One of Guattari's most important conceptual contributions is his notion of transversality. This complex notion responds to the very concrete problem that, when we oppose certain power formations, we tend to reproduce these same power formations. This article proposes an examination of Guattari's concept of transversality through five of its aspects, which will be related to the various problematics they respond to. The aim is to show how power formations operate and how transversality responds to them, and (...) also to highlight the primordial importance of practical and political issues to Guattari's conceptual work. As we will see, Guattari conceived of transversality in relation to the Leninist cut; it thus is linked to democratic centralism and to the subject-group. Transversality is also linked to enunciation and autopoiesis; it is characterised by Guattari as transmonadic and transitive. Transversal Posthumanities emerge within the posthuman convergence of posthumanism and postanthropocentrism. Environmental, medical, and digital humanities reposition academic practice towards advanced technologies and climate change issues. A neomaterialist theoretical framework will help distinguish different kinds of Posthumanities: from the profit-oriented knowledge production practices of cognitive capitalism, to community-driven, non-profit experiments with minor knowledges.

The disruptions of coronavirus disease 2019 in the year 2020 reshaped all aspects of life, including religious practices and rituals. As more religious activities shifted to digital space during the lockdown periods, there was a growing need to examine the link between religion and digital media. Using the model of the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa, this article draws on the notion of transversal rationality and concepts of rationality, cognitive, evaluative and pragmatic to posit that COVID-19 has configured traditional (...) missional and liturgical spaces in ways that locate the agency of the marginalised at the centre. The article highlights how COVID-19 configured Christian mission as it disrupted power dynamics through religious digital spaces, which emerged as a new way of reimaging a missional church. These new digital spaces mediate between interaction and ‘telepresence’, embodied in the representations of the sacred available through online religious systems in practices where users are no longer ordinary believers – but religious participants who have power and freedom to choose. Although this is not a new phenomenon, the article concludes that such spaces created by COVID-19 shifts in power dynamics present opportunities for ordinary members to reinvent new meanings on what it means to be present or absent, to name, narrate and reinterpret the divine and forge new meanings towards participating in the mission of God.Contribution: Although this is not a new phenomenon, this article represents a systematic and practical reflection within a paradigm in which the intersection of philosophy, religious studies, social sciences, humanities and natural sciences generate an interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary contested discourse. This paper advances the concept of transversality by drawing philosophical insights from Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Calvin O. Schrag, and the Martinicuan francophone Edouard Glissant. By so doing, it attempts to deconstruct the notion of universality in modern Western philosophy. It begins with a critique of the notion of Eurocentric universality which is founded on the fallacious premise that what is particular in the West is made universal, whereas whereas what is particular in the non-West remains particular forever. Eurocentric Universality has (...) no place in the globalization of the multicultural world. It simply ignores the reality of interlacing of multiple life-worlds. The concept of transversality, whose icon is the Maitreyan Middle Way, is proposed to replace universality. It not only reduced ethnocentric particularism but also fosters a hybridity that in fact dissolves the binary opposition between particularism and universalism. Beginning with a displacement of process and relational philosophy, this paper takes up the question of how expressive life comes to be fixated and organized around the figure of the person tracing the ontogenesis of this metaphysical and historical rigidification into identity, ownership, and self-possession, while following how expression continues to move transversally in fugitive modes of existence. This rigidification takes philosophical form in the organization of experience and affect, later consolidated in transcendental philosophy, where the event of thought is (...) enclosed within the figure that claims to think it. The movement of duration is thereby divided and its heterogeneous continuity represented into discrete states, affect is privatized and relational processes are translated into an interiority. The paper follows how a field of relations articulates itself where experience cannot be said to belong to anyone. Building on Alfred North Whitehead, Gilles Deleuze, Gilbert Simondon, Henri Bergson, and Brian Massumi expression is approached as the eventual articulation of a milieu: a differentiation of relations across bodies and temporalities prior to their capture in identity. Individuation is understood as a modulation of relations across preindividual tensions and transindividual resonances rather than the activity of a pre-existing subject. Transversality here designates this mode of composition where heterogeneous elements enter into attunement while an ecology of expression names the distributed field of modes through which experience takes form. The personal emerges as a stratum that channels expressive movement into regimes of attribution and ownership. What is at issue is a wider ontological rigidity as the reduction of differential movement into fixed form and personal property. This arrangement inherited in personhood as a diagram organizing experience interiority and accountability remains inseparable from the exclusions that determine who may appear as a subject. Black studies and abolitionist thought, particularly Fred Moten’s work, intensify this problem by approaching fugitivity through paraontology as modes of existence that expose the limits of personhood from within as practices that unsettle modes of personal attribution and reopen relational life. Phenomenology, Transversality, and World Philosophy explores the concept of world philosophy (Weltphilosophie) to take into account the reality of today’s multicultural and globalizing world, as well as the constructive roles played by phenomenology and transversality.

What do we mean when we describe the history of the Caribbean as traumatic? Is it possible to use the term ‘trauma’ here in a more technical sense, or should we give it the less strict connotation of an extreme form of an event in which the past no longer stays just in the past and the future never ceases to demand something from the present? In this paper I analyze the image of the abyss, used by Édouard Glissant to (...) evoke poetically one of the beginnings of the Caribbean, as leading to a paradox on the attitude toward history: Caribbean communities have been burdened with a non-history that feels, at the same time, like too much history. I show that this image resembles the paradoxical structure of trauma developed in the works of Cathy Caruth, according to whom trauma is a paradoxical structure of experience in which the subject (or a community) is painfully possessed by an image that they have barely perceived and that is so minimal that it cannot be controlled. However, I argue, there are limits to this resemblance. I focus on the question whether the (traumatic) paradox is escapable in this region of the world, that is, whether Caribbean communities can be de-traumatized, and what are the connections of this possibility with the question, central to Glissant, of decolonization. In order to answer these questions, I analyze a central feature of the Caribbean history according to Glissant, transversality, to show in what way the paradox of history can be loosened. (shrink)

The article addresses the potential and limitations of transversality and its relationship to the radical and populist left by analysing the theoretical reflections and political practices of the Spanish party, Podemos. Transversality, as developed by Podemos, seeks to shape a new political space by capturing societal pluralism and overcoming the marginalisation traditionally assigned to the radical left. Although it aspires to broaden the leftist project by including civil society and other actors, it ultimately becomes a tool for legitimising (...) or delegitimising internal positions within the party, thereby reinforcing an incompatible divide between radicals and moderates. The article distinguishes between “core transversality” to refer to the attempt to move beyond left-right political identification and “peripheral transversality” to include other types of identities such as nationalism and feminism. Although their use has been proposed for several decades as a fundamental part of mental health recovery, in recent years there has been an increasing push to integrate mutual aid groups (MAGs) into health services. While this integration could strengthen them, it risks transforming MAGs from alternatives to mere complements to psychiatric services. This article argues that the integration of mutual aid into formal health systems must be approached with caution, ensuring that such inclusion does not neutralize their transformative potential, (...) but rather reorients care systems toward ontological pluralism, justice and epistemic dignity. To answer this question, a dialogue is proposed between theory and several programs where MAGs were the central strategy. Transversalizing care implies recognizing that different forms of healing arise from distinct worlds, logics, and ways of experiencing suffering. Without this shift, MAGs risk being neutralized, depoliticized, and absorbed by recovery systems that do not always respond to diverse forms of psychosocial suffering. The question is not how peer support can be integrated into existing mental health systems, but how these same systems can support the radical ontological shift that MAGs demand. Mechanisms are proposed to integrate these strategies into a broader care system, preserving their autonomy and managing risks of co-optation. (shrink)

“Transversality” refers to an interdisciplinary ethos that navigates between conceptual and institutional boundaries without arriving at a holistic synthesis. This ethos utilizes knowledge from many fields but never presumes a new kind of masterful expertise. Transversality has become a keyword for philosophical and practical efforts for approaching the multifarious dimensions of the climate crisis in Brazilian environmental institutions. This chapter explores the history and use of transversality in Brazil as a case study for non-academic Latin American contributions (...) to contemporary STS theory. Drawing on archival research and ethnographic observation with Brazilian climate analysts, it demonstrates that the continually emerging transversal ethos offers a unique response to the challenges of global climate governance. It is therefore an opportunity to both examine the limitations and potential of an appropriated concept as well as a Latin American conceptual innovation. (shrink)

In this article I seek to contribute to ongoing conversations on revolutionary organization and counterpower. First, through a direct reading of Lenin I set forth a concept of counterpower with three constituent elements: power from below; what I call “transitional institutions;” and what I describe as “effective integration,” or the consolidation of revolutionary institutions. I then show how Félix Guattari’s concepts of institutional analysis and “transversality” advance a reconception of transitional institutions that reconfigures counterpower by multiplying and intensifying revolutionary (...) desire. Finally, I argue Verónica Gago’s account of transversal, feminist counterpower illustrates the contemporary significance of revolutionary transitional institutions while also raising concerns about effective integration. I conclude suggesting that contemporary counterrevolutionary violence indicates a need to revisit the problem of unity. (shrink)

Mestizaje, a Latin American heritage focusing on the mutual intersection and transformation of the European and indigenous peoples in the Americas has had two predominant interpretative paradigms. South of the U.S.-Mexico border, both ruling elites and scholars have frequently used mestizaje to justify a mixing of European, indigenous, African, and other peoples that nevertheless have the European culture ascendant. Conversely, in the U.S. Latino heritage north of the U.S.-Mexico border, the conquest of the U.S. Southwest by predominantly European-American settlers has (...) led many U.S. Latino scholars to render mestizaje as resistance and as a way of seeking agency against this hegemony.Given that that these competing mestizaje paradigms respectively objectify the oppressed and in turn the oppressor, this article suggests that this conceptual impasse is a subset of the ongoing debate in philosophy and political theory between universal schemes that have little use for particular perspectives, and separatist schemes that are leery of universal narratives. Building upon Merleau-Ponty’s notion of a lateral universal, the article reviews how the transversal approach articulating by Fred Dallmayr, Hwa Yol Jung, and Calvin Schrag elicits a unity-in-diversity that seeks understandings that are neither universally transparent nor particularly relativist. The article then concludes by reviewing how the transversal mestizaje in works of Jacques Audinet, Virgil Elizondo, and Jorge Gracia elicits the possibility of lateral, egalitarian intersections between diverse peoples and cultures. This view of culture as a "cutting across" of boundaries, which can be found in many forms throughout his work, achieves a special significance for the study of subjectification in his discussion of "Spatial Practices" that comprises the third section of The Practice of Everyday Life. In an important essay on Certeau's theory of space, Ian Buchanan argues that "our understanding of culture must commence with an understanding of the formation of the subject," and that the latter is addressed by Certeau through his essays on space [129-30]. Following this assertion, we want to argue that Certeau's analyses of spatial practices in Heterologies, "The Gaze: Nicholas of Cusa," and The Practice of Everyday Life [particularly the chapter "Walking in the City" 91-110], outline a theory that describes subjectivity as what amounts to, as Certeau puts it in Culture in the Plural, "a composition of places and the innovation that modifies it by dint of moving and cutting across them" [146]. Citing the example of the Westin Bonaventure hotel in Los Angeles, Jameson argues that "this latest mutation in space--postmodern hyperspace--has finally succeeded in transcending the capacities of the individual human body to locate itself, to organize its immediate surroundings perceptually, and cognitively to map its position in a mappable external world" [44]. Following the thread provided by his lifetime of engagement with psychosis, this article considers a number of aspects of the writings of Félix Guattari in relation to the problem of untranslatability. Contrasting Guattari's approach with the structuralist diagnostic conceptualization of psychosis in terms of foreclosure, it follows the early development of his concept of transversality and the critique of linguistics that it leads to. Turning then to a consideration of the specific privilege Guattari accords psychosis, it addresses his constructive (...) experimenting with theory as a way to rethink enunciation in terms of a semiotic ‘energetics’ that permits an effective problematization of the theoretical and practical privileges of the ‘normal’ structures of language within analysis. ABSTRACT The problem that the "posthuman" must cope with is complex: how can one embrace both anti-humanistic problematization and deconstruction of the human subject by post-structuralism and, at the same time, link the capacity of techno-science for de-humanization with the possibility for inventing posthuman subjectivity? Consideration of the posthumanization of the human must expand further from the cyborgization based on the strengthening of human individuals' capacity, and there is need of a paradigm shift for us to rethink and reconceptualize the (...) posthuman within the ontological and sociopolitical relational networking beyond the opposition of technocentric determinism and humancentric instrumentalism. Human beings were produced in the disciplinary society in the form of self-disciplined "individuals" and have been produced in the control society in the form of de-individualized "dividuals," respectively. If so, then what will the form of human beings be in the posthuman society outside or after the control society, which has yet to arrive? In this paper, pointing out the limitations of discussions on cyborgization and examining Deleuze's diagnosis of the control society based on digital technology, I argue that we can find a new possibility for posthuman subjectivity in Simondon's "transindividual relationship" complemented by Guattari's "transversality." I propose that it will be possible for posthuman society to be produced when the transindividual relationships based on the transductive operation of technological invention realizing the common natural potentiality are realized, and a high degree of transversal communication that prevents the subjugation of this collectivity is maintained. RESUMO O problema com o qual o "pós-humano" deve lidar é complexo: como alguém pode abraçar tanto a problematização e a construção anti-humanística do sujeito humano pelo pós-estruturalismo e, ao mesmo tempo, conectar a capacidade de tecnociência à desumanização com a possibilidade de inventar uma subjetividade pós-humana? Considerações sobre pós-humanização do humano devem expandir para além da ciborguezação baseada no fortalecimento da capacidade de indivíduos humanos, e existe a necessidade de uma mudança de paradigma para que possamos repensar e reconceitualizar o pós-humano dentro da rede relacional ontológica e sociopolítica trabalhando além da oposição do determinismo tecnocêntrico e do instrumentalismo humanocêntrico. Seres humanos foram produzidos na sociedade disciplinar na forma de "indivíduos" autodisciplinados e têm sido produzidos na sociedade de controle na forma de "divíduos" desindividualizados, respectivamente. Nesse caso, qual será a forma dos seres humanos na sociedade pós-humanista do lado de fora ou após a sociedade de controle, que ainda está por chegar? Neste trabalho, aponto as limitações de discussões sobre ciborguezação e examino o diagnóstico de Deleuze sobre a sociedade de controle baseada na tecnologia digital, argumento que podemos encontrar uma nova possibilidade para a subjetividade pós-humana no "relacionamento transindividual" de Simondon complementado pela "transversalidade" de Guattari. This paper charts the course of Deleuze and Foucault’s philosophical friendship or ‘block of becoming,’ showing the series of reciprocal determinations through which each philosopher’s thought develops in response to the other’s. Specifically, I will argue that the concept of transversal resistance is fundamental for the political thought of both Foucault and Deleuze, allowing us to reconstruct the basis and trajectory of a shared political theory. This concept emerges in Deleuze and Guattari’s schizo-politics, which advances the central aim of Foucault’s (...) earlier History of Madness (problematizing the exclusion of a certain intensive experience of madness; activating its potentially liberatory force) while accounting for why Foucault’s particular politics of literary transgression had failed (the becoming-commodity of art). The question then becomes one of conceiving and creating transversal forms of struggle that would respond to the problem of capitalism—a question which Deleuze poses to Foucault, and which prompts and orients the latter’s micro-political analytic of power. In turn, Foucault’s analysis of the anti-transversal operation and economico-political function of power provides the critical groundwork for a theory of transversal politics. Such an affirmative project takes form in Foucault’s late ethico-politics. (shrink)

This paper presents a systematic critique of the philosophy of the early Wittgenstein, as formulated in the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, in light of our structural-relational metaphysics. While acknowledging the importance of the Tractatus in delimiting the boundaries of meaningful language and in conceiving the world as the totality of facts, the critique is directed at its logicist foundation, the pictorial theory of language, and (in part) the atomistic conception of the world's structure. The rejection of the idea that logical form can (...) be mirrored by a figurative correspondence between proposition and state of affairs leads to the demand for a more radical metaphysical-ontological foundation, one that does not rely on representation but on what we call the necessary iteration of the condition of Being. Unlike logical atomism, which fragments reality into logically independent elementary units, structural-relational metaphysics proposes an integrated dimensional structure, grounded in the absolutely necessary logical-metaphysical condition, expressed as S(Ⓣ(φ)), in which truth is constituted by the improper identity between proposition, fact, and truth-operator. The critique shows that Wittgenstein, in conceiving logic as tautological and language as a limited representational structure, seemingly prohibits the possibility of metaphysics, but without dissolving its structural presuppositions. It is concluded that structural-relational metaphysics offers greater coherence, explanatory power, and metaphysical depth by reformulating the notions of meaning, truth, and structure not from the negative limits of the sayable, but from the absolute positivity of Being. In this paper we discuss in some depth the main theorems pertaining to Carnot’s theory of transversals, their initial reception by Servois, and the applications that Brianchon made of them to the theory of conic sections. The contributions of these authors brought the long-forgotten theorems of Desargues and Pascal fully to light, renewed the interest in synthetic geometry in France, and prepared the ground from which projective geometry later developed.

This article is based on a series of conversations with the social psychologist Miguel D. Norambuena regarding Félix Guattari's visit to Chile in 1991. The conversation deals with different events, ranging from the process of dictatorial repression in Chile with the political exile of Miguel D., experiences of intersection between Chilean revolutionary processes and the experiences of May 1968, as well as forms of production of subjectivity in the neoliberal scenario of the 1980s. Different tools for practical reflection take place (...) in this dialogue, from the collective listening that David Cooper developed on the outskirts of Paris, Guattari's seminars at his home or the visits to the La Borde clinic, Guattari's trip to Chile and the publication of the books Cartografías del deseo (1989) and El devenir de la subjetividad (1998) in Chile. La obra de Heráclito y Parménides nos resulta desconocida en su integridad. Sin embargo, pocos filósofos han sido tan comentados como ellos. Pero esta crítica –diversa y contradictoria– de los fragmentos de su Περι Φύσεως, y de su Poema, respectivamente, en vez de aclarar, ha servido para ocultar aún más sus genuinas reflexiones filosóficas, pues muchos de estos escritos se han utilizado ya sea para alabar a Heráclito o Parménides, ya sea para criticarlos y contraponerlos, o bien para justificar intereses (...) espurios. Este trabajo versa sobre las controversias del πάντα ρει, del πύρ y del λογος según el pensamiento del filósofo de Éfeso, dejando para otra ocasión las interpretaciones de la doctrina del filósofo de Elea sobre la άλήνεια y la δόγος, advirtiendo que siempre se planteará el problema de la duda respecto respecto a la autenticidad o falsedad, orden y estructura de sus fragmentos como fuente.We find the work of Heráclito and Parménides unknown in their integrity. However, few philosophers have been so commented as them. But this diverse and contradictory critic - of the fragments of their "Peri Phuseos" and of their Poem, respectively, instead of clarifying, it has been good to hide even more their genuine philosophical reflections, because many of these writings have either been used to praise Heráclito or Parménides, either to criticize them and to oppose them, or to justify spurious interests. This work turns on the controversies of the "panta rei" of the "pur" and of the logos according to the thought of the philosopher of Éfeso, leaving for another occasion the interpretations of the doctrine of the philosopher of Elea on the "alhueia" and of the "doxa", noticing that [he/she] will always think about the problem of the doubt regarding the authenticity or falsehood, order and it structures of its fragments like source. Transversality occupies a central place in Guattari's thought, appearing in his early writings on institutional analysis and on through to his final work, Chaosmosis. Transversality is thus particularly pertinent to understanding Guattari's critique of semiocapitalism and his goal of re-imagining forms of institutional subjectivisation as a way to free the unconscious from structures of lack and the desire for punishment, the very structures upon which capitalism relies for its reproduction. If there is one institution that has taken advantage (...) of semiocapitalism's ability to mask its role in the reproduction of capitalist subjectivity, however, it is the contemporary neoliberal University. This essay thus brings transversality to bear upon the question of the University in semiocapitalism, focusing on the discourses that speak in defence of the humanities. Though defences of the humanities are intended to argue for the humanities’ usefulness in contemporary society, transversality exposes such discourses as the speech of a ‘subjugated group’ whose only effect is to reinforce existing structures of lack and punishment. This paper discusses the possibility of an ethics of difference. It begins with an introduction to current poststructural and critical theories in order to show their significance for transcultural politics and ethics. Its theme is formulated in terms of the debate between the affirmation of ethical cognitivism cast in the form of universalism and the advocacy of moral skepticism in the mode of communitarianism. Distancing itself from the idea of universal morality, this paper attempts to respond to the challenge of (...) both communitarians and deconstructionists in contemporary French poststructuralism. El objetivo de este trabajo es proponer un modelo eficiente e integrado para la selección de habilidades personales, con la idea de inducir su adquisición entre los estudiantes de la universidad. Definidas las competencias de amplio espectro a mejorar, se sugieren herramientas y procesos para su consecución. En concreto, como trabajo aplicado, se ofrece el uso del Trabajo de Fin de Grado como guía para realizarlo. El método consiste en permitir al docente implicado en la tutorización del TFG la elección (...) de competencias que aseguren el aprendizaje transversal del alumno así como la motivación del estudiante en la realización del proyecto. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren que es posible a través de programas aplicados como el aquí descrito lograr mejoras en la habilidad de los estudiantes, a la vez que se podrían mejorar los resultados académicos finales. Which categories of entities qualify as ontological categories? Which combinations of categories qualify as adequate systems of ontological categories? These are the two questions the author focuses on in this article. Contrary to the usual praxis in contemporary ontological literature, he addresses both questions conjointly. First, the author presents some problems of characterizing ontological categories in purely extensional terms, i.e. as widely inclusive natural classes. Second, he introduces the transversality requirement: ontological categories should be individually and naturally domain-transversal, i.e. (...) ontological categories must be neutral concerning different scientific disciplines like physics, biology and mathematics. As a result, ontological categories must have instances in any domain of reality. Finally, the author checks the adequacy of some systems of ontological categories according to this criterion and meets some possible objections. (shrink)

This article is a contribution to the critical sociology of science perspective introduced and developed by Pierre Bourdieu. The paper proposes a transversalist theory of science and technology production and diffusion. It is here argued that science and technology are comprised of multiple regimes where each regime is historically grounded, possesses its own division of labour, modes of cognitive and artifact production and has specific audiences. The major regimes include the disciplinary regime, utilitarian regime, transitory regime and research-technology regime. Though (...) each regime is autonomous, they are simultaneously closely interlaced. In science and technology, autonomy is not antithetical to interdependence and reciprocity. This study demonstrates for the four specified regimes of production and diffusion that differentiation is not contrary to interaction. In science, differentiation and interaction comprise two sides of the same coin. All regimes exhibit a measure of transversality. (shrink)

This essay proposes the idea of transversal geophilosophy as ultima philosophia to save the earth. Geophilosophy is that philosophical discipline which embraces all matters of the earth as a whole. Since it requires global efforts on all fronts, it is necessarily cross-cultural, cross-speciesistic, and cross-disciplinary, that is, geophilosophy is transversal. It attends especially to the importance of Sinism, which incorporates Confucianism, Daoism, and Chan/Zenb Buddhism, in constructing an ethico-aesthetic paradigm. Sinism is a species of relational ontology or philosophy of Interbeing (...) which defines reality as social process, that is, in the cosmos everything is connected to everything else or nothing exists in isolation, that coincides with the “first law” of ecology. Not only is the aesthetic a discourse of the body, but also the body is our anchorage in the world. In Sinism, the aesthetic and the ethical come together in the embodied concept of harmony, which is the master keyboard, as it were, they are being played together: what is harmonious is simultaneously beautiful and ethical, which culminates in the cosmopolitan virtue of ren. Today we must walk tomorrow as well as yesterday: we steop backward in order to step forward. The Way (Dao) of Ecopiety is to be had in part by recycling the ancient wisdom of Sinism instead of abandoning it as old and foreign. (shrink)

This paper examines Guattari's notion of transversality through a creative and ambiguous form of political intervention, the performative encounter. Drawing from Guattari's work on subject groups, in combination with Deleuze's conjunctive ‘and’, via contemporary theorisations of creative activism and affect, it maps out a movement that destabilises categorical dualisms between activists and non-activists, artists and non-artists. It proposes that transversals such as those enacted by the performative encounter open spaces for the emergence of new subjectivities, relations and worlds. In (...) doing so it critically extends Guattari's conceptualisations of political organisation, group subjectivation and aesthetics into radical political terrains that are antagonistic of the nation-state and capital at the same time as being affirmative of possible present and future conditions. We adventure becomings-Merry Pranksters with Félix Guattari on Ken Kesey's magic bus to resonate the group's transversality that we already affect subjunctively, individually and plurally from which our subjectivities crystallise collectively and independently with intensive-extensions to go viscerallectric and fractalactic. Yet in-process, before our consciousnesses go motored, we swim with jet streams of both Guattari and transversal poetics to navigate subjective affects by which wilful parameterisations achieve desirable eventualisations.

In this paper, particular key aspects of the philosophies of Plotinus and Wang Yangming have been analysed comparatively on the basis of important passages of their works. The method used for this investigation can be defined as that of transversal comparative induction, in which the focus is more on working out the details of affinities and similarities. As this means a first step in an encompassing systematic context, differences will be introduced more briefly. The present investigation aims to provide a (...) foundation for a more differentiating and therefore complementing second part, which will consider other contents and topics in both philosophies. The present analysis is performed in three systematic steps and with regard to three basic philosophical ideas: (1) the idea that human consciousness is a central medium in the universal process and interrelatedness of (biological) life as a whole; (2) the idea that the self-unfoldment of reality represents a meta-cognitive process beyond the limits of subjectivity and finite consciousness; and (3) the idea that it is our major task to perfect and know ourselves by means of a “return” to the highest underlying foundation of this universal process. In their own ways, Plotinus and Wang Yangming both show that by enfolding human reflexivity toward the ineffable source of all reality in thought, feeling, human activity, and natural processes, namely by actively pursuing the path of moral and intellective perfection, we become fulfilled mediators of a universal process and of that which all of it represents. This article examines creative practice-led research that uses transversality as an artistic process to generate ant-human relations. From the artistic perspective, transversality can materialize audiovisual performances with ants by employing technologies of visual and acoustic amplification; these are electronic assemblages made with piezoelectric sensors, computer vision, and infrared thermography, which reveal imperceptible qualities of ant behaviors. Whereas the concept of transversality remains active in philosophical discourses concerning human subjectivity, it has not been explored in artistic technological mediations (...) that seek relational ties with nonhuman beings. The analysis that follows argues that ants are transversal beings whose movements cross boundaries affecting organisms and materializing ecological and multispecies relations. These relations can be amplified using electronic media in order to reveal the invertebrate aesthetics of ants as a different way to understand their social lives, and as an alternative passage for representing their sensorial capacities.
