Sports Night – 4 Recs

1. The Couch Trip (or Sofa So Good) by hyperfocused - Dan/Casey – This is a lovely ficlet where Dan naps after his therapy sessions and Casey frets and wishes that he could just open up. I love the ending – it’s so typically Casey. Sometimes Casey thinks about Dan on the couch. Open and vulnerable and truly himself in a way he maybe never has let himself be with Casey.

2. Like Papelbon by lordessrenegade - Dan/Casey – Four times that Dan saved Casey’s ass and one time he mocked him about it. It runs from pre-series to show end and I love the development of their history/relationship. And her banter for these boys is so perfect. Casey had found that the worst thing about working in the sports industry was the people in the sports industry.

3. Darkness Follows (Wages of Sin remix) by phoebesmum - Dan/Casey [PG-13] – Casey has an exit strategy. This is sad and dark, but really wonderful. I love the language used in this as Casey battles with his feelings and what will come of them. History repeats itself; we're doomed by character and circumstance to re-enact the same events over and over, following in our own footsteps, our words only echoes of earlier words grown cold and stale with use.

4. Four Ways Dan Rydell Didn’t Become a Father (and One He Did) by torchthisnow - Dan/Various Characters, [R] – There are quite a few different pairings in this, some that I wouldn’t normally enjoy, but it works for this fic. I truly enjoyed this and the end was just made of happy. “But I’ve never been to Spain,” is all Dan says, staring at Dr. Adler in disbelief. He can’t blink. He can’t even breathe. He’s sure any second, Casey’s going to pop out from under the desk and yell “Gotcha! That’s what happens when you puke in my car twice in one week.”

Heroes – 7 Recs

1. def•i•ni•tion by hackthis - Heroes, Post .07%, Nathan/Peter – I loved this look at Nathan and how he is defined by Peter, how much Peter matters to him. So good. Nathan is a father and a husband and a potential congressman. Nathan is in love with his wife and in love with his life, and today, when his younger brother died, all of it ceased to matter.

2. For the Dying of the Day by mandysbitch - Nathan/Peter [NC-17] – Nathan has a plan to save the world and Peter can’t let him do it – hotness ensues. I love the Nathan here, but more than that, I love a Peter with the upperhand. And it’s an interesting way to get all Nathan’s fears out without making him out of character. Peter drops to his knees and wraps the hose around Nathan’s ankle. “I know what Linderman told you,” Peter says. “And I know you pretended to go along with him, making out like the election was all you cared about. You wanted to fool Linderman, but you wanted to fool me too.” Peter looks up and smiles at Nathan, nodding at the bonds around Nathan’s wrists. “I guess you thought something like this would happen if I found out.”

3. In the Confusion and the Aftermath by lunarknightz - Post Company Man - Zach thinks about Claire and tries to figure out where she really is. I love the Zach voice here and how he holds out hope that he’ll see Claire again. It’s funny, for years they had been living parallel lives, never really interacting more than a chance encounter in the hallways at school, or at Wal-Mart. But she was always there, like background music in the story of his life. And now that she’s gone, the silence is deafening.

4. Speed Dial # 2 by hackthis - Post Landslide, Peter/Nathan, [PG] – Sometimes Peter misses Nathan so much that he calls the campaign hotline number. I loved this. Short, perfectly in tune to the characters, and the Peter voice is wonderful. It starts out by accident, like these things always do. Peter and Nathan aren't an accident -- well, Peter has his suspicions about his own birth based on their age gap -- but that's not what this is about.

5. Here And Somewhere Else (End of the World Remix Arranged For Clockwork Figures) by apocalypsos - Heroes, Post Fallout, Nathan/Peter [NC-17] – Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Nathan tries to hold Peter together. I love the Nathan voice here, from beginning to end. It’s so perfect for him. How scary he can be, but it’s usually because he’s trying to protect somone he loves. Nathan doesn’t have nightmares. He rarely even dreams, too busy savoring the sleep he can manage to cram into his busy schedule. When he stretches out in bed and closes his eyes the world goes black. Nothing’s there.

6. Five Times Nathan Petrelli Crashed Down to Earth by yahtzee63 - Post How to Stop an Exploding Man, Nathan Gen [PG] – This is just a brilliant look at Nathan as a character through five different moments in his life up to the finale of season one. I simply adore the Nathan in this story and the things that truly make him tick, mostly coming down to his family. Nathan didn't think it was such a great secret. He was 12, an age at which he had felt himself safe from younger siblings. When he was very small, he remembered wishing for a baby brother or sister, even asking for one; this always made his parents laugh, as though he'd told a joke.

7. A Brand New Set of Wings by hackthis - Post How to Stop an Exploding Man, Peter & Nathan [PG] - Peter has always needed Nathan and he’s not sure saving the city is worth it to lose his brother. I love the set up for this story and the Peter voice and how much the reader sees that Nathan loves Peter in just his small actions. Claire doesn't understand. Claude didn't understand either. Neither did Simone, or their father, or their mother, or anyone else who has ever seen them together. No one has ever understood -- but the fact of the matter is that Peter needs Nathan. Whether it's to wipe blood and bone fragments from his face, or to prop him up when no one else will, or to break his heart (yet again) Peter has always needed his brother.

Multifandom – 10 Recs

1. Black and White and Sharp All Over by fox1013 - Brothers & Sisters [PG] – This is a great look at Rebecca and her trying to take the life she always knew and match it up with her identity within the Walker family. I’m not sure how I feel about her character at the moment, but this piece really gives her some depth and makes me feel for her. The first week she stays at the Walkers', when everyone else is busy, she goes to their attic, and finds their autobiographies, because it's like a law that every second grader in the country since the dawn of time has had to do this project. And because they're the Walkers, they haven't given anything away. All five autobiographies are there- scattered around the attic, but definitely there.

2. Drown Out the Clamor of Silence by shealynn88 - BtVS/Tru Calling, Faith/Harrison [R] – This is incredibly and wonderfully dark and twisted as Harrison mourns for his sister and Faith looks to get her kicks. The voices are wonderful, especially Faith. Mary's expecting him. She's probably waiting at a table at Pascarinni's, drinking too much wine—he should be with her, but he can't do it. He can't pretend that they're fine, and he can't talk about the people they've lost like he's over it. His life has gone to hell since Tru died, and he can't just smile and make small talk. Not today.

3. The Best Laid Plans by Lotamoxie – Charmed [PG-13] – In this longer fic (12 chapters), it’s baby Chris’s wiccaning and of course things have to go crazy with Piper developing a new power, demons looking for big Chris, and Piper discovering the truth about big Chris’s fate. There really isn’t enough good Charmed fic out there for my liking and this one deals with the aftermath of his death in a way the show never did. I will warn that it could use a line-by-line beta, but it's nothing I couldn't get passed. "It's okay, sweetie. Mommy's here. You're okay." Piper tried to calm her youngest son with her voice, but it wasn't working. Chris just continued to cry inconsolably. She knew the feeling; she felt like crying herself. This was not the way this day was supposed to go. She had a lot of plans for today, and they didn't include hanging around the manor.

4. Five First Kisses by zeplum - The Class, Kat/Ethan [not rated] – It’s not quite a fic, but I love it. And it’s so perfectly Kat & Ethan and the different ways they could end up kissing. This is the Ethan from The Notes (Lena proclaimed the capitalization within days of Kat's initial discovery), the one that Kat had secretly been thinking about for months now.

5. Intimidation by blueraccoon - NCIS, Gibbs/DiNozzo – This is the first in a series of eight stories in the Intimidation Factor Series, which follows Gibbs & DiNozzo from finally giving into their attraction and takes us along the bumpy ride of couplehood. I love the voices and the relationship between the two of them…and it’s really hot at parts. In the end, it didn't really matter who had started it. He'd never intended for it to happen. Never thought--but as with so much else, it was the lack of thinking that had gotten him into this.

6. Big Shoulders by dancinbutterfly - Studio 60, Matt/Danny [R] – I stumbled upon this story via the Feedback Challenge and really enjoyed it. I love the look at Matt and Danny’s friendship and how they dealt with Danny’s addiction. I will warn that while this works so well as a friendship story, the relationship part seems to come on all of a sudden. Overall, great read though. His mind took some very selfish and morbid directions while he waited to hear if his best friend was ever going to wake up from the overdose he’d worked himself into. He wondered if he’d stop being able to be funny if he had to go in and hear the good doctors tell him that Danny was dead. He wondered if he’d get to keep some of Danny’s stuff or if his mom would come and box everything up and take it all away so it would be like Danny had never even existed in his life.

7. Five Times Harrison Saved Tru by shay_renoylds - Tru Calling, [Not rated] – A short five times ficlet about the ways that Harrison has come through for Tru. It rocks. She almost laughed as he looked up at her, glaring challengingly, and started bitching about how crappy drivers were in the town.

8. Beach Blanket Bingo by larah33 - Veronica Mars, Mac/Dick [R] – I loved the voices in this story and the way that Mac/Dick come together more out of common loss than anything else. Wonderful. Mac shouldn't have had that third beer. What she should have done was told Veronica she was sick, then stayed back in her dorm room where she would have been safe from beach bums. But she had always had a hard time playing it safe. "Well, well, well. If it isn't Ghost Girl." A familiar drawl floated out of the dark.

9. Broken Pieces by dancinbutterfly - Veronica Mars, Dick/Logan [R] – Set after the season two finale, Dick tries to make sense of what happened and Logan attempts to be a friend for him. It’s really good stuff. Dick’s not a complicated guy. Logan’s known this for years and accepted him anyway. Liked him that way even. Dick’s shallow but he’s always been a straight shooter about it. But in the last 48 hours, Dick’s become a lot more complex.

10. Faraway & Surfacing by teenwitch77 - The West Wing, Post Transition, Josh/Donna, [PG] – These are two short ficlets that are just a nice look at Josh and Donna as a couple. I love happy little pieces. The comforting lull of sleep was more than a little unfamiliar, and he rolled on his side, reminding himself that he was allowed to enjoy it. Savour the pull. He rubbed at his cheek, leisurely opening his eyes, and glanced at the woman lying across from him.
