So I decided to read this article. I do think it's worth reading if you know a way past the paywall. It's called "The Wrong Kind of American" by Julia Curlee.

I don't like the CIA. I don't necessarily agree with her decision to keep working for them for as long as she could, but it's an interesting look into how queer people are being systematically erased in the federal government right now.

The bit about Mike Pence was a bit odd but her point seemed to be that when she was assigned to his personal staff he at the very least had the bare minimum respect for her, which is a low bar in my opinion but when you work for a conservative government, your mental bar for how you're treated might be a bit low.

I do respect how she refused until the very end to go back into the closet. Even if you hate the CIA, it seems like she and a lot of other openly queer employees have been working to make the federal government a more inclusive place to work for a long time and the current administration just reversed all of that in less than three months. She brought up at the end having to choose between her integrity and keeping her family's health insurance, which I imagine is a decision that a lot of people have had to make unfortunately.

Again, this article is one of those things that's a bit weird and maybe I don't understand all of the decisions that the author has made but it at the very least has some interesting insights into what's going on over there. They seem to be losing a lot of institutional knowledge, which is in fact likely a threat to national security.

To reiterate in case it isn't clear, I don't think you should work for the CIA or that the CIA is good. Since I know this website's reading comprehension is terrible.

????? getting off the motorway & the bus driver starts SHOUTING “ohhh noo! no no no no!!” me and the other passengers looking about in fear but can see no apparent danger. then the bus driver goes (shouting loudly over the engine noise and traffic so we can hwar in the back) “WHEW! that could’ve been real bad. that could’ve been so bad. i really thought we were doomed.” with no explanation.

I can only assume that the bus driver can see spirits and ghosts and such and saw a gigantic other world beast about to consume us that was waylaid at the last moment by another larger more terrifying beast that eats fellow beasts and not buses.

I'm sorry, is this... Is this implying there's no DYE in that rug? All raw wool in its natural colours? She fucking bred the sheep to get the colours she wanted over the course of ten years!? Holy shit.

Edit: this has gotten a huge amount of traction (fibrearts tumblr is a, uh, tight-knit community it seems!) so I am adding this note to state that I checked Lola Cody's website and can confirm: There is no dye in her work. She uses exclusively hand-spun Churro wool sheared from her home-raised sheep flock. It's all natural colours!

Anonymous asked:

What exactly are barefoot shoes? Are they the ones with toes?

what-even-is-thiss answered:

No, they’re shoes with flat and flexible soles and a really wide toe box. They mimic the experience of walking barefoot while still giving your feet protection from the elements.

Traditional shoes unnaturally cramp your toes together and atrophy some of the muscles in your feet because they support your feet too much and you never use some of those muscles. That’s why you need to work on strengthening your feet and slowly work your way up to wearing barefoot shoes full time. You need to make your muscles strong again to avoid an overuse injury.

If you wear barefoot shoes or just don’t wear shoes at all for a long time you might notice your toes spreading apart. People who have never worn traditional shoes also tend to have toes that are naturally more spread out. It’s not really natural for most people’s toes to be crowded together but wearing traditional shoes all of the time forces them into that shape. Since I’ve started wearing barefoot shoes full time I’ve noticed that my toes have developed a natural gap in between them and my feet physically don’t fit as well inside of traditional shoes anymore.

using "what were YOU doing at the devils sacrament" to mean "yeah i made an embarrassing reference but you understood it which is also embarrassing" is very funny to me

computationalcalculator

my favorite part is that absolutely nobody says this except here. so if you use it in public, it's a dead giveaway that you spent the last ten years on tumblr. but then again, they recognized it, which means they were at the devil's sacrament

I tested this theory in the wild the other day at work. I was on a call with my department lead and a few other folks and I replied to an email the DL had sent me, thinking that, because he was on this call, he wouldn't notice when I sent it and would not catch me multitasking.

However, he replied to said email within five minutes, asking a question that required an answer. So I answered and was like "Also, I was going to apologize for answering emails during this call, but I see we're both here at the Devil's Sacrament, so I don't think an apology is necessary."

I watched him read that on screen and try not to laugh. And then at the end of the call as everyone started saying goodbye, he goes, "Hey, MJ, I meant to tell you. I like your shoelaces."

And I looked straight into my camera, stone cold serious, and said, "Thanks. I stole them from the president."

And the rest of the team was like, "What...the fuck...?" before he abruptly ended the call for everyone.

So now my DL and I know this about each other. He could be any one of us.

At a certain point, the appropriate response to "What were you doing at the devil's sacrament" becomes "stealing shoelaces from the president."
