Sadler, Pilot Project Coordinator to Sonya Brown, WAC Activity Director, Fayetteville State University, June 28 2011. -/- A Pilot program focused on improving student performance in carrying out Close Readings in humanities-based discipline courses was developed and implemented under the auspices of Writing Across the Curriculum and Title III at Fayetteville State University in Winter and Spring 2011. Five faculty were involved in the Pilot, myself as the coordinator, and four other faculty from four (...) different disciplines as participants. -/- The central idea behind the Pilot was that by focusing on the lower-order skills which are scaffolded as components into the higher-order activity of Close Reading of texts, and redesigning courses to emphasize development of these lower-order skills, student performances in Close Readings would also be improved. This did turn out to be the case. Most of the supporting data is qualitative rather than quantitative. -/- It is recommended that similar activities be continued, but that participating faculty be required to provide much more prescriptively structured and detailed assessment data and information about their course design. In this paper, we present an especially effective tool for helping students to learn and apply the skills of critical reasoning. Our Writing Portfolio Project is a set of nine progressively staged writing assignments that guide students through the formulation and development of an argumentative paper. The set of assignments are designed to reinforce, reintroduce, and repeat critical reasoning skills. This Teacher Education Project is an intervention research aimed at creating new school roles for educating students as readers and writers as well as citizens. The methodological framework was based on Vygotsky’s discussions of method as praxis, as well as on both the Marxist practical–materialistic–revolutionary activity and Engeström’s extensions of Cultural Historical Activity Theory. The work at school was motivated by students’ limited awareness of reading and writing. The goal was to involve the school as a community in understanding (...) and transforming the ways in which reading and writing were addressed in classrooms. The methodology used for organizing and carrying out the project was devised so as to allow for three activity systems that partially interact with their objects – that is, reading and writing as tools for teaching-learning in different areas in order to constitute students as citizens. However, for this paper, we will focus solely on the Teacher Education Activity System, which we termed Teacher Support Team. Three episodes are discussed in this paper: Two video sessions with the Teacher Support Team, the first of which took place in 2010, and the second in 2011; and a classroom reading class session that was videotaped in 2011 as part of the Teacher Support Team work. The theoretical and practical work developed was targeted at creating a mutual Zone of Proximal Development that supported teachers, coordinators, and the principal, through the appropriation of reading and writing as processes. The results show that the organization of the project as interrelated activity systems enhanced the entire school’s prospects of appropriating the reading and writing teaching-learning processes, by focusing on the same object, in the diverse systems that framed the project. Research skills are important for university graduates, but little is known about undergraduates’ motivation for research. In this study, self-efficacy beliefs and intrinsic motivation for several research activities were measured three times during an undergraduate research project. In order to promote self-efficacy for writing and collaboration, a collaboration script was developed and tested on half of the students. Twelve students were interviewed three times to gather in-depth information about motivational and self-efficacy beliefs. All measures except intrinsic motivation for research (...) increased significantly during the project. Interview results suggest that enactive mastery and positive social interdependence promoted self-efficacy. Feelings of relatedness seemed to promote intrinsic motivation for writing. Lack of autonomy and low perceived relevance may explain why motivation for research remained stable. The script had no impact on self-efficacy beliefs. Relatedness,... (shrink)

The editors, both former students of Lynch, provide a cogent summary of his career and of the role he played in shaping and transforming the American urban design profession during the 1950s, the 1960s, and the 1970s. Each of the seven thematic groupings of writings and projects that follow begins with a short introduction explaining their content and their background. The essays in part I focus on the premises of Lynch's work: his novel reading of large-scale built environments and the notion that the design of an urban landscape should be as meaningful and intimate as the natural landscape. In part II, excerpts from Lynch's travel journals reveal his early ideas on how people perceive and interpret their surroundings—ideas that culminated in his seminal work, The Image of the City. This part of the book also presents Lynch's experiments with children and his assessment of environmental-perception research. ArgumentThis essay considers the metaphors of projection in Hugo Münsterberg's theory of cinema spectatorship. Münsterberg (1863–1916), a German born and educated professor of psychology at Harvard University, turned his attention to cinema only a few years before his untimely death at the age of fifty-three. But he brought to the new medium certain lasting preoccupations. This account begins with the contention that Münsterberg's intervention in the cinema discussion pursued his well-established strategy of pitting a laboratory model against a clinical one, (...) in this case the “master-trope” of early cinema a spectatorship drawn from hysteria, hypnosis, and related phenomena like double-consciousness. Münsterberg's laboratory-oriented account also flowed from his account of cinema technology as an outgrowth of the apparatus of his own discipline of experimental psycho-physiology, which entailed a model of cinema spectatorship continuous with the epistemological setting of laboratory relations. I argue that inThe Photoplayand related writings projection functioned in three registers: material, psychological, and philosophical. Münsterberg's primary concern was with psychological projection, where he drew upon his own work in experimental aesthetics to articulate an account of how the basic automatisms of cinema produce a state of oscillation between immersion and distraction. I show how Münsterberg's experimental aesthetics drew upon German doctrines of aesthetic empathy, orEinfühlung, which Münsterberg sought to modify in accordance with the dynamic and temporal characteristics of psycho-physiological experiment. Finally, I argue that Münsterberg's cinema theory was enfolded in his action or double-standpoint theory, in which the transcendental self posits the material, objective conditions of laboratory experience as a means to know itself. This philosophical projection explained cinema's uncanny ability to suspend ordinary perceptions of space, time, and causality. It also made cinema uniquely suited for the philosophical emancipation of a popular mass audience. (shrink)

Traditionally, the study of the mind and of its limits and capabilities was the domain of philosophy, however in the first decades of the twentieth century practitioners of the emergent human and social sciences were increasingly competing with philosophers in this field: ethnologists, sociologists, psychologists and historians of science were all claiming to study 'how people think'. Scholars, including (...) Gaston Bachelard, Georges Canguilhem, Leon Brunschvicg, Lucien Levy-Bruhl, Lucien Febvre, Abel Rey, Alexandre Koyre and Helene Metzger were all investigating the mind historically and participating in shared research projects. Yet, as they have since been appropriated by the different disciplines, literature on their findings has so far failed to recognise the connections between their research and their importance in intellectual history.In this exemplary book, Cristina Chimisso reconstructs the world of these intellectuals and the key debates in the philosophy of mind, particularly between those who studied specific mentalities by employing prevalently historical and philological methods, and those who thought it possible to write a history of the mind, outlining the evolution of ways of thinking that had produced the modern mentality. This analytic autoethnographic study explores the rhetorical and emotional dimensions of writing about limitations in academic research. Drawing on eight authored manuscripts, over 20 peer review reflections, annotated drafts, research memos, and professional correspondence, the inquiry examines how limitation-writing is shaped by the interplay of scholarly identity, institutional expectations, and disciplinary norms. Guided by the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research and analyzed through reflexive thematic analysis, five interrelated themes emerged: the pressure to appear rigorous, justification as a defense (...) mechanism, reviewer reflections, shifting toward acknowledgment, and evolving within academic institutional Culture. Findings suggest that early-career researchers, based on my experiences, may tend to soften, omit, or rationalize limitations to project methodological rigor and preserve academic credibility. These tendencies appear reinforced by institutional pressures and editorial expectations that implicitly reward completeness over critical transparency. Critical incidents in the peer review process served as turning points, encouraging more honest, vulnerable, and reflective engagement with limitations. Drawing from my dual role as both author and reviewer, I interrogated how normative academic behaviors are simultaneously challenged and reinforced. This study contributes to ongoing conversations on scholarly transparency, research ethics, and the emotional labor of academic writing. A cultural shift is proposed in how limitations are taught, written, and reviewed, one that centers reflexivity, epistemological humility, and authorial authenticity. Implications extend to graduate education, peer review training, and institutional policies that shape how researchers navigate the tension between acknowledgment and appearance in scholarly publishing. This is a collective writing project that is part of the larger design of Infantologies, Infanticides and Infantilizations; a quartet that explores the philosophy of infants from thematic perspectives, that puts infants at the centre of our reflections, and that encourages a different academic style of thinking.

This paper derives from an exploration of the ways in which the letters of Holocaust writer Etty Hillesum, which are seemingly resistant to many of the interests of current trauma theory, can be read in relation to contemporary writing on testimonial. In particular, the three theorists I shall discuss here, Derrida, Caruth and Irigaray, directly address Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle, a central text in the current refiguring of trauma. This paper traces the ways in which Hillesum's letters can (...) be read across the theoretical accounts. An interpretation of Hillesum's writing emerges in which the conventional emphasis on the mystical aspect of her texts is reinterpreted in terms of Caruth's emphasis on the life drive. Viewed as forging a creative language of departure, Hillesum's letters are situated in a central relation to the most recent developments in the theoretical discourse around testimony. (shrink)

There is now an increasing body of knowledge on creative practice-based doctorates especially in Australia and the United Kingdom. A particular focus in recent years has been on the written examinable component or exegesis, and a number of studies have provided important information about change and stability in the form and nature of the exegesis and its relationship to the creative project. However, we still know relatively little about the pedagogical practices that supervisors use to support these students’ development as (...) scholarly writers, nor of how supervisors view ‘writing’ in relation to the creative practice components of the degree endeavour. This paper draws on data from a recent study of supervision in creative practice higher research degrees and it highlights the transformative nature of writing for the development of creative practice research scholars in the context of competing discourses on research writing. In contrast to institutional silencing of writing, the study relates numerous examples of effective writing-rich supervisory pedagogies illustrating how successful supervisors work with their students to bring their creative projects into articulation. Durante el proyecto se elaboró una rúbrica de evaluación que es la base que se ha tomado para el análisis de textos. Derrida’s Introduction to Husserl’s 1936, The Origin of Geometry sought to reveal in “all of its enigmatic depth” the “space of a transcendental historicity,” that is, deploy the inherent paradoxality at work within the very project of a genetic phenomenology which is wholly concentrated and oriented on posing the question in direction of the “origin,” and thus of the “originary foundation” [Urstiftung] for the formation of meaning in and through history. Indeed, and following Husserl’s genetic approach, Derrida will engage phenomenology (...) in explicating both how idealities have entered in history for the first time and how, by this “first time,” these have constituted themselves as omnitemporal. Always underlying the radicality of Husserl’s position, Derrida also purports the need for phenomenology to deploy both a concrete and creative, foundational and innovative genesis for and of meaning, and thus a transcendental historicity. Derrida’s reading thus reveals a mutual contamination between the transcendental and the empirical which at once informs and overwhelms the sedimentations of meaning in history and thereby deploys how and why the role and the function of writing always operates both within the frame of a transcendental questioning and already beyond this transcendental horizon. Here thus lies one of the central aporetic effects of Derrida’s reading of the role and the function of writing in Husserl’s The Origin of Geometry: writing is seen as always essential in constituting a transcendental historicity and as already secondary within a constituted history. Otherwise said: writing always constitutes the sedimentations, the possibility and the actuality, of meaning in history and already shows itself as a sediment in history. Following the role and the function of writing which Derrida will radicalise and aporetise in Husserl’s 1936 text, and where the deconstructive idea of supplementarity will unquestionably arise, we will, in turn, develop what we would call here an aporology of history where the question of singularity––singularity of historical “events” spurring on an aporetic “logic” of spectrality incessantly awakening a surviving responsibility––can be reformulated and shifted from “Where lies and from where arises the constitution of history; how may this constitution sediment itself as and in history?” to “What remains or what is left, which sedimentations, of history from history to yet come to history?”. Mauro Carbone’s interpretation of Proust is grounded in his interpretation of Deleuze and Merleau-Ponty. The aim of this paper is to call this interpretation into question by arguing that neither Deleuze nor Merleau-Ponty provides the basis for an interpretation of Proust that concentrates on the role of expression understood as ‘translation’ within his literary project. What is precluded is the possibility of an identification of expression with the process of writing. This is, however, exactly what an interpretation of Proust (...) demands. (shrink)

This paper examines texts written by, or in collaboration with, female ex-members of the Italian left-wing armed organization, the Red Brigades. The corpus differs from male-authored or male-centred texts in that issues relating to identity and selfhood lie at the very heart of the project of narrating the terrorist past; the primary concern of Italian women's post-terrorist narration is not to narrate the experience of belonging to an armed organization, but to construct a new identity distinct from a pre-existing self (...) identified exclusively with the transgressive experience of political violence. I consider the corpus in the light of a number of critical problems posed both by the specificity of female perpetration and by the dearth of theoretical writings on perpetrator trauma more generally. I identify in each text an acute anxiety about the very act of speech or narration and find that, in order to circumvent the perceived prohibition on speech, the women of the Red Brigades subtly insinuate into their life writing a discourse of alterity bordering on subalternity that obscures the boundary between victim and perpetrator. The unacknowledged slippage between discourses of perpetration and victimization is explored in relation to Ruth Leys’ critique of Cathy Caruth's formulation of trauma as the wound that cries out through the voice of the victim. The paper concludes by questioning whether perpetrator trauma can ever be articulated as such and by considering the implications of that question for traumatized perpetrator and victimized society alike. This article examines how the textual rendering of the non-Western Other in Business Ethics in the West often remains a misrepresentation. Informed by the Derridean ethico-political project on writing/violence and ethics, the article analyzes the writing of this Other in Western academic production of Business Ethics, through a consideration of writing on the Buddhist doctrine of karma. It shows that this writing makes the Other’s presence in (writing) Business Ethics an absence–presence. The article argues that (...) what is absent in such writing/text is not the Other, but the context in which the Other exists. Calling this absence–presence the “contextual violence of text”, the article shows how the Orientalist or arche-violence/writing amalgamates with Business Ethics where the latter appears to be an apparatus of founding mythic violence. Nevertheless, it does not claim that the present aporia of writing the non-Western Other in Western academic production of Business Ethics makes ethics impossible. Rather, it shows that this same writing/violence opens up a passage to ethics/the Other that is nevertheless a non-ethical opening of ethics. In conclusion, the article argues that writing the non-Western Other in writing Business Ethics in the West appears more ethico-political than epistemic and linguistic. (shrink)

The Panopticon project for a model prison obsessed the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham for almost 20 years. In the end, the project came to nothing; the Panopticon was never built. But it is precisely this that makes the Panopticon project the best exemplification of Bentham’s own theory of fictions, according to which non-existent fictitious entities can have all too real effects. There is probably no building that has stirred more philosophical controversy than Bentham’s Panopticon. The Panopticon is not merely, as (...) Foucault thought, “a cruel, ingenious cage”, in which subjects collaborate in their own subjection, but much more—constructing the Panopticon produces not only a prison, but also a god within it. The Panopticon is a machine which on assembly is already inhabited by a ghost. It is through the Panopticon and the closely related theory of fictions that Bentham has made his greatest impact on modern thought; above all, on the theory of power. The Panopticon writings are frequently cited, rarely read. This edition contains the complete “Panopticon Letters”, together with selections from “Panopticon Postscript I” and “Fragment on Ontology”, Bentham’s fullest account of fictions. This article discusses the possibility for vulnerable writing within feminist methodological approaches to research. Drawing upon a project that involved difficulties and tensions in conducting transnational research, including the documenting and telling of a partial narrative of an individual who set herself on fire, the article discusses what it might mean to focus more explicitly on explicating and recognising vulnerability in writing. In providing examples from working with a situated, localised analysis that engages feminist, postcolonial and queer theoretical (...) approaches to attend to the particular and everyday, I address some of the hesitations and uncertainties in undertaking research and producing knowledge, and concerns with forms of reflexive practice. At the heart of the discussion is the question of a vulnerable ethics, of how it is possible for feminist methods to represent the lives of others, especially when stories fail in the telling, both in providing adequate explanations and in the ways that trauma and suffering can remain incommunicable. Included in this are concerns as to how we as researchers are affected within the production of research. As a form of receptivity and wounding, the article argues for vulnerable writing that challenges feminist methods to remain open and receptive to what will always resist sense-making, while continuing to respond to the demand that we do justice to the lives of others. The second volume begins with two works published in 1943: _Ego Sapientia: The Wisdom That Is Mary_, De Koninck's first study in Mariology, and _The Primacy of the Common Good Against the Personalists_ (with _The Principle (...) of the New Order_), which generated a strong critical reaction. Included in this volume are two reviews of _The Primacy of the Common Good_, by Yves R. Simon and I. Thomas Eschmann, O.P., and De Koninck's substantial response to Eschmann in his lengthy “In Defense of St. Thomas.” The volume concludes with a group of short essays: “The Dialectic of Limits as Critique of Reason,” “Notes on Marxism,” “This Is a Hard Saying,” “[Review of] _Between Heaven and Earth_,” and “Concept, Process, and Reality.” “Volume Two of __The Writings of Charles De Koninck_ _reveals a Thomist at home not merely in the deepest questions of natural science and natural philosophy, but also in the highest reaches of ethical and political philosophy, and in the most wonderful realm of revealed theology. Faced with an increasingly media-saturated, globalized culture, art historians have begun to ask themselves challenging and provocative questions about the nature of their discipline. Why did the history of art come into being? Is it now in danger of slipping into obsolescence? And, if so, should we care? In _Writing Art History_, Margaret Iversen and Stephen Melville address these questions by exploring some assumptions at the discipline’s foundation. Their project is to excavate the lost continuities between philosophical aesthetics, contemporary theory, (...) and art history through close readings of figures as various as Michael Baxandall, Martin Heidegger, Jacques Lacan, and Alois Riegl. Ultimately, the authors propose that we might reframe the questions concerning art history by asking what kind of writing might help the discipline to better imagine its actual practices—and its potential futures. Resumen: Este ensayo propone un análisis comparado de Variable Piece #4: Secrets (1970) del artista conceptual norteamericano Douglas Huebler (1924-1997) y Secreto (2016-2020) de la artista chilena María P. Vila. Se trata de obras interactivas que, mediante una instalación, involucran la participación del público a partir de la escritura de secretos. En ambos proyectos los secretos se hicieron públicos en dos instancias: mediante su intercambio entre los participantes y, luego, por medio de su publicación en la forma de un libro (...) de artista. Si bien las obras de Huebler y Vila se pueden agrupar bajo la tendencia “art as action”, debido a su publicación se producen dos procesos de rematerialización que -a propósito de una serie de decisiones formales y materiales- dan cuenta de profundas diferencias en la concepción de lo que es y puede ser un libro de artista. Abstract: This paper proposes a comparative study of Variable Piece #4: Secrets (1970) by the american conceptual artist Douglas Huebler (1924-1997) and Secreto (2016-2020) by the chilean artist María P. Vila. These are interactive works that, through an installation, involve the participation of the public through the writing of secrets. In both projects the secrets were made public in two instances: through their exchange among the participants and, later, through their publication in the form of an artist's book. Although the works by Huebler and Vila can be grouped under the “art as action” trend, due to their publication, two processes of rematerialization take place. The formal and material decisions made by the artists and editors account for profound differences in the conception of what an artist's book is and can be. (shrink)

It explores how social media, texting, and other digitally mediated communications have transformed traditional modes of human interaction, emphasizing the shift from spoken to written vernaculars. The study highlights that digital communication, characterized by a visual and multimodal nature, diverges significantly from the conventional and linear nature of traditional spoken and written languages. From a cognitive perspective, and using the framework of conceptual blending theory (CBT) (...) and its embodied applications inspired by Jamin Pelkey’s work, the paper explores how technological advancements are reshaping the “language organ,” emphasizing the evolutionary importance of upright posture and free hands over articulatory organs in symbolic usage. The Digital Writing project at the International Semiotics Institute serves as a focal point for this research, analyzing the cognitive implications of various writing systems from pictographs to phonological alphabets and digital communication. This suggests a continuity in human communication systems, advocating for a spiral-evolution model influenced by the theories of Terrence Deacon and Vinicius Romanini. (shrink)

This paper presents a parametric analysis of a scene generated by Google Gemini in response to a creative writing prompt. Using the Objective Projection methodology (Bulut, 2026) and its six physical narrative variables Spatial Matrix (M), Temporal Flow (T), Environmental Vectors (V), Delta (Δ), Vacuum Variable (Ω), and Narrative Gravity (Ng) the scene is evaluated against both Eliot's Objective Correlative framework and the Bulut Doctrine's Objective Projection framework. Results indicate that approximately 40% of the scene's structural mechanisms particularly the (...) Vacuum Variable deployment, Spatial Matrix manipulation, and Adjective Embargo compliance fall within Objective Projection territory rather than Eliot's Objective Correlative framework. The paper argues that large language models may statistically learn Objective Projection parameters from high-quality narrative corpora without explicit theoretical knowledge of the framework, and discusses the implications for both narrative theory and AI-generated creative writing. The primary method of evaluation in philosophy courses (both undergraduate and graduate) is usually some form of research paper or essay. There is an assumption, however, that the only kind of essay that philosophy students need to learn how to write is the argumentative essay. Indeed, philosophy instructors often consider other forms of writing less significant. This workshop intends to break down these introducing participants to a variety of essay styles, and to other forms of practical part of undergraduate (...) philosophy coursework. A beautiful and thoughtful collection of essays on reading, writing and learning, _Writing and Psychoanalysis_ grows out of a colloquium. The results are wondrous and impact on the reader at many different levels. In the act of writing, we all discover something about what we know previously unknown to us, and we learn more about our inner world that we knew before we set pen to paper (or hand to computer). Patrick Mahony goes so far as to argue (...) that Freud's self-analysis was essentially a "writing cure." _Writing in Psychoanalysis_ is the first volume in the projected Monograph Series, Psychoanalytic Issues, the _Rivista di Psicoanalisi_ (the _Journal of the Italian Psychoanalytical Society_) is undertaking in conjunction with Karnac Books. This series constitutes a major effort to bring about a dialogue among psychoanalysts who while ultimately bound together by a common psychoanalytic heritage nonetheless are separated in their thinking by different idioms, whether linguistic or theoretical.
