The central hypothesis of the collaboration between Language and Computing (L&C) and the Institute for Formal Ontology and Medical Information Science (IFOMIS) is that the methodology and conceptual rigor of a philosophically inspired formal ontology greatly benefits application ontologies. To this end r®, L&C’s ontology, which is designed to integrate and reason across various external databases simultaneously, has been submitted to the conceptual demands of IFOMIS’s Basic Formal Ontology (BFO). With this project we aim to move beyond the level of (...) controlled vocabularies to yield an ontology with the ability to support reasoning applications. Our general procedure has been the implementation of a meta-ontological definition space in which the definitions of all the concepts and relations in LinKBase® are standardized in a framework of first-order logic. In this paper we describe how this standardization has already led to an improvement in the LinKBase® structure that allows for a greater degree of internal coherence than ever before possible. We then show the use of this philosophical standardization for the purpose of mapping external databases to one another, using LinKBase® as translation hub, with a greater degree of success than possible hitherto. We demonstrate how this offers a genuine advance over other application ontologies that have not submitted themselves to the demands of philosophical scrutiny. LinKBase® is one of the world’s largest applications-oriented medical domain ontologies, and BFO is one of the world’s first philosophically driven reference ontologies. This study assesses the retractions of scientific articles in engineering journals indexed on the Web of Science from 1945 to 2015. The data set was built based on documents containing the keywords retracted, retraction, withdrawal, or redress. We used database exploration techniques, including Structured Query Language and analysis of variance, for data analysis. We analyzed 238 retractions published by 117 journals. The most common reason for retraction was unethical research, and higher impact factors journals tended to publish more retractions. (...) The academic databases such as Scopus or Web of Science are commonly used to measure performance of universities, departments, and even single researchers. However, to what extent such databases can represent real outcomes of aforementioned units especially in the field of art and humanities where local languages and cultural phenomena play an important role is not clear. This article focuses on understanding how research in this field, as seen through the case of aesthetics in non-English speaking countries, Finland (...) in particular, is represented through major academic databases. This question is tackled by applying a data mining approach. First, we identify major academic databases, and afterwards test what is the proportion of Finnish aesthetics presented in those databases. Our approach allows us to critically look into representation of local art or humanities related research in general academic databases, and understand to what extent we can trust those sources in representing real pictures of the field. Results strengthen the well-known fact that most common academic databases draw a rather poor picture. In more particular this article shows that there are certain factors that influence analysis of the field: spread data, multilingual content, non-standard categorization, variability of venues, different publishing patterns, and unsuitable impact metrics. However, our results propose that alternative databases can be formed from university or meta-data databases. We also provide further directions for designing of such databases. (shrink)

Many research fields concerned with the processing of information contained in human faces would benefit from face stimulus sets in which specific facial characteristics are systematically varied while other important picture characteristics are kept constant. Specifically, a face database in which displayed expressions, gaze direction, and head orientation are parametrically varied in a complete factorial design would be highly useful in many research domains. Furthermore, these stimuli should be standardised in several important, technical aspects. The present article presents the (...) freely available Radboud Faces Database offering such a stimulus set, containing both Caucasian adult and children images. This face database is described both procedurally and in terms of content, and a validation study concerning its most important characteristics is presented. In the validation study, all frontal images were rated with respect to the shown facial expression, intensity of expression, clarity of expression, genuineness of expression, attractiveness, and valence. The results show very high recognition of the intended facial expressions. (shrink)

Recently, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) got much attention from researchers even though ITS educational technology began in the late 1960s and ITS is just embryonic from laboratories into the field. In this paper we outline an intelligent tutoring system for teaching basics of the databases system called (MDB). The MDB was built as education system by using the authoring tool (ITSB). MDB contains learning materials as a group of lessons for beginner level which include relational database system and (...) lessons in the process to install and set up a database. MDB system has exams for each level of the Lessons. An evaluation was done to see the effectiveness the MDB among learners and instructors. The outcome of the evaluation was promising. (shrink)

Since the inception of the Human Genome Project, human genetics has frequently been conducted through big science projects, combining academic, state and industrial methods, interests and resources. The legitimacy of such projects has been linked to national prestige and images of the nation, the purity of scientific endeavour, the entrepreneurial spirit, medical progress and the public health. A key complication in these discourses is that large-scale genetic research has yet to show major results when considered in terms of the objectives (...) used to legitimate investment and social support for these projects. The main area showing promise at present is the developing field of pharmacogenetics, which is now attracting major industry and government investment. Sociological, ethical and philosophical study of human genetic sample-based research and pharmacogenetics has developed in parallel with inquiry in the biological and biomedical sciences. This paper introduces a symposium on the ethical and social aspects of this field of biomedical research. (shrink)

Brain in a vat scenarios in analytic philosophy feature both brains and technological apparatus. The relation between specimens and technology is an interesting aspect of these scenarios, and in order to explore this relation, I contrast here two kinds of scientific collecting practices: the collection of post-mortem brains versus the compilation of digital brain atlases. This contrast highlights a novel configuration of the relation between brains and new information technologies. This new configuration is traced back to the late 1980s, which (...) saw the rise of a new kind of collection of brains, with a markedly different scope and nature: the neuroscience database. Brains are now easily captured in vivo, so that while post-mortem brains were precious and few, scanners provide an embarrassment of riches in the form of terabytes of data. The rise of the virtual brain as a new digital object for research is reliant on the development of new imaging technologies, but also on the growth of computerised tools, informatics, and electronic networks in this field. These developments contribute to an informational turn in scientific research. This article considers what is involved in the shift in type of object, from the scarce, wet, biological brain to a plentiful, digital, virtual one. It discusses the significance of this new object in terms of collections, institutions, and research practices. (shrink)

This paper focuses on the critical role of the database of words in the first stage—application—of Specific Artificial Intelligence (SAI) for Artificial Research by Application. Within this initial phase, the database functions as a structured repository of linguistic, conceptual, and categorical information relevant to a particular scientific or academic field. Words in the database are not merely stored as isolated entries but are indexed according to quantitative descriptors, taxonomic relations, functional uses, and semantic roles. The aim (...) is to enable the SAI to interpret empirical inputs, categorize observed phenomena, and retrieve comparable entries that inform hypothesis formation. This process of word-based categorization allows the SAI to match new data with existing conceptual structures, serving as the foundation for replication by Application. In scientific contexts such as medicine or astronomy, this means associating terms (e.g., symptoms, physical properties, conditions) with standardized descriptions and quantitative attributes. The paper outlines the necessary structure of such a database, including multi-layered descriptors, synonym management, and relational hierarchies that allow words to function as gateways to rational hypothesis generation. Ultimately, this linguistic architecture provides a bridge between raw empirical data and structured reasoning, laying the groundwork for subsequent stages of artificial research. (shrink)

The main features of a new online database of scientific illustrators are portrayed. We list illustrators of scientific publications of all genres (especially atlases, articles, textbooks) who were active between 1450 and 1950, thus excluding illuminators of medieval manuscripts as well as illustrators still active. Currently (Sept. 26, 2012), we already have more than 3,461 entries, with particular emphasis on anatomy, dermatology, botany, zoology, mineralogy, astronomy, and general natural history. Over the last few years, automatic facial micro-expression analysis has garnered increasing attention from experts across different disciplines because of its potential applications in various fields such as clinical diagnosis, forensic investigation and security systems. Advances in computer algorithms and video acquisition technology have rendered machine analysis of facial micro-expressions possible today, in contrast to decades ago when it was primarily the domain of psychiatrists where analysis was largely manual. Indeed, although the study of facial micro-expressions is a well-established (...) class='Hi'>field in psychology, it is still relatively new from the computational perspective with many interesting problems. In this survey, we present a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art databases and methods for micro-expressions spotting and recognition. Individual stages involved in the automation of these tasks are also described and reviewed at length. In addition, we also deliberate on the challenges and future directions in this growing field of automatic facial micro-expression analysis. (shrink)

Limited data exists that examines the reasons clinical ethics consultations in the healthcare industry are requested. To add to the literature, we have evaluated the reasons clinic ethics consults were requested at Indiana Health University (IUH) in 2023 to improve future patient care, identify quality improvement opportunities, educate fellow team members at IUH, as well as to inform research and address institutional policy changes. This information was identified through data collected using the REDCap Database and Cerner, the electronic medical (...) record that is used at IUH. Our results show 170 ethics consultations were requested between the dates of January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023, for adult patients, including inpatient and outpatient locations. Provider moral distress was identified to be the most frequent ethics issue that arose, along with patient best interest and decision-making capacity. The ethics consultation service at IUH has reviewed the data collected in this study and is actively working to improve ethics education opportunities for bedside team members, identifying recurrent ethical dilemmas, and improving the overall function of the ethics consultation service. There is scarce knowledge about the influence of the professional group, education, and age on public perspectives on the risks and benefits of forensic DNA databases. Based on data collected through an online questionnaire applied to 628 individuals in Portugal, this research fills that gap. More than three quarters of the respondents believed that the Portuguese forensic DNA database can help fight crime more efficiently and develop a swifter and more accurate justice, whereas only approximately half thought that it (...) could deter and prevent crime. Lack of security and control over access to data and the future unforeseen misuses of genetic information were the most relevant risks selected by the participants. Health care and life sciences professionals were more likely to agree with all the benefits, as opposed to those working in the field of law enforcement. More educated and older participants disagreed with benefits more often. Concerns with the risks increased with age. (shrink)

The objective of this analysis was to summarize the characteristics and trends of retractions in Chinese biomedical literature over the past 15 years. A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Retraction Watch Database and Web of Science, focusing on retracted publications authored by Chinese researchers in the biomedical field from January 2009 to October 2023. The evolving characteristics and trends of retractions were analyzed comprehensively. A total of 7509 retracted publications across 1251 journals were included, with research papers (...) comprising the majority (6708/7509, 89.33%). The number of retractions has increased significantly over the past 15 years, with a notable surge occurring after 2019. Retractions resulted from a range of complex reasons, with academic misconduct being the predominant cause (92.45%, 6942/7509). Significant differences were noted among various influential journals and in time lag associated with retractions. Compared to journals indexed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index, those indexed in the Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index exhibit a notably shorter retraction time lag. The retractions involved 34 research institutions, with East China, particularly Shandong Province, displaying the highest number of retractions, thus highlighting the prominence of scientific misconduct. The prominence of scientific research misconduct in the Chinese biomedical field underscores the need for heightened awareness, systemic improvements, and enhanced supervision to promote high-quality and stable research. Facial expressions of emotion play an important role in human social interactions. However, posed expressions of emotion are not always the same as genuine feelings. Recent research has found that facial expressions are increasingly used as a tool for understanding social interactions instead of personal emotions. Therefore, the credibility assessment of facial expressions, namely, the discrimination of genuine (spontaneous) expressions from posed (deliberate/volitional/deceptive) ones, is a crucial yet challenging task in facial expression understanding. With recent advances in computer vision and (...) machine learning techniques, rapid progress has been made in recent years for automatic detection of genuine and posed facial expressions. This paper presents a general review of the relevant research, including several spontaneous vs. posed (SVP) facial expression databases and various computer vision based detection methods. In addition, a variety of factors that will influence the performance of SVP detection methods are discussed along with open issues and technical challenges in this nascent field. (shrink)

Dupras and Bunnik’s strong statement against the normative approach of genetic exceptionalism, which can no longer be justified in the midst of multi-omic research, is of great importance fofor sound ethical reasoning about omic data. Furthermore, the authors’ explicit critique of a sole focus on genomics in normative considerations about data security and especially their nuanced depiction of sensitivity, (re)identification risks and discriminatory potential associated with epigenomic data in research and in private, commercial so-called “direct- to-consumer” epigenetic testing (as specified (...) in earlier works) might be a stepping stone for broadening the scope of normative discussions in other gene-ethics debates. Debates about therapeutic applications of tools such as CRISPR/Cas for example currently focus primarily on the genome and not on potential applications and ethical consequences of epigenome editing. Overcoming an exceptional focus on genomics and genetics by including the role of epigenomics into a primarily genome-centered normative debate is necessary to accommodate evolving biomedical fields of research. By means of conceptual clarification especially of the term “multi-omic contextualism” (Dupras and Bunnik 2021, 49) this commentary on Dupras, C., and E. M. Bunnik, "Toward a framework for assessing privacy risks in multi-omic research and databases" (The American Journal of Bioethics 2021 21 (12): 46–64. doi:10.1080/15265161.2020.1863516) argues that Dupras and Bunnik’s framework might currently be rather exceptional than contextual especially because extrinsic data properties are not primarily considered and that the framework is di-omic (genomic-epigenomic) rather than multi-omic because the meaning of multi-omics within the article appears to imply contextual factors. The highly relevant normative ideas on the problem of (re)identification risks and sensitivity of other than genomic, especially epigenomic, data presented by the authors are nevertheless, as Dupras and Bunnik assume (2021), likely to be relevant even beyond omics, for example, for imaging data, and it might thus be evaluated in future research whether multi-omic exceptionalism/contextualism could present a novel form of biological reductionism (Waggoner and Uller, "Epigenetic determinism in science and society," New Genetics and Society 2015 34 (2):177–95. doi: 10.1080/14636778.2015.10330522015), especially if primarily focused on the analysis of genomics and epigenomics. Dupras and Bunnik’s framework might then be made even stronger by making it broader. (shrink)

SOPHIS (Social Observatory of PHIlosophy of Science) is an open-access database specifically designed for the quantitative study of philosophy of science. SOPHIS integrates information on epistemic contents, their material carriers, and the individual and collective actors involved in their production and dissemination, offering a unified framework for mapping the epistemic and social landscape of the field. The present study conducted a detailed bibliometric analysis focused on research related to Heuristic Method, Research Skills and Teaching Practice within the framework of Higher Education. For this purpose, the Scopus database was used, considering publications from 2013 to 2023. The initial analysis revealed a total of 4071 relevant records. Of these, research articles constituted the largest proportion with 60.1%. Given the relevance and volume of these articles, 2488 were selected for further analysis. However, after a filtering process, it (...) was decided to work with 2363 articles. A crucial observation of the study is the prominence of the Social Sciences in this field. With 1,693 articles, the Social Sciences accounted for a significant 39.9% of the total number of publications analyzed. This data suggests a notable inclination towards the Social Sciences when addressing the above-mentioned topics in the field of higher education. It also reflects the interdisciplinarity and diversity of approaches in contemporary educational research. It is essential to note that the methodology adopted in this study, based on bibliometric tools and the Scopus database, provides a robust and up-to-date overview of trends in educational research over the last decade. These findings are crucial for scholars, researchers and practitioners in education to understand the dynamics and recent evolutions in the field. (shrink)

Access to detailed, up-to-date and available bioinformatics databases has been identified by the Commission of the European Union as a pillar for the harvesting of the potential of life-sciences and biotechnology. Unconditional access to research data, however, is squarely at odds with the primary interest of every scientist to be the first to make a discovery. This classical dilemma is specifically pressing in the data-driven field of biomedical research, where data-quantity has become a quality on its own, where speed (...) matters and patients can't wait. The dilemma urges a consideration of the principle, the practice and the law regarding access for academic researchers to unpublished research data. The consideration will include the presentation of the outcome of a global and a national survey among biomedical researchers on the accessibility of 'their' research data. The principled arguments pro unconditional access and the laws and practical considerations contra unconditional access offer conflicting perspectives and the resulting situation is compounded by the uncertainty created by the European database-right as to who holds legal title to the databases. Therefore, it is explored whether the two opposing concerns - unconditional access vs. legitimate restrictions - can be accommodated by the adoption and implementation of a general policy for access to biomedical data that greases the wheels of (European) research. Cultural similarities and differences in facial expressions have been a controversial issue in the field of facial communications. A key step in addressing the debate regarding the cultural dependency of emotional expression is to characterize the visual features of specific facial expressions in individual cultures. Here we developed an image analysis framework for this purpose using convolutional neural networks that through training learned visual features critical for classification. We analyzed photographs of facial expressions derived from two databases, each developed (...) in a different country, in which corresponding emotion labels were available. While the CNNs reached high rates of correct results that were far above chance after training with each database, they showed many misclassifications when they analyzed faces from the database that was not used for training. These results suggest that facial features useful for classifying facial expressions differed between the databases. The selectivity of computational units in the CNNs to action units of the face varied across the facial expressions. Importantly, the AU selectivity often differed drastically between the CNNs trained with the different databases. Similarity and dissimilarity of these tuning profiles partly explained the pattern of misclassifications, suggesting that the AUs are important for characterizing the facial features and differ between the two countries. The AU tuning profiles, especially those reduced by principal component analysis, are compact summaries useful for comparisons across different databases, and thus might advance our understanding of universality vs. specificity of facial expressions across cultures. Saint Basil the Great wrote one of the most important and widely acknowledged Eucharistic texts in the Eastern Orthodox Church, a liturgical anaphora that bears his name. Before the dawn of the second millennium, this was the main Eucharistic text used in Constantinople and in the territories under its authority. In the modern time of digital media, the liturgical research methods have been improved by using the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae database. The emergence of patristic and liturgical texts in this (...) novel format was able to revolutionise the field of Comparative Liturgics, allowing to very quickly find the possible internal clues, which prove the basilian authorship of the anaphora bearing St. Basil's name. By the quick and accurate computer scanning of a part of the post-Sanctus prayer, a relatively complete picture of the relatedness of vocabulary, the author's theological and ascetical nomenclature, the recurring thought patterns, parallel passages and hapax legomena, rare terms and their frequency, is obtained. CONTRIBUTION: The present article aims to demonstrate that Theology has to be connected to modern research methods because the findings of such an academic approach are helpful for the development of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, that is so well promoted by HTS Teologiese Studies/Theological Studies. Scientometrics has found many applications in describing, explaining and predicting the scientific status of researchers, educational and research groups, universities, organizations and countries in various national and international arenas. By studying the scientific products of different countries, their status in the production of science can be evaluated. Present study was conducted using a scientometrics approach and using co-word analysis and social network analysis (SNA) to investigate relationships in the field of know­ledge organization. In this regard, research indexed in web (...) of science on the topic of “know­ledge organization” has been analyzed using software including VOSviewer, Gephi, Publish or Perish. The findings of the study show that the most frequently used topics and words are know­ledge organization and classification. Also, the most valuable subject areas were identified based on the maps drawn using the closeness and centrality of indexes, taxonomy, ontology and know­ledge organization systems. Co-authorship analysis revealed that the co-authorship network is discrete and has low-density, with a total of 12,491 citations in all articles. Also, the most prolific author is Hjorland, followed by Smiraglia and Dahlberg. using the co-word map of know­ledge organization, policymakers can plan appropriately through the know­ledge of the research and thematic status of know­ledge organization. This paper examines the role of the Morton Thiokol engineers in the decisions surrounding the launch of the Challenger, particularly with reference to an analysis of this event by Edward Tufte. The engineers at Morton Thiokol recommended against the launch of Challenger because the projected launch temperature between 26°F to 29°F was far outside their field database of successful launches. The engineers had asked for, but not received, data necessary to determine the cause of massive blow-by on the (...) launch the previous January, and they had informed their managers and NASA that continuing flights could be catastrophic if the cause of the problems with the launches was not discovered. The authors conclude that the engineers thus did what they were ethically as well as professionally obligated to do. (shrink)

Over the past decades, genetic profiling technologies have had substantial impacts on criminal justice systems worldwide, driving a broad research agenda around their social, political, and bioethical consequences. By analyzing the Brazilian forensic DNA database, this chapter shifts the investigative gaze of this field of study, mainly focused on the US-Western Europe axis, toward the country with the highest incarceration rates in absolute terms in the so-called Global South. Against a background marked by the over-representation of black and (...) marginalized populations in the prison system, the radical precariousness of correctional facilities, and the widespread use of police violence as an instrument for producing criminal evidence, forensic DNA databases were officially presented in Brazil as a strategy for the “techno-scientific modernization” of the country’s criminal justice system. Drawing on interviews with both forensic geneticists and prisoners, official documents, and statistical information on the Banco Nacional de Perfis Genéticos (National Database of Genetic Profiles), I demonstrate the specific ways in which forensic genetics articulates with the historical inequalities and institutional violence that guide and qualify the ordinary functioning of the Brazilian criminal justice system. In bioethics, the first decade of the twenty-first century was characterized by the emergence of interest in the ethical, legal, and social aspects of neuroscience research. At the same time an ongoing extension of the topics and phenomena addressed by neuroscientists was observed alongside its rise as one of the leading disciplines in the biomedical science. One of these phenomena addressed by neuroscientists and moral psychologists was the neural processes involved in moral decision-making. Today both strands of research are often (...) addressed under the label of neuroethics. Portable MRI for neuroimaging research in remote field settings can reach populations previously excluded from research, including communities underrepresented in current brain neuroscience databases and marginalized in health care. However, research conducted far from a medical institution and potentially in populations facing barriers to health care access raises the question of how to manage incidental findings (IFs) that may warrant clinical workup. Interest in research integrity (RI) has proliferated and gained prominence, particularly within the past decade – both in policy and academic environments. Research on RI might be considered an emerging research field, with dedicated journals and conferences. However, it is still characterized by fragmentation and is often carried out by researchers belonging to other fields (e.g. medicine, psychology, sociology, business, law, bioethics), thereby bringing varied approaches to the study of RI. The implications of this for the knowledge produced are, (...) however, still understudied. Our study examines the place of theory in the shaping of the field of research on RI and how the choices of theoretical frameworks in given studies shape the logic of inquiry. To provide an inclusive overview of the relevant research and the theoretical variation underpinning it, we conducted systematic searches of SCOPUS, PubMed, and Web of Science (WoS) databases for English-language articles published between 2010 and 2023, based on a pre-defined set of search terms. The study finds that the theoretical landscape is highly heterogenous. It is, to some extent, dominated by grounded theory, personality psychology and institutionalism, but also engages a very broad scope of other theoretical perspectives, including social psychology, psychoanalytic theory, and narrative analysis. Through closer analysis of a group of studies that share focus on the relationship between pressure and research misconduct, this review elucidates the far-reaching implications that the choice of theory has on every aspect of an individual study and the field of research on RI overall. In the 60+ years that the modern concept of informed consent has been around, researchers in various fields of practice, especially medical ethics, have developed new models to overcome theoretical and practical problems. While (systematic) literature reviews of such models exist within given fields (e.g., genetic screening), this article breaks ground by analyzing academic literature on consent models across fields. Three electronic research databases (Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) were searched for publications mentioning informed consent models. The titles, (...) abstracts, and if applicable, full publications were screened and coded. The resulting data on fields, models, and themes were then analyzed. We scanned 300 sources from three databases to find 207 uniquely named consent models, and created a network visualization displaying which models occur primarily in one field, and which models overlap between fields. This analysis identifies trends in the consent debate in different fields, as well as common goals of consent models. The most frequently occurring consent models are identified and defined. The analysis contributes toward a cross-disciplinary “consent design toolkit” and highlights that there are more interrelationships between models and fields than are acknowledged in the literature. Where some models are designed to solve distinctively field-specific issues and are specific to biomedical ethics, some may be adaptable and applicable for other fields including engineering and design. This qualitative study investigates the educational background and fields of expertise of faculty members in English translation programs at the bachelor's degree level in state universities of Türkiye. Despite the prevalence of these programs across Turkish universities, a discrepancy emerges between the faculty members' doctoral qualifications and the specialized field of Translation Studies. The research aims to reveal the academic landscape of these programs by examining the doctoral disciplines of faculty members, utilizing data primarily sourced from the YÖK (Council (...) of Higher Education) Atlas Database and the YÖK (Council of Higher Education) Academic Database. When information is unavailable in the database above, university websites serve as supplementary data sources. This methodological approach enables a comprehensive analysis of the extent to which academic program qualifications align with the field of Translation Studies. Preliminary findings indicate a significant underrepresentation of faculty with doctoral degrees in Translation Studies, suggesting a potential misalignment between program expertise and the specialized training needs of translation programs. This study underscores the crucial link between the program's field-specific expertise and the quality of training, highlighting the need for policy interventions aimed at bolstering the recruitment and development of academically qualified faculty in the discipline of Translation Studies. The implications of this research extend beyond academia, informing policymakers and educational administrators about the importance of aligning educational offerings with program qualifications to enhance the educational outcomes of translation programs in Türkiye. Synthetic biology is designing and creating biological tools and systems for useful purposes. It uses knowledge from biology, such as biotechnology, molecular biology, biophysics, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and other disciplines, such as engineering, mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering. It is recognized as both a branch of science and technology. The scope of synthetic biology ranges from modifying existing organisms to gain new properties to creating a living organism from non-living components. Synthetic biology has many applications in important fields such as (...) energy, chemistry, medicine, environment, agriculture, national security, and nanotechnology. The development of synthetic biology also raises ethical and social debates. This article aims to identify the place of ethics in synthetic biology. In this context, the theoretical ethical debates on synthetic biology from the 2000s to 2020, when the development of synthetic biology was relatively faster, were analyzed using the systematic review method. Based on the results of the analysis, the main ethical problems related to the field, problems that are likely to arise, and suggestions for solutions to these problems are included. The data collection phase of the study included a literature review conducted according to protocols, including planning, screening, selection and evaluation. The analysis and synthesis process was carried out in the next stage, and the main themes related to synthetic biology and ethics were identified. Searches were conducted in Web of Science, Scopus, PhilPapers and MEDLINE databases. Theoretical research articles and reviews published in peer-reviewed journals until the end of 2020 were included in the study. The language of publications was English. According to preliminary data, 1,453 publications were retrieved from the four databases. Considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 58 publications were analyzed in the study. Ethical debates on synthetic biology have been conducted on various issues. In this context, the ethical debates in this article were examined under five themes: the moral status of synthetic biology products, synthetic biology and the meaning of life, synthetic biology and metaphors, synthetic biology and knowledge, and expectations, concerns, and problem solving: risk versus caution. Introduction: Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a profoundly transformative tool in numerous fields of knowledge, and its application in legal and forensic medicine is opening a new chapter in forensic science. The development of the “JL-IDIF” system by the Forensic Research Institute (IDIF) has been recognized as an innovative step, setting precedents for the use of advanced technology for the recording and analysis of forensic data. AI represents an unprecedented opportunity to transform legal and forensic medicine, making these processes (...) faster, more efficient, and more accurate. Methodology. An information search was conducted from January to May 2025. Information was collected from scientific articles, books, technical reports, and publications in specialized media, using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and websites of forensic and government institutions. This approach allowed for a comprehensive and well-founded synthesis of the available information. Conclusions. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed multiple areas of medicine, and its incursion into forensic and legal medicine marks the beginning of a new era in forensic practice. This review has shown that, while technological advances have demonstrated great potential, significant limitations remain related to data quality, the need for external validation, and the availability of adequate technological infrastructure. In Bolivia, initiatives such as the JL-IDIF project or the experimental implementation of generative AI models demonstrate the interest and initial capacity to explore these emerging technologies. AI should not be viewed as a substitute for human judgment, but rather as a powerful tool that enhances the work of experts, allowing them to focus on critical interpretation and decision-making. Introduction: This article addresses the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the fields of neurocommunication and media literacy. Based on the increasing permeability of ICT and AI in all sectors of activity and levels of society, it seeks to understand how AI is changing the ways of communication and information processing. Objective: The main objective is to develop a detailed analysis of the implication of AI in neurocommunication and media literacy, identifying current applications and evaluating its effects and potential (...) to transform these areas. Materials and methods: The methodology used consists of a systematic literature review, selecting relevant studies from academic databases such as PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and Google Scholar. The articles, published between 2019 and 2024, were analyzed to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities in the integration of AI in neurocommunication studies and media literacy practices. Results: The results suggest that AI can be successfully integrated in several sectors. In healthcare, improving medical diagnoses; in commerce, personalizing the shopping experience; and in education, adapting learning to the individual needs of students. In addition, fields such as neuromarketing stand out, where AI optimizes understanding and engagement in communication. Conclusions: AI is redefining the boundaries of neurocommunication and media literacy, improving human–machine interaction and enabling more intuitive interfaces. Advances in AI offer new insights into understanding the brain’s communication processes and have significant potential for medical rehabilitation, enhanced learning, and social interaction. Collaboration between AI and neurocommunication promises not only a greater understanding of the human mind but also the development of technologies that are more adaptive and empathetic to the complexities of human behavior. In Brazil, the CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) provides grants, funds and fellowships to productive scientists to support their investigations. They are ranked and categorized into four hierarchical levels ranging from PQ 1A (the highest) to PQ 1D (the lowest). Few studies, however, report and analyse scientific productivity in different sub-fields of Biomedical Sciences (BS), e.g., Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Biophysics and Physiology. In fact, systematic comparisons of productivity among the PQ 1 categories within the above sub-fields are lacking (...) in the literature. Here, the scientific productivity of 323 investigators receiving PQ 1 fellowships (A to D levels) in these sub-fields of BS was investigated. The Scopus database was used to compile the total number of articles, citations, h-index values and authorship positions (first-, co- or last-listed author) in the most cited papers by researchers granted CNPq fellowships. We found that researchers from Pharmacology had the best performance for all of the parameters analysed, followed by those in Biochemistry. There was great variability in scientific productivity within the PQ 1A level in all of the sub-fields of BS, but not within the other levels (1B, 1C and 1D). Analysis of the most cited papers of PQ 1(A–D) researchers in Pharmacology revealed that the citations of researchers in the 1C and 1D levels were associated with publications with their senior supervisors, whereas those in the 1B level were less connected with their supervisors in comparison to those in 1A. Taken together, these findings suggest that the scientific performance of PQ 1A researchers in BS is not homogenous. In our opinion, parameters such as the most cited papers without the involvement of Ph.D. and/or post-doctoral supervisors should be used to make decisions regarding any given researcher’s fellowship award level. A scoping review was conducted to explore the metaphors and related expressions older adults use to describe extremely stressful events that may lead to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Complex PTSD (CPTSD), Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), or Adjustment Disorder (AjD). Relevant databases from psychology, gerontology, and related fields were searched. In addition, relevant references found in included papers were considered. Inclusion criteria were: qualitative study, sample of older adults (age 65+), and focus on maladaptive rather than adaptive psychological aspects. Eleven studies (...) focusing on PTSD, 5 on CPTSD, 13 on PGD, and 10 on AjD were included. Metaphors and other expressions related to extremely stressful events were then extracted and analyzed. Multiple linguistic expressions to describe extremely stressful events and stress-related symptoms were identified. The aim of this article is to offer a view of the current status of women in medical physics and biomedical engineering, while focusing on solutions towards gender balance and providing examples of current activities carried out at national and international levels. The International Union of Physical and Engineering Scientists in Medicine is committed to advancing women in science and health and has several initiatives overseen by the Women in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering Task Group. Some of the main (...) strategies proposed by the Task Group to attain gender balance are: (a) identify and promote female role models that achieve successful work-life balance, (b) establish programs to develop female leaders, (c) create opportunities for females to increase the international visibility within the scientific community, and (d) establish archives and databases of women in STEM. Conflicts within the tsetse fly belt revealed a strong correlation between the dynamics of bovine trypanosomosis and the insurgency involving farmers and herders in Nigeria and parts of West Africa. This study examined the history, causes and influence of farmers-herdsmen conflicts on banditry, terrorism and food security as it relates to the epidemiology of African animal trypanosomosis (AAT). A combination of literature database searches, semi-structured questionnaires, and mathematical modeling was employed. The study found that transhumance contributes significantly to conflicts (...) between farmers and herdsmen. An average of 6.46 persons per attack were reported between 2005 and 2021. Only 8.4 $$\%$$ (95 $$\%$$ CI: 5.0 $$-$$ 12.9) of farmers and 18.2 $$\%$$ (95 $$\%$$ CI: 12.4 $$-$$ 25.4) of herdsmen have engaged in conflict resolution efforts. The study shows that both conflict and the spread of trypanosomosis can be effectively controlled when $$R_0 < 1$$, ensuring that the sub-population remains in the basin of attraction of the trypanosomosis-conflict-free equilibrium ( $$T_{0c}$$ ). The partial derivative of the basic reproduction number, $$R_0$$, with respect to improved conflict resolution, suggests that halting transhumance can prevent a portion of the cattle recruitment rate ( $$\Lambda_c$$ ) from becoming infected with AAT. Climate change exacerbates these issues, leading to settlement and resettlement strategies within the fly belt regions. The model indicates that the basic reproduction number can only be reduced to less than one ( $$R_0 < 1$$ ) to become globally asymptotically stable if there is effective conflict resolution involving both farmers and herders. The study advocates for the establishment of ranching in tsetse-free zones with adequate social amenities, improved marketing strategies for animals and animal products led by government agencies through public-private partnerships, the banning of open grazing, and strict enforcement of policies against violators. Among the many forms of research misconduct, publishing fraudulent data is considered to be serious where the confidence and validity of the research is detrimentally undermined. In this study, the trend of 303 retracted publications from 44 authors (with more than three retracted publications each) was analysed. The results showed that only 6.60% of the retracted publications were single-authored and the discovery of fraudulent publications had reduced from 52.24 months (those published before the year 2000) to 33.23 months (those published (...) on the year 2000 and onwards). It appears that with the widely accessible public databases like PubMed, fraudulent publications can be detected more easily. The different approaches adopted by authors who had previous publications retracted are also discussed herein. (shrink)

BackgroundEthical decision-making in nursing significantly impacts population health, yet systematic analyses of factors influencing this process remain scarce.AimThe aim is to systematically evaluate factors influencing ethical decision-making in clinical care and provide a reference for follow-up nursing ethics education, medical institution management, and policy research in this field.Research DesignThis study was conducted using a mixed-methods systematic review design. In December 2024, we searched PubMed, Web of Science, Wanfang Data, VIP Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure for studies on (...) factors influencing nursing ethical decision-making. The search covered records from each database’s inception to 1 December 2024. After literature screening and quality assessment, quantitative and qualitative data were extracted following the Joanna Briggs Institute Mixed-Methods Review guidelines. Core influencing factors were identified through thematic synthesis.Ethical ConsiderationsEthical review was not required for this study.ResultsSeventeen studies were included (13 quantitative and 4 qualitative). Thematic integration revealed four categories of influencing factors: nurse-related factors (e.g., professional identity perception), patient-related factors (e.g., clinical condition changes), team dynamics (e.g., collaboration among healthcare providers), and decision-making context (e.g., workload intensity), totaling 17 specific factors.ConclusionNursing ethical decision-making is influenced by personal, patient-related, team-related, and contextual factors. Strategies to enhance this process include improving nurses’ ethical competence, fostering teamwork, optimizing decision-making environments, and integrating findings into clinical practice. This article outlines the findings of a pioneering bibliometric analysis of 764 high-value articles on early Islam from the Web of Science (WoS) database and unveils critical trends. This study, which notably highlights increased academic activities, particularly (...) interdisciplinary expansion into archaeology and related fields, demonstrates a contemporary upsurge in scholarly engagement within humanities and social sciences. Global contributions from 60 countries, led by the USA, showcase an international landscape, and English emerges as the predominant language. (Der) Islam-Zeitschrift für Geschichte und Kultur des Islamischen Orients and Journal of Archaeological Science Reports stand out as the most prolific journals across all fields, followed by Journal of Archaeological Science. This highlights the growing significance of archaeology in the research on early Islam. The top authors with the most publications N. Schibille, I. Taxel, and G. Bar-oz and most cited authors I. C. Freestone, J. Henderson, and Y. Avni shape the field. Financial support from organizations like the European Research Council (ERC), the Spanish Government and the Israel Science Foundation signals strategic investments in Islamic studies. Lastly, a keyword analysis emphasizes prevalent themes, such as Islam, early Islam, early Islamic period, and Qur’ān, providing a concise snapshot of the field’s contemporary focus. These insights underscore the rising international importance of Islamic research. Shared decision-making (SDM) is a collaborative process involving patients, their support networks, and the healthcare team, where patients are given a central role in making decisions about their health through effective communication. Since its introduction in the medical field, artificial intelligence (AI) has been increasingly used to support the SDM process. This systematic review is aimed at assessing the precise relationship between AI systems and the SDM process, highlighting both the potential for improvement as well as flaws. The systematic (...) review followed the PRISMA methodology. Three databases were used to search for relevant literature: PubMed, Scopus (limited to the Medical field), and Web of Science (all fields). Two filtering rounds were performed, one on titles and abstracts, and one on the full-text of the articles. Extracted data included year, medical specialty/field, article type, AI method, developed or analyzed AI, clinical setting, use of AI, biases or limitations, funds, competing interests, ethical concerns, and algorithmic transparency/fairness. The authors also summarized the objective and contribution of each paper. The database search retrieved 927 records after duplicate removal. After the filtering rounds, 66 studies met the inclusion criteria; mostly articles published in 2024 (26.9%). Medical specialties were reported in 61.5% of studies, most frequently oncology (15.3%), orthopedics (7.7%), and cardiology (6.4%). Conceptual papers predominated (38.4%), followed by observational studies (20 reports) and reviews (18 reports). Almost half of the included articles (48.7%) did not specify an AI method. Among those that did, machine learning (28 reports) was most common, followed by others such as deep learning (9 reports) and large language models (6 reports). The objectives and contributions of the papers were distilled and discussed, including topics such as decision aids and conversation support, value consideration in recommender systems, time efficiency and aid in non-clinical tasks, black-box AI, fairness, reliability, and trust, human empathy, training and education, and design. The main risks that AI presents to the SDM process were identified in communication failures, lack of consideration for patient preferences, and absence of co-designing. Nevertheless, AI holds significant promise: it can increase clinical efficiency, contribute to chronic disease management, and enable patients to engage in self-monitoring and treatment adherence, thereby supporting sustained participation in their care. AI can also act as a decision aid and enrich patient–clinician dialog by clarifying options and aligning recommendations with individual values, ultimately fostering more collaborative decision-making. AI shall not be framed as a “negative” force for SDM, but rather should be harnessed for the opportunities it presents. Research and education should focus on overcoming the identified obstacles. Sustainability in healthcare is getting considerable research attention as systems worldwide tend to balance environmental, social, and economic factors. In this context, digital technologies have demonstrated significant potential to enhance engagement among different consumer groups across various industries. Recognizing the importance of patient engagement and its impact on patient–doctor relationships for sustainable value creation in healthcare (i.e., when creating value for all stakeholders contributes to a sustainable society), this paper aims to investigate the extent to which a technological factor stimulates (...) and fosters the engagement of patients in their own healthcare journey and how this favors long-term benefits' generation. With the aim to identify and map the available evidence, we conduct a scoping literature review. To disclose the current state of research in the studied field, we performed a literature search with the Scopus database. A total number of 76 studies published up to October 2023 were included in our literature review. By synthesizing the existing knowledge base and highlighting the role of digital technologies in fostering sustainable value creation in healthcare through improved patient engagement, this study addresses the identified research gap. As a result, this research provides three valuable contributions: (1) theoretically, this manuscript proposes a novel framework that advances the academic understanding of the potential of digital technologies to enhance patient engagement and support sustainability practices in healthcare; (2) practically, this study offers a comprehensive guidance to managers to enable effective adoption of technologies in clinical practice; (3) finally, this work suggests strategies to promote more inclusive and sustainable healthcare destined for all practitioners and policymakers. This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of ten Turkish theology journals indexed in the “Religion” category in Web of Science (WoS). The main objective of the study is to examine the research performance of these journals in the international academic platform, to evaluate their visibility and impact, and to offer some solutions. As in other fields, bibliometric analyses has become increasingly important in the field of theology in recent years. Such analyses help to monitor and measure publication quality (...) as well as academic performance. However, there is no comprehensive bibliometric analysis on theological journals in Türkiye. In this context, this study aims to determine the international visibility and impact of WoS-indexed theological journals in Türkiye. The study is expected to contribute to similar bibliometric analyses in the field of theology and to fill the gaps in the literature. All data used in the study were obtained from the WoS database. The raw data extracted from the database were checked and made ready for analysis after the necessary data cleaning. Bibliometrix (R software package) and VOSviewer, which are professional applications in this field, were used to perform bibliometric analysis of these data. The data were evaluated based on various metrics, such as the number and type of published articles, number of citations, and author collaboration. In addition, details such as the annual growth rates of the journals and the most cited articles were also analyzed. The key findings of the study are as follows: As a result of the profiles and comparative analyses of the journals, it was found that Türkiye is one of the leading countries with ten journals, ranking sixth among the countries with journals indexed in the WoS “Religion” category. The inclusion of new theological journals in the WoS index in recent years shows that Türkiye is well positioned in international academic journalism in the field of theology, with a growing influence through collective experience. The fact that all the journals are open access (through the DergiPark system) enables the articles in these journals to reach a wide readership in the international academic community. The national and international collaborative networks of authors publishing in these journals, influential articles and the development processes of the journals were analyzed in detail. Accordingly, names such as Ali Ayten, Ayfer Gedikli and Seyfettin Erdoğan stand out among the most influential writers. Sakarya Univ., Cumhuriyet Univ., and Erciyes Univ. are the prominent institutions in terms of the total number of publications. At the same time, Sakarya Univ., Marmara Univ., and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Univ. are the institutions with the highest number of cooperation networks. While Azerbaijan, the USA and Kyrgyzstan stand out as countries with international cooperation in publishing, the article emphasizes the need to increase the rate of publications with international cooperation and the importance of journals being included in higher indexes. In addition, the lack of studies on gender distribution analysis was highlighted and the importance of this issue for journals in the future was mentioned. The study mentions the total publication-citation ratio and the cumulative number of publications of the journals by years and includes the most influential articles. Again, the language of publication in these journals was examined and it was found that articles written in English were slightly more effective and had a higher citation potential. The study also carried out keyword analyses of these articles. Issues such as which topics are covered more, which concepts are used more frequently, and how often they are used are discussed. All these findings show how the theological journals in Türkiye have gained a place in the academic community worldwide. As a result, the international academic performance of Turkish theological journals has been comprehensively evaluated and it has been revealed that these journals have an important place in the academic community.
