Plastic bag fees
I fully support all environmental efforts and I do all I can to help the environment.
I like the idea of paying for plastic bags if I forget to bring my own bags.
What I have never liked is how the city of Toronto is managing it’s plastic bag fees:
1) very few retailers are offering me alternatives to plastic bags. Yes most grocery stores have the re-usable bags but very few other places offer alternatives.
2) The city of Toronto has left it up to the retailers to decide where the 5cent fee for a plastic bag goes. The retailer can pocket the money, they can donate it to environmental causes, they can put the money into any other cause, they can put the money into alternative bags, essentially they can do whatever their hearts desire.
Yes reducing the use of plastic bags is great for the environment but shouldn’t the money actually go back into environmental efforts in communities?
