The previous studies have shown that human infants and domestic dogs follow the gaze of a human agent only when the agent has addressed them ostensively—e.g., by making eye contact, or calling their name. This evidence is interpreted as showing that they expect ostensive signals to precede referential information. The present study tested chimpanzees, one of the closest relatives to humans, in a series of eye-tracking experiments using an experimental design adapted from these previous studies. In the ostension conditions, a (...) human actor made eye contact, called the participant’s name, and then looked at one of two objects. In the control conditions, a salient cue, which differed in each experiment (a colorful object, the actor’s nodding, or an eating action), attracted participants’ attention to the actor’s face, and then the actor looked at the object. Overall, chimpanzees followed the actor’s gaze to the cued object in both ostension and control conditions, and the ostensive signals did not enhance gaze following more than the control attention-getters. However, the ostensive signals enhanced subsequent attention to both target and distractor objects (but not to the actor’s face) more strongly than the control attention-getters—especially in the chimpanzees who had a close relationship with human caregivers. We interpret this as showing that chimpanzees have a simple form of communicative expectations on the basis of ostensive signals, but unlike human infants and dogs, they do not subsequently use the experimenter’s gaze to infer the intended referent. These results may reflect a limitation of non-domesticated species for interpreting humans’ ostensive signals in inter-species communication. (shrink)

Ātman (soul) and Nairātmya (no soul) are, for the Brahmanical schools and the Buddhists respectively, equally fundamental tenets which neither side can concede to the other. Among the 16 formulations presented by Uddyotakara, the fifteenth, which is a proof of Ātman and is originally an indirect proof ( avīta/āvīta ), is presented in a prasaṅga -style, and contains double negation ( na nairātmyam ) in the thesis. However, it is perhaps Dharmakīrti who first transformed it into a normal style ( (...) sātmakam ). He is well aware of the law of excluded middle, and insisits that the negation is paryudāsa . On the Nyāya side, Uddyotakara at least seems to be unaware of the law of the logical equivalence of contraposition concerning pervasion ( vyāpti ). After Uddyotakara, however, Vyoman (Vyomaśiva), Bhāsarvajña and Vācaspatimiśra, all seem to be well aware of it. Dharmakīrti, in his conter-argument against the proof of ātman , discusses the negative expressions ‘‘ nairātmya ” and ‘‘ a-nairātmya ” Dharmakīrti here uses two logical arguments skillfully and tactically. As a critic of both the authenticity of the Veda and the existence of ātman , he insists on the theory of dichotomy and the equivalence of anvaya and vyatireka , whereas as an apologist he denies the application of these theories to the relation between the existence of ātman and the concept of nairātmya , because for him as a Buddhist the latter is not a negative but essentially positive state of affairs. This study examines the impact of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) advice on ethical judgment in accounting and auditing, particularly in comparison to conditions involving no advice and/or advice from a human auditor. We employ an experimental design, in which the independent variable consists of five distinct advice conditions, varying by source (GenAI or human auditor) and by framing context (deontological or consequentialist). We simulate an experimental scenario in which financial controllers either consider or disregard advice from external auditors during audit (...) negotiations. In this context, accounting majors are used as proxies for financial controllers working in the finance department. To assess how these conditions influence ethical judgment, we conducted several logistic regression analyses. Participants were accounting majors recruited from seven leading universities in Japan. The results provide compelling evidence that receiving advice, whether from GenAI or a human auditor, increases the likelihood of making a deontological judgment (i.e., a judgment grounded in moral duties, rules, or principles), compared to receiving no advice. This suggests that the impact of GenAI advice closely mirrors that of human auditors. Further analysis revealed that among participants receiving GenAI advice, those exhibiting a higher degree of algorithm appreciation (i.e., the tendency to perceive algorithmic advice as more credible) were significantly more inclined to make deontological judgments. Moreover, when comparing advice from GenAI and human auditors directly, the findings confirm that the effects of moral advice from both sources were remarkably similar. However, contextual factors played a critical role: participants with greater familiarity with consolidated accounting standards (KNOW) and those who had completed internships at accounting firms (INTER) were more likely to make deontological judgments—even when exposed to consequentialist advice (i.e., advice oriented toward maximizing overall welfare). These findings offer important implications for accounting ethics education and highlight the need to consider individual differences and contextual factors in algorithm-assisted decision-making. This work contrasts Giovanni Sartor’s view of inferential semantics of legal concepts with a probabilistic model of theory formation. The work further explores possibilities of implementing Kemp’s probabilistic model of theory formation in the context of mapping legal concepts between two individual legal systems. For implementing the legal concept mapping, we propose a cross-categorization approach that combines three mathematical models: the Bayesian Model of Generalization, the probabilistic model of theory formation, i.e., the Infinite Relational Model first introduced by Kemp et (...) al. and its extended model, i.e., the normal-IRM proposed by Herlau et al.. We apply our cross-categorization approach to datasets where legal concepts related to educational systems are respectively defined by the Japanese- and the Danish authorities according to the International Standard Classification of Education. The main contribution of this work is the proposal of a conceptual framework of the cross-categorization approach that, inspired by Sartor, attempts to explain reasoner’s inferential mechanisms. This article describes the rules and scripts that operate in a sub-Saharan African system, the Tijaniyya Islamic Sufi order in Kano, Nigeria. It analyzes the patriarchal bargains between women and men in the order and reveals how the actions of Muslim women with positions of spiritual authority were both independent and shaped by the order's patriarchy. The author argues that larger shifts across several decades in the Islamic world, the international Tijaniyya leadership, and the Nigerian state allowed Kano (...) Tijaniyya women to act differently and increase their spiritual authority and personal autonomy without breaking the rules of their bargain. The author concludes by suggesting that analyses of other Muslim societies may lead to a better understanding of which strategies lead to women's marginalization and which strategies result in successful bargaining. The standing screens on the title is the oldest work extant of KANO Motonobu's work as folding screens of thick colored flowers and birds with golden background. This thesis designates that the scenery and the motif of the work are in correspondence with both descriptions of the scenery of Pure Land in several Buddhist scriptures and the design of actual gardens. Firstly, a peacock on the right hand screen is focused to indicate the bird connotes the elements of auspicious (...) birds in Buddhism, such as Mahamayuri and Kalavinka.Secondly, the elements of the scenery in the work, such as the four seasons at the same time ∼ the depiction of perpetuity ∼ and the existence of a pond, are identified with the description of Pure Land in Kwan-mu-liang-shou-ching and Ta-wuliang-shou-ching. These elements of the garden in the work are placed similarly to the Pure Land style gardens, which are illustrated in "Center and Surrounds of Kyoto" 's. In consideration of the above factors, the conclusion that, in the work, KANO Motonobu succeeded to portray the ideal garden by combining the scenery of Pure Land and that of actual gardens, is drawn. To participate in health research, there is a need for well-administered informed consent. Understanding of informed consent, especially in international health research, is influenced by the participants' understanding of information and the meaning attached to the information communicated to them regarding the purpose and procedure of the research. Incorrect information and the power differential between researcher and participants may lead to participants becoming victims of harmful research procedures. Meningitis epidemics in Kano in early 1996 led to a response from (...) drug companies, especially Pfizer, as well as humanitarian workers from Médecins Sans Frontiers, which resulted in an unethical trial. Pfizer's drug trial during the epidemics has left a lasting controversy, which has yet to be resolved. This paper examines the key issues surrounding the controversy, discusses the context of informed decision-making, the ethical issues and implications of the incident, and concludes with some recommendations. Relevant texts, journals, Internet materials, newspaper articles and documentary materials on the conduct of the Pfizer's Trovan trial have been consulted. Four types of action (act intuitively, act rationally, act ignorantly, and act contextually – based on information provided) are identified as possible options for decision making. Participants most likely acted in ignorance due to poor understanding of the information contained in the verbal informed consent administered, thereby raising ethical issues. It is concluded that health research ethics committees have an important role to play nationally and locally in overseeing research, and in avoiding future occurrences. (shrink)

The study aimed to examine the effects of group discussion on the moral progression of Nigerian primary school children. Four Kohlberg‐type moral dilemmas were used for pre‐testing 79 Hausa Muslim boys, studying in Class Six in a primary school in Kano City. The 72 subjects whose moral reasoning was found to be at Stages One and Two were assigned to two experimental groups and a control group at each stage level. Experimental subjects were exposed to a moral dilemma with (...) different pieces of advice, representing moral reasoning of one (+1) and two (+2) stages above their initial stages, followed by group discussions. Experimental treatments were given weekly for four successive weeks; a different moral dilemma was used at each treatment session. Fifteen days after experimental treatment, both experimental and control subjects were post‐tested on four dilemmas. The shifts of experimental groups were compared with those of control groups. The data showed that +1 treatment produced significant shifts in moral reasoning of the experimental subjects. (shrink)

The study focused on investigating how Nigerian adolescents respond to Bronfenbrenner's and Kohlberg's moral dilemmas. Ninety Hausa Muslim adolescents (60 boys and 30 girls), studying in a day and two boarding secondary schools in Kano City took part in the inquiry. It was found that the subjects tended to resolve Bronfenbrenner's dilemmas in an adult‐approved direction. The results also showed that day school pupils’ moral reasoning was more advanced than that of boarding school pupils, and subjects’ socio‐economic background and (...) sex did not relate to the ways they resolved the moral dilemmas. Because of their fundamental mission, generating knowledge through research and disseminating it via teaching and publications, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can serve as a vehicle for enacting new worldviews and approaches for sustainability transformation. Several commentators argue that there remains a gap between cerebellar long-term depression (LTD) studied in vitro and cerebellar functions such as motor learning. Recent developments in a gene-targeting technique for producing mutant mice defective in particular gene products has opened a new era for the study of synaptic plasticity and learning. There are three mutants in which cerebellar LTD are clearly deficient in vitro. Two of these mice show clear impairment in the conditioned eyeblink response, a paradigm known to involve (...) the cerebellum. In contrast, one mutant with apparently normal cerebellar LTD showed no impairment in the conditioned eyeblink response. These new lines of evidence support the view that cerebellar LTD is a cellular basis for discrete motor learning. (shrink)

The cellular basis of motor learning in the cerebellum has been attributed mostly to long-term depression (LTD) at excitatory parallel fiber (PF)-Purkinje cell (PC) synapses. LTD is induced when PFs are activated in conjunction with a climbing fiber (CF), the other excitatory input to PCs. Recently, by using whole-cell patch-clamp recording from PCs in cerebellar slices, a new form of synaptic plasticity was discovered. Stimulation of excitatory CFs induced a long-lasting (usually longer than 30 min) of 30 sec) and the (...) durations of RP (>30 min) strongly suggests that some intracellular biochemical machinery is involved. Pharmacological evidence suggests that protein kinases are involved in RP of inhibitory synapses and LTD of excitatory PF synapses. Besides the well-described LTD, RP could be a cellular mechanism that plays an important role in motor learning. (shrink)

In 1994 and 1995, several new reports appeared regarding cellular mechanisms of LTD. These concern (1) involvement of mGluRl, (2) involvement of glutamate receptor δ2 subunit (GluRδ2), (3) involvement of Ca2+ release from intracellular stores, and (4) origin of nitric oxide (NO). I would like to add these new results to the review article by Crépel et al. [CRÉPEL et al.].

The decolonization of British India can be summarised in the following three main points. First, independence was achieved through a movement based on non-violent principles and led by political parties; second, independence was achieved not through war but through a transfer of power; and third, independence took the form of a partition based on religious identity.

This study conducted an in-depth exploration of the innovative design of Tibetan ethnic costumes on the basis of the Kano model. Through the comprehensive use of various research methods, such as literature research, fieldwork, case analysis and questionnaire surveys, we have gained a comprehensive understanding of the historical origin, developmental changes, style characteristics and cultural connotations of Tibetan clothing. Focusing on the balance between inheritance and innovation of Tibetan costumes, this study analyses user needs and divides them into four (...) levels—basic function, aesthetic design, cultural inheritance and innovation and integration—and classifies and quantitatively evaluates these needs by using the relevant calculation methods of the Kano model. This study aims to provide a theoretical basis and practical guidance for the design of Tibetan national costumes through scientific market research and user demand analysis and to promote the modernization, inheritance and development of Tibetan costume culture. David Gauthier in his article, Maximization constrained: the rationality of cooperation, tries to defend of the joint strategy in situations which no outcome is both equilibrium and optimal. Prisoner’s Dilemma is the most familiar example of these situations. He first starts with some quotes by Hobbes in Leviathan; Hobbes, in chapter 15 discusses an objection by someone is called Foole, and then will reject his view. In response to Foole, Hobbes presents two strategies (i.e. joint and individual) and two kinds (...) of agents in such problems including Prisoner’s Dilemma – i.e. straightforward maximizer (SM) and constrained maximizer(CM). Then he considers two arguments respectively for SM and CM, and he will show that why in an ideal and transparent situation, the first argument fails and the second one would be the only valid argument. likewise, in the following part of his article, he considers more realistic situations with translucency and he concludes that under some conditions, joint strategy would be still the rational decision. The first major work in the history of philosophy to bear the title "Metaphysics" was the treatise by Aristotle that we have come to know by that name. But Aristotle himself did not use that title or even describe his field of study as 'metaphysics'; the name was evidently coined by the first century C.E. editor who assembled the treatise we know as Aristotle's Metaphysics out of various smaller selections of Aristotle's works. The title 'metaphysics' -- literally, 'after the Physics' (...) -- very likely indicated the place the topics discussed therein were intended to occupy in the philosophical curriculum. By providing a comprehensive account of Kant’s significance in Latvia, the study contributes to broader discussions on the integration of global intellectual heritage into national and local contexts. In Carnap’s autobiography, he tells the story how one night in January 1931, “the whole theory of language structure” in all its ramifications “came to [him] like a vision”. The shorthand manuscript he produced immediately thereafter, he says, “was the first version” of Logical Syntax of Language. This document, which has never been examined since Carnap’s death, turns out not to resemble Logical Syntax at all, at least on the surface. Wherein, then, did the momentous insight of 21 January 1931 (...) consist? We seek to answer this question by placing Carnap’s shorthand manuscript in the context of his previous efforts to accommodate scientific theories and metalinguistic claims within Wittgenstein’s Tractatus theory of meaning. The breakthrough of January 1931 consists, from this viewpoint, in the rejection of the Tractatus theory in favor of the meta-mathematical perspective of Hilbert, Gödel, and Tarski. This was not yet the standpoint of the published Logical Syntax, as we show, but led naturally to the “principle of tolerance” and thus to Carnap’s mature philosophy, in which the inconsistencies between this first view and the principle of tolerance, which survived into the published Syntax, were overcome. This essay concerns Dedekind’s “mathematical structuralism,”by which we mean methodological features characteristic for the approach to mathematics in his mature writings. The discussion starts with some background on forerunners, especially Gauss, Dirichlet, and Riemann, whose “conceptual” style of work influenced him strongly. But Dedekind went further than them, by making methodological choices that are more distinctly and fully “structuralist”. This includes his resolute acceptance of actually infinite systems, understood within a “logical” framework, and studied not just axiomatically, but also in (...) terms of isomorphisms and related notions (since 1871). As an illustration, the essay discusses his early adoption and strikingly modern transformation of Galois theory, together with his contributions to algebraic number theory. After that, the essayturns to Dedekind’s more “foundational” contributions, i.e., his writings on the real numbers, the natural numbers, and set theory. It shows that the same methodological choices inform them. Yet his approach kept evolving in subtle ways too, especially in terms of the centrality of functions (_Abbildungen_, mappings). (shrink)

István Hont identified a point in the history of political thought at which republicanism and commercialism became separated. According to Hont, Emmanuel Sieyès proposed that a monarchical republic should be formed. By contrast the Jacobins, in favour of a republic led by the people, rejected not only Sieyès’s political proposal, but also the economic ideology that went with it. Sieyès was in favour of a commercial republic; the Jacobins were not. This was, according to Hont, a defining moment in the (...) history of political thought. In this article, I offer a different analysis of that particular moment in the history of the commercial republic, one that instead of focusing on Sieyès and the Jacobins, looks at the thought of Girondins philosophers Nicolas de Condorcet and Sophie de Grouchy. I argue that their arguments provide sound models for a commercial republic, reconciling late 18th century republican ideals in which virtue was central, with the need for a flourishing and internationally active market economy. As these opening quotes acknowledge, the Prisoner’s Dilemma (PD) represents a core puzzle within the formal mathematics of game theory.3 Its rise in conspicuity is evident figure 2.1 above demonstrating a relatively steady rise in incidences of the phrase’s usage between 1960 to 1995, with a stable presence persisting into the twenty first century. This famous two-person “game,” with a stock narrative cast in terms of two prisoners who each independently must choose whether to remain silent or speak, each advancing (...) self-interest at the expense of the other and thereby achieving a mutually suboptimal outcome, mires any social interaction it is applied to into perplexity. The logic of this game proves the inverse of Adam Smith’s invisible hand: individuals acting on self interest will achieve a mutually suboptimal outcome. However, as this chapter illuminates, the assumptions underlying game theory drive this conclusion. (shrink)

Critical discussion of J.M.E. Moravcsik's paper on Plato's method of division.

Geoffrey Rose’s prevention paradox points to a tension between two prima facie plausible moral principles: that we should save the greater number and that weshould save the most at risk. This paper argues that a novel moral theory, ex-ante contractualism, captures our intuitions in many prevention paradox cases, regardless of our interpretation of probability claims. However, it goes on to show that it might be impossible to square ex-ante contractualism with all of our moral intuitions. It concludes that even if (...) ex-ante contractualism cannot furnish an entire ethics of risk, it does identify important considerations for any such theory. (shrink)

Among various cases that equally admit of evidentialist reasoning, the supposedly evidentialist solution has varying degrees of intuitive attractiveness. I suggest that cooperative reasoning may account for the appeal of apparently evidentialist behavior in the cases in which it is intuitively attractive, while the inapplicability of cooperative reasoning may account for the unattractiveness of evidentialist behaviour in other cases. A collective causal power with respect to agreed outcomes, not evidentialist reasoning, makes cooperation attractive in the Prisoners' Dilemma. And a natural (...) though unwarranted assumption of such a power may account for the intuitive appeal of the one-box response in Newcomb's Problem. (shrink)

Kant’s dissertation for the Master’s degree Succinct Exposition of Some Meditations on Fire was written in Latin in 1755 as a sample (specimen) preceding a Master’s exam, but its first printing did not appear until 1838. What is the relevance of this Master’s dissertation for historical and philosophical studies? To answer this question I analyse the structure and give a brief summary of the dissertation, look at the history of its writing and try to identify the place of this work (...) among Kant’s other papers on natural philosophy. I then demonstrate that Kant’s concept of ether as an elastic matter of fire, heat and light containing the forces of attraction and repulsion originates in the dissertation On Fire. I identify the provisions in Kant’s early works which he later develops in the Master’s dissertation and establish continuity between the text of On Fire and the so-called Physical Monadology, draw parallels between the ideas enunciated by Kant in his first dissertation and the interpretation of ether in the printed works that followed. Finally, I put forward the hypothesis of the heuristic potential of the On Fire treatise for the analysis of Kant’s manuscript legacy. Perhaps this dissertation will enable researchers to clear up some tangled propositions in Kant’s Opus Postumum. However, a series of further studies is needed to verify the hypothesis. (shrink)

Nearly as famous as his denial of the existence of matter is Berkeley's insistence that his philosophy is somehow a defense of commonsense. This is most often taken to mean that Berkeley thinks of his philosophy as supporting commonsense beliefs. However, the inadequacies of such views have persuaded some to disregard entirely Berkeley's claims about commonsense. Both readings are undesirable. Extant interpretations misunderstand the relationship between Berkeley's philosophy and commonsense. In this paper, I present a new account of how to (...) understand Berkeley's so-called defense of commonsense; it is not a defense-cum­-apology for commonsense beliefs, but a defensive attack against a skeptical threat. I then examine two rival accounts of the defense of commonsense and show how each fails to satisfy the criteria for a successful account. In 1887–1894, Richard Dedekind explored a number of ideas within the project of placing mappings at the very center of pure mathematics. We review two such initiatives: the introduction in 1894 of groups into Galois theory intrinsically via field automorphisms, and a new attempt to define the continuum via maps from ℕ to ℕ in 1891. These represented the culmination of Dedekind’s efforts to reconceive pure mathematics within a theory of sets and maps and throw new light onto the nature (...) of his structuralism and its specificity in relation to the work of other mathematicians. Na trajetória de Rachel Reis, uma cantora e compositora baiana natural de Feira de Santana, é notável a integração dos símbolos e ícones relacionados aos itãs da orixá Iemanjá em sua identidade artística. No ensaio fotográfico produzido especificamente para a revista Glamour em fevereiro de 2024, a artista revela elementos visuais que ajudam a compreender a sua identidade e (...) conexão com a divindade marítima iorubá. Ao explorar o conceito de arkhé, conforme definido por Muniz Sodré (2005) como a base primordial que impulsiona a cultura e os rituais dos orixás, este trabalho busca investigar como a artista utiliza esses elementos, destacados especialmente nas fotos da revista Glamour, para construir sua identidade visual.
