Prior research has demonstrated that the adverse consequences of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic may go beyond its economic hardships and physical health concerns, having a significant influence on psychological distress for individuals under quarantine. Nevertheless, relatively little attention has been paid to exploring the risk and protective factors in the link between COVID-19 infection risk and psychological distress among young adults. Following a socioecological framework, the current study examines the moderating role of grit and social support in the association (...) between COVID-19 infection risk and depressive symptoms. A sample of 1,251 young adults under home quarantine was involved in this study, and they were asked to complete a set of self-reported questionnaires online. Results of a linear regression analysis exhibited that COVID-19 infection risk was positively associated with depressive symptoms in young adults in quarantine. Moreover, moderation analyses showed that this association was moderated by perseverance and social support. To be specific, for those reporting higher levels of social support, this linkage was not significantly positive; in contrast, for those reporting lower levels of social support, perseverance was a significant protective factor for depressive symptoms when young adults were exposed to a high infection risk of COVID-19. The current study suggests that greater social support is essential to helping young adults deal with possible negative emotions in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, university-based counseling services should pay specific attention to those young adults with relatively insufficient social support resources and low levels of perseverance. (shrink)

The rise of humanistic Buddhism in the early twentieth century was a direct reaction against the practice of rituals for the dead by highlighting the importance of serving and benefiting the livings in this world here and now. Nevertheless, almost one hundred years later today, rituals for the dead continue to play very important role in Humanistic Buddhism. This paper analyses the ritual theory of Master Xing Yun (星雲), one of the leading figures in contemporary Humanistic Buddhism, and examines how (...) Fo Guang Shan—founded by Xing Yu—has recreated rituals not only for the sake of the dead but also for the spiritual advancement of living human beings. I argue that (1) Humanistic Buddhism does not entirely reject rituals; (2) ritual practice in Humanistic Buddhism has maintained the idea of transcendence of Buddhism, thus actually sanctifying the secular life of Buddhists and extending the sacred space to the public arena beyond the temple walls. Despite advancements in critical care medicine, moral challenges in end-of-life care persist. Approximately 80% of ICU deaths occur after decisions are made to limit or withdraw life-sustaining treatments. ICU nurses frequently experience moral dilemma when their professional judgment conflicts with clinical realities or institutional constraints. This meta-synthesis systematically integrated qualitative evidence to explore ICU nurses’ experiences, alongside the sources and impacts of this dilemma. We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CINAHL, CNKI, and Wanfang databases from (...) inception to May 2025, ultimately including six qualitative studies from six countries. The analysis identified three core themes: (1) Sources of moral dilemmas; (2) Impacts of moral dilemmas on nurses; (3) Coping with moral dilemmas. The sources of moral dilemmas comprise five sub-themes: (1)Conflict between futile treatment and dignity preservation; (2) Infringement of patients’ right to informed consent and autonomy; (3) Lack of nursing voice in clinical decision-making; (4) Insufficient family involvement in end-of-life care; and (5) Inadequate organizational support. The impact of moral dilemmas includes two sub-themes: (1) Distress experience and emotional exhaustion and (2) Professional burnout. These findings highlight the critical importance of recognizing that ICU nurses operate within a complex moral environment shaped by interwoven institutional structures, cultural norms, and relational dynamics. Therefore, providing effective support requires the implementation of systematic interventions, which should encompass comprehensive moral training, strong interdisciplinary collaboration, and the formulation of organizational policies that clearly prioritize nurses’ autonomy and the maintenance of patients’ dignity. This review highlights the urgent need to foster supportive moral environments globally to alleviate moral dilemma and improve the quality of end-of-life care in ICUs. (shrink)
