The precarious rights of senior citizens, especially those who are highly educated and who are expected to counsel and guide the younger generations, has stimulated the creation internationally of advocacy associations and opinion leader groups. The strength of these groups, however, varies from country to country. In some countries, they are supported and are the focus of intense interest; in others, they are practically ignored. For this is reason we believe that the creation of a network of all these associations (...) is essential. The proposed network would act as a support for the already-existing policies of the United Nations’ High Commission for Human Rights, of independent experts, and of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People. All three have long ago recommended the creation of a recognized instrument for uniting presently scattered efforts. The proposed network, therefore, will seek to promote the international exchange of relevant expertise, and it will reinforce the commitments and actions that single countries are currently taking to meet these objectives. For example, informative public events can be organised to promote particular support initiatives and to provide an opportunity for new members of the network to be presented. The network will promote health for senior citizens, disease prevention, senior mobility, safe free time for seniors, alimentary education, protection against new risks and dangers, as well as equity in the services necessary for seniors to adopt new information and communication technologies. In the case of retired academic members, the network will promote equality with respect to continuing use of digital technologies (particularly email), continuing access to research libraries, and the guaranteed ability for seniors to fund their own research programs and to deliver free seminars. This paper examines a legal case arising from a workplace grievance that progressed to being heard at the UK’s Supreme Court. The case of Doogan and Wood versus Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board concerned two senior midwives in Scotland, both practicing Roman Catholics, who exercised their perceived rights in accordance with section 4 of the Abortion Act not to participate in the treatment of women undergoing abortions. The key question raised by this case was: “Is Greater Glasgow and (...) Clyde Health Board entitled to require the midwives to delegate, supervise and support staff in the treatment of patients undergoing termination of pregnancy?” The ethical issues concerning conscientious objection to abortion have been much debated although the academic literature is mainly concerned with the position of medical practitioners rather than what the World Health Organization terms “mid-level professionals” such as midwives. This paper examines the arguments put forward by the midwives to justify their refusal to carry out tasks they felt contravened their legal right to make a conscientious objection. We then consider professional codes, UK legislation and church legislation. While the former are given strong weighting the latter was been ignored in this case, although cases in other European countries have been prevented from escalating to such a high level by the intervention of prominent church figures. The paper concludes by stating that the question put to the courts remains as yet unanswered but offers some recommendations for future policy making and research. (shrink)

Research in corporate social performance (CSP) continues to seek bridges between the theoretical models that attempt to explain and those that attempt to show empirically what variables account for differences in performance. One construct that can provide such a bridge is Miles’ grounded theory (1987) of CSP. This paper describes Miles’ theory and its relationship to many of the empirical studies of CSP and recasts it into the theoretical frameworks of Wood (1991) and Wartick and Cochran (1985).

Nepali migrant women in Australia are entangled in multiple networks of care. They serve as primary caregivers for their families, while being disproportionately employed in the formal care and service sectors (ABS, People in Australia who were born in Nepal: 2021 census country of birth quickstats.https://www.abs.gov.au/census/find-census-data/quickstats/2021/7105_AUS, 2021). Within the patriarchal hierarchies of kinship, women are expected to provide the majority of care, often without reaping its benefits. Simultaneously, within the hierarchies of racial capitalism, migrant women of colour work in relatively (...) undervalued and underpaid roles, particularly in aged care, childcare, hospitality and cleaning. Most migrant women are responsible for managing households, meeting family expectations and undertaking multiple low-paying jobs on top of their gender-prescribed roles. Their contributions to economic development and their financial contributions to their families often go unrecognised. Within the diaspora, however, migrant feminist collectives are a rising force. These collectives are not only challenging the established hierarchy but are also reshaping it by nurturing horizontal, lateral networks of care.Through an (auto)ethnography of A Band of Women, a Nepali migrant women’s group in Melbourne, we show how communities of care are key to ensuring the safety of victim-survivors. Communities of care can transform victims into survivors, and survivors can transform communities of care. Survivors inject their communities with the politics of the feminist commons, disavowing hierarchy and insisting that we common responsibility for social and structural care (Woodly, The politics of care. A Band of Women has ignited feminist solidarity through joyful and embodied activism via sports, dancing, hiking, celebrating festivals, cultural outings and online discussion forums. What sets them apart is their leadership—survivors of family violence who boldly prioritise the safety and care needs of women of colour. By suspending and inverting the hegemonic direction of structural care—which usually flows from women to structurally privileged others—we argue that such communities of care are creating a new feminist commons (Ticktin, Building a feminist commons in the time of COVID-19. Rejecting sovereign individualism and embracing ontological interdependency (de la Bellacasa, Matters of care: Speculative ethics in more than human worlds. In this chapter, I build upon my past scholarship around what I call the governance of care, or the policies, politics, and policy formation processes that organize and distribute the resources, relationships, and labor necessary to maintain life (Nasol, 2023). I expand upon, particularly, what it means to build a “governance of care from below,” or in other words, the new worlds that immigrant women, particularly migrant reproductive workers, are forging through their practices of care during and beyond the COVID-19 (...) pandemic. I look at how migrant women are (and have been) building the foundation for a governance that centers life, is liberated from racial and patriarchal capitalism, and organizes care and social reproduction in a way where peoples’ needs are met. I am in conversation with the many scholars and activists that are sketching what “care as new world making” means, not only in theory but in practice (Woodly et al., The politics of care. Contemporary Political Theory, 20 (4), 890–925, 2021). I engage with Francisco-Menchavez’s concept of “communities of care” and Kneese and Hobart’s “radical care” as ways to understand how migrant care workers are contributing to this new world (Francisco-Menchavez, The labor of care: Filipina migrants and transnational families in the digital age. University of Illinois Press, 2018; Kneese & Hobart, Radical care: Survival strategies for uncertain times. Social Text, 38 (1), 1–16, 2020). Throughout the article, I share how migrant women have been able to practice care—from forging deep relationships, redistributing care and life-saving resources, to political organizing. Further, I discuss how workers offer models of building connection and solidarity during times of crises and violence created by the state itself, and how we can continue to build spaces and institutions that protect and defend our communities. On the one hand there is a remarkable "rediscovery" of nature, evidenced in such diverse but related phenomena as the vogue for English gardens and the appreciation of wild and "untamed places," such as the Alps and the Herz mountains. It is also the age of "sentiment," embracing a heightened sensitivity to all aspects of the physical world. And yet when we turn to the visual arts, we find landscape painting ranked far below history painting and portraiture. Precedence is given to the representation of human actions and emotions, and the depiction of the human figure remains the highest goal of ambitious art.The modern hierarchy of the genres was first established on a firm theoretical and practical basis with the founding of the French Royal Academy in the seventeenth century. The painter of living animals is ranked higher than the [End Page 115] painter of inanimate nature who depicts "choses mortes et sans mouvement." 3 The painter of human subjects, who imitates "the most perfect work of God," stands higher still. The highest achievement to which the artist can aspire, however, is history painting, the depiction of groups of figures in themes derived from biblical and mythical sources. To achieve this, the artist cannot depict what he sees but must employ both knowledge and imagination. The fundamental opposition here is between painting as a merely imitative or mechanical art, which is addressed to the eye alone, and painting as a work of "invention" or "imagination," which is addressed to the mind. Only the latter constitutes a properly liberal art, entitling the painter to stand alongside the poet as "un auteur ingénieux et savant" over and above the mere artisan or skilled laborer.The great popularity enjoyed by landscape painting in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was not met by any comparable elevation in its status as a fine art. Addressing students of the Royal Academy in London in 1770, Joshua Reynolds could continue to dismiss landscape and still-life as the "meaner walks of painting" which require only "mechanical" expertise. 4 For Reynolds the status of painting as a fine art is established through its treatment of the great subjects of history painting, that is, the depiction of human passions and the intellect. Only in tackling such themes does the artist succeed in addressing the imagination, which Reynolds describes as the "great end of art." 5 Although of comparatively recent origin, the genre of "landscape poetry" remained equally problematic and could not easily be reconciled with classicist ideals. New categories seemed to be required to comprehend the work of poets such as Albrecht von Haller and James Thomson, in which the varied and ever-changing aspects of the natural landscape were made the central protagonists of the poetic drama. This paper challenges the widely held assumption that paintings and other works of graphic art have a communicable rhythmic structure. I defend the view that although the experience of viewing a picture takes place in time, and thus is successive, it cannot be temporally structured in a sufficiently determinate manner to sustain the kind of attentional focus required for the communication of even simple rhythmic patterns. With reference to examples of both abstract and figurative painting, I argue that the graphic (...) arts—unlike music and poetry—are non-sequential and that this has important consequences for how a work of graphic art is perceived. Drawing on recent attempts to critically reconstruct the ideas of Heinrich Wölfflin, this paper argues that there is a specific ‘logic of depiction’ that is distinctive to visual as opposed to verbal forms of representation. The aim is to provide a set of objective parameters that can allow a comparative analysis of the formal organization of pictures despite differences in period, subject matter, format, etc. The paper seeks to show that such an analysis is possible and that it possesses explanatory (...) force. Its frame is a critical engagement with Richard Wollheim's theory of style. Wollheim holds that general style terms are merely tools of classification and that they are relative to the changing point of view of those who seek to understand the art of the past. However, the critical reconstruction of Wölfflin's fundamental concepts aims to identify necessary conditions for visual representation as such. The fundamental concepts function not as taxonomic categories but as ‘limit concepts’ that demarcate a scale of possibilities and thus enable meaningful comparison of artworks. (shrink)

This paper has two aims. First, I seek to show that Kendall Walton's analysis of the participatory character of our imaginative engagement in games of make-believe provides a powerful explanatory framework that can be used to address some of the central problems that still remain unresolved in contemporary accounts of living-presence response, including those put forward by David Freedberg and Alfred Gell. Second, I argue that Walton's focus on the activities of ‘appreciators’ prevents him from considering the possible application of (...) his theory to other kinds of activity, even where this would permit a genuine enrichment or extension of his position. Once we open up the field of enquiry to include the various ceremonial, civic, religious, and other functions that works of art fulfil, the analogy to the participatory character of games of make-believe becomes stronger rather than weaker. Reflection on this issue brings into focus the distinctive character of Bildwissenschaft (...) and the features that distinguish it not only from other related disciplines such as art history and visual studies, but also from recent work in the philosophy of the image. This paper addresses two key works in the eighteenth‐century debate on the problem of taste: the Abbé Du Bos's Réflexions critiques sur la poésie et sur la peinture and David Hume's ‘Of the Standard of Taste’ . A successful solution to the ‘paradox of taste’ should sustain the democratising impulse behind Du Bos's appeal to the judgment of the ‘public’ whilst, at the same time, acknowledging the role of learning and discovery which underpins Hume's recourse to the opinion of the (...) best qualified critics. This can be achieved, it is argued, by taking up a standpoint which is internal to our actual arguments or disputes about art, drawing upon and recommending a set of practices which allow for the development and revision of our judgments about works of art. Kant's moral philosophy is grounded on the dignity of humanity as its sole fundamental value, and involves the claim that human beings are to be regarded as the ultimate end of nature. It might be thought that a theory of this kind would be incapable of grounding any conception of our relation to other living things or to the natural world which would value nonhuman creatures or respect humanity's natural environment. Ellen Meiksins Wood is a leading contemporary political theorist who has elaborated an innovative approach to the history of political thought, the social history of political theory .

Wood, Kressel, Joshi, and Louie’s (2014) meta-analysis of menstrual cycle influences on mate preferences identified three artifacts that influenced study findings: imprecise estimates of the fertile phase, decline over time, and publication effects. These artifacts also were evident in another recent meta-analysis by Gildersleeve, Haselton, and Fales (2014a). This consistent evidence of artifacts is not challenged by Gildersleeve et al.’s (2014b) failure to find another artifact–chasing significance levels. In addition, Wood et al. correctly coded the findings of Gangestad (...) and colleagues’ research, given the variation in their reporting formats and inclusion criteria, which in some studies included only 54% of the sample. The controversy over menstrual cycle effects could be beneficial in increasing interest in publishing null results as well as in identifying evolutionary models that build on women’s capacity to regulate reproduction according to societal roles. How can we live life wisely? Tiberius argues that we need to develop the kind of wisdom that emphasizes the importance of learning from experience. We need to care about things that sustain us and give us good experiences, have perspective on our successes and failures, and be moderately self-aware and cautiously optimistic about human nature.

Whether it is to be maximized or promoted as the object of a duty of beneficence, well-being is a vitally important notion in ethical theory. Well-being is a value, but to play the role it has often been assigned by ethical theory it must also be something we can measure and compare. It is a normative concept, then, but it also seems to have empirical content. Historically, philosophical conceptions of well-being have been responsive to the paired demands for normative and (...) empirical adequacy. However, recent work has yet to pay serious attention to the burgeoning field of well-being research in empirical psychology. This might be because the research is new and unknown, or it might be due to uncertainty about how a philosophical investigation would take such research into account. This chapter offers solutions to both of these problems. It provides an overview of well-being research in empirical psychology. It then uses this overview as part of an argument for an empirical informed account of well-being that we call the Value-Based Life Satisfaction Account. (shrink)
