.

13. Tucking Hair Behind Their Ear

Small, almost automatic, and very cute if the character doing it doesn't even seem to notice they're doing it. Similar actions would be holding back their open hair, or tying/braiding their hair when it keeps getting in the way.

14. Holding Their Face Without Kissing Them

The almost-kiss that doesn't happen. Use this when you want the reader leaning forward in their seat, desperate for something that isn't coming yet. Pair it with their foreheads resting against each other, their eyes fluttering shut as they just breathe each other in. Works pretty well for goodbyes, or if they’re trying to steal a moment in public without too much PDA.

15. Holding Eye Contact a Beat Too Long

The simplest one on this list and still one of the hardest to write well. It's all in the extra second that shouldn't be there but is.

I get you can change characters to be whatever you want in your fanfic. You can turn a shy character into a huge flirt, you can make a more dominant character into a submissive one. You can change gender and sexuality and universes altogether. In my opinion, though, you should try to base the changed character on their original character and not jump the shark entirely,

which is why I'm glad you came to this Tumblr Ted Talk and let me rant about how very upset it makes me when people characterize Simon as less intelligent than he is. Simon can read, he navigated a leaking death trap through blood filled chambers based on math and x rays. He has emotional intelligence, too. He feels his feelings and is vulnerable and has bursts of anger but is also sorry for being harsh and apologizes to inanimate objects. Yes, there may be knowledge he didn't have access to but he absolutely has the ability to grasp complex ideas and understand them quickly.

deisy au Simon is so smart you guys! like obviously he’s not a scientist but he’s not stupid! there’s literally a line in Iron Lung about how he can read! he didn’t ignore the manual because he couldn’t read he ignored it because he DIDN’T WANT TO
