Religion and spirituality (R/S) serve as coping mechanisms for circumstances that threaten people’s psychological well-being. However, using R/S inappropriately to deal with difficulties and problems in daily life may include the practice of Spiritual Bypass (SB). SB refers to avoiding addressing emotional problems and trauma, rather than healing and learning from them. On the other hand, coping strategies may be determined by the cultural context. This study aims to describe the presence of SB in individuals who may have experienced stressful (...) situations and to understand the influence of culture on SB by comparing SB in two culturally different groups. The sample consists of a total of 435 people, 262 of Honduran nationality and 173 of Spanish nationality. Both groups are approximately equivalent in age and gender. The degree of SB, stressful events, perception of social support and spiritual well-being are examined, respectively, through the Spiritual Bypass Scale, and specific items and subscales from the Social Readjustment Rating Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, and the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy - Spiritual Wellbeing. The results showed a higher spiritual well-being and use of SB in the Honduran sample as compared to the Spanish sample, but similar social support and stressful events. Furthermore, some of the factors predicting SB were different between the two samples. While age and a greater number of R/S practices were important in both samples, for the Honduran sample the variables that best explained SB were being a Christian, having greater social support, fewer stressful events, and greater attendance at church or temple. For the Spanish sample, however, the variable that best explained SB was studying R/S texts. Therefore, SB must be understood within the culture in which it develops, since in different cultural contexts it appears to relate to differing factors. Philosophical hermeneutics has become an unavoidable reference in the field throughout the twentieth century but has seldom been extended to draw conclusions in the area of political theory. Two intellectuals that have contributed to such a project are Charles Taylor and Gianni Vattimo, although they exhibit some important differences in key aspects of this enterprise, both at the level of the conceptual premises and at that of the prescribed policies and objectives. Here I examine these thinkers’ notion of tradition – (...) an essential feature of hermeneutical theories – its ontological underpinnings, and the place each of them assign to it in sociopolitical decision-making, especially in the context of multicultural societies. In the end, I argue for the superiority of Taylor’s model of understanding and employing tradition in current political and moral debates. (shrink)

This article seeks to revive the debate between the moral philosophies of Charles Taylor and Michel Foucault. This dialogue, barely sketched by both intellectuals and little explored in subsequent literature, is justified both by some relevant similarities between their proposals and by the crucial differences that characterize their respective systems. By recovering their ontological presuppositions, the article analyzes the possibilities each thinker offers for moral evaluation and comparison, arguing that this is one of the most compelling reasons for defending the (...) Resumen: En este artículo se presenta la posición de dos filósofos asociados a la hermenéutica, Gianni Vattimo y Charles Taylor, respecto del status del conocimiento científico en el mundo contemporáneo. Mediante una somera exposición de los rasgos fundamentales de sus respectivas ontologías y epistemologías, se busca realizar una comparación crítica. This essay aims to recover the conflictive nodes in T. Hobbes’ theory regarding language, science and truth. Revisiting the diverse and contradictory readings that have arisen around these areas of his work we intend to point out the tensions inherent to Hobbes’ scientific project. No definitive answer is given to close the discussion; instead we aim to offer hints to identify the author’s positions that are hard to reconcile. La migración y la población migrante son elementos fundamentales en las representaciones audiovisuales del llamado Mar de Plástico de Almería. Este artículo trabajará sobre dichas representaciones utilizando un caso de estudio específico: el documental televisivo Bienvenidos al paraíso, que fue emitido en el año 2000 en La 2 de TVE, en un contexto de creciente interés por las tensiones ecosociales del Mar de Plástico y, sobre todo, de debates en torno a la migración. Se analizará cómo afectan las negociaciones entre (...) diferentes actores mediáticos, económico-industriales y políticos a los contenidos y a las trayectorias de los programas televisivos, en particular para el caso específico de las representaciones de esta agroindustria y sus trabajadores y trabajadoras migrantes, y se extraerán conclusiones que tienen en cuenta algunos debates de los estudios postcoloniales. Además del análisis textual, se ha realizado trabajo de archivo relacionado con la distribución, exhibición y recepción del documental, que ayuda a entender su impacto y su posterior censura. The aim of this paper is to explain the main features of the reception of Peirce's theories in Spanish linguistics and to explore the keys of application of those theories to the future development of Linguistics.

Traditionally, it has been held that critical thinking requires a set of cognitive skills and dispositions. The present work supports the opinion of some theorists who have proposed that these might not be the only two ingredients necessary for improving critical thinking. More specifically, new factors could be necessary if critical thinking is to be achieved, such as gaining an epistemological understanding of critical thinking; reaching a given level of epistemological development, or the beliefs that are held about thinking. Despite decades of neuroscientific research, psychiatric conditions continue to resist clear and consistent biological explanation. This article critically examines the dominance of neuro-reductionist models in psychiatry and introduces behavior analysis as a compelling alternative – one that explicitly rejects the notion that psychiatric conditions can be reduced to brain dysfunctions. Rooted in radical behaviorism, behavior analysis highlights the central role of contextual variables and learning processes in the development and maintenance of psychiatric conditions. By conceptualizing psychiatric phenomena at the level (...) of behavior—understood as the dynamic interaction between individuals and their environments – this framework aligns with contemporary approaches such as 4E Cognition, network theory, and phenomenology, while contributing a distinctive emphasis on learning histories and the use of functional analysis as a key tool for understanding psychiatric conditions. The article examines the philosophical underpinnings of behavior analysis, its implications for clinical practice and psychiatric research, and its potential to foster interdisciplinary dialogue. Ultimately, it argues that incorporating behavioral principles into psychiatry can deepen our understanding of mental suffering and promote more context-sensitive, individualized, and effective interventions. Judo is a multifactorial sport where many variables or key performance indicators such as force-velocity profile, bioenergetic capacity, technical and tactical skills, and cognitive and emotional competence play a role and influence the final result. While there have been many academic studies of these variables, usually in isolation, none have examined KPIs holistically or analyzed their impact on strategic performance. The main objective of the present study, therefore, is to apply a novel and easily replicable methodology to identify and prioritize (...) the main KPIs affecting performance in professional judo. Such a methodology was applied to the High-Performance Judo Centre of Valencia, using a multi-criteria decision aid technique: the analytic network process. The ANP is used to identify and quantify cause and effect relationships not only between KPIs but also between KPIs and performance objectives. Further, the ANP offers effective results when there is a lack of historical KPI data, because it is based on experts' opinions and judgments. A judo expert group comprising elite judo coaches and half-lightweight male judokas applied the methodology to discriminate between the characteristics required when aiming to reach high-level strategic objectives. The JEG, which consisted of five elite judokas, national and international champions, and three Olympic coaches—including a former European champion and silver medalist in a world championship—provided high added value to the study. The main findings were that the KPIs that made the most difference were mostly psychological, specifically motivation, stress, and team cohesion. Of these, motivation was by far the most important KPI for success in our case study, so judokas should make sure that they analyze it properly. Motivation is usually intrinsic to the competitor and should be maintained at a high level, not only during tournaments but also during daily training and lifestyle activities. Physical and other specific forms of training, as well as lifestyle KPIs, are very important for the elite competitor but are not sufficient to reach high-level objectives. The most important of these KPIs were Kumi-Kata, dual career, focus and concentration level, scouting, nutrition, and basic technique. Power and strength were the most important physical KPIs. In general, these are essential for meeting strategic objectives, but they do not make the crucial difference. This suggests that professional psychological support should be provided in daily training and that international team composition and internships should be fostered. (shrink)

A defence of the idea that there are sui generis duties of love: duties, that is, that we owe to people in virtue of standing in loving relationships with them. I contrast this non‐reductionist position with the widespread reductionist view that our duties to those we love all derive from more generic moral principles. The paper mounts a cumulative argument in favour of the non‐reductionist position, adducing a variety of considerations that together speak strongly in favour of adopting it. We argue that thoughts are structures of concepts, and that concepts should be individuated by their origins, rather than in terms of their semantic or epistemic properties. Many features of cognition turn on the vehicles of content, thoughts, rather than on the nature of the contents they express. Originalism makes concepts available to explain, with no threat of circularity, puzzling cases concerning thought. In this paper, we mention Hesperus/Phosphorus puzzles, the Evans-Perry example of the ship seen through different windows, and (...) : Sabır, hayatın zorlukları karşısında daha sakin davranma ve problemlerle mantıksal bir biçimde başa çıkabilmeyi sağlayan önemli bir erdemdir. Din ise içerdiği ritüeller ve öğretiler yoluyla insana pozitif duygular kazandırmakta ve sabır davranışını geliştirmektedir. Dini kaynaklarda sıkıntılar karşısında sabretme birçok yerde geçmektedir. Bu sebeple çalışmamız çağımızın en önemli problemlerinden biri olan şiddete ve kızgınlığa karşı koruyucu gücü bulunan sabrın gelişiminde dinin etkisini koyması açısından önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı üniversite öğrencilerinde dindarlık ile sabır ilişkisini tespit etmektir. Çalışmanın örneklemi Nevşehir Hacı (...) Bektaş Veli Üniversitesi İlahiyat fakültesinde öğrenim görmekte olan toplam 230 gönüllü öğrenciden oluşmaktadır. Çalışmada veri toplama araçları olarak Kişisel Bilgi Formu, Dini Yönelim Ölçeği ve Sabır Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Anketler yüz yüze gerçekleştirilmiş ve anketleri cevaplama süresi 15-20 dakika sürmüştür. Uygulama yapmadan önce çalışmaya katılanlara verilerin gizli kalacağı söylenmiştir. Araştırmada ulaşılan verilerin analizinde SPSS (v23) yazılımı tercih edilmiştir. Bu çalışmada öncelikli olarak cinsiyet, yaş, sosyo-ekonomik durum, baba eğitim düzeyi ve anne eğitim düzeyi değişkenlerine bakılmış ve ardından da sabır ve dindarlığın demografik değişkenler ile korelasyonu üzerinde durulmuştur. Son olarak da dindarlıkla sabır arasındaki ilişki belirlenmiştir. Yapılmış olan analizlerde korelasyon, t-testi, tek yönlü ANOVA ve Pearson korelasyon testleri uygulanmış ve önemli bulgular çalışmada sunulmuştur. Yapılan araştırmadan özetle şu bilgiler elde edilmiştir: Kadınların dini yönelim düzeyi ile erkeklerin dini yönelim düzeyleri arasında istatiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunamamıştır. Yine kadınların sabır puanları ile erkeklerin sabır puanları arasında anlamlı bir fark tespit edilememiştir. Örneklem yaş değişkeni açısından ele alındığında ise 18-19 yaş arasında olanların hem sorgulama dini yönelim hem de dini yönelim puanları 22 yaş üstü olanlara göre daha düşük çıkmış ve bu durum anlamlı bir fark oluşturmuştur. Sosyo-ekonomik durum düzeyinde ise hem dini yönelim puanları hem de sabır ve alt boyut puanları açısından anlamlı bir fark bulunamamıştır. Baba eğitim durumu değişkenine göre katılımcıların hem dini yönelim hem de sabır puanları arasında anlamlı bir ilişki tespit edilememiştir. Anne eğitim durumu değişkenine göre kişilerarası sabır alt boyut puanı ve sabır puanı bakımından istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir fark bulunmaktadır. Buna göre; annesi ilköğretim mezunu olanların kişilerarası sabır alt boyut puanı ve sabır puanı, annesi ortaöğretim mezunu olanlara göre daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Bu veriler ışığında araştırmamızın literatüre katkı sağlayacağı düşünülmüştür. (shrink)

R.G. Collingwood defined historical knowledge as essentially ‘scientific’, and saw the historian's task as the ‘re-enactment of past thoughts’. The author argues the need to go beyond Collingwood, first by demonstrating the authenticity of available evidence, and secondly, using Namier as an example, by considering methodology as well as epistemology, and the need to relate past thoughts to their present context. The ‘law of the consumption of time’ encourages historians to focus on landmark events, theories and generalisations, thus breaking from (...) Collingwood's emphasis on fidelity to past ideas and interpreting the past from the concepts of the present. This conflict can only be reconciled by the study of historiography. (shrink)

In this article, which is the first of two to examine the ideas of R. S. Peters on moral education, consideration is given to his justificatory arguments found in Ethics and Education. Here he employs presupposition arguments to show to what anyone engaging in moral discourse is committed. The result is a group of procedural principles which are recommended to be employed in moral education. This article is an attempt to examine the presupposition arguments Peters employs, to comment on the (...) procedural principles he believes are presupposed, and to consider the strength of the presupposition argument. My conclusion is that Peters's arguments fail to establish the conclusion he arrives at, and that any gains from the form of argument he uses are hollow. (shrink)

R. S. Peters on Education and Ethics reissues seven titles from Peters' life's work. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the books are concerned with the philosophy of education and ethics. Topics include moral education and learning, authority and responsibility, psychology and ethical development and ideas on motivation amongst others. The books discuss more traditional theories and philosophical thinkers as well as exploring later ideas in a way which makes the subjects they discuss still relevant today.

Peters's views on moral education are to be found in several books and articles written over a period of about 20 years. Two essential elements of his ideas are what he calls procedural principles and basic rules. This article is an attempt to consider his recommendations, particularly in terms of any practical assistance that can be derived from them for those interested in moral education. Close examination reveals some inconsistencies, vagueness and difficulties which suggest problems for his procedural approach and (...) raise the issue of whether alternative, more positive efforts should be reconsidered. I had a strange dream, or half-waking vision, not long ago. I found myself at the top of a mountain in the mist, feeling very pleased with myself, not just for having climbed the mountain, but for having achieved my life's ambition, to find a way of answering moral questions rationally. But as I was preening myself on this achievement, the mist began to clear, and I saw that I was surrounded on the mountain top by the graves of all (...) those other philosophers, great and small, who had had the same ambition, and thought they had achieved it. And I have come to see, reflecting on my dream, that, ever since, the hard-working philosophical worms have been nibbling away at their systems and showing that the achievement was an illusion. True, their skeletons, indigestible to worms, remained, and were surprisingly similar to one another. But I was led to think again about what one can, and what one cannot, achieve in this direction. [R. M. Sainsbury] Evans argued that most ordinary proper names were Russellian: to suppose that they have no bearer is to suppose that they have no meaning. The first part of this paper addresses Evans's arguments, and finds them wanting. Evans also claimed that the logical form of some negative existential sentences involves 'really' (e.g. 'Hamlet didn't really exist'). One might be tempted by the view, even if one did not accept its Russellian motivation. However, I suggest that Evans gives (...) no adequate account of 'really', and I point to unclarities in Wiggins's similar, but distinct, attempt to use 'really' in the logical form of true negative existentials. /// [David Wiggins] Evans was not wrong (I maintain) to say that the senses of genuine proper names invoke and require objects. Names in fiction or hypothesis mimic such names. Pace Evans, Sainsbury and free logicians, proper names are scopeless. (Evans's 'Julius' is not a name.) Names create a presumption of existential generalization. In sentences such as 'Vulcan does not really exist', that presumption is bracketed. The sentence specifies by reference to story or report a concept identical with Vulcan and declares it be really uninstantiated. (The sentence, which partakes of play, is a kind of palimpsest.) It is often assumed by many, especially non-Christians, that he will become a Christian if and only if he judges that the evidence available to him shows that it is more likely than not that the Christian theological system is true, that, in mathematical terms, on the evidence available to him, the probability of its truth is greater than half. The ideas extend to classify the degrees of complements and splittings. Several ramifications of the classification are discussed, together with an analysis of the structure of the degrees of pairs of r.e. summands of r.e. spaces.
