How should defenders of liberalism think about access to reproductive technologies? Mitochondrial replacement technique (MRT) enables women with pathogenic variations of mitochondrial disease to have children without the fear of transmission. This technology can also allow lesbians, or partners with female-assigned physiology (PFP), to have genetically related offspring. Cavaliere and Palacios-Gonzalez argue that lesbians should be able to access MRT on autonomy grounds. They argue MRT should not be restricted to those with mitochondrial disease because it is non-therapeutic and (...) invokes the Millian harm principle. Yet, Baylis argues that a desire for genetically related offspring is not sufficient to access MRT because it contributes to harmful social narratives about adopted families. I strengthen Cavaliere and Palacios-Gonzalez’s liberal defence by bringing another liberal commitment—equality. Ultimately, I argue that the liberal state must allow PFPs to use MRT. I first show that the use of MRT by PFPs is permissible even if MRT is therapeutic by comparing MRT with cosmetic surgery—that is, social uses of therapeutic interventions are permitted if we are interested in doing so. Borrowing from Dillard, a possible interest is self-replication. Next, I outline and respond to a possible criticism by Baylis—MRT is necessary but not sufficient for self-replication. Ultimately, I show that the liberal state must permit MRT because (a) it provides PFPs with an equal opportunity to experience having genetically related offspring with their partner and (b) contributing to harmful social narratives is insufficient for limiting autonomy. A novel "dream splicing" technique allows the objective evaluation of thematic coherence in dreams. In this study, dream reports were cut into segments and segments randomly recombined to form spliced reports. Judges then attempted to distinguish spliced reports from intact ones. Five judges correctly scored 22 spliced and intact reports 82% of the time ; 13 of the 22 reports were correctly scored by all five judges . We conclude that most dream reports contain sufficient coherence to allow judges (...) to distinguish intact from spliced reports. In contrast, abridged reports, which had all but their first and last five lines removed, were correctly identified in only 10 of 38 reports, suggesting that thematic continuity does not normally extend from the beginning to the end of dreams. The continuity identified in this minority of the reports depended on easily identifiable features, such as specific characters, objects, locations, and emotions, rather than on "latent" themes. Lecturing is the only educational form inherited from the universities of the middle ages that is still in use today. However, it seems that lecturing is under threat, as recent calls to do away with lecturing in favour of more dynamic settings, such as the flipped classroom or pre-recorded talks, have found many adherents. In line with the post-critical approach of this book, this chapter argues that there is something in the university lecture that needs to be affirmed: at its (...) best, the university lecture functions as a technique for thinking together or for making collective thinking happen in a lecture hall. The lecture offers the set-up, both technological and architectural, to forge a common experience that binds together the listeners and the speakers; that experience can be characterised as visualising ideas or seeing things as if they had taken on a ‘bodily form’. By looking at several examples of lecturing moments experienced by Gadamer as a student and later recounted in his autobiography, we can better understand the paradigmatic experience that characterises the lecture – as an ideal to be sought, even if, perhaps, not always actualised in everyday lectures. In this essay, I muse upon aporia’s value as a pedagogical technique in the philosophy classroom using as a guide examples of aporia that are found in Plato’s Socratic dialogues. The word aporia, translated as “without passage” or “without a way,” is used metaphorically to describe the unsettling state of confusion many find themselves in after engaging in philosophical discourse. Following a brief introduction in which I situate aporia as a pedagogy amicable to experiential learning, I examine various ways (...) in which aporia appears in certain Platonic dialogues, which enables us to draw out some paradigmatic features of aporia. I then discuss how I apply aporia as a pedagogical technique in the contemporary philosophy classroom, taking up three specific concerns in detail: aporetic discomfort, right use, and potential misuse. This article argues that machine perception should be understood not merely as a technical development in artificial intelligence, but as a cultural technique that reorganizes the societal conditions of visibility. In AI-mediated exhibitionary environments, vision no longer functions primarily as representation for human spectators; it becomes an infrastructural operation oriented toward alignment, persistence, and inference. Drawing on examples from augmented museum systems and immersive installations, the article introduces the concept of infrastructural visibility to describe how algorithmic thresholds delimit what (...) can appear, persist, and be recognized within shared environments. Rather than focusing solely on surveillance or control, the argument reframes machine seeing as a transformation in the governance of perception itself. As computational systems increasingly mediate recognition and participation, they redistribute perceptual labor, reshape epistemic authority, and reorganize the normative foundations of shared visibility. The societal challenge is therefore not only how AI systems classify the world, but how perceptual infrastructures become authoritative and how they might be rendered accountable. (shrink)

Diffusion of responsibility is a well-known effect widely studied in a real-life setting. It can occur in a situation in which the more people observe a crisis event, the less likely it is that someone will react and provide real assistance. These days of a galloping digital revolution a question is to be raised as to whether the same effect can be observed in the online space of communication. In order to investigate this phenomenon we designed a study aimed at (...) testing whether people exposed to a situation of cyberbullying will decide to take action against it depending on how many other Internet users are also aware of that crisis. Results obtained by us confirmed the existence of the diffusion of responsibility in the Internet similar to that observed in our daily lives. We also confirmed that a well-known influence technique “Even a penny will help” (in our study “every reaction will help”) can be effectively used to model behaviour online. In our times of digital revolution, those outcomes can be a step both toward understanding human behaviour in the online setting, showing us that it is not that different from the one presented in real live face-to-face communication and toward helping deal with antisocial behaviour people face online on a daily basis. Once Marxist-Leninism was rejected as the framework of progressive politicized filmmaking and international solidarity relationships, Godard moved on to experiment with Anne-Marie Miéville about the means to bring about socio-political change within the framework “journalism of the audiovisual” that implied an “epistemology of seeing.” In this chapter, I analyze Godard’s concept of the “trademark image” in relationship to his embryonic experiments with montage and historical images in Ici et ailleurs. During the winter years, the working class began to slowly disappear (...) from the political arena in Europe. Bearing this in mind, I compare Numéro deux and Passion where Godard portrays—among other things—the ordeals of the working class and of women while exploring the former’s incipient disappearance. In those years, Godard is careful not to resort to either counter-culture or cynicism; instead of adapting previous positions to the day, he tries to resituate them in the context of the failure and falling myths and political models of the twentieth century, in a constant search for the figure that will lead history on and the discourses around it. Recent accounts of the development of the philosophy of technology identify a distinct empirical turn in the 1980s and 1990s characterized by a focus on specific technologies and an understanding of technology as a contingent product of a heterogeneous array of factors. In this contribution, I explore the overlaps of this so-called empirical turn with other research fields such as science studies, practice studies or even consumer research via a case study on sports technology, that of the running shoe.

Resumen:En este artículo analizamos las relaciones entre ciencia, técnica y vida en el pensamiento del filósofo francés Michel Henry (1922-2002). Presentamos, primero, el rol que asigna Henry a la ciencia moderna que con su geometrización del mundo ha dejado de lado la vida y la subjetividad y con ello ha dado lugar a la técnica moderna o tecnología. En segundo lugar, siguiendo a Henry, caracterizamos esta técnica moderna como ciencia aplicada, basada en máquinas automáticas que se autonomizan del ser humano; (...) y que constituye la concreción práctica del conocimiento objetivo de la ciencia moderna. Por último, analizamos lo que Henry llama la Técnica original, definida como Cuerpo-apropiación y Praxis de la Subjetividad original y su expresión en los instrumentos y el trabajo humano. Estos análisis permiten vislumbrar una “filosofía de la técnica” en Henry, que consideramos podría inscribirse en la tradición de la “filosofía clásica de la técnica” (en la línea de autores como Heidegger y Ellul).Palabras clave: Michel Henry; ciencia; técnica; tecnología; vida; subjetividad. Cryosurgery is an effective and innocuous process that is painless, safe and economical, applied to multiple specialities in which it provides alternatives to its traditional methods. A search was carried out for articles and bibliographic reviews referring to Cryosurgery and from whose information this technical note was obtained. Research (...) on the application of Cryosurgery presents solid evidence of its benefits. Therefore, it has been used in several countries and health campaigns, showing excellent results, so it is advisable to implement it in health systems. (shrink)

The concept of the future is re-emerging as an urgent topic on the academic agenda. In this article, we focus on the ‘politics of the future’: the social processes and practices that allow particular imagined futures to become socially performative. Acknowledging that the performativity of such imagined futures is well-understood, we argue that how particular visions come about and why they become performative is underexplained. Drawing on constructivist sociological theory, this article aims to fill (part of) this gap by exploring (...) the question ‘how do imagined futures become socially performative’? In doing so, the article has three aims to (1) identify the leading social–theoretical work on the future; (2) conceptualize the relationship of the imagination of the future with social practices and the performance of reality; (3) provide a theoretical framework explaining how images of the future become performative, using the concepts ‘techniques of futuring’ and ‘dramaturgical regime’. A new technique for proving realisability results is presented, and is illustrated in detail for the simple case of arithmetic minus induction. CL is a Gentzen formulation of classical logic. CPQ is CL minus the Cut Rule. The basic proof theory and model theory of CPQ and CL is developed. For the semantics presented CPQ is a paraconsistent logic, i.e. there are non-trivial CPQ models in which some sentences are both true and false. Two systems of arithmetic minus induction (...) are introduced, CL-A and CPQ-A based on CL and CPQ, respectively. The realisability theorem for CPQ-A is proved: It is shown constructively that to each theorem A of CPQ-A there is a formula A *, a so-called “realised disjunctive form of A ”, such that variables bound by essentially existential quantifiers in A * can be written as recursive functions of free variables and variables bound by essentially universal quantifiers. Realisability is then applied to prove the consistency of CL-A, making use of certain finite non-trivial inconsistent models of CPQ-A. (shrink)

In scientific work, sonification is primarily thought of as a novel way to communicate post hoc research findings to lay audiences but only rarely, if ever, as a component of the research itself. This article argues that, rather than any inherent epistemological limitations of sound as a medium of scientific reasoning, this framing reflects a sociohistorical tendency to “silence” experimental techniques as they become widely adopted—both in terms of the literal silencing of noisy instrumentation and the elision of the role (...) of sound in received discovery accounts. This tendency is well-illustrated by the history of electrophysiology research, particularly the case of the electrical penetration graph, an instrument used by entomologists to study how insects feed on plants. Combining participant observation, interviews, and analysis of EPG technical literature, this article recovers the unacknowledged role of sound in EPG’s exploratory stages and gradual emergence as a standard laboratory technique as well as its gradual silencing as a consequence of this standardizing process. As police departments have come to rely on algorithmic patrol management systems to assign patrols, community groups and academics have raised concerns about demographic bias in the data used to train these systems. This paper introduces a technique for eliminating demographically correlated features from a place-based algorithmic patrol management system. We apply our technique to the real-world algorithmic patrol management system ResourceRouter, developed by SoundThinking. After applying the technique, we test the system's accuracy against historical crime incident (...) data in four cities across several crime categories. Results suggest that demographically correlated features can be removed from the system without reducing accuracy. (shrink)
