I came to Cambridge in 1984. I’m married with two daughters, and work as a developer with a local software company. I love living in Cambridge because of its unique, well, Cambridgeness. This blog is mainly about Cambridge local issues, with a bit of data visualization thrown in.
What an absolutely excellent site. Incredible work and very informative. Thank you so much.
Fantastic work done about the Library. Well done!!
Dear Phil
Might you, or Colin, perhaps like to be so kind as to let me have a spreadsheet of the parties of Cambridge-MPs, Cambridge-City-majorities, and Westminster-hoc-majorities by year for 100 years or so?
I’m an economist (of sorts) and have worked on time series analyses.
Best wishes

Hi Mark,
I’m afraid I don’t have the data in spreadsheet form, or at least if I did I can’t find it right now; it’s all on Colin’s website at http://www.cambridgeelections.org.uk/parly.htm, or indeed Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cambridge_(UK_Parliament_constituency)), but some editing is needed to get it into a spreadsheet.
Best wishes

Hi Phil
Many thanks for your kind reply.
Great website.

Phil, I see Bristol voted to do away with the role of elected mayor. Would it be possible to have a similar referendum in our neck of the woods?

Hi Mark, it is possible to abolish some types of elected mayor by referendum, but as I understand it this doesn’t apply to combined authorities. In any case the government’s local government reorganisation plans are heavily based on having combined authorities with elected mayors, so I don’t think there’s much prospect of getting rid of them.
Thanks for your thoughts. Wh
