Buddhism and Jainism share the concepts of karma, rebirth, and the desirability of escaping from rebirth. The literature of both traditions contains many stories about past, and sometimes future, lives which reveal much about these foundational doctrines. Naomi Appleton carefully explores how multi-life stories served to construct, communicate, and challenge ideas about karma and rebirth within early South Asia, examining portrayals of the different realms of rebirth, the potential paths and goals of human beings, and the biographies of ideal (...) religious figures. Appleton also deftly surveys the ability of karma to bind individuals together over multiple lives, and the nature of the supernormal memory that makes multi-life stories available in the first place. This original study not only sheds light on the individual preoccupations of Buddhist and Jain tradition, but contributes to a more complete history of religious thought in South Asia, and brings to the foreground long-neglected narrative sources. A great deal has been written in the past twenty-five years on the ways in which we perceive our environment and show our preferences for particular kinds of landscape. But most of this literature is based on consolidated data abstracted from questionnaires and we have almost no detailed case studies showing how habits of environmental perception and landscape taste have developed in single individuals. In this book Professor Jay Appleton, who has been closely involved with landscape aesthetics for twenty (...) years, attempts an autobiographical study of the evolution of his own habits of perception, and his own emotional responses to particular kinds of landscape. The book traces some of the ways in which attitudes and habits of thought, once established, have influenced, encouraged and constrained the theoretical ideas on landscape which Jay Appleton has developed in his earlier published work. A Lacanian Conception of Populism takes issue with traditional theories of populism, which seek to equate populism with hegemony, arguing that these are not only different but even incompatible logics. Timothy Appleton contends that one of the main differences between populism and hegemony has to do with the social totality: whilst hegemony absolutises it, populism eviscerates it, setting in its place an - apparently paradoxical - dispersion of singular instances of 'the people'. The book considers the work of Laclau, (...) Badiou, Žižek and Rancière, before arriving at a novel conceptualisation that Appleton dubs 'the populism of singularities'. In the second half of the book, the author draws out the consequences of this concept for contemporary political theory: the question of how to define 'left' and 'right'; the question of popular enthusiasm and affect; 'truth' versus 'post-truth'; the question of leadership; populism and nationalism; and the relation between populism and political parties. A Lacanian Conception of Populism will be key reading for academics and scholars of political theory, political philosophy, post-Marxist thought, Discourse theory and psychoanalysis. This paper presents three literary strategies used in the portrayal of the Buddha in the Avadanasataka and asks what they tell us about the text, the Buddha, and the ways in which we as scholars should approach Buddhist literature. Through formulaic passages, audience responses, and glimpses of humanity counterbalancing the glories of the superhuman Buddha, this particular text offers a literary Buddha that is transformative for those he encounters both inside and outside the text. As such, this literary Buddha raises (...) questions about the interface between literary creativity and Buddhist textual practice. (shrink)

This paper addresses the apparent difficulty experienced by philosophers in applying the methodology of art criticism to the aesthetics of nature and uses the idea of 'narrative' to explore it. A short poem is chosen which recounts the 'narrative' of a simple natural process – the passage of day into night – and this is followed by a simplified critique illustrating how the poem invites questions relating to style, technique, subject, etc., leading to the query whether the art form (poem) (...) can be dispensed with and the subject (nature) be left to tell its own story, using the 'language' of symbolism. The interface between art and science is reviewed particularly in the light of the ideas of John Dewey and what has happened since. The 'symbolism of environmental opportunity' is proposed as the key to crossing the arts/science boundary, and the question is raised whether the distinctiveness of nature is of paramount importance in this context. Various grounds for scepticism are examined, e.g. the danger of drawing inferences about human interaction with nature from the behaviour of other species. (shrink)

Like Buddhist traditions, Jain traditions preserve many stories about people’s past lives. Unlike Buddhist traditions, relatively few of these stories narrate the past lives of the tradition’s central figure, the jina. In Jainism there is no equivalent path to the bodhisatta path; the karma that guarantees jinahood is bound a mere two births before that attainment, and the person who attracts that karma cannot do so willfully, nor is he aware of it being bound. There is therefore no Jain equivalent (...) to the ubiquitous j?taka literature. In this paper I will explore what the absence of a j?taka genre in Jain traditions tells us about the genre’s role in Buddhism. Focusing upon the multi-life stories of Gautama Buddha and Vardham?na Mah?v?ra, I will ask how these two strikingly similar narratives betray some fundamental differences between Buddhist and Jain understandings of the ultimate religious goal and the method of its attainment. The Asvaraja story relates the adventures of a caravan of merchants shipwrecked on an island of demonesses and rescued by a flying horse, the asvaraja, ‘king of horses’. The Simhala story continues this narrative to include the chief merchant, Simhala, being followed home by a demoness, who tries to get him back before seducing and eating the king. Simhala is crowned king and invades the island. Each story has many versions, both Mahayana and non-Mahayana. This paper examines five key versions: (...) birth story with ‘ocean of samsara’ metaphor; political and quasi-historical narrative of the invasion of Sri Lanka by the Sinhalese; warning that ‘all women are demonesses’; glorifi cation of the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara; and Newar warning of the dangers of travelling to Tibet. This article explores the role of paccekabuddhas in stories of the Buddha’s past lives in early Buddhist narrative collections in P?li and Sanskrit. In early Buddhism paccekabuddhas are liminal figures in two senses: they appear between Buddhist dispensations, and they are included as a category of awakening between samm?sambuddha and arahat. Because of their appearance in times of no Buddhism, paccekabuddhas feature regularly in j?taka literature, as exemplary renouncers, teachers, or recipients of gifts. Background Older adults, especially those with dementia, are often excluded from health research due to physical and medical comorbidities, and the assumption that those with cognitive impairment won’t be able to consent. Using routinely collected data for research purposes is a way to include older people in research, and therefore the benefits of research. However, very little research has been done to examine the attitudes of older people towards sharing their routinely collected health data for research purposes. Method Twenty-eight semi-structured (...) interviews were conducted with older health service users in the Counties Manukau health district of Auckland, New Zealand. The interviews explored participants’ views around the use of de-identified health data for health service improvement and health services research. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results Themes identified were: 1) Benefits: participants believed that there were benefits to sharing their health data such as helping others, improving health services, advancing scientific knowledge, and giving back to the health system; sharing health data was also seen as a reflection of good character, and people felt that their pre-existing views about whether they wished to share health data should be respected even if they were no longer able to consent. 2) Concerns: participants had concerns about sharing data with private companies, the use of inaccurate data, and the potential personal and societal consequences of sharing health data. 3) Expectations: participants encouraged collaboration between institutions in New Zealand, but expected data privacy to be maintained, processes to be transparent and cultural values around data to be respected; there was an expectation those sharing health data (patients or institutions) should benefit from any private sector gains. Conclusion Older people in our study were supportive of sharing their deidentified health data for research purposes provided that the research would benefit others, now and in the future. This provides more confidence in the use routinely collected health data of older people for research, provided that researchers handle data in a respectful way and use it to benefit communities while avoiding potential harms. The standard mathematical account of the sub-metrical geometry of a space employs topology, whose foundational concept is the open set. This proves to be an unhappy choice for discrete spaces, and offers no insight into the physical origin of geometrical structure. I outline an alternative, the Theory of Linear Structures, whose foundational concept is the line. Application to Relativistic space-time reveals that the whole geometry of space-time derives from temporal structure. In this sense, instead of spatializing time, Relativity temporalizes space.
