Deep Cuts and the Future of Nuclear Deterrence.Aspen Strategy Group (ed.) - 1989 - University Press of America.
This volume opens with an analysis of public opinion data which reveals that several common beliefs about public attitudes toward defense are myths. The public has not repudiated nuclear deterrence; public attitudes are quite stable, not volatile; and public opinion is not contradictory.

  4. Immunizing Strategies and Epistemic Defense Mechanisms.Maarten Boudry & Johan Braeckman - 2011 - Philosophia 39 (1):145-161.
An immunizing strategy is an argument brought forward in support of a belief system, though independent from that belief system, which makes it more or less invulnerable to rational argumentation and/or empirical evidence. By contrast, an epistemic defense mechanism is defined as a structural feature of a belief system which has the same effect of deflecting arguments and evidence. We discuss the remarkable recurrence of certain patterns of immunizing strategies and defense mechanisms in pseudoscience and other belief systems. Five (...)

  5. CSR Strategies of SMEs and Large Firms. Evidence from Italy.Francesco Perrini, Angeloantonio Russo & Antonio Tencati - 2007 - Journal of Business Ethics 74 (3):285-300.
While corporate social responsibility (CSR) is becoming a mainstream issue for many organizations, most of the research to date addresses CSR in large businesses rather than in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), because it is too often considered a prerogative of large businesses only. The role of SMEs in an increasingly dynamic context is now being questioned, including what factors might affect their socially responsible behaviour. The goal of this paper is to make a comparison of SME and large firm (...)

  6. Strategies for the control of voluntary movements with one mechanical degree of freedom.Gerald L. Gottlieb, Daniel M. Corcos & Gyan C. Agarwal - 1989 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 12 (2):189-210.
A theory is presented to explain how accurate, single-joint movements are controlled. The theory applies to movements across different distances, with different inertial loads, toward targets of different widths over a wide range of experimentally manipulated velocities. The theory is based on three propositions. (1) Movements are planned according to “strategies” of which there are at least two: a speed-insensitive (SI) and a speed-sensitive (SS) one. (2) These strategies can be equated with sets of rules for performing diverse movement tasks. (...)

Which rules for aggregating judgments on logically connected propositions are manipulable and which not? In this paper, we introduce a preference-free concept of non-manipulability and contrast it with a preference-theoretic concept of strategy-proofness. We characterize all non-manipulable and all strategy-proof judgment aggregation rules and prove an impossibility theorem similar to the Gibbard--Satterthwaite theorem. We also discuss weaker forms of non-manipulability and strategy-proofness. Comparing two frequently discussed aggregation rules, we show that “conclusion-based voting” is less vulnerable to manipulation (...)

This study examines the relation between a firm’s business strategy and its corporate social responsibility performance. Using a comprehensive measure of business strategy based on the Miles and Snow theoretical framework, we find that firms following an innovation-oriented strategy are associated with better CSR performance than those following an efficiency-oriented strategy. Specifically, compared with defenders, prospectors engage in more socially responsible activities, fewer socially irresponsible activities, and perform better in both stakeholder- and third-party-related CSR areas. Taken (...)

Despite the rising interest in environmental strategies, few studies have examined how managerial cognition of such strategies influences actual innovation capability development. Taking a managerial cognition perspective, this study investigates how managers’ perceptions of institutional pressures relate to their focus on proactive environmental strategy, which in turn affects firms’ realized innovation capability. The findings from a primary survey and three secondary datasets of publicly listed companies in China reveal that managers’ perceived business and social pressures are positively associated with (...)

This paper analyses the use of strategies and instruments for organising ethics by small and large business in the Netherlands. We find that large firms mostly prefer an integrity strategy to foster ethical behaviour in the organisation, whereas small enterprises prefer a dialogue strategy. Both large and small firms make least use of a compliance strategy that focuses on controlling and sanctioning the ethical behaviour of workers. The size of the business is found to have a positive (...)

Is corporate social responsibility a tool for strategic positioning? While CSR is sometimes used as part of a differentiation strategy, this article analyzes which specific CSR strategies arise in response to competitive pressures. The results suggest that competitive pressures lead firms to increase their positive social actions without necessarily decreasing their social weaknesses. This positive impact varies with specific dimensions of CSR and industry specificities: Competition improves social performance toward core stakeholders to a greater extent than social performance toward (...)

Strategies are mentioned across a variety of domains, from business ethics, to the philosophy of war, philosophy of sport, game theory, and others. However, despite their wide use, very little has been said about how to think about what strategies are or how they relate to other prominently discussed concepts. In this article, I probe the close connection between strategies and plans, which have been much more thoroughly characterized in the philosophy of action. After highlighting the challenges of analyzing strategies (...)

In 1966, Richard Levins argued that there are different strategies in model building in population biology. In this paper, I reply to Orzack and Sober’s (1993) critiques of Levins, and argue that his views on modeling strategies apply also in the context of evolutionary genetics. In particular, I argue that there are different ways in which models are used to ask and answer questions about the dynamics of evolutionary change, prospectively and retrospectively, in classical versus molecular evolutionary genetics. Further, I (...)

The Compression Strategy Spectrum: A Quantitative Framework for Ontological Positions.Fan Mingdi - manuscript
Traditional AI ontology remains trapped in the binary of "having" or "lacking" subjectivity—unable to account for the ontological novelty of large language models (LLMs) or to precisely characterize differences among distinct AI systems. This paper proposes the Compression Strategy Spectrum as a unified framework that redefines the essence of intelligence as effective compression, using the α-parameterization to describe the continuous strategy space from cross-entropy minimization to Epiplexity maximization. Building on this framework, the paper argues: (1) the "negative subjectivity" (...)

Currently, entrepreneurs and corporations overwhelmingly do not view the alleviation of global poverty as a strategic priority. Yet business activity can have a negative as well as a positive effect on each distinctive form of poverty. In order to reduce poverty, entrepreneurs have to find ways of limiting the negative aspects. This might be achieved by deliberately augmenting strategies so that they can achieve a synthesis, in partnership with governments and NGO’s.

Incorporating Strategy Instruction in Assignment Design to Remove Barriers to Writing Assignments in Philosophy.Deanna Fidelak & Kristin Rodier - 2021 - In Frederic Fovet, Handbook of Applying Research on Universal Design. pp. 97-114.
In early 2020, there was a faculty development workshop at MacEwan University on how to design philosophy writing assignments with fewer barriers commonly experienced by students with disabilities. This chapter streamlines the workshop and surveys barriers common to philosophy assignment guidelines: length, jargon, single-format, and a “don'ts” section. The authors contextualize these characteristics within the values, norms, and practices of academic philosophy. They present a case study of transforming Rodier's introductory philosophy guidelines before and after a UDL consult with Fidelak. (...)

The strategy of model building in climate science.Lachlan Douglas Walmsley - 2020 - Synthese 199 (1-2):745-765.
In the 1960s, theoretical biologist Richard Levins criticised modellers in his own discipline of population biology for pursuing the “brute force” strategy of building hyper-realistic models. Instead of exclusively chasing complexity, Levins advocated for the use of multiple different kinds of complementary models, including much simpler ones. In this paper, I argue that the epistemic challenges Levins attributed to the brute force strategy still apply to state-of-the-art climate models today: they have big appetites for unattainable data, they are (...)

In the 1950s and 1960s, an interfield interaction between molecular biologists and biochemists integrated important discoveries about the mechanism of protein synthesis. This extended discovery episode reveals two general reasoning strategies for eliminating gaps in descriptions of the productive continuity of mechanisms: schema instantiation and forward chaining/backtracking. Schema instantiation involves filling roles in an overall framework for the mechanism. Forward chaining and backtracking eliminate gaps using knowledge about types of entities and their activities. Attention to mechanisms highlights salient features of (...)

Previously proposed strategies for preventing hermeneutical injustices mostly take for granted the interests people have in various things about themselves being intelligible, and aim only to enable them to satisfy these interests. Historically, the pursuit of such strategies has been somewhat successful in preventing trans people from suffering hermeneutical injustices in their interactions with cis people. Yet the widespread anti-trans backlash of recent years has brought to the fore a number of limitations and previously unacknowledged downsides to trans people’s pursuit (...)

The PCS tries to undercut the force of the epistemic arguments by attributing the occurrence of the epistemic gaps to the special character of phenomenal concepts—the concepts by means of which we think about (...)

Discovery proceeds in stages of construction, evaluation, and revision. Each of these stages is constrained by what is known or conjectured about what is being discovered. A new characterization of mechanism aids in specifying what is to be discovered when a mechanism is sought. Guidance in discovering mechanisms may be provided by the reasoning strategies of schema instantiation, modular subassembly, and forward/backward chaining. Examples are found in mechanisms in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, and evolutionary biology.

The myth of a German “Conservative Revolution” distinct from and opposed to National Socialism deserves to be re-examined. The correspondence of Swiss journalist Armin Mohler, the author of a 1950 thesis on the “Conservative Revolution”, shows how his work tried to exonerate certain Nazi authors, most notably Carl Schmitt. Mohler, who had tried to join the Waffen SS in 1942, also owed important positions over the course of his career to the influence of former Waffen SS leaders, such as the (...)

Legitimation Strategies as Valuable Signals in Nonfinancial Reporting? Effects on Investor Decision-Making.Barbara E. Weißenberger, Madeleine Feder, Peter Kotzian, Daniel Reimsbach & Rüdiger Hahn - 2021 - Business and Society 60 (4):943-978.
Companies disclosing negative aspects in sustainability reports often employ legitimation strategies to present mishaps in a favorable light. In incentivized experiments, we find that nonprofessional investors divest from companies with a negative sustainability-related incident, and that symbolic legitimation (which only evasively explains a negative incident) is not a strong enough signal to counter this divestment behavior. Even substantial legitimation (which reports on measures and behavioral change) mitigates the divestment decisions only if the company reports on concrete remediation actions in morally (...)

Strategies of Islamist Extremism in Europe.Miroslav Mares - 2015 - International Studies. Interdisciplinary Political and Cultural Journal 17 (1):109-118.
This paper explains various strategies of contemporary Islamists extremism in Europe. The author identifies the most important variants of Islamist extremism and deals with their goals and with strategic approaches how to achieve these goals. Quasi-legalist strategies as well as violent forms of interest-empowerment are described. The author uses sources from various Islamist organizations and analyses these materials within the framework of modern insurgency. A comprehensive outlook and threat assessment of Islamist extremist strategies are included in this article.

CSR Strategy at a Crossroads.Virginia Munro, Denni Arli & Sharyn Rundle-Thiele - 2016 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 27:167-179.
The relationship between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and society is at a crossroads. In particular, multinational enterprises (MNEs) must operate in multiple host environments while maintaining a social license to operate, and increasingly adopt CSR strategy relevant to stakeholders in these environments. This study examines MNE employee perceptions of CSR from one multinational in Indonesia and Australia, and determines their identification with and engagement in the organization’s CSR Social Initiatives (SIs). The results reveal perceived CSR has a significant effect (...)

Environmental Innovation Strategy and Organizational Performance: Enabling and Controlling Uses of Management Control Systems.Chaminda Wijethilake, Rahat Munir & Ranjith Appuhami - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 151 (4):1139-1160.
This study examines the extent to which enabling and controlling uses of management control systems moderate the relationship between environmental innovation strategy and organizational performance. Partial least squares structural equation modeling is used to analyze survey data collected from top managers in 175 manufacturing and services sectors representing multinational and local organizations operating in Sri Lanka. We find that while the enabling use of MCS positively moderates the relationship between environmental innovation strategy and organizational performance, in contrast, the (...)

  46. Strategies of Explanatory Abstraction in Molecular Systems Biology.Nicholaos Jones - 2018 - Philosophy of Science 85 (5):955-968.
I consider three explanatory strategies from recent systems biology that are driven by mathematics as much as mechanistic detail. Analysis of differential equations drives the first strategy; topological analysis of network motifs drives the second; mathematical theorems from control engineering drive the third. I also distinguish three abstraction types: aggregations, which simplify by condensing information; generalizations, which simplify by generalizing information; and structurations, which simplify by contextualizing information. Using a common explanandum as reference point—namely, the robust perfect adaptation of (...)

Strategy and Planning.John Morrison - 2024 - In The Just Transition: A Systems-Thinking Approach To Managing Climate Action. Cham: Springer Nature Switzerland. pp. 267-282.
The final chapters of the book look at the three critical components of how any climate transition must be managed to align with the tenants of a Just Transition. The first of these is strategy and planning, whether this be in a government’s own Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) or the Corporate Transition Plan of a business. One key limitation of many plans is that they place bounds at the level of the country or the corporate entity. A more systemic (...)

Strategy Selection.Tracy Dathe, Marc Helmold, René Dathe & Isabel Dathe - 2024 - In Tracy Dathe, Marc Helmold, René Dathe & Isabel Dathe, Implementing Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Principles for Sustainable Businesses: A Practical Guide in Sustainability Management. Cham: Springer Verlag. pp. 69-83.
The selection of the optimal strategic option is essential for long-term business success. Such strategic choice is a comprehensive process that involves narrowing down the strategic options after thorough consideration of the possible impacts of the most influential internal and external factors. This chapter begins with the introduction of Mintzberg’s strategy definition in terms of his 5Ps model that includes the core elements of plan, ploy, pattern, position and perspective, followed by the key selection criteria for strategic choices. Subsequently, (...)

  49. Strategy Corporate Social Responsibility and Investment Efficiency: The Role of Substitute and Complement.Jianing Li, Xinran Qin & Yu-En Lin - 2025 - Business and Society 64 (4):757-803.
This article investigates the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and investment efficiency from a strategic perspective. Taking into account the competitive strategy between firms, we proposed an adjusted competitive strategy measure and fitted CSR with a competitive strategy such as strategic CSR and examined the impact of competitive strategy on CSR and the sensitivity of investment to free cash flow. The results show that firms engage in CSR strategically. The stronger the strategic substitutes in which (...)

On degrowth strategy: The Simpler Way perspective.Ted Trainer - 2024 - Environmental Values 33 (4):394-413.
The rapidly expanding degrowth literature has focused predominantly on the case for degrowth and its goals and much less attention has been given to how it might be achieved. The following discussion is not concerned to review the current state of the discussion and refers to it only in order to develop a case for a particular approach to degrowth strategy, that is, one deriving from the simpler way perspective on the global predicament. This focuses on the alarming and (...)
