My favorite tree

This beech tree was growing in my parents back yard even before the house was built 40 years ago. I have known this tree almost since birth and lived for many many years with it right outside my bedroom window. It has been home to squirrels, owls, and countless other birds. Several years ago my parents had some trees taken down in their backyard....but not this one. This one is SPECIAL. I took some pictures of it when I visited my parents on my birthday a week and a half ago.

One of my favorite things about beech trees (besides the spiky little triangular-prism nuts) is the way you can find faces on the trunks.

Major Oak in Sherwood Forest.

And yes Sherwood Forest does exist... There are over 500 Oak trees in Sherwood Forest that are over 900 years old. The Major Oak is the most famous one of them all because of the legend of Robin Hood. However, the tree isn't old enough, and would not have been around when Robin was supposed to be...

I have a bunch more photos to post of old Oaks, but I can't get photobucket to save them when I rotate them...

lone tree in open field

[crossposted from cottage renovations 15_the_circle]

this tree is located in an open field to the East of the Grove.  the tract in which it is located is slated for development and all the site plans I've seen show the spot where it stands as cleared and built upon.

its best hope is for the housing sector to remain in the tank, but even that will provide only a temporary stay of execution.  even so, a short term is better than none and we will continue to appreciate it for however long it may remain.

these leaves are submerged in a birdbath whose surface, rippled by arriving raindrops, reflects wet branches and grey skies overhead.
