IntroductionThe present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the Active Communication Education program on the social/emotional impacts of hearing loss in a group of older adults with a cochlear implant.DesignProspective cohort study design, with a “within-subject” control procedure.Study SampleTwenty adults over-65 post-lingually deafened CI users. All subjects were required to be native Italian speakers, to have normal cognitive level, have no significant psychiatric conditions and/or diagnosed incident dementia, and used CI for at least 9 months.Materials and MethodsTwenty participants were (...) assessed using the Hearing Handicap Inventory for the Elderly, the Geriatric Depression Scale, and the Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Scale before, during, and after ACE program, with a one and 6-month follow up. The cognitive and audiological evaluation was carried out before commencing the ACE program.ResultsThe ACE program had a positive impact by reducing HL’s social/emotional effects. Participants benefited from a rehabilitative approach by improving multilevel skills: comprehension of audiological and hearing dimensions, acquisition of communicative, pragmatic and problem-solving strategies, and interaction and sharing of experiences with peers.ConclusionAlthough targeting the older adults with moderate HL, the ACE program also seemed to benefit older adult CI users. An improvement in social and emotional adaptation to hearing difficulties can, in turn, significantly promote optimal use of CI in the older adults, thereby possibly reducing the risk of losing motivation and engagement in device use and in rehabilitation protocols. The interpretation of Hegel has been a focal point of philosophical controversy ever since the beginning of the twentieth century, both among Marxists and in the major European philosophical schools. Yet despite wide differences of emphasis most interpretations of Hegel share important similarities. They link his idea of Reason to the revolutionary and rationalist tradition which led to the French Revolution, and they interpret his dialectic as implying a latently atheist and even materialist world outlook. Lucio Colletti directly challenges (...) this picture of Hegel. He argues that Hegel was an essentially Christian philosopher, and that his dialectic was explicitly anti-materialist in both intention and effect. In contrast to earlier views, Colletti maintains that there is no contradiction between Hegel’s method and his system, once it is accepted that his thought is an exercise in Absolute Idealism stemming from a long Christian humanist tradition. He claims, on the contrary, that intellectual inconsistency is rather to be found in the works of Engels, Lenin, Lukás, Kojève and others, who have attempted to adapt Hegel to their own philosophical priorities. Colletti places his argument in the context of a broad re-examination of the whole relationship between Marxism and the Enlightenment, giving novel emphasis to the relationship between Marxism and Kant. He concludes by re-asserting the importance in Marxism of empirical science against the claim of “infinite reason,” while at the same time showing how Marx did transform key ideas in Hegelian thought to construct a consistently materialist dialectic. This paper aims to contribute to the present debate about business ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that the Journal of Business Ethics is hosting. Numerous contributions argued theoretical frameworks and taxonomies of CSR practices. The authors want to ground in this knowledge and provide further evidence about how companies adopt CSR practices to address stakeholders’ claims and consolidate their trust. Evidence was provided by a longitudinal case study about an Italian food company that is one of the largest producers (...) of baby food. This company reshaped its corporate strategy along three decades through the adoption of CSR practices in order to win stakeholders’ trust about food safety and supply chain behaviour. The empirical exercise was informed by a literature review of the relevant contributions in terms of CSR business practices and levels of efforts to adopt them. In light of this review, the authors adopted for the research framework the taxonomy of business practices proposed by Spiller (2000, “Ethical Business and Investment: A Model for Business and Society”, Journal of Business Ethics 27, 149-160) and the levels of commitment towards CSR proposed by Stahl and Grigsby (1997, Strategic Management; Total Quality & Global Competition (Blackwell, Oxford)). As a consequence, one of the main bases of the traditional Platonist interpretation of Euclid is refuted. Arguments about the constructivist nature of Euclids mathematical philosophy are given.

Resumen Los organismos genéticamente modificados constituyen un caso típico de intervención “tenocrática” sobre la vida. Su proliferación está implicando una serie de consecuencias sobre el ambiente y la salud humana y ambiental. Esto demanda un discernimiento integral, tal como reclama Laudado Si’. Tal discernimiento debe ser realizado con intervención de diversos métodos y agentes: biológicos, ecológicos, económicos, sociológicos, pero también éticos. Desde su particular visión, la teología tiene una responsabilidad de evaluación. Una teología de la vida que aporta su visión (...) de este mundo viviente, creado evolutivamente, en el que se encuentra el ser humano. El paradigma de la “tecnocracia” en Laudato Si’ resulta útil para abordar este tema. Abstract Genetically modified organisms are a typical case of “technocratic” intervention in life. Their proliferation is entailing a series of consequences for the environment, and human and environmental health. This demands an integral discernment, as Laudato Si’ calls for. Such discernment must be carried out with the intervention of various methods and agents: biological, ecological, economic, sociological, but also ethical. From its particular vision, theology has a responsibility of evaluation. A theology of life that contributes its vision of this living world, created in evolution, in which the human being finds himself. The paradigm of “technocracy” in Laudato Si’ is useful to address this issue. (shrink)

Le rôle de l'intellectuel est lié, à divers titres, à la vie publique où règne le débat public. Il peut difficilement parler en son nom propre, car sa vocation est liée à l'espace de la construction sociale, ce qui explique que son rapport à la ville soit tendu. Figure récente parmi nous, l'intellectuel joue le rôle de celui qui interroge le monde et, en même temps, doit être interrogé pour la fonction qu'il remplit. D'où la question de savoir qui sont (...) les intellectuels qui nous représentent. Dans cet article, je m'interroge sur la triade intellectuelle de 1943 - Gilberto Freire, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda et Caio Prado Júnior - en tant que candidats à la fonction d'intellectuels parmi nous. Tout d'abord, j'analyse le rôle des interprètes du Brésil, puis j'explique certains éléments relatifs à la cohérence de cette interprétation. Tout cela pour répondre à la question suivante : pourquoi cette triade est-elle présentée depuis les années 1940 comme « les interprètes » du Brésil? To approach the poem-fragments of Empedocles as a discourse emerging from the drama of living, is to allow their performatively theorized snapshots to return from mere stills to moving images of practice in modulated stages of training. This study will propose two ways of approach: aesthetically, and as a transformative spiritual exercise (askēsis). The aesthetic way employs four terms from Adorno’s Aesthetic Theory, and the way of spiritual exercise follows Hadot’s four stages of a Goethe inspired practice from his text, (...) Don’t Forget to Live. Adorno’s four terms (fragmentary, enigmatic, fixated, shudder), work as a frame for Empedocles’ poem-fragments (and those of other Presocratics), that dovetails with PWL practices, and examples of self-transformation, both personal and historical. Nested within each of Hadot’s four stages, including a conclusion on the “deaths of Empedocles,” I have placed and re-ordered a selection of Empedocles’ fragments in my translation that reframe the poem-fragments back to their continuing ways of coming back to life as memento vivere. This study, stages, and examples serve as a guide to a larger project involving a re-translating and re-sequencing (re-ordering) of all of Empedocles’ extant fragments. Such a task hopes to add to the PWL’s cartographic and hermeneutic project of the arts of living, teachers of ways of living, and as an alternative and vibrant history of philosophy. -/- . (shrink)

This article analyzes the challenges of education in the rural Andean context of Peru, highlighting the crucial role of the leadership of principals and teachers. To achieve this, an inductive qualitative documentary research approach was used, based on inquiries supported by hermeneutical analysis. Despite limitations in training in educational management and action, successful school leaders are distinguished by their concern for teachers' job satisfaction, generating high performance expectations, and promoting school achievements to the public. community. Teaching performance is essential in (...) this context, not only for imparting knowledge, but also for acting as a bridge between the educational institution and the community. Pedagogical processes, framed in directive leadership, are fundamental for teacher professional development and the improvement of learning. In addition, the importance of the active and effective participation of teachers in creating an environment of trust and collaborative learning is highlighted. (shrink)

Il a, par obligation (...) et répression, délaissé l’action d’occupation des terres pour le développement de l’agriculture biologique et la production d’aliments « sains », largement à destination des villes. The power, depth, and humanity of the work and life of Josiah Royce gains in richness by following his reflections on the problems of philosophical pedagogy. While engaged as a professor of philosophy, author, advisor, and administrator, Royce developed and refined guidelines for the philosophy of education, and the art of philosophical pedagogy. Except for a few personal recollections from his students and colleagues, an article by Frank M. Oppenheim that appeared thirty-five years ago, and the annotated bibliography to his (...) writings, Royce's works on pedagogy have not been collected, nor have they received critical attention. The scope of this study is to follow Royce's pedagogical reflections from 1883 to 1913, providing contextual support and critical receptions so that the student of the philosophy of Royce may profit from his studies on the embodiment of ideals as the philosophical engagement of the art of education. Résumé : Si Dieu n'était pas brésilien, il serait difficile de comprendre les causes d'un peuple qui accepte de vivre avec l'illusion de la démocratie raciale ; le mythe de la cordialité qui cache l'autoritarisme, le patrimonialisme et le physiologisme politique ; le refus de comprendre que le football, la politique et la religion sont des opiacés nationaux, y compris sous la forme du nouveau patronage pentecôtiste ; et l’hypothèse selon laquelle nous vivons dans un paradis terrestre dont les maux (...) proviennent uniquement de la colonisation portugaise et non d’un programme politique en cours. Pour expliquer ces causes, nous avons analysé des éléments des dimensions économiques, sociales, politiques et culturelles médiées par les concepts de terre, de corps, de pouvoir et d'éducation. Dans tous, il y a un intérêt général : comprendre les dispositifs de contrôle qui gouvernent la société brésilienne, la condamnant, sinon au suicide, du moins à la perpétuation de l'esclavage sous des formes de domination individuelle et sociale de la population. 200 ans après l'indépendance, le Brésil peut-il célébrer la libération et l'émancipation de sa population? El objetivo de este artículo es localizar, reunir y analizar las ideas de Jacques Derrida sobre el perdón. Para ello, el trabajo expone de manera breve en qué consiste la estrategia de escritura deconstructiva con el fin de hacer explícito el vínculo de la deconstrucción con el fenómeno del perdón. El perdón es considerado a partir de motivos deconstructivos y, alejado así de los parámetros tradicionales, puede insertarse en la estrategia derridiana a través de dos términos centrales de esta: decisión (...) y responsabilidad. Por lo tanto, el perdón acaece cuando se experimenta su imposibilidad, la aporía que le es propia y adviene como consecuencia la decisión y la responsabilidad. (shrink)

This paper is Part II of my study entitled “Approaching the Parmenidean Sublime: A New Translation and Resequencing of the Fragments of Parmenides.” What I seek to accomplish here is to elaborate on my resequencing/translation decisions, and take up the more thorny philosophical/juridical aspects of my position previously mentioned, yet condensed, in “Notes to Translator’s Introduction,” and “Notes on the Fragments.” I believe that this continued engagement with the fragments of Parmenides makes up the “dutiful apprenticeship” intrinsically represented in the (...) poem’s teacher-student exchange, and in the request to convey the story. The request to convey the story is still alive and well in Parmenidean studies. This passing along of a teaching, its history, and its style, makes up the essence of an apprenticeship, whether artistic, philosophical, or as a social ontology. To streamline my references to the poem, I will use only my translated and resequenced fragment and line numbers found in my article, “Approaching the Parmenidean Sublime: A New Translation and Resequencing of the Fragments of Parmenides,” from Volume 23, Number 1, pages 1–18, Fall 2018, of this journal. The Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) represents a set of life-long disorders. In particular, subjects with ASD can display momentary behaviors of acute agitation and aggressiveness called crisis behaviors. These events are problematic for the subject and care providers but little is known about their occurrence, namely, possible relations among intensity, frequency, and duration. A group of ASD subjects (n=33) has been observed for 12 months reporting data on each crisis ( n = 1137 crises). Statistical analysis did not find significant (...) results, while the relation between crisis duration and frequency showed a good fit to a “power law” curve, suggesting the application of Self-Organized Criticality (SOC) model. The SOC is used to describe natural phenomena as earthquakes, bank failures of rivers, mass extinctions, and other systems where a type of “catastrophic events” is necessary to maintain a critical equilibrium. In a sense, subjects at risk of crisis behavior seem to fit the same model as seismic zones at risk of earthquakes. The employment of the same strategies, as those successfully developed for known SOC systems, could lead to important insights for ASD management. Moreover, the SOC model offers possible interpretations of crisis behavior dynamics suggesting that they are unpredictable and, in a sense, necessary. (shrink)

The paper responds to the recent calls for further evidence on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in small and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs). Drawing on the extant literature, the authors identify four characteristics contended by academicians as peculiarities of SMEs’ approach to CSR: the intrinsic relationship between CSR and corporate strategy motivated by the need to continuously dialogue with stakeholders; the centrality of the entrepreneur's ethos in CSR decisions; the coexistence and the cross‐effect of economically instrumental and ethically motivated CSR policies; and (...) the finalization of CSR initiatives to specific firm growth objectives. These four peculiarities are explored in the case of an Italian medium‐sized company operating in the furniture industry. The outcomes show how the four peculiarities are salient in analyzing the CSR approach by the company and suggest areas for further research aimed at developing a thorough theory of CSR in SMEs. In particular, we deepen the analysis of the nature of the uniqueness of medium‐sized companies’ approach to CSR, providing possible interpretations of the reasons making medium‐sized companies’ approach to CSR different from both small and large companies. El árbol formaliza lo que la biología evolutiva detecta acerca de la conexión de los seres a lo largo del tiempo. El Árbol es un producto semiótico. No incluye ninguna explicación sobre el proceso evolutivo, sino que simplemente indica la comunidad de los seres vivientes y su probable origen común. El Árbol (...) permite otras lecturas, más allá de su sentido unívoco, hacia una visión integral del fenómeno de la vida. Aun cuando el Árbol de la vida sea una construcción científica, él opera como un símbolo, con capacidad de generar una comprensión metacientífica de la vida. (shrink)

By comparing developments in two southern Italian factories, this article contrasts “aggregative” and “deliberative” procedures in trade unions. In one of the plants, the preferences of some of the workers appear to have been changed by deliberation. The process of rational persuasion seems to have required, however, more than sheer circulation of information. Based on this evidence, the article argues that when a potential conflict of interests is involved, speakers need to provide evidence that they are animated by a “communicative” (...) rather than “strategic” intent. This implies validating their implicit claim to sincerity of communication. (shrink)

Based on field research at both the national and local levels, this article reconstructs the emergence of negotiated policy making in Italy in the 1990s. It argues that standard corporatist theory is totally incapable of accounting for the particular organizational mechanisms through which, at critical moments, that is, the moments in which policy change had to be introduced, consensus was mobilized among both middle-level union structures and rank-and-file workers in Italy. In fact, absent centralized organizational capacities, the Italian unions relied (...) heavily on democratic decision-making procedures. These procedures strengthened the unions' capacity to hold to their side of the bargaining in national negotiations through essentially two types of mechanisms, aggregative and deliberative. Como una respuesta a esta interrogante, el presente artículo examina diversas perspectivas evolucionarias universales de amplia escala temporal, apoyándose particularmente en el enfoque de la Fe Bahá’í, desde la que presenta un análisis sobre el rol de la religión, para abordar finalmente aquellos procesos que podrían orientar a una sociedad civil (...) mundial hacia una espiritualidad encarnada en los procesos sociales, desde nuestra condición actual concebida como el momento de la gran bifurcación y de la era de las comunidades. L’article présente une réflexion sur la question du temps dans les processus de migration et mise au travail des travailleurs et travailleuses détachés dans l’agriculture intensive. Nous proposons d’analyser le rapport entre les temporalités imposées aux détachés pour répondre aux besoins productifs et leurs conduites temporelles. Il s’agit de comprendre comment les personnes détachées vivent ces temporalités, mais aussi comment elles se les réapproprient et/ou les contournent afin de les articuler aux espaces-temps de la reproduction sociale. Notre recherche s’appuie sur (...) une enquête qualitative menée auprès des ouvriers et ouvrières mis à disposition des exploitants par des agences d’intérim espagnoles dans trois départements du sud de la France. L’analyse, structurée autour des parcours migratoires, du système du détachement et des temps sociaux, nous permet de saisir les effets des politiques migratoires sur les parcours des saisonniers dans les temps longs ; de retracer des stratégies de dépassement des temporalités imposées, qui amènent à l’installation et à l’emploi direct ; d’identifier les tentatives de « faire communauté » à travers des initiatives commerciales et récréatives collectives développées dans les temps libres.
