Blasting in water-conveyance tunnels that cross rivers is vital for the safety and stability of embankments. In this work, a tunnel project that crosses the Yellow River in the north district of the first-phase Eastern Line of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project was selected as the research object. A complex modeling and numerical simulation on embankment stability with regard to the blasting power of the tunnel was conducted using the professional finite difference software FLAC3D to disclose the relationships between the (...) blasting seismic waves with vibration velocity and embankment displacement under different excavation steps. Calculation results demonstrated that displacement generally attenuated from the tunnel wall to the internal structure of rocks under the effect of blasting seismic waves. The tunnel wall was in tension, and tensile stress gradually transformed into compressive stress with increased depth into the rocks. The curtain-grouting zone was mainly concentrated in the compressive zones. For different excavation steps, the vibration velocity at different feature points was high at the beginning of blasting and then gradually decreased. The resultant displacement was relatively small in the early excavation period and slowly increased as blasting progressed. The effects of different excavation steps on the safety of surrounding rocks and embankment under blasting seismic waves were simulated. We found that the blasting-induced vibration velocity was within the safe range of the code and that the calculated displacement was within the allowed range. Numerical simulation was feasible to assess the safety and stability of engineering projects. (shrink)

How should we conceptualise a philosophical tradition retrospectively defined and continuously shaped by contemporary scholarship? This paper addresses this philosophy-of-historiography question by focusing on Xuanxue, a significant yet underdeveloped domain of Chinese philosophy centered on the corpus of the Wei-Jin (魏晉) Period (220–589 CE) and beyond. Scholarly conceptions of Xuanxue have long been bound by entrenched themes, the ‘Daoist’ label, and rigid periodisation. In contrast, this paper situates Xuanxue within both its historical milieu and the context of ongoing modern interpretations. (...) Drawing heuristically from Wang Bi’s (王弼, 226–249 CE) conceptual interdependence between Name (ming 名) and Actual Situation (shi 實), I propose a new method (HPE) for evaluating Xuanxue conceptions with three criteria: Historical embeddedness, Plurality, and Evolvingness. This research thus offers a philosophically reflexive model for Xuanxue studies and the broader field of cross-cultural philosophy, demonstrating how ancient traditions can be engaged as dynamic intellectual projects. We investigated the impact of employee turnover rates at different levels on the degree of digital transformation of non-financial A-share listed companies in China. Using the employment rates of different educational backgrounds and non-financial A-share listed companies in China from 2009 to 2016, we applied panel data and conducted regression analysis on the data to test their relationship. The baseline testing shows that companies can address the turnover of low skilled employees by adopting labor-saving technologies, which significantly improves the sustainability (...) of digital transformation. The robustness test further validated these findings, emphasizing that the departure of highly skilled employees will have a negative impact on the sustainability of digital transformation initiatives, highlighting the necessity for companies to retain talent. Our research findings emphasize the importance of using advanced technology to replace low skilled tasks, workforce, and prioritizing the retention of high skilled talent to ensure a sustainable and competitive digital transformation trajectory for companies. Most mass incidents are created by economic or social concerns brought on by fast socioeconomic change and poor local government. The number of mass occurrences in China has significantly increased in recent years, putting the country’s steady growth and public behavior decision-making in harm. We examine the factors that influence public behavior decision-making in the following significant factors, contributing to the development of effective prevention and response strategies. The structural equation approach is used to analyze the main determinants influencing public (...) behavioral decisions in the aftermath of mass incidents using surveys of a large population. The finding shows that media plays a mediating role in the relationship between mass occurrences and influencing factors impacting public emotion. The direct and indirect effects of public behavior decision-making and its role increasingly social changes as things happen, government credibility, media plays mediating role in public emotional factors. All directly impact public behavior decision-making, while emotional factors have an indirect impact via media intermediaries. The escalation of public behavior decisions is seen as a result of structural transmission and the increase of dynamic as well as other factors. (shrink)

Legal Judgment Prediction (LJP) is a typical application of Artificial Intelligence in the intelligent judiciary. Current research primarily focuses on automatically predicting law articles, charges, and terms of penalty based on the fact description of cases. However, existing methods for LJP have limitations, such as neglecting document structure and ignoring case similarities. We propose a novel framework called Graph Contrastive Learning with Augmentation (GCLA) for legal judgment prediction to address these issues. GCLA constructs trainable document-level graphs for fact description, capturing (...) local and global context through sentence-level subgraphs. Graph augmentation enhances robustness. We introduce a comparison case relation perspective, using graph contrastive learning to model case-text label relationships effectively. Experimental results on real-world datasets demonstrate the competitive performance of GCLA. (shrink)

Over the past decade, China has witnessed a sharp increase in clinical trials, exceeding 4,000 in 2023. Yet, this growth has brought emerging ethical challenges and concerning researcher misconduct. Despite growing scholarly attention to clinical trial regulation, a critical knowledge gap remains regarding the ethical world of clinical researchers. This study investigates ethical challenges in clinical research, their contributing factors, and pathways for improvement. The research design involved mixed methods, specifically a nationwide questionnaire survey (quantitative) and semi-structured interviews (qualitative). Using (...) stratified random sampling from China’s Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR), 1,800 questionnaires were distributed and 287 valid responses analyzed descriptively with SPSS 22 to identify key challenges. Subsequently, 37 clinical researchers were interviewed, and transcripts thematically analyzed with NVivo 11 to explore underlying causes and triangulate the survey findings, thereby identifying potential pathways for improvement. The descriptive analysis of the questionnaire results, triangulated with interview findings, reveals that general misconduct is common despite the rarity of severe violations; ethical behavior often lags behind ethical cognition and attitude; researchers show blunted moral sensitivity; and most adopt a passive stance toward ethical compliance rather than active engagement. The thematic analysis identifies two core contributors to these challenges: individual factors—including personal traits, dulled moral sensitivity, limited ethical knowledge, and low ethical awareness; and environmental factors—including weak ethical oversight, an inadequate ethical climate, unhealthy research competition, and researcher-subject knowledge asymmetry. Ethical challenges in China’s clinical research persist due to the interaction of personal ethical limitations and structurally weak oversight systems. To mitigate these challenges, a dual approach is proposed, integrating internal moral cultivation and external oversight. Internally, efforts should focus on creating an ethical space for dialogue, promoting moral consensus, fostering ethical identity and sensitivity, and cultivating a sense of ethical responsibility through moral practice. Externally, improvements are needed in post-approval ethical monitoring, targeted training programs, research climate, and public understanding of clinical trials and ethics. (shrink)

With the rapid development of the economy, the land use/cover change in the Greater Bay Area has undergone tremendous changes, which have had directly negative effects on ecosystem functions and services. The development of sustainable land use strategies to quantitatively evaluate ecosystem services is required. Based on multitemporal land use data, the equivalent coefficients table method was used to assess the ecosystem service values, and the impact of LUCC on ecosystem services was analyzed. A future land use simulation model and (...) multiscenario simulations were employed to predict land use change in 2030. Our results indicated that the loss of ESVs decreased by 14.29 billion yuan from 2005 to 2020. The spatial distribution of the high-value ecosystem services was concentrated around the peripheral area of the northern regions in the GBA, and those areas had less land use development and human activity. Compared with those in 2020, the total ESVs of the business-as-usual scenario, socioeconomic development scenario, and cultivated protection priority scenario in 2030 decreased, while they increased in the ecological protection priority scenario. In the CPP scenario, regulating, supporting, provisioning, and cultural services increased slightly, but they decreased in the other scenarios. The patterns of LUCC were the main reasons for the decrease in ESVs, such as the loss of land with high ecological value. Additionally, a four-quadrant analysis is introduced to determine which land use simulation will be expected to be adopted by the government. The findings of this study provide valuable information for decision-making and policy development in the coastal zones and for the sustainable management of ecosystems. (shrink)

Cellular reprogramming can manipulate the identity of cells to generate the desired cell types1– 3. The use of cell intrinsic components, including oocyte cytoplasm and transcription factors, can enforce somatic cell reprogramming to pluripotent stem cells4– 7. By contrast, chemical stimulation by exposure to small molecules offers an alternative approach that can manipulate cell fate in a simple and highly controllable manner8– 10. However, human somatic cells are refractory to chemical stimulation owing to their stable epigenome2,11,12 and reduced plasticity13,14; it (...) is therefore challenging to induce human pluripotent stem cells by chemical reprogramming. Here we demonstrate, by creating an intermediate plastic state, the chemical reprogramming of human somatic cells to human chemically induced pluripotent stem cells that exhibit key features of embryonic stem cells. The whole chemical reprogramming trajectory analysis delineated the induction of the intermediate plastic state at the early stage, during which chemical-induced dedifferentiation occurred, and this process was similar to the dedifferentiation process that occurs in axolotl limb regeneration. Moreover, we identified the JNK pathway as a major barrier to chemical reprogramming, the inhibition of which was indispensable for inducing cell plasticity and a regeneration-like program by suppressing pro-inflammatory pathways. Our chemical approach provides a platform for the generation and application of human pluripotent stem cells in biomedicine. This study lays foundations for developing regenerative therapeutic strategies that use well-defined chemicals to change cell fates in humans. (shrink)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current state of post-traumatic growth and identify its influencing factors in discharged COVID-19 patients. PTG refers to individual experiences of significant positive change arising from the struggle with a major life crisis. This descriptive cross-sectional study used the convenient sampling method to recruit 140 discharged COVID-19 patients in Hunan, China. The results show that the PTG of the discharged COVID-19 patients was positively correlated with self-esteem, post-traumatic stress disorder, coping style tendency, (...) and social support, but negatively correlated with the time from onset to diagnosis. Our findings could provide guidance on improving the psychological state and well-being of discharged COVID-19 patients. (shrink)

Pharmaceutical supply chains are often highly complex with conflicting objectives of social welfare and profit maximization. Furthermore, there are various stakeholders including pharmaceutical manufacturer, distributors, retailers, patients, and the government. In this paper, we consider a two-stage supply chain consisting of one pharmaceutical manufacturer and a pharmacy with online and offline channels. We focus on four price cap models: no price cap regulation, pharmaceutical manufacturer’s price cap regulation, pharmacy price cap regulation, and linkage price cap regulation. We apply game theory, (...) investigate how the price cap regulations affect the firms’ pricing, and evaluate the economic performance and social welfare of the dual-channel pharmaceutical supply chain. Our findings show that first, like the single-channel pharmaceutical supply chain, the profit of the regulated firm always decreases and the profit of the unregulated firm always increases when they are under one-sided price cap regulations. Second, the impacts of the linkage price cap regulation on the supply chain are more complicated depending on the linkage coefficient and market share. Overall, our findings can provide theoretical and practical insights to help the government devise price cap regulations for complex modern pharmaceutical supply chains. (shrink)

After experiencing the COVID-19 pandemic, the status and mechanisms of leadership, and the challenges for medical workers in terms of family–work conflicts, have caused widespread concern. In the post-pandemic era, based on role theory and the stressor-detachment model, this paper seeks to break the “black box” of negative effects that can be caused by leadership, research the mechanism and boundary conditions of those negative effects, and explore factors to reduce those negative effects. We recruited 1,010 Chinese medical workers fighting COVID-19 (...) on the frontline. Our study results showed that there was a significant negative correlation between empowering leadership and work–family conflict, and this relationship was completely mediated by role stress, while psychological detachment moderated the relationship between role stress and work–family conflict. Moreover, psychological detachment moderated the mediating effect of empowering leadership on work–family conflict through role stress. Therefore, higher levels of psychological detachment were less conducive to medical workers' family–work conflict. This study has important theoretical significance and practical value for revealing the negative effects and mechanisms of empowering leadership and for medical workers to better deal with work–family relations. When individuals interact with others, perceived information is transmitted among their brains. The EEG-based hyperscanning technique, which provides an approach to explore dynamic brain activities between two or more interactive individuals and their underlying neural mechanisms, has been applied to study different aspects of social interactions since 2010. Recently there has been an increase in research on EEG-based hyperscanning of social interactions. This paper summarizes the application of EEG-based hyperscanning on the dynamic brain activities during social interactions according to the (...) experimental designs and contents, discusses the possibility of applying inter-brain synchrony to social communication systems and analyzes the contributions and the limitations of these investigations. Furthermore, this paper sheds light on some new challenges to future EEG-based hyperscanning studies and the emerging field of EEG-based hyperscanning for pursuing the broader research field of social interactions. With the widespread use of smartphones, patient-initiated recording in emergency departments (EDs) has become an increasing concern. In the high-pressure EDs environment, physicians frequently perceive such recordings as being motivated less by a desire to enhance understanding and more by a defensive intent to preserve evidence for potential disputes. This study investigates emergency physicians’ exposure to and perceptions of this phenomenon in Southwestern China. A cross-sectional survey was conducted via online snowball sampling among 306 emergency physicians from tertiary hospitals in (...) Southwestern China between September and October 2025. The study assessed the frequency with which physicians encounter patient-initiated recording, associated clinical scenarios, response strategies, and perceptions of ethical and legal implications. A total of 90.20% of respondents reported encountering patient-initiated recording within the past year. Among these physicians, 90.22% reported experiencing covert (undisclosed) recording, identifying the behavior through observation rather than patient disclosure. Commonly reported scenarios by the affected physicians included emergency diagnosis and treatment (77.90%) and dispute mediation (59.06%). Regarding attitudes, physicians rated perceived risks significantly higher than benefits on a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree, 5 = Strongly Agree); while acknowledging moderate utility for elderly patients (mean score = 3.29), they indicated that recording was perceived to promote defensive medical behavior (mean score = 4.82) and induced psychological pressure (mean score = 4.74). Moreover, 72.55% believed the practice negatively impacted the physician-patient relationship. Furthermore, 90.20% expressed a strong demand for professional training, prioritizing case-based analysis of legal disputes (88.89%) and informed consent protocols (88.24%). The high reported exposure to patient-initiated recording—particularly in covert forms—among the surveyed emergency physicians in Southwestern China highlights physicians’ prevalent concerns about a perceived strain on trust and their self-reported association with defensive medical behaviors. Moving beyond strict prohibitions, healthcare institutions should consider prioritizing transparent governance and standardized communication protocols. Furthermore, targeted medico-legal training is essential to clarify rights and obligations, which could potentially help establish clearer institutional boundaries for managing patient-initiated recording. ABSTRACT This is the second paper in a series of papers on juxtapositions between Chinese moral education and Western character education; the first paper analysed the reasons why the Western character education approach represented by neo-Aristotelian character education (neo-ACE) is not popular in China. However, the authors do not deem neo-ACE to be entirely incompatible with Chinese moral education and, in fact, identifying misalignments between neo-ACE and Chinese moral education helps identify which aspects of neo-ACE are potentially beneficial for introduction (...) and application in China. The present paper thus extends the remit of the previous paper by looking ahead and focusing on what Chinese moral educators can learn from neo-ACE, represented especially by the Jubilee Centre’s work. Four aspects are proposed: promoting the idea of the ‘flourishing student’, highlighting the importance of ‘virtue literacy’, absorbing wisdom from ‘positive psychology/education’, and teaching phronesis or practical wisdom. Against the backdrop of a global pandemic, this study investigates how U.S. higher education leaders have centered their crisis management on values and guiding ethical principles. We conducted 55 in-depth interviews with leaders from 30 U.S. higher education institutions, with most leaders participating in two interviews. We found that crisis plans created prior to the COVID-19 pandemic were inadequate due to the long duration and highly uncertain nature of the crisis. Instead, higher education leaders applied guiding principles on the fly (...) to support their decision-making. If colleges and universities infuse shared values into their future crisis plans, they will not have to develop a moral compass on the fly for the next pandemic. This paper suggests the following somewhat universal shared values: (1) engage in accuracy, transparency, and accountability; (2) foster deliberative dialog; (3) prioritize safety; (4) support justice, fairness, and equity; and (5) engage in an ethic of care. To navigate ethics tensions, leaders need to possess crisis-relevant expertise or ensure that such expertise is present among crisis management team members. Standing up formal ethics committees composed of diverse stakeholders also is instrumental in navigating tensions inherent in crises. The next pandemic is already on the horizon according to experts. Through infusing values into future crisis plans, higher education leaders can be confident that their responses will be grounded in their communities’ shared values. (shrink)

Transgender women experience serious psychiatric problems and high suicide rates. According to the interpersonal theory of suicide, thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness play major roles in suicidality and can be measured by the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire. However, no study has validated the use of the INQ in TGW. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the INQ among TGW. We recruited 198 TGW from Shenyang, China, using snowball sampling. The construct validity of the INQ was assessed through factor (...) analysis, and convergent and divergent validity were examined through a structural equation model with other psychosocial factors. The construct validation analysis supported a three-factor model with satisfactory fit indices: χ2/df = 1.54, RMSEA = 0.052, CFI = 0.931, TLI = 0.916, SRMR = 0.053. The thwarted belongingness was significantly associated with self-esteem and social support, and the social exclusion was significantly associated with loneliness, depression, entrapment, and defeat, suggesting satisfactory convergent and divergent validity for the three-factor model. The present findings indicate that for TGW, high social exclusion is important in assessing perceived interpersonal needs, while the notable deviation from previous two-factor model warrants further study.
