Some authors in disability studies have identified limits of both the medical and social models of disability. They have developed an alternative model, which I call the ‘composite model of disability’, to theorise societies’ ableist norms and structures along with the subjective/phenomenological experience of disability. This model maintains that ableist oppression is not the only source of suffering for disabled people: impairment can be as well. From a feminist, queer, trans activist, anti-ableist perspective and using an intersectional, autoethnographic methodology, I (...) apply this composite model of disability to trans identities to consider the potentially ‘debilitating’ aspects of transness. I argue that transness, like disability, has too often been perceived from two perspectives, medical or social, without the benefit of a third option. From a medical perspective, transness is reduced to an individual pathology curable with hormonal/surgical treatments, a conceptualisation that erases structural oppression. From a social point of view, transness is conceptualised as a neutral condition and variation in sex/gender identity. In this model, structural oppression (transphobia/cisgenderism) is seen as the only cause of ‘trans suffering’. I argue that, just as the medical and social models of disability provide limited opportunities for reflection on the complex experience of disability, medical and social understandings of transness, respectively, are insufficient to describe the complexity of trans experience. I explore the possibilities presented by the application of a composite model of disability in trans studies. By both problematising cisgenderist oppression and acknowledging trans people's subjective experiences of suffering through some of the debilitating aspects of transness, this composite model avoids the pitfalls of the medical and social models. The application of tools from disability studies to trans issues uncovers cisnormativity in disability movements and denounces ableism in trans movements. L’article, qui se fonde sur les travaux de Roger Bastide et Pierre Verger, identifie qui sont les personnes aptes à entrer en transe pour communiquer avec les dieux. On étudie ensuite comment elles préparent leur corps à recevoir leur dieu, et comment elles l’entretiennent de façon à ce que la transe puisse se répéter au cours de la vie religieuse d’une communauté. Ces personnes jouissent d’un statut social particulier au sein de la communauté, car d’une part elles ont commerce avec les dieux, et d’autre part ce commerce leur donne pouvoir à orienter la vie de la communauté. L’anthropologie moderne a redonné un statut à la fois aux « possédés » et aux cultes afro-brésiliens, alors que les premiers scientifiques qui les ont étudiés ne voyaient en la transe que la manifestation d’une folie. This chapter coarticulates religion and transgender by identifying some of the grammatical, historical, and bodily operations where the two productively meet. The first part of the chapter reconsiders the pervasive use of the trans- prefix in religious studies scholarship from a transgender perspective before demonstrating how methodological resources of trans studies can help religion scholars more fully articulate the stakes of their research on identity, movement, or embodiment. The second part of the chapter reviews key works of scholarship on trans/religious (...) phenomena in various genres and settings. The final part of the chapter discusses the creative perspective trans studies brings to the disciplinary impasses of religious studies, focusing on a critical approach to the scholar–practitioner binary. This article explores the relations between fatness, transness, racism and beauty, proposing a theoretical framework to critically examine how beauty is experienced and negotiated amidst intersecting forms of oppression. Drawing on conversations with fatness experts, academics and fat activists in Mexico and ethnographic research with travesti sex workers in Brazil, the article interrogates the limits of ‘permitted’ bodies within hegemonic beauty standards shaped by white supremacy, heteronormativity and patriarchy. It focuses on three key themes: the boundaries of ‘permitted’ fat and (...) trans identities, the negotiation of bodily intelligibility in relation to beauty norms, and the dynamic, context-specific intensities of oppression and resistance. By integrating concepts such as Matsuda's ‘the other question’ and Moreno Figueroa's ‘distributed intensities’, the article illuminates how beauty operates as a gatekeeper to social legitimacy and as a resource for survival, self-definition and collective resistance. Mexican fat activists challenge Eurocentric, thin-centric ideals, advocating for a self-defined, inclusive beauty rooted in their genealogies and experiences. Brazilian travestis navigate racial and gender hierarchies through hyper-feminine performances that simultaneously conform to and subvert hegemonic standards, asserting their presence within transphobic and racially stratified contexts. This analysis highlights the multifaceted nature of beauty as an experience that both marginalises and enables. It argues for a broader understanding of beauty that transcends dominant frameworks, advocating for actionable paths towards dignity, inclusion and liveability for those whose bodies defy societal norms. By examining the distributed intensities of oppression, the article offers insights into reshaping beauty and embodiment in ways that challenge exclusionary practices while fostering transformative possibilities. This chapter surveys recent scholarship on the spiritual and religious lives of trans people. While aiming not to flatten important religious and spiritual differences, there is a focus on notable commonalities across traditions in the extant scholarship and resources that address trans religious and spiritual practice. In putting diverse traditions and worldviews into conversation with each other via their commonalities, the intention is to investigate how related trans spiritual and religious desires are addressed via disparate traditions with distinct histories. O livro de Rodrigo Nunes, Do Transe à Vertigem: Ensaios sobre bolsonarismo e um mundo em transição, publicado pela Ubu Editora em 2022, se insere como uma ocorrência bibliográfica contemporânea ao fenômeno sobre o qual versa. A obra apresenta uma contribuição importante a respeito daquilo que se pode apreender filosoficamente sobre a entidade que se convencionou chamar de bolsonarismo a partir de uma perspectiva ao mesmo tempo sincrônica e diacrônica. Trata-se do esboço de uma ontologia política do bolsonarismo, apresentando (...) a concretização desse movimento a partir da própria exterioridade de relações das quais ele é um resultado precário. Além disso, a obra também propõe repensar a maneira de compreender a significação de eventos políticos importantes da última década, como Junho de 2013, desenvolvendo uma concepção nuançada de realismo político. In 2013 the mayor's office of Bogotá organized the first ever Mujer T. The event, originally conceived as a beauty pageant, generated considerable controversy. Unexpectedly, however, most of the criticism came not from conservative groups, but from well-known cisgender feminist scholars who criticized the event from a traditional gender perspective. A heated debate about the needs, challenges, desires, and opportunities of trans women continued during the weeks prior to the event. The discussion played out through blogs, social media, and private (...) and public conversations. Nevertheless, although there was much talk about transwomen, there was little room for their voices. This article argues that because of the actors involved, the dynamics and content of the conversations, and the changes that took place in its aftermath, Mujer T 2013 highlights how trans people's bodies, expressions—whether related to gender, culture, or politics—and self-determination processes are intensely policed and contested, even by those whose explicit intent is to support and celebrate them. Therefore, understanding the dynamics of what happened around Mujer T 2013 has important lessons for the development of trans-inclusive policies and initiatives, feminist scholarship and practice, and institutional and societal change. A new translation of Liu Xiang’s 劉向 Lienü zhuan 列女傳 is long overdue.1 And most of the translation by Anne Behnke Kinney, Exemplary Women of Early China: The Lienü Zhuan of Liu Xiang, is very well done indeed. At the same time, Kinney has made a series of odd and clearly intentional choices when translating the classic, choices worth querying. Most importantly, she insists on translating the classic as if it directly addressed its readers, even if this insistence rides roughshod (...) over the language used in the text, and flies in the face of the early evidence about both the composition of the text and the literary outputs of the woman, Ban Zhao 班昭.. Massimo Campanini offers a new translation of Averroes's Fasl Al Maqal from the Arabic original, preceded by a substantial introduction to the text. The introduction, a kind of interpretative essay, attempts to clarify Ibn Rushd's position on the relation between philosophy and religion, the genre to which the Fasl belongs and the format it utilizes, while also offering a fully blown and intriguing outline of the political, theological, cultural, and ideological debates in Andalusia during the Almohadic period. A large part (...) of the 55 pages of this informative essay is dedicated to what Campanini considers to be Ibn Rushd's view of language as a pluralistic means of expressing the same truth in multiple ways.... While fidelity is a crucial aspect of Jacques Derrida’s thinking as it pertains to issues of faith, ethics, and responsibility, this key position in deconstructionist discourse has hardly yet been brought to light. Less still have the biopolitical resonances of Derrida’s work, with its careful attention to the terms and stakes of life particularly in his later writing, been considered as a deconstructionist practice of fidelity and infidelity in its own right. In pursuing these threads, this essay argues that thinking (...) a deconstructionist ethics through fidelity and biopolitics makes possible the crafting of a new philosophical weave for catching our responsibilities to others – to the very otherness of life itself – that Derridean hospitality opens up. Taken together in this way, a deconstructionist fidelity to life otherwise, to a biopolitics to come, makes possible an infidelity to political order as we know it that explodes the limitations of biopolitical theory. In squinting, blinking, tearing up, and listening, the borders of life are blurred in an ambivalent ethics of a transness within which life itself is made to waver and arrive anew. (shrink)

The concept of gender dysphoria, typically understood as a pathological experienced mismatch between one’s “inner gender identity” and one’s body, has been central to defining and “diagnosing” transness. Gender euphoria, which I define as joy, excitement, or pleasure in one’s gendered embodiment (including the social reception and emplacement of one’s gendered body), is an important notion in trans communities, but it has received little attention from academics, health care systems, or mainstream culture. Beginning from the reality and central importance of (...) euphoria allows us to better understand everyone’s gendered experience and embodiment, and to avoid the substantial conceptual and ethical harms inflicted by a mental health model of trans identity that centers dysphoria. Organizing our understanding of trans identity, desires, and experiences around trans joy is conceptually clarifying; helps ground better medical and legal policy; and is more accurate than when we organize it around trans tragedy and pathology, even while we retain our realism about the fact that trans tragedy and dysphoric suffering are real and important. This essay looks at the history of confrontations between trans people and non-trans philosophers. It argues that trans contentions within philosophy should be considered alongside the intersection of transness with social class, patterns of anti-trans employment discrimination, affective injustice against trans employees, and the discipline of philosophy as an exclusive prestige-driven workplace. It concludes that philosophy should better study cis philosophers and the ways that they encounter trans people in the world, as colleagues, and as objects of inquiry.

The paper is structured as follows. First, I will single out three salient moments of trans philosophy, drawing on both my own experience as a trans person and the various attempts to theorize transness as laid out by Talia Mae Bettcher's "Trapped in the Wrong Theory". From there, I will extrapolate three ways to see the relationship between logic and trans philosophy, and provide for each some examples of both current and possible future work. Finally, in analogy with the literature (...) on feminist logic, I will attempt to address the further question of what trans logic could be, as a discipline and a system. (shrink)

Looking from a critical race perspective at Wittig’s lesbian, in this article, I draw two conclusions. First, I suggest that it is actually trans exclusionary lesbians' own transphobia that makes them cis-gendered. And second, it becomes clear that the politicisation of choosing and refusing gender needs to acknowledge racism’s shaping role in the construction of gender. My approach not only intervenes in transphobic feminisms that are obsessed with simplistic understandings of sexual violence, but also questions rigid cis/trans binaries and rejects (...) accounts of trans/gender that ignore the role of racialisation for the emergence of gender. The main question that I address is: how to conceptualise the complex im/possibilities of refusing and choosing in relation to gender? It is my aim to connect seemingly disparate knowledge productions on genderqueer, trans and other ‘impossible’ genders and sexualities. I am particularly interested in a phenomenon that can be described as ‘lesbian haunting’: the ambivalences one will find in tracing lesbian theory in relation to transing gender. With this, it is my attempt to rethink lesbian, queer and trans feminist approaches on violence, and to investigate the role of sexual violence within broader concepts of violence. More specifically, in order to understand both ‘gender’ and ‘transing gender’ as always already racialised, my approach builds on theories that identify ‘ungendering’ as an effect of normative racial violence (e.g. Spillers, 1987; Lewis, 2017; Snorton, 2017). This article identifies and analyses links between conceptualisations of trans-gender and trans-national, and aims for a critical redefinition of political agency. Through an examination of theories on transing, passing and performativity in queer-, trans- and transnational feminist knowledge production—illustrated by discursive examples from transgender communities and Romanian migrant communities—I call for a conceptualisation of entangled power relations that does not rely on fixed, pre-established categories, but defines subjectivity through risk in political struggle. I suggest that ‘transing’ the nation and ‘transing’ (...) gender could be thought as critical moves for a radical deconstruction of gendered and national belonging. Rather than provide a static definition of the term ‘transnationalism’, the article explores potentials and limits of going beyond ‘the national’ and ‘gender’, and intervenes in forms of minority nationalism that reproduce racism, sexism, heteronormativity and gender binary as the norm of Western national belonging. In particular, building on Jasbir Puar's (2007) conceptualisation of homonationalism, the article shows how forms of nationalism in Western transgender and migrant communities rely on a combination of heteronormative binary gendering and the exertion of racism. While a conventionalised approach to transnationalism defines the term as a political strategy based on transnational politics, I play with suggesting different dimensions of transnationalism: it could mean ‘transgender nationalism’; the ‘assimilation of transgendered persons to the Western nation’; or ‘cross-border-nationalism’, a form of nationalism often established in migrant communities that constructs the diaspora as a nationalist extension of the homeland. My focus, therefore, is on analysing privilegings, contradictions and ambivalences in gendering, racialising and nationalising ascriptions of (non)belonging. Overall, and as an alternative to romanticised knowledge productions of crossing national and gendered borders, I suggest a power-sensitive epistemological and methodological shift in thinking entangled power relations, belonging and subjectivity in transnational feminist knowledge productions. In 2011, a 5,000-year-old “male” skeleton buried in a “female” way was discovered by an archaeological team just outside of modern-day Prague. This article queries the impulse to name such a discovery as evidence of transgender identity, and bodies, in an increasingly ancient past. To do so, it takes up the work of Denise Ferreira da Silva, Sylvia Wynter, and Hortense Spillers as a means to push back against the impetus to name such discoveries “transgender” in order to shore up (...) the legitimacy of contemporary trans identity. Each of these three thinkers offers a different vantage point for rethinking such naming practices that push the reader to consider how desires to name and place “transgender” in a distant past papers over the violence of plantation slavery, global imperialism, and the Enlightenment's shift toward scientific reason. This article argues not that such anthropological discoveries should not be considered transgender, but rather that the desire for them to be, or become, transgender does not legitimate contemporary transgender identity, and may instead treat certain iterations of transness as spatially and temporally universal. Rituals of mourning and celebration abound in queer and trans communities, serving to strengthen bonds of communal kinship, alleviate feelings of alienation and hopelessness, and aid in the transformation of oppressive contexts. In offering an analysis of such rituals, we draw upon van Gennep and Turner to illumine the qualities of liminality and transformation in queer and trans communal rituals, expanding the idea of liminality to honor a sense of sacred in-between in everyday life. Drawing upon Pauli Murray’s use of (...) the term “ongoingness” in conversation with Shelly Rambo’s work on “remaining,” we propose a transing of ritual theory that opens up liminality not merely as a pass through but as a place of remaining, both in ritual and in queer and trans lives. The framing of the 2015 Rachel Dolezal transracialism scandal as a new kind of “trans moment” relies on a peculiar understanding of transness and Blackness, and the relationship they share. In this article, I analyze the “trans grammar” that structures this post-Dolezalian transracialism discourse, seeking to understand its points of reference in, and implications for, theories of transness and Blackness. I argue the post-Dolezalian transracialism discourse evidences a concern amongst Black trans feminists that the institutionalization of a “trans” concept that (...) indexes always and only a normative figuration of “transgender” is reliant on the abstraction of the racialization of gendered space, and the erasure of Black trans feminist genealogies. I analyze the debate’s use of “trans” as a prefix for descriptors of the phenomenon Dolezal has come to represent and find the most prevalent usages create “trans” as a qualifier that is emptied of conceptual significance and political investments. This grammar, I argue, captures both Blackness and transness as fixed and knowable. Ultimately, the analysis builds an argument that the discourses’ dominant trans grammars rely on and reproduce a deficient theorization of racialized and gendered identities that depoliticizes transness and recreates gendered and Black identities as a priori and immutable. This chapter takes eight narratological concepts—tense, alternating narration, disnarration, plot, reliability, metalepsis, embodiment, and focalisation—and shows how they can be enriched in their scope and function by considering the insights and concerns of trans studies. Each topic is approached by drawing from perspectives within narrative studies—feminist, rhetorical, cognitive, structuralist, and more—alongside scholarship in trans studies on bodies, visibility, time, language, and social change. Understanding the forms that transness takes is crucial at a historical moment in which the lives of gender-variant (...) people are both increasingly displayed and increasingly threatened. Without needing to abandon an emphasis on questions of embodied identity, justice, care, and material politics that are central trans studies, narrative studies can provide a language that allows us to analyse how trans stories are shaped and constructed. In return, it will find its conceptual tools expanded and re-signified. Two recent novels, Nicola Dinan’s Bellies (2023) and Catherine Lacey’s Pew (2020), are used here to illustrate how inquiries into form and investigations of gender can collaborate, demonstrating that methodological blending can yield results that take into account the full textual and political dimensions of trans narratives. Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth are currently being targeted by global anti-trans legislation that would prevent their access to gender-affirming care even by healthcare providers willing to deliver it and who understand the importance of this support. It has been suggested in some studies that transness in young people is a result of peer contagion. As such their free will, authenticity and autonomy could be brought into question when accessing gender-affirming care. It is important to explore the relevance of (...) these concepts concerning the provision of gender-affirming care to TGD youth by nurses and other healthcare professionals. Nurses should challenge the notion held by some that these young people are not capable of knowing themselves or the level of treatment they require. They can do this by practising gender-affirming care determined by aspirational ethical values of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice. (shrink)

This paper explores a tension between Francis's openness to ‘liminality’ and certain papal statements condemning transness that reproduce the ways in which people are marginalised as trans. It seeks to make sense of these tensions, reading them back through Francis's theology of history, and suggesting a place for trans people to locate ourselves within the Church in spite of them. It argues that Francis's failings around transness can be viewed as ‘limitations’ to be overcome in a redemptive movement. It then (...) argues that Francis's theology of history is reflected in his ‘dialogical’ use of authority, which admits a space and role for us as pastorally accompanying the Church beyond these limitations. Finally, it argues that Francis's pastoral theology is founded on a theology of encounter which suggests that this process is an expression of divine love that draws people to God through a loving encounter with others. Trans people are thus called to put ourselves at the service of this love, and can take hope in its powers even amidst our own weakness. (shrink)

Myra Hird and Harlan Weaver have been invited by the editors of this special issue to enter into discussion with each other – to conduct a series of interchanges – because of the careful attention their research has paid to the ways in which transness as a lived reality is ontologized in humans, non-human animals, bacteria, and viruses. With this issue’s interchanges, we would like to further the conversation on critically approaching the consequences of merging transness with animality. Na construção do texto foram utilizadas contribuições teóricas de Awolalu, Bataille, Braudrillard, Fernandes, Rodrigo Frias, Ribeiro, Sàlámì e Valença, bem como fragmentos da Sabedoria Veda. Foram enfatizadas a dinâmica estabelecida entre (...) divindades e humanos em rituais religiosos africanos, com especial destaque à imaginação e à fantasia no processo epistêmico propiciado por esses rituais. Reconhecido o relevante papel reservado à sedução no erotismo, foi assinalado o risco de ser o erotismo despojado de seu caráter místico e sagrado e reduzido à condição de lubricidade, devassidão e lascívia. Ueshiba Morihei (1883-1969), créateur de l’aikidō, fonde son « budō » (voie martiale) avec Deguchi Onisaburō (1871-1948), dirigeant de l’Ōmoto-kyō, l’une des « nouvelles religions » japonaises. Ils conçoivent le budō comme « la voie de création et d’ordonnancement de l’univers » en opposition aux « budō corporels » influencés par le modèle occidental du sport. Selon eux, l’Occident, « matérialiste », a profondément modifié les pratiques japonaises de telle sorte que le vécu du corps comme shintai, comme réceptacle des (...) kami (esprits ou divinités) lors des transes de possession est en voie de se perdre, et avec lui tout un monde. Le corps de possession rend communiquant les mondes : avec sa perte, il n’y a plus de transgressions possibles des frontières ontologiques ; l’homme ne peut plus s’unir à sa racine et retrouver sa totalité ; les animaux, les plantes et les pierres ne parlent plus et le dieu originel unique devient inaccessible, caché dans « l’imperceptible de l’imperceptible ». This article explores trans*versal connections between transness, blackness, and the animal. Drawn from the conceptual vocabulary of cultural theorist Félix Guattari, this article argues that the central purpose of transversality is to create linkages between previously unexplored singularities in a field, and then to create connections in other conceptual topographies at different levels of discursivity. The article advances an extension of Guattari’s “transversal” into a more capacious concept of the “trans*versal,” to analyze the #blacklivesmatter and #blacktranslivematter movements that draw on (...) critical animal studies to reveal ways that species hierarchies are always present in processes of racialization that allow some lives to matter more, or less, than others. Psychology’s emphasis on individual experience has created idealised prototypes for gender identity, promulgated through traditional tools of psychological evaluation. Transgender and gender nonconforming people have been urged to fit into binary conceptions of such evaluations, at least until the recent depathologisation approved by the World Health Organization. The present theoretical study examines how psychological discourses around gender diversity and corporeality have been transformed. The fields of queer and trans studies in religion have deep roots. As the chapters in this handbook show, conversations about what today some might call queerness, transness, and religion have been taking place around the world for millennia. The contemporary scholarship in which these fields are grounded is also older and more extensive than many people are aware, with early openly gay, lesbian, and bisexual theological and spiritual writings appearing in the 1970s. In line with broader academic shifts, gay (...) and lesbian studies in religion began to appear at a more rapid pace in the 1980s, and then as trans studies and queer theory developed in the 1990s, they too came to have a place in the various fields that contribute to our understanding of the many perceptions, perspectives, and experiences of the world that fall under the wide academic umbrella of “religion.” Though growth was initially slow within the academy, and much of the initial writing was done by religious leaders and independent scholars, the pace has picked up steadily over the last thirty years. This communication wants to deal with the relations between the Philosophy of Plato and the cult of Dionysus in Ancient Greece. This makes necessary to distinguish the cult of Dionysus with its feasts and secret rituals, especially the maenadic rites of women, from orphism. The Maenads practiced rites closely associated with mania and those rites included bloody sacrifice (sparagmos) and the consommation of raw flesh (omophagy). As we assumed in our book“Dionysos em transe: la voix des femmes”, this cult (...) was an iniciatic feminine rite, connected to biological transformations particular to women, as pregnance and birth. At the other side, orphism is an asceptic and vegetarian sect, which clearly influenced some platonic theories, as exposed in Cratyle or Gorgias, concerning “the body as the tomb of the soul”. What we want to show here is the dionysiac character of some other theories, as those about the mania in Phaedrus or even the so called “platonic theory of Love” in the Symposium. We are dealing than with the definition of Philosophy itself in platonic dialogs: is Philosophy a study about death as orphic influence demands or is it a work of birth, as dionysiac influence suggests? Contexto: Algumas experiências religiosas e/ou espirituais apresentam um caráter dissociativo. Há carência de estudos que indiquem critérios diferenciais entre a dissociação patológica e saudável em contexto religioso. Objetivo: Este estudo pretende observar as experiências dissociativas sob diferentes perspectivas: uma ligada à psicopatologia e a outra, à saúde. Método: Ensaio temático com a literatura disponível sobre o assunto. Bases de dados: Pubmed e PsychINFO. Também foi feita busca manual de artigos relacionados ao assunto. Resultados: 1. Historicamente, alguns autores se debruçaram sobre (...) as relações entre dissociação e fenômenos religiosos, mas os dados não são conclusivos; 2. A dissociação acontece em um continuum entre saúde e doença; 3. A psiquiatria transcultural oferece aporte para a compreensão de experiências dissociativas, como o transe de possessão, contextualizando-as culturalmente; 4. Há uma série de estudos feitos no Brasil, que exploram o diagnóstico diferencial entre experiências religiosas saudáveis e patológicas. Conclusões: Experiências religiosas/espirituais de caráter dissociativo, podem ser consideradas saudáveis se apresentarem ausência de sofrimento, controle, forem contextualizadas e trouxerem benefício para o indivíduo. Indivíduos sem Autodirecionamento e com experiências autocentradas mostram maior probabilidade de desenvolver patologia. Futuros estudos deverão explorar empírica e longitunalmente estas questões. La musique témoigne d'une sensualité fondatrice, où la peau émue a ouvert la construction du corps et de la psyché. Cette sensualité, ici suivie à partir du mythe de Pan, prend pour nom Éros. Or, celui-ci a plusieurs visages. Déjà, dans Le Banquet, Pausanias distingue l'Éros "céleste" de celui "vulgaire". Le premier s'adresse à l'âme et aux Idées, en portant un désir alimenté par les formes culturelles propres aux arts libéraux. Le second signifie l'abandon charnel à la transe et (...) à la jouissance. Si le conflit entre Apollon et Dionysos se retrouve alors, Éros révèle aussi un troisième visage, plus primordial que les deux autres et nécessaire à leur opposition. Ces trois visages définissent chacun une esthétique musicale, tout en interrogeant l'élaboration corporelle et symbolique du sujet. Que ce soit dans un cadre éducatif ou thérapeutique, ou dans le contexte de la société postmoderne qui n'a retenu que le seul visage dionysiaque, ces trois Éros se meuvent selon un équilibre tendu, où se donne le sens même de l'humanisation. Between 2007 and 2011, Kevin Barnes, the white founding member and vocalist of indie group Of Montreal, performed as a Black trans alter-ego named Georgie Fruit. In 2020, Barnes came out as nonbinary and apologised for Fruit but acknowledged that playing Fruit helped them actualise their own gender. This article takes seriously the relationship between white nonbinary self-actualisation and an imagination of Black transness, questioning what yoking Fruit to the development of Barnes’ own white nonbinariness does, even and especially as (...) they disavow the significance of Fruit's Blackness. I analyse the records Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? and Skeletal Lamping and their respective paratexts (press releases, interviews, documentaries, etc.) through trans negativity, a theoretical framework that considers how liberal trans identity is bound to anti-Blackness. Tracing the affective and psychic processes through which Fruit furnishes Barnes’ sense of self, this article interrogates the particularities of fungibility. As a character performed on stage, Fruit is interpreted as a form of contemporary minstrelsy that serves as a defensive mechanism to distance Barnes from their desires enough for sexual and gendered exploration. Through juxtaposition to minstrelsy, the affect of animatedness is revealed to subtend Barnes’ actualisation as nonbinary, establishing a veneer of freedom that mobilises Fruit as a pliable body. Encountering Barnes as a means through which to elaborate the anti-Blackness that can furnish the psychic structure of white nonbinary embodiment, this article concludes by questioning the resonances between the plasticisation accorded to Blackness and the imagined plasticity of nonbinariness. Can the plasticity of Barnes’ nonbinariness be extricated from that of Blackness? Finding a relationship between animatedness, the plasticisation of Blackness and white nonbinariness, I suggest that trans studies take more seriously the anti-Blackness of gender consolidation. This chapter provides a survey of queer and trans readings of midrashic and talmudic texts that are becoming more widely known through published works. After some introductory discussion about the context from and within which queer and trans torah emerges, the chapter presents an overview of scholarship focused on halakhic constructions of gender. The chapter then discusses the relatively scant attention to midrashic sources and moves on to provide some theoretical underpinnings and examples for future approaches to queering and transing (...) rabbinic traditions through theories of gender performativity and multiplicity. It ends with a brief reconsideration of the question of anachronism in LGBTQ scholarship, and it offers rabbinic interpretative strategies as historical precedents for trans, non-binary gender, and queer uses of anachronism. Resumo Tambor de Mina é o nome da religião afro-brasileira no Maranhão e na Amazônia estabelecida a partir de São Luís desde meados do século XIX. Existem duas casas fundadas por africanos que se continuam: a Casa das Minas Jeje, de origem daomeana e a Casa de Nagô, iorubana de onde derivam a maioria dos terreiros de Mina recentes e atuantes. Trata-se de religião muito ritualizada e discreta, envolvida em segredos e mistérios cuja mitologia é pouco comentada e os rituais (...) muito desenvolvidos. As religiões afro-brasileiras se caracterizam pela realização de festas com transe, danças e comidas que atraem muitos participantes. A comida é bastante para oferecer a todos e distribuir as sobras. A fartura nas festas maiores constitui um dos elementos de prestígio das casas. O texto baseia-se em entrevistas com líderes de um terreiro antigo e de duas casas recentes, sobre comida de santo nas festas. Na linguagem de Mauss o sacrifício constitui obrigação que estabelece uma comunicação entre o mundo sagrado e o profano. O preparo e o consumo da comida de santo permitem conhecer aspectos do sincretismo e dos simbolismos nos rituais. There are two matrix-houses founded by Africans: Casa das Minas Jeje , a Dahomean origin house and Casa de Nagô , originally Yoruba and from which most of the Tambor de Mina 's houses come from. It is a very ritualized and discrete religion, involved in secrets and mysteries whose mythology is not frequently commented upon and its rituals are highly developed. Afro-Brazilian religions are characterized by the performance of parties with trance, dance and food which attract many participants. Food is enough to be offered to everyone and have the remains distributed. The abundance of food during the bigger festivities constitutes a prestige element to the houses. According to Mauss, sacrifice is an obligation that establishes communication between sacred and profane. Le conte permet d’actualiser, de métaphoriser et de dépasser une altération traumatogène des vécus familiaux. Sa structure cyclique, sa narrativité spécifique liée à une mobilisation manifeste de l’imaginaire lui confèrent une capacité élaborative suffisante pour engager le sujet dans une mise à l’épreuve identitaire corrélée à un étayage intersubjectif en mesure de lui offrir une ouverture symbolique adéquate. L’analyse du conte russe L’oiseau de feu met en évidence les différentes manières dont dispose le conte pour symboliser les transformations nécessaires à (...) la progression maturative individuelle, au-delà des conflits familiaux rencontrés. L’auteur présente les trois temps du dispositif du groupe-conte au cours desquels se manifestent, à mesure que se développe une processualisation psychique groupale, la mise en jeu des niveaux inter et transgénérationnels ainsi que la résolution des conflits familiaux.
